Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!!

Not that we need a reminder of the winter past, but this view of the VB Clubhouse taken on March 7th is one that most, if any, Herald readers will have never seen before. In the inset, the snow along the sides was so high it came to the top of the windows. Brrrr.

PLANNED GIVINGBruce Eyford

This week should also mark the end of school and the official start of family and friend time at Victoria Beach. I hope the weather will cooperate and that dragonflies will be out in full force to control the mosquito population – mosquitoes love me so if all else fails, come stand next to me and you will be safe!

As mentioned last week, we have had some changes to the VBCC Board with the addition of Suzy Hester as Vice President and Leslie Sarchuk as Member at Large. Leslie and Suzy join Cathy Finnbogason (Treasurer), Wendy Derksen (Secretary), Maureen Neuendorff (Past President), and me as the President. Leaving the Board are Melanie Charbonneau (Past President) and Brenda Vielhaber (Member at Large) who have given a lot of their time and energy while on the Board over the past few years. We want to thank Melanie and Brenda for their years of service and I know they will find other ways to help as they step away from Board duties.

Since it is membership weekend, please keep an eye out for our volunteer canvassers who will be going door to door this Saturday and Sunday. Remember, your memberships help support all the events and activities throughout the summer and often helps provide local kids with their first jobs as Rec Assistants, Tennis Attendants, Librarians, or Swim Instructors.

Don’t forget to come and enjoy the Canada Day fireworks on July 1st as we try and kick the summer off with a BANG!! I am sure Rob Hester has once again organized a great show that kids and adults will enjoy.

See you around the Avenues,Anil Kaul

With the July long weekend now upon us, we can officially say summer has begun. Let’s hope that the weather, waves and insect of the week are all favourable and tolerable for our Municipality and our residents.

Kevin and Sandra Ateah have been working hard over the past few months organizing the stickers, the staff and the stalls available at the VB Parking Lot. Please affix your non-transferable vehicle sticker to the inside of the driver’s side window of your vehicle or to the side bottom left corner of your front window. These stickers are easily affixed and easily removed at the end of the season, leaving no residue on your window.

The Information Office welcomes Bev Urschatz back to her post and please stop by to say hello to Kiera Garagan when she is on duty, directing individuals and providing VB information to those needing to drive into the Restricted Area.

Karl Hutchison and his crew have done an excellent job getting the VB Golf Course into great shape. The Golf Course Clubhouse has been safely levelled and new beams put into place to ensure that the building remains steady and solid for years to come. A new shed will soon be constructed to accommodate the need for more golf cart storage lockers, a new putting area has been designed and the driving cage has been moved to a different nearby location.

The Traverse Bay Nuisance Grounds on Highway 11 have new hours effective May 1,

2014 and they are now open every day of the week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. New tipping fees may apply to certain refuse so please check as you go through the gate to dispose of your items.

Many thanks to the Doctors Committee for arranging physician coverage for 6 or 7 weeks this summer. This committee worked very hard trying to secure physicians for the season. Special thanks to Candace Bishoff, Bruce Morrison, Kathy Brydon and Garret Surcon for their efforts over the past several months. Kathy and Garret volunteered to stay on the Committee moving forward.

Council is also moving forward with the Shoreline Management Plan with Baird Engineering and we hope to have plans in place in the next few months. We are also moving forward on a new Public Works Building to replace the existing building in the Public Works yard. Further information on both of these initiatives will be forthcoming as the summer progresses.

Our E-Waste and Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Event will be held on Friday, August 1 from noon until 6 p.m. and Saturday, August 2 from noon until 5 p.m. at the Public Works Yard. I am working on getting posters up outlining what can and cannot be recycled at this event.

The RM reminds you that the election for our municipal Council is coming up this summer. The Advance Poll is on Tuesday, July 15 from 8

this summer—Shauna Filuk & Jill Kirbyson. We are excited for the start of summer and to get the activities going. The last weekend in June is a big one for the Membership Coordinators – Lise Simonsen, Anita Gubbels, and Pam Beazley. Thanks for all of your hard work! Swim registration is also on this same weekend on Sunday June 29th. Thanks to Andrea O’Connor & Tamara Roehr for setting this up for all our swimmers. Our first fun event is organized once again by Rob Hester. Come see the Fireworks at 10:45pm on Tuesday July 1st. Should be a great display as usual!

We also have a few event coordinators who are stepping down after their events this summer. If you would like to contribute to the community by running one of our fabulous events, please contact the current coordinator or one of us. It would be great to shadow the current coordinators during their event so the transition goes as smoothly as possible. Thank you to the following volunteers:

evenings at the Clubhouse. Please arrive by 6:20 for a 6:30 start. Bring a partner; or, if you need a partner, call Bob or Gale at 204-756-8236.

Hello all,Hope you are as excited as I am for the much anticipated tennis

season we have ahead of us. Whether you’ve been honing your skills all winter, or have just finished dusting off your racket, I’m sure there are many of you eager to get on the courts.

Due to the popularity from last summer, I thought I would give everyone a refresher on the rules of GVS. I also would like to add that GVS is for all skill levels and encourage everyone to come out! GVS is a King/Queen’s court game where a team of challengers tries to knock off the Kings or Queens who are trying to defend their spot on the court. To do this, the challengers must either beat the Kings or Queens in three consecutive points, or hit a winner. The ball is fed into play to the challengers by one of the court attendants. The first feed will be given to the challenger at the base line where the two teams proceed to play out the point. If the challengers win that point, another ball is fed again to the challengers at the service line as a volley and again the point is played out. If the challengers win that point again, then the challengers are given a third feed at the net for a smash, where again the two teams play out the point. If the challenger succeeds in winning the point after the feed for a smash, they are now the Kings or Queens and are given 3 seconds to run to the other side of the net. At any point, if the challengers lose the point, they are considered out and must proceed to the back of the line where the next set of challengers will step into play. I know this is a detailed explanation that may be hard to visualize, but by coming out and observing what’s going on, you’ll pick it up easily. See you on the Courts!

Victoria Beach Community ChurchAfter a long, cold winter,

it is so great to be back at the beach. With activities started or starting, another VB summer is here. The summer Church services start on July 6 with Reverend Hugo Unrah as minister. July 13 will be Alex Cross, and Reverend Robert Campbell on the 20th. The last Sunday in July, the 27th,

we will have Lt. Cols. Cathy & Ray Harris. We hope you will come and join us. As usual, at our first service, we serve cake and beverages and enjoy our friends back from near and far.

Gospel Mission, Faith Bible Camp, Agape Table, Salvation Army Youth Programs, Samaritans Purse (Canada), St. Matthews Maryland Community Ministry, Mully Children’s Foundation, Teen Challenge-Central Canada, Wings of Power Breakfast Program (Pine Falls). It changes from time to time,

depending on needs. We are very proud of what

the people of Victoria Beach Community Church have contributed over the years. Please come and join on July 6th – we’d love to see you there. We are at 8th Avenue and Pine Road.

*Please note that persons in default of payment from last year will not be allowed to register this year until their accounts are cleared by cash payment.

*Again, we are asking you to “know” your expected date of departure. Too often we have found that suddenly a child will greet the instructor with “Today is my last day!” Of course the instructor, not having known this, has not prepared a progress report, and is unable to complete one while teaching that day’s lesson. We hope to eliminate this problem by asking for this date in advance. The date is not intended to be binding. You are free to change your mind, though we will still require two or three days’ notice if you decide to leave earlier than your stated date.

*If you cannot attend Registration Day, our Head Swim Instructor, Kristin Vielhaber, will be available for swimming registrations and the purchase of VB Club memberships daily at the Swim dock from 9:30-11:00 am (at the Clubhouse if it is raining). The above fees apply. The base rate for Red Cross Swim Kids is $25.00 for three weeks or any part thereof. Please ensure that you have your copy of the VB Club membership form, medical insurance numbers and either cash or cheque payment.

Faith Bible Camp 60 years of tradition with Victoria Beach

Calling it a momentous year would not be an over-statement. The year was 1954, only 60 years ago.

It was the year the first gravel road was being pushed through to Victoria Beach that would spell the end of the train that had brought people to the beach since 1916. It was also the year when residents at Victoria Beach would be flipping a switch to turn on a light bulb for the first time instead of striking a match to fire up a coal oil lantern.

It was also the inaugural year of Faith Bible Camp. Then FBC was located on the east shore of Elk Island near the south end where the sand cliffs begin. Today its home address is 33 Olafson Blvd. in Sandy Bay.

The original FBC campsite had a wondrous view of the hot summer sun rising over Devil’s Island and was full of birch groves in the front with a pine forest in behind. There was a beautiful white sand beach, a large green space for sports and games that was encircled eventually by camper cabins, a dining hall and kitchen, and of course a chapel. The first stove was wood-burning, the refrigerator for years was an icehouse dug into the ground and filled each winter with blocks of ice cut from the lake and insulated by straw. “Outdoor plumbing” was the order of the day. For years the campers were boated across the lake from the end of 504 on the Pelican, a WWII landing craft-like boat that would run up onto the beach and then drop its bow.

From the first year until 1970 when all the buildings were skidded over the ice to the new location, thousands of boys and girls enjoyed a week or two at FBC. Since the early 70s and through to today 500-600 campers, annually served by another 150 volunteer staff, enjoy the sun, sand and warm water of Victoria Beach. Along with swimming and boating sports, an all-volunteer staff motivated to serve and make a difference, lead crafts, sports, games and chapel times.

The Winnipeg Free Press interviewed one of those volunteers, Murray Taylor, President and CEO of Investors Group, who moved from being a camper, to cabin counselor, to camp director and finally to the FBC General Director for 6 years. He was asked, “What or who would you say had the greatest influence on your leadership style?” He replied it was at FBC that he learned “you must show people due respect and you need to capture their passion to be able to motivate them.” The “who” was a man

Faith Bible Camp ConTinUed

Victoria Beach HERALD June 27, 2014 15

named Geri Thomas. Murray characterized him as a man with “incredible passion… whose leadership style had a profound influence on me.”

Geri Thomas, who as a boy in the 1920s delivered milk to VB cottagers, was the vision and passion behind FBC. He returned from WWII severely injured and minus one leg. The things taught to him as a youngster from the Bible, and especially about the Lord Jesus Christ, he personally decided to make his own in 1951. He, along with his wife Dolly, wanted all people but especially children to hear the good news that he had just come to trust as true. His vision was put into action by people from eight Manitoba churches. It remains owned and operated by these same kinds of churches including the Wayside Gospel Chapel, Grand Marais.

Of interest might be the fact that Peter Paulson, who was born

and raised at VB and who served on council, was not only the building supervisor and treasurer for many years but is credited with giving camp the name that describes what is at the heart of FBC. The message at camp remains one focused on faith in Jesus Christ according to what the Bible teaches. There are literally thousands who credit their experience at Faith Bible Camp as changing their lives.

The FBC program is intentionally biblical, relational, affordable and FUN for campers of all ages from 8 to 80+: camps for children, teens & young adults, along with families & those 50+.

We would love for all VB and area residents to join us for an Open House, Saturday, June 28th from 1-4 pm that celebrates our 60 year history at Victoria Beach. There will be a short presentation to the RMVB and Einfelds Bakery at 4 pm.

Aaron and Jessie, The Veggie Wagon, were the first vendors to take a chance on us this morning, June 21, 2014. They are from her parents’ Market Garden in St. Georges, and are coming to sell produce fresh from the fields Saturday mornings through July and August.

Feeling badly not to have much product to sell this early in the season, they brought along their guitar to entertain, and some skirts imported from India to make their space more enticing.

We will be working hard to have more spaces rented starting next Saturday. Rental fees go to the Victoria Beach Sports facility on Highway 59 just before the gates of Victoria Beach. Readily accessible by bike, wagon, or automobile, this is one more opportunity to get new and fresh items close to your front doorstep.

Why this is the best year for you to take up tennis

Tennis this week

If you’ve ever thought about playing tennis or seriously want to improve your game, this is the year to do it. We have it all here at VB.

One of the biggest hurdles to playing tennis is that you need someone to play. You have to arrange games, rearrange your schedule, phone people, and then worry whether you’re good enough to play/ask this person. You might be asking yourself, “Why do I need all this aggravation and on my holidays yet?” At VB tennis we have the solution. This year you can play tennis six times a week without ever having to arrange a game or make a phone call. Just show up … Mondays and Fridays for adult round robins, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and now Saturdays, for GVS, or come out on Fridays for something new, adult tennis drills. How easy is that? No need to plan, just show up. This is how you will meet new players with the same passion, or hesitancy, for tennis as you. This is where friendships will be formed and alliances made. A new acquaintance, a new hitting partner, a new doubles group. No pressure, no expectations, no commitment, only fun.

For those who have been bitten by the tennis bug, one of the endless goals is to get better, much better. To hit the ball harder, to have more control, to be more consistent, to be better than your spouse so they will stop giving advice, or to beat that know-it-all in the next tournament.

Again, we have the solution. We are so fortunate to have a variety of excellent instructors to take your game to the next level. The always upbeat Robert Kennedy will be offering lessons on Mondays. Robert has lessons for children and adults of all levels and abilities, with small class sizes for personalized instruction.

Once again we will be offering “Hit with a Pro” on Wednesdays. Each week will feature a different instructor. Geoff Kirbyson and Bill Serbin will both be offering doubles clinics. And returning from their European tour, are George and Kevin Kylar. The Kylars were planning to offer two consecutive Wednesdays of lessons to provide some consistency of instruction but I was just informed that their flight will not be back in time for their July 30 date. However they will be here on August 6.

New this year, beginning on July 11, is “Adult Tennis Drills”, on Fridays at 1:00. This free one hour adult hitting clinic will enable you to practice and hone your basic tennis strokes. Forehands, backhands, volleys, and smashes will be fed by the court attendants. With only eight people per court play should move

quickly. To make perfect practice, perfect, I have invited two local pros each week to help guide players in their stroke mechanics. I have asked Geoff Kirbyson, Stephen Dubienski, Mike Lowdeyks, Alex Lesiuk, Bill Serbin and Robert Kennedy to each take two Fridays.

As an added bonus of sorts, if you bring your video capable smart phone or tablet, we will have a court attendant film your strokes during the drills. This will enable you to see what minor adjustments might be needed for you to hit just like Roger or Maria. And you can view it all in the privacy of your own cottage. If you don’t believe it when the instructor says you are continually making two overhead loops with your racquet before you hit your forehand you can actually see it for yourself. Imagine that! But this comes with a warning; after I saw my strokes on film for the first time, I was depressed for a week. And to make matters worse, why is my tongue always hanging out the side of my mouth?

I can see tennis drills being very popular for all levels of ability. When it comes to technique we all need pointers or a different point of view, because part of the fun of tennis is trying to get better. Since this will be a free clinic, we will restrict instruction to a limit of 16 participants on two courts. I think this could really be fun for everyone.

So, for these reasons, if you‘re thinking of taking up tennis or want to seriously improve your game, this is the year to do it. Because at VB, we have it all. But there is still one more reason for you to start playing tennis at VB. By starting now you will have one year more. We all have only so many years to play this wonderful sport and by starting now you will have one more season to enjoy.

See you at the courts.Bryan and Lisa

Victoria Beach Club 2014 membership driveWe would like to welcome everyone to Victoria Beach for

another great summer! The Victoria Beach Club has been busy over the winter months organizing another season of fun activities for the whole family. This year, we are pleased to offer seven weeks of programming rather than the regular six! You’ll be able to see the full line-up in the much-anticipated Calendar of Regular and Special Events (printed in a sunny YELLOW this year). It will be available during the V.B. Club Membership Drive taking place on the weekend preceding Canada Day.

The Victoria Beach Club, an organization of volunteers, sponsors many of the recreational programs and events held during the summer:

The Recreational Programs offered include swimming, tennis and golf lessons, yoga, aerobics, mixed-bridge, movies, arts and crafts for children, supervised hikes and bicycle rides, teen-nights and family recreation night—just to name a few.

Some of the Special Events include: sports day, beach events, the sandcastle building contest, the cross-country run, the masquerade, the dog show, open swims, and tournaments for tennis, soccer, and volleyball.

The Club is responsible for the publication of the Herald, the maintenance of the swimming dock, the clubhouse and the tennis courts, as well as the salaries of the recreation director, the recreation and tennis court assistants, the librarians and certified swim instructors.

A major source of revenue to provide all these programs and services is through the sale of memberships and club donations. We need your support to continue the traditions that have made Victoria Beach so special.

Please support the V.B. Club by buying one or more memberships for your family and any visitors you may expect. To help the Club out even more, in addition to buying your membership, you can make a tax-deductible donation to the Club (canvassers will provide a tax-receipt for donations of $20 and over). Should you not need a membership, perhaps you could still consider making a donation to the Club, to help maintain the cherished traditions of V.B.

This year memberships will be $50 per family (a great bargain!). A single Family is defined as a mother and/or father and their

dependent children.  Memberships are non-transferable to other relatives, friends or renters – they can purchase a membership at the V.B. Info Booth (at the Gate), at the library or at the tennis courts. The membership is good for the whole season. There are no drop-in options available.

Several memberships can be sold at the same cottage – one for each family at the cottage. Memberships are sold to cottage owners and renters as well as cottagers in other beach communities. A membership entitles you to voting privileges (1 vote for each $50 membership).

Payment by cheque is preferred. Cheques should be made payable to The Victoria Beach Club.

Please remember that you must wear your wristband to all V.B. Club activities in order to participate in any Club event. Each family member will receive a wristband upon the purchase of a membership. NOTE to Parents—please consider writing your child’s name on the wristband in case it is left behind at an event. Replacements for lost wristbands are available for $5.00.

If you miss the Membership Drive you can buy your membership at the swimming lesson registration on Sunday, June 29th at the Clubhouse (we will start selling memberships at 9:30 am, which is a half hour before swim registration starts), or throughout the summer at the Library (during regular hours), Tennis Courts and the V.B. Info Booth.

The Membership Drive for the Victoria Beach Club is planned for Saturday, June 28th to Monday, June 30th. Volunteer canvassers will be going door to door to assist you in the purchase of memberships for your family. Canvassers can also take payment for your tennis shoe tags ($15.00 per person). To obtain your shoe tag, you will need to take your membership application receipt to the tennis court.

Volunteers are always needed for Membership Drive! If you would like to be added to our list of canvassers, please let Pam know at 204-756-3682 (V.B.) or 204-488-2309 (Winnipeg). Canvassing is a great way to get re-acquainted with your beach neighbours after a long winter and it provides such a valuable service to the Club.

Other concerned cottage owners came forward and not wanting to give up in our quest for fairness another committee was formed in 2011. The committee consisted of Liz Foster, Donna Thain, Cathie and Tom Thorsteinson, Cliff and Linda Fox and Brian Hodgson.

On the advice of several lawyers the committee decided legal action was not feasible. The only other option then is to continue to lobby the government.

The committee had meetings with MACO (Manitoba Association of Cottage Owners) who already had a committee working on this issue. They were working with a group called “Let’s Play Fair”. This group has been vocal, putting up signs and lobbying government to have school tax removed from all property and paid for from general revenues /income tax.

Our VB committee supports the policy of “Let’s Play Fair” but we were focusing on supporting cottage owners who pay the education tax twice, once on their permanent residents and again on their cottage. This culminated in a letter followed by a meeting with Stan Struthers, the finance minister of the current government. We pleaded our case citing all the reasons the school tax on cottages is not fair. We asked for some relief and presented the following recommendation as possible solutions.

1. Phase in a reduction or removal of education taxes from all seasonal residences.

2. Reduce the current portionment from 45% to 15% (on school tax) to reflect the actual usage of cottage properties by seasonal residents. Most seasonal residents spend six weeks to three months at their cottages.

3. Assess all seasonal properties at a fixed flat education tax rate set by the province at $500.00 per year.

4. Allow seasonal residences to receive the $700.00 rebate to help offset the huge burden of education taxes.

5. Allow seasonal property owners an education tax credit against personal provincial income tax.

“What about that darn school tax?”Week 2 - A new committee continues

6. Allow seasonal property owners to claim education tax against capital gains.

Did anything change. NOOur committee also met with Myrna Dreidger, the finance

critic, who advised we need to keep lobbing government.Only government can change the tax structure. Let politicians

know your concerns. MAKE THE VOICE BIGGER.

Once again, a great opportunity to help the Victoria Beach Community Club and to pass on your treasures that are in good condition and that need a new home.

Last year, our Victoria Beach Community raised a record breaking $3320 for our clubhouse and all its diverse programs. As your flea market conveners this year, we hope that everyone, both new and experienced will again support this important VB Community Club event. We believe that thanks to the ongoing support and encouragement of our wonderful VB community, our 2014 VB Flea market will again be a resounding success.

PLEASE “Come on Down” to help with pricing, sorting, pick ups, set up, etc. between

8 am and10:30 am… the earlier, the better. If you have a pick up truck, please bring a partner or a crew if possible and pick up an assigned route sheet so that we do not miss anyone. Unfortunately last summer, six of our trucks were short crews and our teenage boys, except for the Velestuk boys, must have been sleeping in. (We know … teenagers need their sleep!) Hopefully a few more teens will join us this year, as it was a little frightening being Home Alone at VB Clubhouse in the early morning hours. Remember to bring work gloves if you are joining a truck crew. We’ll supply the latex gloves for sorting. If you have past flea market experience, please identify yourself and your area of expertise –pick up trucks, antiques, toys, artwork, linens, electrical, sporting goods, furniture, pricing, etc. “

Please put your articles out by 8 am Saturday morning, July 5th. Regretfully articles put out on Friday evening may disappear. Please note that the Flea Market will only accept small electrical appliances that are in good working order and CSA approved. Please box your books and label separately for the book sale on Sunday.

The following items will NOT BE PICKED UP: mattresses, sofas, love seats, large appliances, TVs, microwaves, electric fry pans, car seats, bed frames, cribs, toilets, carpets, building supplies, fridges, stoves, washers, dryers, gas BBQs and please … no dirty or broken items and sorry, no clothing! If you have a

questionable treasure, please call us for advice before Saturday. Finally, we need volunteers to help Lorraine Cook and the

Formidable Clean Up Crew as well. Just arrive between 3:00 pm and 4:30 pm on Saturday, July 5th. Any ideas regarding contacts for any charitable organizations interested in picking up our remaining treasures would be greatly appreciated. In the past, we have had no other choice but to send many fine items to the landfill. Volunteers may arrive to help anytime after 7:45 am on Saturday morning and are free to stay as long or as little as you would like.

ALSO: Wear your VBC wristbands and be eligible for special surprises !!!

We look forward to meeting everyone soon. Have a wonderful

summer!See you at The Beach!
