Trinity Sunday
2
TODAY’S WORSHIP FOCUS
We believe in the Triune God. The mystery of God’s nature is
not revealed for us to comprehend, but to believe so that we
see the gracious nature of God. Today, on Trinity Sunday, we
proclaim the incomprehensible. What we don’t understand, we
accept by faith!

WISCONSIN EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN SYNOD
I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
Psalm 122:1

The Invocation
recalls the words
of Holy Baptism
where the Triune
God put his
name on us.
The Greeting
expresses the
Christian love
that exists in a
congregation,
and is from 2
Corinthians
13:14.
OPENING HYMN
326 | May the Grace of Christ Our Savior
PLEASE STAND
INVOCATION AND GREETING
Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit.
Congregation: Amen.
M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the
fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.
C: And also with you.

CONFESSION OF SINS
M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love
and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him
and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us
confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.
C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth.
In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not
deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my
Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing
love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.
M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the
perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has
removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God
give you strength to live according to his will.
C: Amen.
SONG OF PRAISE
Oh, Taste and See
Confession and
Absolution are a
significant and
powerful part of
a worship
service. By faith,
you can hear
God’s voice
speaking words
of forgiveness!
This canticle is
based on Psalm
34:8 and Psalm
119:89. This is a
joyful song —
we have just
heard that our
sins are forgiven;
we are about to
hear the Word
of God. What
better reason to
praise the Lord!

PRAYER OF THE DAY
M: Let us pray.
Almighty God and Father, dwelling in majesty and mystery, filling
and renewing all creation by your eternal Spirit, and manifesting
your saving grace through our Lord Jesus Christ: in mercy cleanse
our hearts and lips that, free from doubt and fear, we may ever
worship you, one true immortal God, with your Son and the Holy
Spirit, living and reigning, now and forever.

FIRST LESSON Genesis 1:1–2:3
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now
the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of
the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw
that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.
God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And
there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
And God said, “Let there be an expanse
between the waters to separate water from
water.” So God made the expanse and
separated the water under the expanse from
the water above it. And it was so. God called
the expanse “sky.” And there was evening,
and there was morning—the second day.
And God said, “Let the water under the
sky be gathered to one place, and let dry
ground appear.” And it was so. God called
the dry ground “land,” and the gathered
waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it
was good.
Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing
plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according
to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation:
plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit
with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.
And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to
separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark
seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of
the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great

lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to
govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the
expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and
the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it
was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth
day.
And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let
birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.” So God
created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving
thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every
winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God
blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the
water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” And there
was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.
And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to
their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild
animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. God made the wild
animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds,
and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their
kinds. And God saw that it was good.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness,
and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over
the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move
along the ground.”
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in
number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and
the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the
ground.”
Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face
of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They
8
will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the
birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—
everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for
food.” And it was so.
God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there
was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast
array.
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been
doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God
blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested
from all the work of creating that he had done.
PSALM OF THE DAY
Psalm 150
Praise God in his sanctuary;*
praise him in his mighty heavens.
Praise him for his acts of power;*
praise him for his surpassing greatness.

9
Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,*
praise him with the harp and lyre,
praise him with tambourine and dancing,*
praise him with strings and flute,
praise him with the clash of cymbals,*
praise him with resounding cymbals.
Refrain
Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.*
Praise the LORD.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son*
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,*
is now, and will be forever. Amen.

SECOND LESSON 2 Corinthians 13:11–14
Finally, brothers, good-by. Aim for perfection, listen to my
appeal, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace
will be with you.
Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints send their
greetings.
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and
the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
The grace, the
love, the
fellowship. That
is the story of
the Trinity in the
lives of believers.
Grace is that
which we don’t
deserve; God’s
love is what
drove it; our
fellowship with
God and with
each other is its
result.

This creed is
named after St.
Athanasius, a
staunch defender
of the Christian
faith in the 4th
century. It
refutes two
errors. One error
denied that
God’s Son and
the Holy Spirit
are of one being
with the Father.
The other error
denied that Jesus
Christ is true
God and true
man in one
person.
The section of
the Athanasian
Creed included
here is the
portion that
confesses the
Bible’s teaching
about the Triune
God. A
translation of the
entire text of the
Athanasian
Creed may be
found on pages
132-133 our
hymnal.
Athanasian Creed
M: Whoever wishes to be saved must, above all else, hold to the true
Christian faith. Whoever does not keep this faith pure in all points
will certainly perish forever. Now this is the true Christian faith:
C: We worship one God in three persons and three persons in
one God, without mixing the persons or dividing the divine
being.
M: For each person—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—is
distinct,
C: but the deity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, equal
in glory and coeternal in majesty.
M: What the Father is, so is the Son, and so is the Holy Spirit.
C: The Father is uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit
uncreated; the Father is infinite, the Son infinite, the Holy
Spirit infinite; the Father is eternal, the Son eternal, the Holy
Spirit eternal;
M: yet they are not three who are eternal, but there is one who is
eternal, just as they are not three who are uncreated, nor three
who are infinite,
C: but there is one who is uncreated and one who is infinite.
M: In the same way the Father is almighty, the Son is almighty, the
Holy Spirit is almighty; yet they are not three who are almighty,
but there is one who is almighty.
C: So the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God;
yet they are not three Gods, but one God.
11
M: So the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, the Holy Spirit is Lord; yet
they are not three Lords, but one Lord. For just as Christian truth
compels us to confess each person individually to be God and
Lord,
C: so the true Christian faith forbids us to speak of three Gods or
three Lords.
M: The Father is neither made nor created nor begotten of anyone.
The Son is neither made nor created, but is begotten of the Father
alone. The Holy Spirit is neither made nor created nor begotten,
but proceeds from the Father and the Son.
C: So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three
Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits.
M: And within this Trinity none comes before or after; none is greater
or inferior, but all three persons are coequal and coeternal, so
that, in every way, as stated before, all three persons are to be
worshiped as one God and one God worshiped as three persons.
C: Whoever wishes to be saved must have this conviction of the
Trinity.

SERMON Matthew 28:16-20
A Most Profound Mystery and a Most Profound Love
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where
Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him;
but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority
in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and
of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey
everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always,
to the very end of the age.”

Hymn
I Believe In God the Father
C: s I believe in God the Father,
Maker of the heav’n and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, our Savior,
God's own Son of human birth.
Virgin-born, the Lord incarnate,
Whom the Spirit did conceive;
Suffered under Pontius Pilate;
He’s the God whom I believe!
Crucified, was dead and buried;
Down to hell in victory;
From the dead he rose the third day;
Up to heav'n triumphantly.
There at God's right hand he's ruling,
By his will the world is led.
He will come to judge the nations,
Both the living and the dead.
I believe in God the Spirit,
In his Church, his chosen band.
They are joined in sweet communion,
Holy in his sight they stand.
I believe in sins forgiven;
I believe I'll rise again;
I believe in life eternal.
Amen! Amen! Amen!

musical setting of
the Apostles’
Creed.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
M: Triune God, you are one eternal God, whose name we praise
forever. We could not have known you, our only Savior, if you
had not revealed yourself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—
three persons, yet one God. Remove from us all unbelief and
grant us humble faith as we contemplate this high and holy
mystery. Scatter all those who are wise in their own thoughts,
and give us a simple, childlike trust to worship you, Trinity in
Unity and Unity in Trinity. Lord, in your mercy,
C: Hear our prayer.
M: Heavenly Father, Author of creation, we give you thanks for
permitting us to live in your beautiful world. For lofty skies, the
warmth and energy of the sun, summer and winter, and day and
night,
C: We give you thanks!
M: For the evidence of your power which is revealed in towering
mountain peaks, ocean tides, the lightning of a storm, mighty
rushing winds, and all the subtle mysteries of your creation,
C: We give you thanks!
M: For your perfect love which provides for all our needs, and
protects us from all danger,
C: We give you thanks!
M: O Jesus Christ, you are the Author and Finisher of our salvation.
For redeeming us from the power of Satan, for freeing us from
slavery to sin, and for opening wide the gates of everlasting life,
C: We give you thanks!
16
M: For showing us your will for our lives, for suffering and dying for
us, for rising from the dead in victory, and for giving our lives a
purpose by making us into your servants and witnesses,
C: We give you thanks!
M: O Holy Spirit, Source of faith, for calling us by the Gospel,
enlightening us with your gifts, for establishing the Christian
Church on earth, and for keeping us in the true faith,
C: We give you thanks!
Special prayers may be spoken here.
M: O Holy Trinity, you are the God of glory, the God of grace, and
the God of every blessing and comfort. From you and through
you and to you are all things. We rejoice to call you Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit and so praise your holy name forever.
C: Amen.
LORD’S PRAYER
C: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.
