The JS classrooms continue to be full of learning, discussion, problem-solving and laughter. There is a lot of

activity as final assessments are underway and staff and students are starting preparations for another end of

year extravaganza!

INTER-HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL

We were very fortunate to have a lovely day at the Charters Towers Aquatic Centre for this year’s Junior

School Inter-House Swimming Carnival.

Congratulations to all students who participated in the carnival. Although I was unable to attend this year, it

was wonderful to hear the students gave their all and were determined to do their personal best and support

their team.

Thank you, Miss Taylor for co-ordinating this year’s event. Thanks also to our committed staff and the many

parents who volunteered their time to help out in an official capacity and came along to support the event. We

are so blessed to have such a supportive community at All Souls. It is what makes us a unique school and

events like the Inter-House Swimming Carnival, run so smoothly.

We wish the All Souls St Gabriels’ competitors all the very best for this year’s

Inter-School Swimming Carnival on Friday 3 November.

CYBER-SAFETY

The Australian Health curriculum supports students to develop knowledge, understandings and skills to

create opportunities and take action to enhance their own and other’s health, well-being and safety.

Young people today are immersed in digital technologies. They use the Internet, mobile phones, tablets and

other devices to study, socialise, exchange ideas and play. While online activity has many benefits, there are

also risks.

At All Souls, our students safety and well-being is a priority. Helping students to develop appropriate

behaviours when using digital technologies, both at school and home is a responsibility we all share.

I would like to thank Detective Senior Constable Lynette Nelis (Charters Towers Child Protection and

Investigation Unit) and Senior Constable Trish Machin (Charters Towers School Liaison Officer) from the

Charters Towers Police Station, for taking time out of their busy schedules to present a cyber-safety

information session for our Year 5 and Year 6 students.

The session was very engaging and informative. It provided the students the opportunity to understand the

role of the Child Protection and Investigation Unit and discuss some of the legalities and potential risks

involved with using the Internet and Social Media platforms in a structured and safe environment.

I would also like to thank DSC Lynette Nelis and SC Trish Machin for attending the recent JSSG meeting and

providing information for interested parents and guardians, about what they can do to reduce the risks for

their children using the Internet and digital technologies.

ICAS ENGLISH

Earlier this year, 21 Junior School students from Year 2 – 6 completed the 2017 ICAS English paper. Congratulations to Grace Turner who was awarded a Distinction, Bailey McGuire, Bridget Boyle, Clancy Twine, Hunter McKellar and Perren Samarasekera who received a Credit and to Lucie Taylor who received a certificate of Merit.

I would also like to acknowledge the effort and achievement of the 24 JS students who completed this year’s AMC. ORIENTATION & TRANSITION DAYS

YEAR 7 ORIENTATION (OCT 31 – NOV 2, 2017)

Next week, our Year 6 class will enjoy a couple of days in the Secondary School, joining other Year 6 students in an Orientation Program. This program is planned to introduce students to some of the key staff who will be guiding their transition and learning in the Secondary School during 2018. The program will give our Year 6 class an opportunity to meet students who will be joining them in 2018 and be introduced to some of the routines, procedures and expectations of Year 7.

PREP & YEAR 1 TRANSITION DAY (Wednesday November 1, 2017)

This year, we are able to provide our current Pre-Prep and Prep students (and students who will be joining our 2018 Prep and Year 1 classes), with a full day of learning and fun .

Our current Prep students will enjoy a day with Mrs. Marshall and the Year 1 Muppets while our Pre-Preps will enjoy a day being learners in the Prep classroom with Mrs Riddle.

PRE-PREP ORIENTATION MORNING (SATURDAY NOVEMBER 4, 2017)

All Souls St Gabriels School understands that a child’s first year in a ‘school environment’ is an important one and involves a number of significant changes in your child’s life. Pre-prep is a year when children are seen moving towards independence, developing self-esteem, making connections, building positive relationships and becoming confident and involved learners.

We recognise the importance of children being able to confidently and happily make the transition between home and ‘school’ and are looking forward to meeting the 2018 Pre-Prep children and their families on Saturday, 4 November. This w ill be a relaxed morning of play and orientation.

STAFF CHANGES 2018

We are very fortunate to be able to recruit and retain highly skilled, multi-talented and dedicated teaching staff. Next year, some of the JS teachers will be taking on a different role at ASSG.

Mrs Peagham will be moving to the Secondary School as a Year 7 tutor and teacher of English and HASS. In addition to being an excellent Kindergarten teacher, Mrs Peagham has qualifications in these subject areas and is looking forward to using this knowledge teaching junior secondary students.

In 2018, Mrs Riddle will be taking on the role as the Pre-Prep Director and Kindergarten teacher. We are fortunate to have Mrs Riddle’s experience and dedication to early years learning to maintain the continuity and excellence of the teaching and learning we provide for our Pre-Prep students.

Miss Taylor will be utilising her training as a Secondary HPE and Science teacher in 2018. Although Miss Taylor will continue to assist Mrs Heuir with the ASSG Dance and Gym classes, she won’t be teaching JS HPE or co-ordinating JS Sport in 2018.

We are very fortunate that Miss Browne is also trained as a Primary HPE teacher and is keen to take on the role as JS HPE teacher and Sport Co-ordinator in 2018.

CLASS STRUCTURES 2018

We are currently planning our 2018 class structures and staffing based on the knowledge of current and prospective enrolments. To assist us with this planning, please let us know if your child will not be returning to ASSG in 2018.

Additionally, if you know families who are moving to Charters Towers and considering which school would best meet their children’s needs, please suggest they contact Mr Jon Teichmann (Head of Marketing and Enrolments), [email protected] or call the Junior School Office on 4788 2242.

Enrolment packs are also available for parents who are looking to enrol their child in our 2018 Pre-prep Kindergarten program (3 Day and 5 Day options are available).

At All Souls, we pride ourselves on recruiting experienced, dedicated staff who understand our values and will complement the excellent team we have in the JS. PERSONAL THANK YOU

Some may have noticed that I have been absent from the Junior School in the past couple of weeks. Unfortunately, I required surgery on my left leg and have spent some time in the Mater Hospital. This has meant that I was unable to attend the Inter-House Swimming Carnival and some of our communications to the parent community have been delayed. I would like to thank the JS staff and the School community for their understanding and support.

As we move towards the end of the academic year, we want all of our students to feel that they have accomplished their ‘personal best’. We look forward to celebrating their successes at the JS Assemblies, Preliminary Prize Giving and at Speech Day.

Once again thank you for your continued support during this term, a very exciting and busy one for us all.

Pre-Prep Mrs Peagham, Mrs Limkin & Mrs Cragg

As the middle of Term 4 looms it is a great opportunity to reflect on what we have already learnt and explored and what is ahead!

In Numeracy, we have been talking about fractions – whole things and parts of things. We have been thinking about how we can divide a whole object to create equal parts so it is fair for everyone. Stories have been helping us to understand divide, equal, whole and parts. We have been dividing fruit, jam sandwiches, pizzas and blocks. We use the words ‘whole’ and ‘parts’ a lot when we are cooking – sometimes we have a whole cup of flour and sometimes only a part of a cup for our recipes. We love cutting our fruit in half, but we have to make sure both halves are the same so they are equal parts.

In Literacy, we are listening for those very important rhyming words throughout our day. We are explicitly learning more letters in the alphabet and the sounds they make including Aa, Dd, Gg, Qq, Pp and Bb. Did you know the letter ‘Q’ actually makes two sounds! Q uses the sounds ‘K-W.’ The alphabet is so tricky when we are exploring sounds – the letter A sounds different in a variety of words including apple, apricot, arm and Austin.

We are doing a great job thinking about what sounds our letters make and how our mouths, tongues, throats and teeth have to change when we use different sounds. Speech therapist Ms Michelle from Talk NQ has been conducting sessions to help us and our educators, to develop our oral language and thinking when speaking and reading. The whole of the Junior School staff have been attending professional development with Talk NQ to continue our commitment to Literacy, Literature and Language.

We have been using our imaginations to pretend a lot! From our HASS unit of Reusing, Reducing and Recycling we created art using shed rubbish! We have been imagining what our rubbish robots could do if they were real. We have given our robots names and will share our ideas with our friends during Sharing Time.

In the Arts, we are exploring Drama. Our imaginations were ignited with the beginning of a story, ‘There was once a boy who was getting ready to visit his grandmother when he tripped on his cloth of dreams and tore it…’ We have been imagining what a cloth of dreams is, what it would be made of, what it would feel like and smell like? We have created our own cloth of dreams and thought about what we could use it for. We have been exploring how we can change our voices and our body movements to pretend to be people from Dreamland. This unit is an excellent introduction to Drama as we start developing our performance for the end of year concert.

In Geography, we are exploring the differences between built, natural and technological environments. We understand that we will see different objects in built environments like a city and a town. We are exploring a variety of natural environments including the rainforest, desert and ocean and will investigate technological environments including the Internet. We continue to use

the desktop computers and we are learning to use digital cameras and the iPad to take photographs of our achievements and those of our friends in ICT.

In Science, we have continued to think about how we change our clothes, food and activity choices when the weather changes, but we are now exploring how the weather changes during different times of the year – Seasons. We have been very excited to discover what season our birthday’s fall on. We are looking forward to learning how animals and plants behave during the different seasons throughout the year.

News From Prep:

Margaret Riddle and Vanessa Herring

The children returned this term remembering some “gifts” that they had made and set aside for a Year 10 student who they have befriended. On one of their “litter walks”, a boomerang was found on the oval. It was named and the children sought out the owner – Kane. He had made the boomerang in his Technology class. Kane kindly made the children two boomerangs as thanks. And so the “thank yous” continued! They then wanted to make him an armband, pencil case and carry-all for his school work. Senior students heard about this and Kane popped in one day to receive his gifts. They feel they have a friend in the Senior School and it is quite special to see them interacting with him and his mates as we move around the School.

A few of the accompanying photos show more learning around the geographical theme of Place. They have been using the blocks to create and add features to homes and farms that make the places special. It is learning that is used in their assessment and the child’s talking about their thinking can show significant depth of understanding. What looked like a basic road to me was actually an archaeological find of ancient pathways leading to a number of places in Queensland.

Our learning about measurement has continued with the children solving problems with volume and mass. They particularly enjoy weighing items from their lunch boxes; comparing packets of popcorn, cheese dips or fruit. We have been having lots and lots and lots of lessons on those teen numbers. The children have been using a variety of materials to help them understand that the position of the first 1 is a 10’s place value. Such tricky understanding! The children were finally given a list of questions based on this understanding and they were so smug when they all correctly completed the tasks with no adult help.

Some help that you may be noticing is the colours that are shaded in their handwriting books. An occupational therapist suggested that this be done and it has been beneficial in keeping letters within the correct spaces. Thank you for helping to guide the children of a morning when it is a handwriting exercise in their books.

Thank you too for completing all the family histories with your children. We hope it was a valuable time together. The children will now retell their history to a small group, using the timeline that you have made.

The children continue to write each day. Much of the writing

is guided by us as we help them form sentences and spell words. The writing that delights us the most is that which is being shown above the windows in the room. Labels for maps and collage pieces, a rhyme that can be used as a game, stories that go with collage characters and even a prayer! It is writing that springs straight from the child’s thinking and little of it is done with our help. It makes for a deep connection with reading, writing and the telling of stories.

We just had to quickly capture one of those special moments that happen in the outdoor area this week. Workers were busy on our long-awaited shade sails over the side play equipment when a couple of the children decided to help the best way they knew how. Friends were alerted, chairs were fetched and placed, bodies eased into the right position and they were ready. Then came the calls out to advise, question and order as the ever-patient groundsmen worked on. We hope you enjoy the pictures. Wonder where the children learnt all of this from?

Mrs Marshall’s Muppets

This term has flown by with the children getting involved in many different activities. Our theme of the Jungle has inspired many to get creative and have a bit of fun. Firstly we made parrots from the childrens’ hand shapes. Then we moved on to making monkeys and red eyed tree frogs. The classroom looks amazing with the vines hanging down and monkeys attached.

We have also discovered how to make a story board. This helps the children plan the animal narrative they will write next week. The plan has to show characters, setting, a problem, a solution and a conclusion. Below are some of the childrens’ works. Many kids have chosen jungle animals to write their stories as they got ideas from other stories I have read to them in class.

Maths has involved revision and consolidation of tens and ones. They have also learnt much about 3D objects. Some have faces, corners and curved surfaces. At the moment the children are practising take away facts on the board. This is a little harder to do since they have mainly practiced add on facts.

During reading groups some children are focusing on their expression. Others need to pay particular attention to flipping the vowel sound from a short to a long sound. The children love this time of the day because they sit on beanbags with their mates and support each other whilst reading.

The Muppets have been walking around the School trying to find dark and light places. Some children tried the wheelie bin and the sports shed. I think I enjoyed this more than they did. Ha ha ha. We also found places to sit quietly and listen to sounds. When we sat near the oval the kids heard trucks on the highway, children playing in the pool, the senior school bell and lots of birds.

As we head into the back end of the year, I will be preparing the children for the year ahead. I will miss the little Muppets but I am so proud of how far they have come. Until next time….Miss Piggy

Talented Twos

Miss Melissa Browne

A new page has been turned in Year 2 this term. After a nice restful break the students were all ready to give

one hundred percent to any task thrown their way. Since returning to school for the final term in Year 2, the

students have been learning how to become independent learners to prepare them for their big move to Year

3. We have particularly enjoyed learning with our Year 5 buddies. We started the term off by looking for ways

to improve our reading. Since then, we have also had a go at improving our writing. Our big buddies have

helped us to write the ending to a narrative. We then looked closely at the editing process and the importance

of adding more detail and descriptive language to our writing.

In Week 2, the Year 2 students also took part in a water walk around All Souls St Gabriels School with their

Year 5 buddies. We went on a mission to identify all the sources of water at our School and to determine ways

that we could help save water. The Year 5 students were a big help and we were thankful to have them

helping us to find water sources along the way. Thank you Mr Roughley and Year 5 for all the help you have

given the Year 2s throughout the year!

The students have also loved taking a step back in time to explore the ways we used to mine for gold. After

learning about the first finders of gold here in Charters Towers, the students took a very informative tour of

the Venus Battery. They learnt about the beginnings of Charters Towers and the importance of gold in the

creation of our town. The students particularly enjoyed learning about the machinery that was used back in

1872 and hearing what it would have been like to work there. It was extremely loud when all of the machines

were working at once. Thank you to Reggie, Mrs Polsen and Mateo for accompanying us on our excursion.

We have had an exciting start to our Drama unit this term. The Year 2 class joined forces with Mrs Marshall

and the Year 1s to learn some drama techniques. Mrs Marshall has introduced the students to using their

voices and bodies to take on the role of zombies, using their ‘posh’ voices to practise their pronunciation and

introduced them to a number of fun games to help them with their expression and body movements. With the

help of Mrs Polsen, Mateo, Thilo and Mrs Herring, we have been working in our drama groups to practise our

group plays. The students had the opportunity to try different roles and practise the lines of different

characters. We truly had a blast! We can’t wait to share what we have learnt with you later in the term. Watch

Year 3 Rock Stars News: Mrs Laura Heuir

English Blurb

If you need to catch a fox, a fantastic fox at that, the Year 3 Rock Stars will tell you how NOT to do it! They have enjoyed reading Roald Dahl’s novel ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ and just can’t believe the lengths that the crazy farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean will go to in their quest to capture the fox family. The students have identified many situations in the text that will form the basis of their spoken procedure and have enjoyed taking on the role of different characters in written tasks. They have started practising their presentation skills using ‘BOLD’’ which stands for Body Language, Organisation, Language and Delivery. I can ’t wait to see what the students create when they begin writing their speeches.

Maths Blurb

Measurement, measurement and more measurement! Mathematics this term has focused on measuring mass, length, volume and time. The students have enjoyed the hands on learning activities that they have completed to reinforce these concepts. They have played games, weighed masses, measured distances and compared volumes using measuring devices. Reading clock times in both analogue and digital formats have given the children a hard time, but with continued daily practice, it is only a matter of time before they master this skill. They have also begun learning to read simple timetables and calculate problems involving time duration. It won’t be long before they will be keeping me on time throughout the school day!

Science Blurb

The students continue to love Science this term as they investigate two of the properties of matter, solids and liquids. Investigations have been fun, hands-on and have taught the students much about the properties of different solids and liquids. One of their favourite experiments was the ‘Viscosity Race”. The students learnt that different liquids have different viscosity. Liquids with low viscosity will flow easily and those with high viscosity are thick and flow slowly. They loved watching the liquids race to the finish line and were able to further their understanding of the properties of liquids through this investigation. Next, they will examine the effects of adding or taking heat to different types of matter and draw conclusions on their findings. What a bunch of mad but intelligent little scientists we have.

History Blurb

In History, not only have the children been learning about continuity and change in the local community, but they have also investigated the process of historical inquiry. Historical inquiry is posing questions and finding information from different sources. The students have analysed photographs from the past and observed features that have both remained the same or changed over time. Next week they will visit the All Souls Historical Museum, where they will learn about continuity and change within their school community. Here are some historical inquiry questions that the students have created by studying information in sources from our history lessons.

YEAR 4—Mrs Turner

TEAM TURNER ALL STARS

We have had some interesting and enjoyable learning experiences so far this term and many more to come

before the end of Year 4.

This term, we will be heading up to the Secondary School to not only take advantage of the Computer Labs,

but also a Science Lab. Our final assessment task for our Science unit involves friction and there are some

wonderful resources in the lab that we will have a chance to use in our investigations.

We have another design challenge for Technology this term. I’m not giving anything away yet, but I will put a

call out now for any shoeboxes. We will need 18 in total so if you have one you can part with, please start

sending them in. (I will own up and say that I have quite a few at home I can bring in so don’t panic if you

don’t have any.)

I have added photos of some of our uses for the mini-whiteboards in Mathematics. These have proven very

helpful when studying equivalent fractions, mixed numbers and improper fractions. There’s also a selection of

some of our final art pieces from last term.

Finally, I’ve added some photos of a challenge we had in Science which helped our understanding of paired

forces, gravity and friction, plus some other Science fun. We used the outdoor play equipment while exploring

forces in action. Paper helicopters were created to investigate gravity and friction frogs to learn about low and

high friction.

We are looking forward to the jam-packed, fun-filled learning we still have ahead!

Year 5 News Mr Rob Roughley It is hard to believe we are already half-way through Term 4.

This term, for Design and Technology/Art, we will be moving away from creating projects using electronic devices and using our imagination to design and create Monsters, Aliens and Robots from papier mache. The class are very excited about this project and are in the process of planning and sourcing base materials for their free-standing creature. Some of the designs I have so far seen are fantastic however, it is important the class remember to keep their project simple and around 30 to 40 cm in size. During our Art days, it would be great if your child could bring in some old clothes to change into as it will be very messy and the papier mache glue may stain and damage their uniforms.

The last Year 5 Assembly Presentation for 2017 was wonderful to watch and as always, a little bit of a challenge to ensure everyone had the opportunity to be heard. It was fantastic to hear what each student found of interest in their learning, what they liked about this year and what they hoped to achieve in 2018. It is lovely to know Junior School have so many Year 5s already giving serious thought to the leadership roles they would like to fulfil next year.

Over the next few weeks in HASS, our class will continue to examine natural disasters and complete their Household Emergency Plan booklet. While some of the information can be sourced from in class activities, other parts will need the help of family as they will relate to individual contact details and other important contact numbers. At the end of term, Year 5 will know how to prepare for an emergency, what items should be in an emergency evacuation kit and be familiar with your family’s own action plan. At the end of the term the booklet will be sent home for inclusion in your own Family’s Emergency Kit.

I would like to extend my thanks for the feedback many of you have already provided on our trial of English Stars program. This is an interesting program that has activities and assessment designed to meet the content covered directly in the Year 5 curriculum. The great thing about English Stars is that students and their parents can hop into the Student Portfolio to review progress. Unlike Literacy Planet which has a great focus on spelling and grammar activities, English Stars provides an excellent opportunity for Year 5 to write, discuss, design, record, publish and create different texts. Please keep that feedback coming, particularly about usability and ease of access.

And yes, not long until we start working on our performance for the End of Year Concert.

Year 6 NEWS Mrs Marilyn Toohey

Term 4 is always very busy as we focus on completing our work in all subject areas ready for Semester 2 reports, trying to achieve some of the goals set earlier in the year as Junior School leaders and preparing for Year 7 Orientation in Week 5.

The Year 6 class are also speculating on who the likely recipients of various end of year awards will be and looking forward to their Year 6 lunch on their very last day in Junior School.

In class, aspects of both Science and English are being assessed as the children orally present the information they have found whilst researching the advantages and disadvantages of one particular way to generate electricity. They will then be required to complete a comparison table of advantages and disadvantages for six different ways to generate electricity and write a few paragraphs to explain which way they believe to be the best and why. I am really looking forward to hearing the results and finding out which children can put forward a convincing argument supporting their choice. The six different methods of electricity generation being researched are hydro, water, fossil fuels, geothermal/bioenergy, wind and solar.

In Mathematics, the children are currently exploring reflections, translations and rotations (flips, slides and turns) of various shapes as well as tessellations (tiling patterns). These activities are very different to many number type math activities in that no understanding of place value is required, just an ability to visualize shapes in different positions. It is great to see that often the children who struggle with many aspects of mathematics can experience success with this topic. We definitely have some potential future designers or tilers in our class. Our Art lesson this week helped to consolidate our learning in Mathematics as we used reflections, translations, rotations and tessellations to create some colourful images.

In Humanities and Social Sciences, we are about to commence a mini-unit on Australia’s connections with Asia, particularly SE Asia as well as finalisng our work on the rights, responsibilities and obligations of Australian citizenship.

In Technologies, the task is combined with Art and requires the children to design a new child’s toy or modify an existing toy. The children will need to specify what materials and equipment would be needed to make the toy and where it would be important to observe safety standards. A drawing and specific explanations of each step of the process is required, however, the toy doesn’t actually have to be made.

German (LOTE) Mrs Melita Dunn

It has been a case of hit the ground running for me, arriving back in week three.

Most of you are aware that I was given the opportunity to do an intensive language course in Germany at the Goethe Institute. It was an unforgettable experience and far beyond what I could ever have imagined it to be. I feel that I have a complete grounding on the language now, (although it is just the tip of the iceberg) and I will be continuing my studies externally to keep up the learning process. It also required me to be on the ‘other side’ in a classroom (student) which certainly gave me a new appreciation for my teaching practices and the importance of every student making a connection to the language in some way – and keeping learning FUN and interactive.

Welcome to Term 4 Library Links. Mrs Beth Silverwood

It was lovely to return this term to see all the students smiling faces. I seem to be running at double time to catch up…but I am getting there. I cannot thank Ms Francis enough for all the wonderful work she did in the library and with her library classes while I was away. It is difficult to believe we are now in Term 4….the weeks seem to be flying by.

I arrived back to our new student OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue). I have been waiting almost a year for all the ducks to line up and there it was. The Junior School children are embracing the new technology and there is always a line up to look for the books they want. Wanting me to point them in the right direction is just not as much fun. All the classes from Year 2 are using it each week. The students can search for books by title or subject. They are then able to see if the book is available in the library and where they have to go to find it. It has been so popular; a second unit is in the pipeline. This will serve them well as they move into the Secondary School.

We have had a few issues with overdue books. I am aware there were a couple of problems using the library system to check books in and out. Human error (that includes me) is also a factor. However, can I please ask that you help your children look for possible library books that may be hiding at home? I ask the students to please check. My aim is for students to borrow regularly. Books at home or in the classroom, may limit the number of books they can take out.

Thanks for your support over the year. We have had wonderful parents covering books, sending their children with library books and a bag and also some going home for forgotten library books so their children can borrow. Your encouragement with reading will go a long way to helping your students develop their reading skills and reading enjoyment.

JS HPE & SPORT NEWS: Miss Pia Taylor

Term 4, has certainly started with a splash, it is Week 4 already and we are already right in the middle of our competitive swimming season. Well done to all our students who competed at the Inter-House Swimming Carnival last Friday, luckily the weather was on our side. Congratulations to Chad and Page who came away from the day victorious and congratulations to all our Age Champions and Runners-Up. I would also like to say a big thank you to all the parents and Junior School staff who helped with the running of the carnival.

We now look forward to the Inter-School swimming carnival which will be held next Friday, 3 November. The Inter-School swimming team will be announced later this week. Good luck to all of those who are selected.
