Skier Mushtaq finishes 3 rd in semis; finals today Srinagar, Feb 21: On the second day of the International Heli-Ski challenge, organized by Airbus helicopters in col- laboration with Kashmir Heli- Ski, semi-final contests were held at Gulmarg on Friday. In the semis, 30 skiers who had qualified the first round on Thursday partici- pated. Among them 10 made it to the final run which would be held on Saturday. In the semi-finals, Govil- ler Herre of France finished first while Luke John Jack- son of New Zealand finished second. The third place was bagged by Mushtaq Ahmad Magray, a local skier. The event, which is first of its kind, saw around 200 skiers vying for the honours on the inaugural day. Skiers included top international free skiers who are known in the extreme skiing arena. Participants have turned up from countries like, USA, Russia, Australia, New Zea- land, South Africa, Canada as well as India and the host state. Some Olympics-level skiers are also contesting in the event. The skiers were taken to top of Apharwat peak (13500 feet above sea level) in heli- copters from where they were dropped to manoeuvre through to reach the base of the mountain. “I am looking to finish first. Yesterday I got the second place while today I fin- ished third. I want to give it my best in the final run and bring laurels to my state,“Mushtaq Ahmad said. Prof Talat, Farooq Shah unveil National Youth Policy Srinagar, Feb 21: Terming youth as ‘agents of social change’, Vice-Chancellor Kashmir University, Prof Talat Ahmad unveiled the National Youth Policy (NYP- 2014) and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan at Kashmir Univer- sity here on Friday. Prof Talat and Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Er Farooq Ahmad Shah -- who was the chief guest on the occasion -- also flagged-off a rally at KU campus in which scores of NSS volun- teers from various schools and colleges of the valley participated. Prof Talat while speaking at the launching ceremony of National Youth Policy and The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhi- yan, which was organized by NSS KU in collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra Sri- nagar (NYKS), said that India is one of the youngest nations in the world and is expected to have a very favourable demographic profile in the near future which gives us a great opportunity as well as a challenge. He said that experts have opined that by year 2025 India would be the fifth larg- est economy of the world. “To realize this vision of 2015 our youth have to compete and perform at best level in vari- ous spheres of life in addition to their academic achieve- ments”, he said. Speaking on the occa- sion Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Farooq A Shah said that National Youth Policy and The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan have been concep- tualized to empower youth to achieve their full potential, and through them enable the country to find its right- ful place in the community of nations. He said: “These programs have been conceptualized with an aim to develop the sporting talent amongst the youth and I am sure that if our youngsters take full advantage of these schemes our state and country will see many sporting legends in future.” He added that once executed on the ground the scheme would not only strengthen the sports infra- structure in the State but also expand it to the areas which were not having it till date. As per the policy docu- ment, the policy will cover the entire country cater- ing the needs of all youth in the age-group of 15-29 years, which constitutes 27.5 per cent of the popula- tion according to Census- 2011, that is about 33 crore persons. It will replace NYP-2003, to take care of developments since 2003 and future policy imperatives. to have a very favourable demographic profile in the near future which gives us a great opportunity as well as a challenge. He said that experts have opined that by year 2025 India would be the fifth larg-est economy of the world. “To realize this vision of 2015 our youth have to compete and perform at best level in vari-ous spheres of life in addition to their academic achieve-ments”, he said. Speaking on the occa-sion Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Farooq A Shah said that National Youth Policy and The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan have been concep-tualized to empower youth to achieve their full potential, and through them enable the country to find its right-ful place in the community of nations. He said: “These programs have been conceptualized

with an aim to develop the sporting talent amongst the youth and I am sure that if our youngsters take full advantage of these schemes our state and country will see many sporting legends in future.” He added that once executed on the ground the scheme would not only strengthen the sports infra-structure in the State but also expand it to the areas which were not having it till date. As per the policy docu-ment, the policy will cover the entire country cater-ing the needs of all youth in the age-group of 15-29 years, which constitutes 27.5 per cent of the popula-tion according to Census-2011, that is about 33 crore persons.
