Despite Mother Nature’s unwillingness to cooperate, Sunset on the Harbor spon-sored by Whitney National Bank was still a fun, fun event. More than 50 Cham-ber members left the docks aboard the Destiny at noon. They returned with stringers full of fi sh after a journey that took them 27 miles offshore. The captain obviously found a hot spot for fi shing.

It was our fi rst Corporate Fishing Challenge. But the challenge came more from battling the weather and “reports from the participants” of golf ball-size hail just eight miles off the East Pass as they were returning. But everyone in the group who fi shed that I talked with after they arrived back at the dock (safely, by the way) said it was a blast and they look forward to doing it all again. As always, Mary Anne Windes and Captain Kelly Windes were awesome dur-ing the event. Jami Jones at Destin Charter Service was incredible handling the details of the tournament. It was an event that could not have run smoother – until the storms hit.

The weather put a damper on the evening festivities. Even with the storms, many people enjoyed the great food at the fi sh fry. John Olivarez and his crew at Fisherman’s Wharf always do an outstand-ing job.

And special thanks to Kathy Whidden for managing a very successful silent auction during the event.

Other Chamber ThingsI had the pleasure of host-

ing Leadership Okaloosa in early May. Working with Julie Cotton, the class had a day-long adventure in and around Destin. With your chairman, Mike Freeman of Whitney National Bank, we opened the session at Henderson Beach State Park (a hidden gem, if you’ve never been, you need to go!) and gave them an over-view of Destin and the Cham-ber. Presentations from Greg Kisela and Ken Gallander of the City covered the harbor boardwalk and the CRAs and future development in Destin. Helen Donaldson discussed

the fi shing rodeo. Captain Kelly Windes discussed the harbor’s history, the charter boat business, and shared some great stories during lunch at Fisherman’s Wharf.

That was followed by a tour of the East Pass and the Crab Island area north of the bridge aboard the Southern Star. Captain Cliff Atwell and Steve Wilson did a fantastic job “fi nding” dolphin in the Gulf and in the bay. We even saw a shark or two in the pass. And the day ended touring the Destin History and Fishing Museum with Jean Melvin.

Why do I share that with you? To show you how members of the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce and our community do a great job of working with groups to give the best information about Destin. Many of the participants in the class had never seen nor heard what they saw and learned that day. I always enjoy the expressions of appreciation we receive after events such as that. Thank you, Julie, for includ-ing Destin in the leadership program!

The legislative session ended recently. During the session, your Destin Area Chamber Board of Direc-tors passed two resolutions against two bills. One would have exempted online travel companies from paying their fair share of bed tax on the full price they charge for accom-modations. That bill died in committee.

The other resolution passed by your board supported keeping local control of the Mid Bay Bridge Authority rather than consolidating it into the state toll authority. Your board would like to

thank Senator Don Gaetz for understanding the position of many local organizations and pulling the MBBA from that consolidation. We hope to have our legislators at an up-coming chamber lunch soon to give you their views on the session and what to expect as they begin preparations for next year’s session.

Finally, as summer arrives, it is so pleasing to see the smiles on the faces of so many business owners in our com-munity, especially the resort management and accom-modations companies! All indications are the summer looks very strong. We need it. Be sure to thank all of our visitors when they visit your business. Thank them for choosing Destin as their vaca-tion destination. They have other choices.

And I encourage you to help us take control of our local economy. Shop locally, buy locally. Members of the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce have all the products and services you need and want, so there is no reason to go online and buy from some out of the area business. Whether you realize it or not, Destin’s success with tourism large-ly depends on a strong dollar. Your fi rst response might be, “how?” or “why?” If you are like most, a strong dollar probably doesn’t enter into your daily thought process, if ever. However, for the moment, let’s ponder the relationship of a strong dollar and Destin’s success.

The US dollar is the currency most used in international trans-actions and is one of the world’s reserve currencies. Let’s just say the strengthening and weakening of the US dollar has far reach-ing implications on economies all across the globe. So you ask, what in the world does this have to do with little ole Destin? Quite frankly, it has a lot to do with Destin and its prospects for prosperity.

Let’s talk about the inverse relationship with the US dollar and commodities. First, what is a commodity? A commodity is sim-ply a product of uniform quality and generally traded across global markets. There are two types of commodities, “hard” and “soft.” Examples of hard commodities are crude oil, gold, and silver. Soft commodities would be something like soybean, rice, and wheat since

they have a short shelf life. Ok, I know, get to the point.

I promise, I am about to tie it all together. Crude oil, a commod-ity, is priced in US dollars, and it becomes less attractive to investors with foreign currencies when the US dollar strengthens and more attractive when the US dollar weakens. Basically, the strengthen-ing US dollar generally devalues the investor’s holdings in com-modities, which can prompt a sell off of holdings in crude oil as well as other commodities. As a result of a drop in demand for the crude oil commodity, its price subse-quently falls. And, as we all know, crude oil is refi ned into gasoline. Eventually, the fall in crude oil prices translates into a decline in gasoline prices at the pump.

I think we can all agree that Destin is predominantly a drive-in destination for most of its visi-

tors with the rest choosing to fl y. Cheaper gas and cheaper airline tickets equal more visitors willing to spend more time and dollars in our area. So the short answer is a strong dollar is good for Destin.

I would be remiss if I didn’t give a big shout out to the Destin Area Chamber’s Harbor Committee and Mary Anne Windes, its Chair, for a wonderful day of fi shing at the 3rd Annual Sunset on the Harbor. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate for the evening festivi-ties; however, the afternoon Cham-ber Fishing for Business challenge was outstanding. There were 54 Chamber members and guests who boarded the party boat Destiny for an afternoon of networking and plain good ole fun. The Captain and his mates were terrifi c hosts and made the experience memo-rable for all. I am pretty certain everyone aboard caught fi sh based

on my observations and feedback from others. More importantly, it reminded all of us how lucky we are to live and work in an area that offers such great fi shing. I encour-age you to take advantage of what the Destin Harbor has to offer whether it’s fi shing, boating, dining, or simply strolling along the harbor.

Last, but not least, please investigate the Chamber’s highly recognized business leadership program known as Destin For-ward. It’s a wonderful program that introduces and educates our present and future leaders on the Destin community and its assets. Brooks Brothers Factory Store Make-A-Wish

Every year Brooks Brothers proudly lends its support to the Make-A-Wish Foundation by raising donations at their stores nationwide. This year the Brooks Brothers Fac-tory Store at Silver Sands Factory Stores in Destin raised $5,000, the most donations in their division and, on April 14, celebrated with wish kid Jess from the Make-A-Wish Founda-tion of Central and Northern Florida.

Okaloosa Schools Celebrate Change for Children

Ken Hair, President/CIC, presents trophy to the winning high school, Choctawhatchee High School.

Okaloosa County schools cel-ebrated the success of their Change for Children campaign on April 19 with a pizza party at the Niceville Community Center. The schools raise money for Children in Crisis, Inc., throughout the year by collect-ing change in classrooms, hosting bake sales, and having talent shows. The Florida Fidelis Tau Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa hosted the end-of-year event to celebrate the success and generosity of these students.

Cox Cablethon Raises $28,000 for Covenant Hospice

The 39th Annual Cox Cable-thon benefi ting Covenant Hospice successfully raised $28,000 in net revenue for the not-for-profi t orga-nization. All proceeds benefi t special programs in Okaloosa and Walton counties. These programs include be-reavement services, children’s support services, and chaplain services, which are funded solely through fundraising efforts like the Cablethon. Event pro-ceeds and donations from individuals and businesses also allow Covenant Hospice to provide care to anyone, regardless of their ability to pay.

Realtors Make Their Voices Heard in Tallahassee

More than 40 Realtors from the Emerald Coast Association of Real-tors traveled to Tallahassee on April 12 and 13 for Great American Real-tor Days. Florida Realtors organize Great American Realtor Days each year to give realtors the opportunity to meet with legislators during the legislative session and speak with them on issues important to property owners.

Fort Walton Beach Medical Center Earns National Award

The American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association have awarded Fort Walton Beach Medical Center the Gold Plus Award for outstanding specialized stroke treatment. Fort Walton Beach Medical Center is the only hospital in Okaloosa County to earn this recognition.

Humanitarian Award Recipients Announced

Three members of the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center family were recently awarded the Frist Humanitarian Award, the highest honor an employee, physician, and volunteer can receive at HCA, the medical center’s parent company. This year’s honors go to Jeanine Robinson, a respiratory therapist who works in the respiratory care department; Dr. Joseph Siefker, an ENT physician and surgeon; and Carol Koch, an active member of the

hospital auxiliary.

Gulf World Marine Institute Receives Donations

Governor Rick Scott and mem-bers of the cabinet presented Ron Hardy, co-owner of Gulf World Marine Park, a check for $5,000. Kentucky Derby Day Winning Recipes

Mixologists from around Northwest Florida juiced up the creativity and style at HarborWalk Village for a regional bartender competition featuring the Ken-tucky Derby’s classic cocktail, The Mint Julep. The fi rst place win was Patrick Bolster from 5 ½ at Vinyl Music Hall in Downtown Pensacola. Second place winners were Jackie Pratt and Chris Mc-Cormack of McQuire’s Irish Pub of Destin, and there was a tie for third place show winners, Brenda Coffee of AJ’s Seafood & Oyster Bar and Robert Webb of Poppy’s Crazy Lobster in HarborWalk Village, Destin.

Major Michael Borders, Commander of the Eglin Security Forces Squadron, was the special guest speaker at the April Destin Area Chamber of Commerce Military Af-fairs Committee meeting. He briefed the

Air rate and schedule are applicable for groups of 10 or more traveling on the

same flights and dates. To complete your vacation, we include roundtrip airport-to-hotel transfers when

purchasing Collette airfare with your tour. If you have arranged for your own air, we

are pleased to provide you the option of purchasing these transfers. Please note that

all transfers will leave at pre-scheduled times.

Due to tour scheduling, flights on Day 1 should arrive prior to 4:00 PM.

*Pebble Beach is closed during pro-golf tournaments.

This tour requires average physical activity. You should be in good health, able to

climb stairs and walk reasonable distances, possibly over uneven grounds and

cobblestone streets.
