Neville Walker – Editor & Publisher

Some of Jeff Venuga’s wonderful images of Ben Longwell, who is featured in this issue’s True Horsemanship story, capture the essence of life as a working cowboy in Western Colorado where Ben grew up. Not being a horse person myself I found this a fascinating read, giving me a much greater appreciation of horsemanship. I was also very surprised to hear how ‘horse whispering’ has developed into a very effective corporate leadership tool.

On the equine theme, thanks for your feedback regarding our Horsin’ Around column in last month’s issue. Sandy Reid is back this month with some more useful tips. Keep the feedback coming (via email or our website, and snail mail is good too.)

It’s planting time, and this month Grant McKechnie shares some fantastic ideas about how to sort your bank (or banks) and how to avoid mistakes when it comes to planting out.

If you have young children, now is also the time of year to think about Ag Day. Clearly it takes a real commitment by children and a lot of family support to enter a lamb, calf or goat into the competitions. Helen Martin talks to Duncan McNab about where and when you start and finds that now is the time to talk to farmers if you don’t have your own stock to choose from. I’m going to have a crack at testing our 5 year old daughter’s interest in having a go this year… so we’ll see.

Lastly, we have a great yarn about our rural fire service from times of old that reminds me how wonderful it is that technology has advanced so much! Ahem…the story reminds me we need to clean the chimney and double check the smoke alarms.

This month we’re off on our annual pilgrimage to Mystery Creek for the National Fieldays and will keep you updated, via our website www.rurallifestyle.co.nz, with the new innovations featured this year.

Remember, do keep mentioning to advertisers where you saw their advert and do keep telling friends about the free subscription to Rural Lifestyle Magazine on our website.

Natural horsemanship comes to Snells

BeachBy Helen Martin

Visiting Ben at the training facility I find him already at work, breaking in a lovely – and, to the untrained eye, hugely imposing - Appaloosa cross. Taking a break to talk about the enterprise, Ben generously shares his expertise and experience with me.

Ben’s family roots go back to the original settlers of Western Colorado, where he grew up working with horses and cattle, so he’s well equipped to take on the range of services

he offers – from breaking in horses, to training them for competition or pleasure, to running training clinics that teach people better horsemanship.

Having grown up in the culture, it’s easy to see why Ben says of his vocation, “It’s more than a job, it’s a way of life, a mentality.”

The ‘mentality’ Ben talks about centres on the notion of Natural Horsemanship, a term coined in the 1980s

Although Ben and Natalie Longwell set up True West Horsemanship at Snells Beach just four months ago, they have already excited a lot of interest in Rodney.

to describe the practice of working with a horse from their point of view. Ben has his own version of Natural Horsemanship. It involves empathy, he explains, and it’s all about how you ‘ask’.

Putting aside the old way of forcefully breaking in a horse by jumping on its back from a fence rail, the Natural Horsemanship method has the trainer starting on the ground, carefully building a relationship of trust. “Safety

is the most important thing, the horse has to trust your leadership,” says Ben. “The horse stays safe through its feet, so you key into their mind through their feet, using the tactic of pressure and release.”

Horse whispering is a science, I learn, where the trainer works to “make the right thing easy” by developing “a highly specialised, cooperative relationship, based on trust, with me in charge,” Ben explains. “Every horse is different,

Taking a river crossing at speed requires sure footing and rock-solid confidence between horse and rider.

but there’s nothing you couldn’t do with a horse once they trust you.”

Ben’s a cowboy in the literal sense, and one of the things he most enjoys about his vocation is the ability stay connected to his pioneer roots, dealing with big challenges, learning what he’s made of.

There’s so much variety in the job that no two days are ever the same. If it’s the English riding discipline clients are interested in, the training focus is preparing the young horse for activities like dressage and eventing. Horses that will be used in Western disciplines are introduced to reining (where intricate moves are performed at various speeds) and cutting (a ‘dance of three minds ‘– horse, rider, cattle –where a cow is cut from the herd and boxed).

Education is important to Ben and Natalie. They’ve already hosted field trips from local schools, and they’re keen to tap into the huge potential for developing leadership and management training workshops, like those popular in the United States, where participants learn self-awareness, interpersonal communication, conflict resolution and leadership and team building skills by working with horses using Natural Horsemanship techniques like those described above.

Ben wrangling a cavvy (a group of riding horses) shows the command a rider needs of his horse to control a herd’s natural inclination to run free.

The chemical free insect solution for your home!

Because horses are intelligent, highly sensitive to body language, extremely communicative and highly responsive to human interaction, they are the ideal choice for this kind of training. Their size and strength is also a powerful factor – the confidence that comes from building a trusting relationship with a horse is immeasurable, and something which can be readily transferred into confidence in other relationships requiring wise and sensitive management.

The focus in leadership and management training workshops, then, is on building relationship skills through horse-human interactions. With careful guidance from a Natural Horsemanship expert like Ben, participants work with their horse on the ground to develop a relationship of trust, learning to identify which of their own behaviours limits that development (for example fear) and coming to an understanding of how those limits might impact on their relationships in the workplace. The participant ‘learns by doing’, for many people a much more satisfactory and successful method than learning through lectures and text books.

Natalie, who was born in Warkworth, and who met Ben travelling in Hong Kong and China, focuses on the management side of the business. And there’s a new challenge coming up - with their first child due in August, there are even busier times ahead for the Longwells. Without doubt this’ll be one lucky kid who doesn’t have to beg for a pony!

No matter Western Colorado's conditions, Ben’s blue heeler-cross, Cobb, is still keen for more after a hard day at the ‘office’.

Before...

After!

We’ll make quick work of the tallest gorse on steep, hard-to-reach sites.

Steep gullies and hillsides are often left for gorse to overtake because it’s too difficult to control. Spraying requires a lengthy die-off period and still leaves the problem of removal. Burning can promote rapid re-growth and can damage non-target vegetation. With our new 22.5tonne machine and its fixed tooth

mulching head we go where no others have before. We’ll turn gorse-ridden land into productive farm land quickly and efficiently. You’ll save on spraying costs and re-vegetation or re-sowing can start immediately. Any gorse regrowth can then be more easily managed and maintained.

Helen Martin talks to Duncan McNab about preparing animals for Ag Day.

In our December issue, Duncan talked to Helen about judging criteria at school Ag Days. With lambing season upon us, it’s time now to talk about what’s needed to prepare animals for competition.

What are you aiming for in preparing an animal for Ag Day? The goal is to present a healthy, well-defined, mature animal.

That sounds like a pretty big ask. Where do you start? You need thorough preparation and a lot of effort. Firstly, a child needs the support of their family, and they need to research the categories (determined by the age and ability of the child), classes (meat, dairy, wool etc.) and sections (Handling, Leading, Rearing, Grooming). Once they get started, they need to be encouraged to keep going with it, for example on days when they get home from school tired and don’t feel like going out, some enthusiasm and interest from the parents can give them the boost they need.

How do you go about selecting your specific animal?Choose one as close to July 1 as possible, so there’s plenty of time to prepare the animal before Ag Day in September/October.

If you don’t have a suitable animal you’ll find local farmers

supportive as long as you give them plenty of notice and a friendly reminder closer to the start of birthing. Let them know you want the best genetic composite of the breed available.

It’s important to choose an animal the child can easily handle – bear in mind that lambs can be harder work with their fleece and dags, and goats can cause problems as they mature, especially in beautifully presented gardens.

What’s the number one thing the child needs to pay attention to in rearing their animal?Definitely the feeding regime. While the commercial way is to wean an animal as quickly and as cost effectively as possible, these animals are always relatively small. Size does count when you’re presenting an animal in competition and, because you want it to meet its maximum potential by judging day, you need to feed it to capacity to reach its full growth potential.

Start off feeding colostrum, which you can get from local dairy farmers and freeze to use when you take the baby animal home. In the first two weeks give the animal three to four small feeds of milk a day, then increase the quantity in 2 feeds a day, steadily increasing the volume. Lambs can drink up to 2 litres and calves can drink up to 16 litres of milk per feed twice a day when they’re at capacity. This way they get such a good start they do almost as well as those reared on the mother.

What other care do the animals need? They need to be warm. You don’t have to go as far as letting them in to share your bed, but they do need a warm, clean shelter like a dry shed with sawdust on the floor. When it’s fine they can be taken outside to graze.

It’s a good idea to provide your animal with a jute-lined cover, like an old, cut-up horse cover, to keep their fleece and coat clean. This helps prevent calves from growing a winter coat, making it easier for grooming.

How important is grooming?Very. Grooming must start as early as possible – straight away with calves and goats, when the fleece comes with lambs. You need to keep the animals clean, so if their wool or coat gets marked you need to wash it straight away or brush it when it’s dry. It’s a big job, so it’s a good idea to concentrate on grooming a different part each day. And on the day of the show you can shine up the hooves with beeswax.

As a daily commitment, grooming is a really valuable aspect to the child’s caring for and developing empathy with the animal.

What can the child do to prepare for showing the animal on the day?At the earliest possible opportunity start training it for the handling and leading sections of the competition. Practise leading, with a puppy collar for a lamb and a small halter for a calf or goat. Lead with the right hand so the animal is on your right side, where the judge can see it. Practise all the activities stipulated in the judging criteria so the animal and the child are both familiar with what is expected of them.

It sounds like a lot of hard work.Yes, it is if it’s done properly. It’s a very challenging and demanding commitment. Children really do get out of it what they put in. Being committed to the needs of a baby animal teaches a child compassion, empathy and self-discipline. There’s a sense of achievement for the winners, and if they have a really good animal they might get as far as the Royal Easter Show and compete for trophies like the McNab Cup, awarded to the ‘Best Beef Calf Reared for Ag Day’.

The main thing is, get the right animal, do the work and make it fun – if a child makes a go of it they’ll never forget their Ag Days.

It’s after four o’clock in the afternoon and very cool and quiet when the siren goes, said Don. Five or six of us volunteers dribble into the local garage where the truck with the 1936 Rolls engine is kept – I’m a bit excited because it’s my first fire - and Bob’s fussing around getting it ready. Bob’s the local garage owner and mechanic and he’s also the fire chief. He holds practices every week that you have to go to if you’re a volunteer. He keeps his truck in beautiful running order, polishing it every day and turning the engine over – everyone teases him that he spends more time with it than he does with his wife – but this afternoon he can’t get the bloody

shouting at Bob again, Give it more grunt you silly bugger! But his foot’s already flat to the boards.

As we get closer we see through a gap in the trees a group of people and patches of fire and the black skeleton of a smouldering house. Get out the hoses and we’ll douse what’s left of it! yells someone. So we jump off the truck, all hands to the pump, but blow me down Mick was right. When we turn on the hose there’s only a trickle. The tanks are dead empty.

Bob doesn’t say anything, he just looks. Then he walks over to the bloke standing with his family. Tears are running down the bloke’s cheeks and Bob puts his hand on his shoulder and he says, I’m sorry we took so long. The man doesn’t look at Bob, he just keeps on staring at what’s left of his house, and he says, That’s all right. Thank you very much for coming.

When we get back to the garage the rest of the town’s volunteers have turned up and we talk about how we could have saved the house, and by the time we’ve finished the keg we’re all starting to believe that we had put out the fire, even Bob, said Don.

thing to start!

The fire’s out in the country about 15 miles away, so we’re all giving Bob plenty of advice, especially when he has to get the crank out to start the truck. Doug offers to get out and push and Mick says there’s probably not enough water on board to put out the fire. But Bob won’t join in. All he’ll say is that the machine’s in fine shape and that’s that.

So we chug along the road at about 20 miles an hour and finally we spot a wisp of smoke in the distance. We pull into a long driveway and we can see flickering flames in the dull light between a row of pine trees. We start

The banks I’m talking about are those steep, not particularly plant-friendly slopes that most of us have at least one of in our gardens.

Often they’re in prominent positions, such as right outside the front door, or directly in your line of sight when you look out the living room window. It’s likely the bank is the result of having cut into a hillside to make a house platform or create a driveway to the house site.

Generally, the banks are clay of the highest calibre, and of a gradient that makes garden maintenance a challenge.

“I’ve got this awful bank and I need to cover it with plants,” is a comment we often hear from customers in the nursery. I’ll explain here some of the ways we tackle banks – and some of the pitfalls you might encounter.

First up, weeds. Before you plant, the bank needs to be free of weeds. If it’s

a freshly cut bank, it can stay weed-free for up to a couple of years, which sounds great, except that shows just how inhospitable the clay is.

If weeds have seeded on your bank, or perhaps you have kikuyu climbing down from above, they need to be nuked with weed-killer, or, if you prefer, pulled out by hand. If the weed is well established, a second application of weed-killer to catch any regrowth might be necessary before you plant.

Next comes planting preparation. Around about this stage many planters are tempted to cover the bank in good topsoil, thinking this will provide a better home for the plants they’re about to put in the ground. But resist the temptation – for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the topsoil is likely to wash off in the next heavy downpour of rain. And secondly, topsoil is full of weed seed, and once you have spread out the soil, the seeds will germinate and cause you more problems.

In addition, Auckland’s air is full of weed seeds hoping to land somewhere they can take root. If they land on your freshly spread topsoil, they’ll be thinking it’s Christmas. But topsoil is important for your bank plantings. Best practice is to dig good-sized holes in the clay. Take the clay away, then fill the holes with your good soil for planting.

So what’s best to put into those holes?

There are two basic styles we use when planting banks: either ground covers or upright plants, or a mix of the two, with the upright shrubs behind the ground covers. Once again, our friends the weeds have a bearing on what we do.

If you choose upright plants, whether shrubs, grasses or perennials, it’s relatively simple to get in among them to spray the weeds. As your shrubs grow and form a canopy, you get a lot less weed growth. It sounds easy, but the end result is heavily dependent on your being vigilant and keeping control of the weeds while your plants establish.

If you prefer the idea of ground covers the project gets a little more complicated, which brings us to the question of ‘to weed-mat or not to weed-mat?’

If you cover your bank in weed-mat, then plant through it, your bank will be as low-maintenance as you can make it. The drawback is that you have to put up with looking at the black weed-mat until the ground covers smother it. And of course, there’s the cost of the weed-mat, the pins and your time in laying it.

Without weed-mat, weeds are guaranteed to pop up through the ground cover plants and the issue then is how to eradicate them. Chemical spraying without hitting the ground covers is nigh on impossible. Physically pulling or digging the weeds also often results in damage to your plants, plus you’re likely to have to clamber over the plants to access the weeds.

Two years after planting, Coprosma 'Hawera' is well on its way to covering this weed-matted bank.

So you can see the dilemma. But whichever method you choose, your planting pattern for ground covers will be the same. Start planting no more than 50cm down from the top of the bank, as the plants will naturally grow downwards. If you start planting too low you will end up with a bare patch across the top.

You can stop planting a metre up from the bottom of the bank as most ground covers will easily hang down that far. One metre apart is normal spacing, but you can plant as close as 50cm

apart if you are in a hurry to get the bank covered. If using multiple types of ground covers, make sure you plant each type in big enough clumps or groups for maximum impact. If you use too many different types of plants, and/or small groups, the end result can look bitsy.

My preference is for just one type of ground cover planted en masse, and often I like to give the bank a formal look by planting an upright shrub or tree at regular spacing along the bank.

If you’re not going to use ground

covers and prefer the idea of upright shrubs, flaxes, grasses and perennials, spacing will depend on the mature size of your chosen plants. The idea is to have your plants touching quite quickly, so they cover the bank completely and smother those weeds, cutting down the need for maintenance. As with ground covers, grouping your upright plants in big, bold drifts looks great on a bank.

So there you go: well thought-out planting on a bank can turn an eyesore into a feature.

under this ground cover lurks a retaining wall and a steep clay bank. Flaxes are tough, colourful and effective on a bank.

It’s now getting really wet out there and if, like most of us, you don’t have an arena to ride in, the days of riding in your paddocks are over for a few months.

But if you have a float or truck there are several ways of getting out and about with your horse over winter.

If you know someone lucky enough to have an arena, you may be able to hire it occasionally. Arenas take a lot of upkeep, so offering to help maintain it and pick up any of your horses’ droppings will be appreciated by the owner.

Meeting up with friends and heading out to your nearest beach is wonderful for you and your horse. Sand provides good footing and your horse can enjoy a splash in the water. As a bonus, salt water is good for healing any cuts and scratches. Alternatively, you can find a farm with limestone/metal races to have a nice hack over.

Some local clubs still have lots going on. Just about every month in Rodney there is dressage, showhunter or showjumping at Woodhill Sands Equestrian Centre in Kumeu. They also often have coaching clinics.

Local hunt clubs will still be meeting a few times a week and if you know someone who is a member you may be able to go along as a visitor. Permission from the Master of the Hunt will be required and a fee is payable for the day. Be aware that your horse must be well mannered and you must have good control over your horse. The member you go with will advise on the correct attire and protocol.

As paddocks get wetter you will have to keep a closer eye on your horse’s feet. Mud fever is common at this time of the year. It is a fungal infection causing scabbing and inflammation around the fetlock and pastern. This is a painful condition, but there are good products on the market to treat this. (Contact your Veterinarian).

Standing in a waterlogged paddock is not good for a horse. Management suggestions include:

• Ifthere’sanavailablegateway, putsomemetalweretheystand to help keep their feet a little drier

• Tryandgetthemontoadrierarea(e.g.ayardwithshavings/post peel) at least for part of the day. This can be a good place to feed out your hay without it getting trampled into the dirt

• Don’twashyourhorse’slegstoooftenunlessyouareable to dry them off adequately

• Ifyouarenotridingfrequentlyordoinganyroadworkyou may want to remove your horse’s shoes for the winter. Be aware that they may become quite soft if your horse is standing in wet conditions and that keeping up with trimming is also important.

Hopefully you are still out there enjoying some time with our equine friends. Happy horsin’
