Scott Newell Wins PBA Regional Players

Championship-East TitleBy Bill Vint - PBA Media Relations

Elmwood Park, NJ Ed Bakelaarled all pin attackers with scores of

    268-269-266 for a strong 803

    series in the Wednesday, Teterboro

    Bowling League, at Parkway

    Lanes.

    Mark Marton tossed 289-778,

Steve Semancik 266-766, LarryDeAngelo 267-751, Joe Mercurio

    275-750, Frank Beamon 243-708,

    David Friedhoff 238-701, Mike

    Semancik Jr 248-688, Rich

    DeLorenzo Jr 246-686, and Kenny

    Demchak 239-682.

    ALLEN PARK, Mich. Scott

    Newell of Deland, Fla., defeat-

    ed Michael Clark Jr. of

    Cleveland, Ohio, 227-180, to

    win the Professional Bowlers

    Association Regional Players

    Championship-East at

    Thunderbowl Lanes.

    The win earned Newell

$6,000, an elite berth in the

    2012 PBA Tournament of

    Champions and his third career

title as a PBA regional competi-

    tor.

    Newell entered the 32-player

    single-elimination match play

finals as the number 27 qualifi-

er. He slipped past Nathan Bohr

of Wichita, Kan., 4-3, in the

    best-of-seven-game opening

round; swept Jim Tomek Jr. of

Camp Hill, Pa., 3-0, in the best-

of-five Round of 16, and then

    defeated Chicagos Jason

    Wojnar, 2-0, in the best-of-three

Round of 8 to reach the semifi-

    nal round where he eliminated

Jeff Hicks of Allen Park, Mich., 189-159, in a one-game

    match.

Newell, 28, hopes his Regional Players Championship

is a turning point in an up-and-down career. In 2010, he

had a streak of eight consecutive PBA South Region

    tournaments where he fin-

ished in the top 10, but over

    the next 16 regional and

    national tournaments, he

didnt finish in the top 10

    once.

    Ive made a lot of

    changes to my game, he

    said. Ive really worked

    hard at it, mostly through

    competition because I need

to see the result in competi-

tion to know if what Im

    doing is actually working.

    Ive been bowling real well

    in non-PBA events recent-

ly, so I felt good coming

    into this event.

I kind of knew that one

    of these days there was

    going to be a breakthrough,

    and hopefully things will

    go well from here.

    Newell has aspirations of

    succeeding on the PBA

    National Tour, but he also

    knows what hes up against.

Bowling on the national tour is so much different,

he said. Those guys are so good, and what they do

to the lane conditions is amazing. But you either fig-

ure it out or you go home, and Im not ready to go

    home yet.

RENO, Nev. - Derek Gagne of Menominee, Mich.,

lost most of one leg, half a foot, hearing in one ear

and sight in one eye while serving in Iraq, but two

things he hasn't lost are hope and determination.

Despite suffering such life-changing injuries three

years ago, the 24-year-old veteran has a positive out-

look on life and even has developed a new passion for

bowling, which recently led him to the 2011 United

    States Bowling Congress Open Championships.

    Gagne never was involved in

    organized bowling as a youth,

but after returning from Iraq, hestarted bowling in a league with

    his stepfather and half-brothers at

    Pla-Mor Lanes in Chilton, Wis.

    "They thought it would be

good therapy for me, and it's

    fun," Gagne said. "This year,

they needed a bowler on their

    team for the Open

    Championships, and I told them

I'd love to go. They've already

asked me if I want to go again

next year, and I immediately said

    yes."

Gagne has gone back to doing

some of the other things he loves

to do, too. He plays in a men's

basketball league during thesummer and races stock cars. He

also is enrolled at the University

of Wisconsin-Marinette, where he is studying for a

    degree in business.

Originally, Gagne planned for a career in the FBI.

"I joined the Army because I liked helping people,"

Gagne said. "I wanted to be a field agent for the FBI,

and being an MP is one of the best ways to get into

    that area."

In the fall of 2006, Gagne was deployed to Baghdad

with the National Guard 759th Military Police

    Battalion.

A couple of months later, he earned the first of two

Purple Hearts when he was hit by a mortar, causing

him to lose the hearing in one ear. Two months after

    that, things unfortunately got worse.

"We were coming back from dropping off some

Humvees to get new armor," Gagne said. "It was late

at night, and someone set off an IED (Improvised

Explosive Device), which most people know as a

    roadside bomb."

In a just a few short moments, Gagne's entire life

was changed, but he did what he knew best and tried

helping the people who were with him.

"It felt like something hit me in the chest," said

    Gagne, who also earned the

Bronze Star for bravery. "I could-

n't breathe or see anything. I did-n't know I had been injured

because all I could think about

was trying to take the next

breath. My driver and my inter-

    preter were both killed.

Somehow, I was able to pull my

    team leader from the Humvee,

but she also lost her leg."

While in the hospital in Iraq,

Gagne's leg and part of his other

    foot were removed, and they

    began reconstructing what was

left of his nose. Soon after, they

transported him to a military hos-

pital in Germany, where he was

    supposed to have additional sur-

    geries.Instead, upon his arrival in

Germany, a spot opened up on a

plane to the United States, and he was sent to

Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was

told he'd be there for 22 months and wouldn't walk

for six months to a year. Within two months, he was

fitted for a prosthetic leg, and he was walking with

a cane two weeks later. His stay lasted only nine

    months.

"I was running within six months," Gagne said.

"I truly believe that Walter Reed is the best hospital

in the world. The care I received was amazing."

On the lanes at the USBC Open Championships,

Gagne posted scores of 563 in singles, 447 in doubles

and 433 in team for a 1,443 all-events total at the

    National Bowling Stadium.

    This week, new leaders emerged

in all three divisions at the United

    States Bowling Congress Women's

    Championships.

    In the Sapphire Division,

    Dianne's Dreamers of Wilmington,

Ill., took the lead in the team event

and likes its chances of hoisting a

    blue-stoned trophy when the tour-

nament concludes its 88-day run in

    July.

The group put together games of

    859, 812 and 818 for a 2,489scratch total at the Oncenter

    Convention Center in Syracuse,

N.Y., and an additional 23 pins of

handicap per game helped them to

    a 2,558 overall total, surpassing

    Bernie's Alterations of Pleasant

    Lake, Ind., which previously held

    the lead with 2,455.

Lindsey Dieter led the way for

    Dianne's Dreamers with a 623

series and was followed by Diane

    Gleason (604), Debbie Scovel

    (544), Dianne Waldon (540) and

    Keelie Burgett (523).

    The Sapphire Doubles lead

changed hands May 21 as right-

handed sisters Doris Marcinkusand Shelia Pfeifer of Waukegan,

Ill., grabbed the top spot with a

    1,092 total. Amy Ellingson and

    Alyssa Kottwitz of Bozeman,

    Mont., previously held the lead

    with 1,074.

    Marcinkus and Pfeifer, who

came into the tournament as sub-

stitutes, both saved their best for

doubles. Pfeifer led the way with a

    581 series, while Marcinkus added

    505 for a 1,086 scratch pinfall. An

additional two pins of handicap per

game gave the pair their final total.

"This is the first time we've ever

    bowled doubles together," Pfeifer

    said. "We go to tournaments

    together, but we've never paired

up. None of us realized how good

    we were doing."

    Marcinkus, 55, and Pfeifer, 52,

    combined for a 298 average.

    Sapphire Doubles includes

    bowlers with combined averages

of 299 and below, with handicap

    being 100 percent of 300.

    Andrea Brown of Greensboro,

N.C., took the lead in Ruby All-

    Events with a 1,818 total May 21.

Brown, who bowls at Triad Lanes,

    replaced previous leader Tina

Arend of Pueblo West, Colo., who

    had 1,810.

    Brown, 48, posted consistent

scores of 544 in doubles, 511 inteam and 511 in singles for a 1,566

    scratch all-events total. An addi-

tional 28 pins of handicap per

    game helped the right-hander

    assume the lead.

The Ruby Division is for bowlers

    with averages from 150-179, and

handicap is 100 percent of 180.

In the Diamond Division a few

    days earlier, Elizabeth Hubler-

    Rike of Grand Rapids, Mich.,

    vaulted into the all-events lead

with a 2,270 total. Dede Davidson

    of Buellton, Calif., previously held

    the lead with 2,199.

    Hubler-Rike bowled well over

her 181 average and had 660 in

    doubles, 634 in singles and 625 inteam for a 1,919 scratch all-events

total. An additional 39 pins of

handicap per game helped her into

    the lead.

    Seven of Hubler Rike's nine

games were 204 or better, with a

high of 242 in singles. She also

teamed with Sharyl Jahn to move

    into fourth place in Diamond

Doubles with a 1,461 total. Trish

    Manna and Suzy Minino of

    Omaha, Neb., lead with 1,532.

    The Diamond Division is for

bowlers with averages of 180 and

    above, with handicap being 100

    percent of 220.

    2011 USBC Women'sChampionships reaches halfway

    point The 2011 USBC Women's

    Championships reached the

halfway point of its 88-day run this

week, but there is no hint of a

    slowdown as the excitement con-

tinues and new leaders continue to

    emerge.

    In addition to enlivening the

    Oncenter Convention Center each

day, the bowlers bring their own

    unique blend of sightseeing and

spending, estimated to have a $40

million impact on the local com-

munity as they shop, eat and trav-

el. The tournament began April 7

and will stretch until July 3.

So far this year, more than 1 mil-

lion frames have been bowled on

    the 48 Brunswick Anvilane lanes,

    operated with the Brunswick GS-

X pinsetters, by the 14,000 women

who have traveled to Syracuse to

    compete. That equates to 2,800

    five-player teams pouring in from

across the country. There are 5,822

    teams registered to compete in

    2011.

In the 126,000 games bowled so

    far, there were 2,494,000 balls

    thrown and 17,640,000 Brunswick

    Max pins knocked down (score).

This year, 2,120 pins will make

their way into play. The ongoing

action from 7 a.m. until 1 a.m.each day has resulted in the need

for 41.25 gallons of Kegel lane oil

    and 435 gallons of lane-cleaning

    solution.
