TOLoveAND TO

SERVESince 1998, the Ateneo College of Education has been reaping various achievements and awards. In recent years, aside from being designated as Center of Excellence and being named as one of the top performing Teacher Training Institutions in the Philippines, the College has also been producing the best students who top in the Licensure Examination for Teachers and the Licensure Examination for Librarians; and who achieve other prestigious awards such as the Top Ten Outstanding Teachers of the Philippines among others. These achievements are testaments of the college’s reputation and dedication towards achieving excellence and living up to the Ignatian ideal of Magis. Because of these, the College of Education had been contributing much to the history of the Ateneo de Naga University which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

But what drives the college to reach all these achievements? What force pushes the students, teachers and administrators of the college towards new frontiers?

The college takes pride in its high standards and holistic development. “Teaching Minds, Touching Hearts, Transforming Lives” as the famous college tagline goes. This is what has placed the college at the top position of Teacher Training Education in the regional and national scene: high quality instruction and standards; affective evaluation which leads to reflection; and response to the call for social change and social awareness. In effect, the College, together with the university, envisions that its graduates excel, and become agents of social change in their career as teachers with a balanced mind, heart, and body.

However, amidst these achievements and standards, the humanist theme of Love and Service is still ever more predominant. St. Ignatius’s quotation, “In omnibus amare et servire Domino” (in everything to Love and to Serve the Lord) is one of the mantras which drive the Ateneo College of Education towards its goals. It leads the college to create and implement programs and standards that are geared towards the preparation of the students for their future career in the teaching profession where they are envisioned to grow and excel.

The teaching profession, in itself, is a profession of Love and Service. It requires much dedication and much diligence and it feeds the heart with much fulfillment, awe and jubilation. In teaching, the aspects and facets of love, service, and generosity are best exhibited: giving without counting the cost; fighting without heeding the wounds; toiling without seeking for rest; and laboring without asking for reward; as expressed by St. Ignatius of Loyola in his Prayer for Generosity. Truth be told, it is in teaching where love and service are best exemplified; it is in teaching where the actualization of the Jesuit ideals of Love, Service and Magis are realized. More so, it is in these Jesuit ideals that the Ateneo College of Education had built its tradition of excellence and dedication which lead to produce top caliber students who value Excellence, Love, and Service above all things, for God’s greater glory. Students who see to it that in everything, they Love and Serve the Lord.

CoE opens Values Education ProgramAs an answer for the need of

qualified Values Education teachers, the College of Education (CoE) has now offered Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSE) Major in Values Education.

According to Dr. Arnulfo Aaron Reganit, Dean of College of Education, there is a great need for qualified Values Education teachers since teachers who are handling this subject are not really Values Education majors.

BSE Major in Values Education, a 24-unit course with the emphasis on the content, is basically intended for non-Values Education graduates in the private and public schools who are teaching Values Education; however, eventually, it will be offered to undergraduate students.

Nonetheless, due to the inadequate advertisements and late information given last June 2015 by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for the college to proceed offering this new program, there are no students currently enrolled on it yet. It will be tendered officially by the college on summer 2016.

“They should grab this opportunity because we have highly competent faculty and we will cater it according to their needs and availability,” said by Dr. Reganit.(Cedrick Alguzar)

Reganit, Naval, Ama

Dr. Arnulfo Aaron R. Reganit, Dean of the College of Education, and Dr. Ma. Jeanette O. Naval and Mr. Amante Ama, faculty members of the CoE, presented their papers in the Redesigning Pedagogy International Conference held last June 2-4, 2015 at the Nan Yang Technological University, National Institute of Education in Singapore.

The conference, with the theme “Leaders, Values and Citizenship in 21st Century Education”, was held conjointly with two other conferences: Arts, Humanities and Literature Conference 2015 and the 11th International CitizED Conference. These three conferences highlighted the importance of invoking character and values education, sense of imagination, wonder and possibility, and conventional

Grade 10 Private School Teachers prepare with INSET 2015

To prepare for an effective implemen-tation of the K to 12 curriculum, 521 Grade 10 private school teachers from the entire region took part in the three-day In-Service Training (INSET) held last April 29 to May 1, 2015 at the Ateneo de Naga University.

The training was headed by Dr. Arnulfo Aaron R. Reganit, the Pri-vate Education Assistance Committee (PEAC) Regional Program Coordinator.

The teachers were divided according

present papers in Singaporeeducational leadership and practices.

Dr. Naval and Mr. Ama, with Dr. Reganit as their mentor, introduced their papers on the Mainstreamed Environment and Psychosocial Development of Special Children of the SPED Centers in Selected Cities in the Bicol Region and on the Impact of BingOhm on Students’ Achievement in Electric Circuits, respectively.

More than 1000 delegates from different countries attended and participated in the said event. They include researchers, educators, policymakers and practitioners who were given the opportunities to share their researches, impart the best educational practices, and design ways in providing values and citizenship education for students. to their fields of specialization: Filipino, English, Mathematics, Science and Araling Panlipunan. The training focused on the ap-proaches in teaching students of Grade 10, the last year level in the junior high school.

Rhodora Angela Ferrer, the new PEAC Ex-ecutive Director, became the guest of honor for the opening ceremony. Dr. Ramon Fiel Ab-cede, Regional Director of DepEd, and Fr. Primi-tivo Viray Jr., PEAC Regional Program Co-Chair-man, also delivered their message to the private school teachers. (Aileen Ivy Bautista)

The College of Education obtained a 100% Passing Rate in the Librarian Licensure Examination given by the Board of Librarians last April 22 and 23, 2015 in various venues – Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Davao, and Legazpi.

Four out of four takers namely Kay Angeline Broqueza, Reynan Gueriba, Magnolia Mabulo and Katherine Medina passed the said examination. Among the 4 takers, 3 of them took their review in the Ateneo Teachers Training Center during Saturdays. Also, they do some self-study at home.

CoE achieves 100% Passing Rate in 2015 LLEAccording to Mabulo, “ Nakakapressure

dahil konti lang kami, nakakahiya naman kung sakaling konti lang din ang makapasa amin.“ Nevertheless, she mentioned that “the whole experience was full of happiness, kasi gano’n pala ang feeling ng nag-eexam. Mixed emotions talaga – kaba, pressure. Kaba kasi kapag above 50 ang mali namin sa bawat subject, bagsak agad. Lahat ng ito ay bawing-bawi nang makapasa kaming lahat”.(Laine Jen Huang, Sherwin John Mabulo)

Lucky are those who had the chance to meet her and talk to her before. Ms. Imelda N. Sapiera, known by her students as Ma’am Bem, is the living proof that first impressions may not last. Her students often describe her as a strict teacher in the first few min-utes in her class but as she shows her gen-uine smile and starts speaking, everyone unexpectedly feels so comfortable. By sim-ply observing her during PE classes, there is no doubt that she is approachable and orderly – qualities of a good leader which gave her a natural power to be chosen as the new PE Department Head of the Col-lege of Education starting from school year 2015-2016. As she opens a new chapter in her journey as an educator and a leader, she brings with her a lot of life lessons and val-ues to be shared to the whole Ateneo com-munity especially to the future teachers.

Knowing her deeply is a privilege. Talking and listening to her will always be a special moment and an insightful experience. In-terested in sports, news, and antique col-lections, Ma’am Bem graduated with the degree of BSE Social Studies here in our beloved Ateneo de Naga University. She has been teaching for 20 years now. Before she became a teacher, she dreamt of becoming a lawyer but that dream guided her to meet her real passion. She had her first teaching experience at University of Saint Anthony (USANT) in Iriga City where she learned to be time-conscious. After 3 years of teaching in USANT, she went back to her alma mater. “An Atenean will always be an Atenean.” That was her reason during the job interview which proved that she is destined to be in ADNU.

“My greatest achievement was seeing my four sisters graduate and become suc-cessful because of my support and loving effort.” Her statement clearly proves that Ma’am Bem is also family-oriented. Aside from that, she believes that a teacher must be updated and not just limited in the four corners of the classroom. She always makes an effort to know her students and to moni-tor them. She also admitted that she is quite conservative and traditional. Currently, she is till handling Social Studies and PE sub-jects. “Be the best that you can be.” She will never stop telling that to her students be-cause she wants them to show the unique talents they have and make a difference.

Surely, with all the experiences and real-izations she has shared, she is very ready to be a good mother to the PE Department with the goal to teach minds and to touch hearts and lives at all times. (Erika James Roxas)

The Ponong Integrated School students prepared a mass demonstration with flags as a welcoming number. It was followed by the storytelling in every grade level assigned in different rooms. The student facilitators taught specific lessons to students. Values such as table manners and cleanliness were taught to Grades 1-3 and Grades 4-6 learned about respect. For the high school department, the Kadunong publication and PE majors introduced

different skills like folk dance, journalism, arts and sports. Simultaneously, the faculty members of Ponong Integrated School performed a Zumba exercise organized by the PE Department. The outreach activity ended with a feeding activity and the distribution of slippers to the students.

Simultaneously, the Elementary, ECED and SPED Department students together with Fr. Primitivo S. To make their summer vacation productive, Jessica Genotiva (3 AB BSE-English) and John Michael Pastor (2 BSE PE) joined the City Youth Officials (CYO) 2015 of Naga City last May 2015.

Successfully undergoing a rigorous screening process, being part of the CYO was a great experience for them. The screening process has two parts which must the applicants pass in order to qualify. The first part of the process was the qualifying examination conducted last March 29. The aspirants were all Naguenos whose ages are from 15 to 24. The list of the top 45 passers in the examination was released last April 6. It was followed with an interview last April 9 wherein the panelists were the Naga City Councilors. Finally, the result of the interview was announced last April 12. Ms. Genotiva was named as 4th Youth Councilor and Mr. Pastor was assigned to the Nutrition and Population Office.

The City Youth Officials plan and conduct different activities for the youth. On the 1st week of May, there was an opening parade joined by the youth organizations in Naga City. A week after, the theme for the activities was Skills Development and Capacity. They conducted an alternative class program in partnership with Happy Youth Movement of Naga. The 3rd week was Literacy week. They sponsored an educational tour for the youth of Barangay San Isidro. Moreover, a TESDA Career Orientation was held and they presented the courses they are offering. They also conducted a CYO Debate with participants coming from Ateneo de Naga University (Remontados and High School Department), Universidad de Sta. Isabel and University of Nueva Caceres. Outreach activities were also held in different barangays. The last week was Culture & Arts Week wherein they facilitated some activities such as Battle of the Bands, Youth Business Expo and Neonite Run.

Through this once in a lifetime experience, the two Education students were able to enhance their interpersonal and leadership skills. They were introduced to public service and they were trained to be an efficient leader of Naga City in the future. For them, it was an achievement because they were able to do things not just for themselves but most especially for other people.

Truly, the future educators of the Ateneo de Naga University have the heart to serve and explore new things.

timely planning, mobilization, and equita-ble distribution of sufficient resources, de-velopment of human resource, provision of technical assistance and building of strong partnership with stakeholders for increased support and resources. These are for the effective and efficient implementation of sustainable programs, projects and services towards increasing access and enhancing the delivery of quality basic education.

The said division is under the Of-fice of the Schools Division Superinten-dent. Moreover, it is the counterpart of Curriculum Implementation Division.

To prepare for the utilization of the Grade 10 curriculum of the K to 12 Education Program, the College of Education hosted a six-day training for the public school teachers in Math, Science, and MAPEH at the Ateneo de Naga University last May 11-16, 2015.

952 participants were from Camarines Sur, Iriga and Naga.

The training had three objectives. The first one was to give the participants a solid understanding of the basics of the Grade 10 curriculum, lesson plans, assessment, and learning guidelines and competencies. The second was to give them opportunities to obtain and show the required affective and cognitive competencies in the implementation

of the Grade 10 curriculum. Lastly, the training aims to make sure that the teachers have the abilities to be flexible and effective in the execution of the said curriculum.

The training was given by the Department of Education (DepEd) to the CoE because of its distinction as a Center of Excellence and Center for Training through the leadership and guidance of Dr. Arnulfo Aaron Reganit, the Dean of the College of Education.

Tapos siya ng kaniyang Doctor of Philosophy in Philippine Studies major

Isabel, Central Bicol State University of Agriculture, Ateneo de Naga University, University of the Philippines -Diliman, De la Salle-College of St. Benilde, University of the East, San Beda College, De La Salle University, University of Sto.

Santos nga bilang Star for All Seasons, hindi naman magpapatalo si Dr. Vasil A. Victoria bilang Teacher for All Seasons.

“Life gets complicated when the heart gets included.”: this statement may probably be from a teenage girl who is experiencing or has experienced a broken heart because of love. Well, in some instances, this may not really be true. In fact, love is the most powerful thing on earth. It can change our attitude from being sluggish to being enthusiastic. It can give us hope to stand still amidst difficulties. It can make us apprehend what life really means. See, love is the center of life. It is found everywhere even in Ateneo de Naga University, more specifically, in the College of Education. More than love for friends, teachers and loved ones, there is one thing that can be considered as love; it is choosing Education as a career path to take. As a freshman, choosing what course to take is much difficult than choosing what to buy or what kind of movie to watch. This is a matter of building your future – a matter of life and death. With this matter at hand, choosing Education is the best. Like love, choosing this course has many reasons. These reasons surely made them say yes for Education. Also, some reasons cannot be explained further. These can only be felt. Love is passion, so is Education. It makes us love unconditionally. Most students choose Education because they want to teach with zeal and gusto. A strong desire pushed them to take the path of teaching. Love is a dream, so is teaching. Every one of us dreams of having someone watch over us and love us whoever we are. First year Education students definitely dreamt of becoming great teachers. They dream to be efficient and effective teachers in the world – teachers who will inspire and hone the youth. They will do everything to achieve what they want. Love is selfless, so are teachers. Despite the wayward road, we first seek what others need before acknowledging our hearts’ desires. This is a concrete proof that teaching is a selfless vocation. Students who choose Education care about the youth, the future generation and our country. Teachers are true heroes. They may not fly high up in the sky and move fast. They may not have superpowers to save our lives. But, they can save the future by educating the young, freeing them from ignorance, motivating them to do more, and molding them into a better person. Indeed, there is true love in teaching. There is such a thing called ‘forever’ in Education. Do you want to find yours? Now, it is yours to discover.

Entering college is a new milestone. College is no joke. It will test how determined you are to finish your studies. In college, you will face major decisions and you have to really choose wisely. One of these is choosing what course to take.

When I was still a 4th year high school student, my classmates and I were talking about the courses that we would take in college. One said, “I will take Engineering.” “I will take Accountancy,” another said. When I said that I will take Education, one of them said, “Your course is not cool, dude.” I really felt bad when they told me that.

Many Education (Educ) freshies in Ateneo de Naga University (ADNU) are like me, dreaming to become a student of a prestigious university who will strive real hard to turn it into reality. With the help of some scholarship programs, I was able to study in ADNU. During my first days in college, I already felt how students of other colleges degrade the College of Education students. When I met my former schoolmates who are also studying in the University whose courses are not Education, they were shocked. One told me, “Why did you take Education? It’s no practical course to take.” Another followed and said, “That career is too stressful!” After letting them speak, I only said that I am proud to be an Educ student with a smile on my face.

Some people say that I should shift to other courses. But, after reflecting on it, I realized that many people just don’t realize how great taking Education is. Taking education is more of a boon than a bane. It is true that teachers have low income compared to other professions but still, it is a career worth pursuing for.

Engineers, architects, doctors, nurses, and other professionals. Mostly favored professions, right? Well, thanks to the teachers who honed such professionals. Being a teacher is the most honorable profession. Teachers must be proud of themselves for they make professionals. They share the rest of their lives to their students, watching them grow and learn. Another, teachers are the most socially-connected professionals because in a short period of time, they can interact with a great number of people especially students. If you are a teacher, your social life will never be sacrificed for it is already incorporated in your profession.

Nowadays, Educ freshies have different reasons why they chose education as their course. Some of them said that they were forced by their parents or peers. Some said that they chose it because of numerous scholarships it offers. Some really wanted to. Whatever their reasons are, the career they chose is never a bad choice. They must be proud of it.

Taking Education is not a joke. Those who took it may encounter great academic pressure, stress, and numerous challenges but knowing what they can do to the society after finishing the course, the obstacles are as good as nothing.

So, to all Educ freshies like me, congratulations for choosing the “One Top Choice”!

Filipinos have a deep regard for education. Education is highly–valued and highly-esteemed by Filipinos because it is viewed as a “pillar of national development and a primary avenue for social and economic mobility” (“Philippine Education”, n.d)

Consequently, the Department of Education is given the highest budget allocation as prescribed by the 1987 Philippine Constitution. Moreover, the 1987 Constitution guarantees the right to education of every Filipino. Because of Republic Act 9155 or the Governance of Basic Education Act of 2001, every Filipino is guaranteed the right to quality basic education. The Republic Act 6655 or the Free Secondary Education Act likewise guarantees free high school education to all Filipinos.

To cater the Filipino youth the quality education they deserve, the Philippines involves itself in various global commitments that forward reforms and programs towards the improvement of quality education for all.

A quarter century ago, the Philippines, together with stakeholders of Education and other sectors therein, became a delegate to the Education for All (EFA) Movement in Thailand which promoted that Basic Learning Needs be met for all by various means. Hence the 10-year EFA Philippine Plan of Action covering 1991-2000, eventually called EFA 1, was crafted and implemented. Under the EFA 1, programs and projects were aligned with Early Childhood

development and Alternative Learning systems (ALS) programs and Universalization of quality primary education. These goals marked the first decade of the EFA Movement.

Education for All (EFA) 2015 Recently, to reaffirm and reinforce what has been

accomplished in the past 10 years, the Philippines once again committed itself to the EFA 2015. During the World Education Forum in Dakar, in 2000, participating countries, the Philippines included, committed to six goals, which are as follows: Goal 1

Expanding and improving comprehensive early childhood care and education, especially for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children.Goal 2Ensuring that by 2015 all children, particularly girls, children in difficult circumstances and those belonging to ethnic minorities, have access to, and complete, free and compulsory primary education of good quality.Goal 3 Ensuring that the learning needs of all young people and adults are met through equitable access to appropriate learning and life-skills programmes.Goal 4 Achieving a 50 per cent improvement in levels of adult literacy by 2015, especially for women, and equitable access to basic and continuing education for all adults.Goal 5 Eliminating gender disparities in primary and secondary education by 2005, and achieving gender equality in education by 2015, with a focus on ensuring girls’ full and equal access to and achievement in basic education of good quality.Goal 6 Improving all aspects of th e quality of education and ensuring excellence of all so that recognized and measurable learning outcomes are achieved by all, especially in literacy, numeracy and essential life skills.

“Functionally Literate Filipinos, An Educated Nation.” This emphasizes the need to provide basic education for all and to respond to the learning needs of youth and adults who have never been to school, have dropped out, or need basic or advanced skills to aid them in employment. The end goal of EFA 2015 is to provide free access to quality education to all, youth and adults alike.

To achieve these six goals, nine urgent and critical tasks were crafted. These are further subdivided into two: production tasks and enabling tasks. Production tasks pertain to those which are expected to yield the desired educational outcomes; whereas the enabling tasks are those are those essential in sustaining effective implementation of the production tasks. These 9 tasks are enumerated below:

Production Tasks

A. Better Schools: Make every school continuously perform better;

B. Early Childhood Care and Development: Make expansion of coverage yield more EFA benefits;

C. Alternative Learning System: Transform non-formal and informal interventions into an alternative learning system yielding more EFA benefits;

D. Teachers: Promote practice of high quality teaching; E. Longer Cycle: Adopt a 12-year program for formal

basic education - Two more years added, one each for elementary and high school, to the existing 10-year basic education schooling;

F. Accelerate articulation, enrichment and development of the basic education curriculum in the context of the pillars of new functional literacy;

Enabling Task

G. Funding: Provide adequate and stable public funding for country-wide attainment of EFA goals. Adoption of funding framework for basic education that combines the national and local government funding to support the most cost-effective local efforts to attain quality outcomes in every locality across the whole country;

H. Governance: Create a network of community-based groups for local attainment of EFA goals. A knowledge-based movement which reach, engage and organize persons in each locality to form a nationwide network of multi-sectoral groups advocating and supporting attainment of EFA goals in their respective localities; and

I. Monitor progress in efforts towards attainment of EFA goals. Of particular importance is the development and implementation of indicators of “quality education”.(http://planipolis.iiep.unesco.org/upload/Philippines/Philippines_EFA_MDA.pdf)

EFA as 2015 is About to End

EFA 215 is drawing to a close and this year, and a quick glimpse at the present realities in public elementary and high schools and at their performance in National Achievement Tests perfectly give away that the Philippines failed to achieve the EFA 2015 Goals. In a report submitted to UNESCO, the Philippine acknowledged that the pace it took in accomplishing the EFA

goals had been “too slow to make it to target by 2015”Several gaps in the education system were identified by

the Philippine Education For All (EFA) 2015 Review report. Most of these involved enrolment rates, which was observed as deteriorating as years progress.

According to UNESCO, among the countries engaged in the EFA Movement, the Philippines is one where inequality in education persists. Additionally, on site visits to the Philippines, UNESCO concluded that the Philippine Education’s major problems lie on poor school infrastructure and lack of maintenance; only one in three schools was observed to be in good physical condition.

Because of several setbacks, UNESCO encouraged all governments to complete the EFA agenda through pursuing a Post-2015 agenda, having 2030 as the target date of attainment.

This is no longer a novel challenge for the Philippines. This time, can it redeem itself and achieve the 6 goals it has committed itself to, come 2030?

Good morning, Freshies! Please put out your matriculation forms. Your block is indicated there. After determining your block, please approach the assigned facilitator for your block and register your name. Upon receiving your name tags, please wear them at all times when you are inside Ateneo. It will be your temporary ID. After which, please proceed to the University Gymnasium and locate the assigned chairs for your block. Thank you and welcome to Ateneo de Naga University! Enjoy your ORSEM!

***

May 13, 2015, officially enrolled! So, it means that I am already an Atenean. Yeah, I am already considered to be part of the Ateneo community – Ateneans as they call themselves – but I am not yet living an Atenean life. Aside from knowing the Four Pillars and that Ateneo is a Jesuit school, I know nothing else more. With this, I ‘researched’ a bit. As what my older friends said, it is fun to be part of the Ateneo community.

***

May 20–22, 2015. Three days of summer. Three days of my last ORSEM experience. Third time to be part of the facilitators’ pool for ORSEM. Anxiety level 1000, feels like the first time. Hey, partner! Are you studying the module for the ORSEM 2015? We’ve got one week to prepare. Just leave a message if you need anything.

Message sent.

Senior Facee duties first before studying the module. As a Senior Facee, I have to make sure that my co-facilitator is preparing, too, because every ORSEM is

a great experience for the new members of the Ateneo community and as well to us facilitators. I don’t want to shortchange our future students. We’ve been attending trainings and module orientations for this event for some time already, so we must make sure that the event will succeed without a glitch.

Tick tock tick tock tick tock. Time’s running fast. Dug dug dug dug dug dug. Heart’s beating fast. Facee feels all over.

In Faith, forging towards new frontiers.

Hello! Can I see your matriculation form?

Yes, you can. Here it is.

Let’s see. Alright! Please affix your signature beside your name for your registration. Here is your name tag. Please wear it at all times. Please go straight to the University Gymnasium. Upon entering, on your right, you will see a blue placard of your block. Those are the assigned seats for your block. Enjoy!

Have a nice ORSEM! Enjoy, alright? Have as many friends, okay?

Yes, Mom. I will. I must. I hope so. I’ll be going, Mom. It’s already 7 A.M. I’m going to tell you stories when I get home later. Bye, Mom!

Mixed emotions, arrgh! I’m happy that I am already in college but I’m sad that I am not with my friends anymore. All of my friends took other courses. I feel alone, awkward, shy, alien. though, I am excited of what awaits me in my college life, Well, let’s just get it on.

Hey! Where are you, guys? I’m already going to Ateneo. See you by the gate. Message sent to all friends.

***

Good Morning! So, this is your assigned classroom. Later, when you come back at 1 P.M., please go directly to this classroom. You may bring your snacks, if you want to. Are there questions?

None.

Alright! See you later. We’re very excited to meet all of you!

Kahusayan at kagalingan ay katangiang tatak EDUC! Oh Educ, you’re teaching our minds, you’re touching our hearts, you transform lives. Ooh yeah yeah, ooh Educ yeaah! WE ARE BOLD! Forging towards new frontiers! We’ve got the power to win. We’re indestructible! Always believing. WE ARE BOLD!

The long wait is over! Drum rolls, please. This year’s ORSEM Champions, who will receive the St. Ignatius of Loyola Cup, the 7-peat ORSEM Champions, now 8-peat, College of Education!

*** Hello, Educ facees! First of all, congratulations to all of us. Personally, I had the best three days of my summer with you, guys. Second, I want to thank all of you for all your effort. Thank you for all the late night meetings we had just to finish all the cheers and props we need for the presentation; for maintaining peace and order in each assigned blocks giving us three bonus

trophies and a medal. I had so much fun working with all of you!

Thank you for being part of my facee experience - of my college life.

***

Mom, I’m home!

So, how’s your whole ORSEM experience?

Well, I was culture-shocked, that’s for sure. First, we practiced the Mass songs before the Mass started. I have never experienced that one. Second, they have the best stage design I have ever seen. It was really cool, Mom. Third, their ORSEM is not the usual talks from very important offices and persons. It incorporated reflection and sharing sessions and self-awareness and goal setting modules. Very helpful, indeed! Fourth, ORSEM is a big deal! It’s a competition between colleges, Mom! Last, Ateneo has a lot of activities and programs for us, Mom. Outreach programs, sports programs, and many more. What I love the most is their formation programs. Exciting!

But, most of all, I enjoyed my first days as Atenean. I felt how much they want us to be part of the Ateneo community. They welcomed us very warmly. I am very excited for the first day of class, Mom!

I hope that you were inspired to do well in everything you will do. I hope that you are already ready to forge toward new frontiers, to take on greater heights.

I’m more than ready, Mom. Thanks to those three days of my summer.

How long have you been staying in Ateneo? In the College of Education? Is it 1, 2, 3, 4 or more years? Well, the years of stay might probably vary. How much do you know about the story of our college? Well, most of you, readers, might probably answer with “diit lang”, “kadakol man” or some will probably just shrug their shoulders.

So, for you to be more informed about our college, just sit back, relax, and enjoy (hopefully) reading the following paragraphs about the history of our college—the College of Education Through the Years.

Beginnings. Through Government Recognition No. 399 s. 1948, the Education Department under the College of Liberal Arts (currently College of Humanities and Social Sciences) was given the permission to offer Curriculum I of Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (BSE), marking the beginning of the Education Department in Ateneo de Naga. In 1954, Bachelor of Elementary Education was finally offered through another government recognition allowing the department to offer Curriculum II of BSE. Two years after, Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education was also offered.

In 1960s until 1970s, 2 other courses were also offered by the department, namely: Bachelor of Science-Bachelor of Secondary Education (BS BSE) and Bachelor of Arts-Bachelor of Secondary Education (AB BSE). Also, the department was led by Ms. Milagros Z. Reyes. In 1971, Young Educators of Ateneo de Naga (YEAN), the first organization of Education students was formed. The organization operated until 1974.

Downfall. Although low in number, the Education Department produced top performing students on its early years. However, this quantity issue as well as some financial problems greatly affected the department in 1974, resulting to the closure of the department on the same year.

Jumping Back.6 years after its closure, Bachelor of Science in Education was re-offered. In 1981, Education programs together with Liberal Arts and Commerce programs was granted Level I accreditation status by PAASCU. A year after, the Ateneo Guild of Education Students (AGES) was formed (now known as the Samahang Tagapagtaguyod ng Edukasyong Pilipino or STEP), the second student organization of Education students. In addition, Ms. Maria P. Almonte was designated as the Chairperson of the Social Sciences and Education Department in 1932 until 1984.

Though the department had suffered from closure, in 1984-1985, it bounced back as the number of enrollees increased because of the COCOFED scholarship. Mr. Ireneo P. Llana took over the post as the Chairperson of the Education Department. In 1985, the department was given a Level II accreditation status by PAASCU, and Mrs. Lydia T. Goingo assumed the post until 1986. It was during her term that the department achieved not just growth in quantity but also in quality. She initiated the Group Growth Activity to address the low self-esteem among the students. Facilitator’s Guild and Leadership Training Seminar-Workshop were also conducted during her term. In 1988, Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) was awarded to the department through Government Permit 008, s. 1988. Moreover, in response to the need of Bikol for quality education through formation and continuing professional education of teachers, the Ateneo Teacher Training Center (ATTC) was created in 1989 with Mrs. Goingo as the founding Director.

In the first semester of A/Y 1990-1991, the population of the Education Department rises by 411%. Along with this, KADUNONG, the official publication of Education Department, was also established. A year after, Education Department was given a Level II re-accreditation status by PAASCU. In 1993, Dr. Victoria Enojado became the Chairperson of the department. On the same year, Ms. Ma.Gracia Dorotea Nobleza bagged the 3rd place in the Professional Board Examination for Teachers (PBET). This was followed in 1996 by Ms. Cynthia Borromeo when she took the 7th place on the said exam.

A year after Mr. Enojado’ leadership, Education Department became under the leadership of Mr. Arnulfo Aaron R. Reganit. In 1995, Ateneo Teacher Training Center (ATTC), under the directorship of Mr. Ronaldo SP. Elicay, was accredited as Continuing Professional Education Provider by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) as per PRC Resolution Number 381, s. 1995

Separation from CAS. Because of its growing population as well as to improve its quality of education when it comes to teacher training and development, Education Department separated from the College of Arts and Science (CAS) on August 25, 1997 and became an independent college. College of Education became the 4th college in Ateneo de Naga along with College of Commerce, College of Information Technology and Engineering, and College of Arts and Sciences.

College of Education. After its separation from CAS, Dr. Arnulfo Aaron Reganit was appointed as the very first Dean of the College of Education (CoE), and Mrs. Ma. Luz T. Badiola was the first Chairperson of the Education Department. A year after its separation from CAS, CoE was granted Level III Accreditation by PAASCU. Furthermore, the college continued to excel in the Professional Board Exam for Teachers in the entire country as it produced its 3rd topnotcher and first 1st placer, Mr. Levi Francisco. This was followed by Mr. Bernardo R. Marquez when he ranked 2nd in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) in 1999. On the same year, Early Childhood Education was offered as one of the areas of specialization for BEEd.

In 2001, the College of Education was designated by

the Professional Regulation Commission and Commission on Higher Education as one of the top performing teacher training institutions in the Licensure Examination for Teachers in the entire Philippines. The Filipino cluster was created on the same year with Mrs. Delia E. Volante as the first Program Director.

CoE graduates continued to perform well in the LET as Ms. Ma. Victoria C. Bernido placed 2nd in 2002; then followed by Mr. Daves Tonga when he ranked 3rd in 2003. Level III re-accreditation status was also granted by PAASCU in 2003.

In 2005, CoE offered the following innovative courses: Bachelor of Library Information Science (BLIS), double degree programs (BS-BSE and AB-BSE), and Bachelor of Science in Special Education (BS SPEd). Two years after, Ms. Julie Lucille H. Del Valle was chosen as one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP); and, CoE graduates dominated the regional top ten placers in the LET. In 2008, several achievements of the college were made, namely: College of Education was designated as Center of Excellence in Teacher Education by the Commission on Higher Education; Ms. Estefani S. Vargas earned the 7th place in the LET; Ms. Ira Sheena C. Howard was named as one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines; and, Ateneo Teacher Training Center was accredited by the Commission on Higher Education as Review Center for Teacher Education Program with Permit No. 032, s. 2008.

The SPEd and Elementary Education Cluster was also created with Mrs. Jeanette Naval as the first Program Director in 2009. On the same year, Ms. Diana Aborde became one of the regional qualifiers in the search for Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines.

In 2010, Ms. Imelda Rojas Brazal obtained the 5th place in the Licensure Examination for Librarians. This only shows that CoE graduates do not only excel in the Licensure Examination for Teachers, but also in the Licensure

Examination for Librarians. On the same year, Ms. Marianne Ayo-Permale was appointed as the Program Director of SPED/ECED Cluster. Then in 2011, Ms. Marielle Brutas graduated Summa Cum Laude. This was followed by Ms. Cienna Jaucian when she graduated Summa Cum Laude and the Class Valedictorian in 2012.

In 2013, several milestones of the college were also made. First, the College of Education was divided into two departments, namely Secondary Education Department under Ms. Julie Lucille H. Del Valle, and Elementary Education Department under Ms. Marianne Ayo-Permale. Second, the College of Education was named as one of the Best Schools for Teacher Education by Philippine Business for Education (PBEd). Third, the Physical Education Department of College of Arts and Sciences joined the College of Education. Fourth, Mrs. Ma. Luz T. Badiola was assigned as the new Chairperson of Secondary Education Department as Ma’am Julie pursued her postgraduate studies abroad. Lastly, Mr. Lyndon Amaza placed 9th in the Licensure Examination for Librarians.

After a year, there were again several momentous events for the college. First, CoE was given Level III re-accreditation statusby PAASCU. Second, the college became the partner of DepEd as a provider of trainers in the mass training of teachers for Grade 9 in Math, Science, and MAPEH. Third, CoE produced three national placers in August 2014 LET for the first time, namely: Ms. Tessa Nickaela SF. Noora, 9th place for the Secondary Level; and Ms. Jeera Delos Angeles, 6th place, and Ms. Gellie Ann Lomaad, 10th place for the Elementary Level. Lastly, Ms. Anna Bella F. Abellera was named as one of the Ten Outstanding Teachers of the Philippines by the Metrobank Foundation.

EDUC in the future. The College of Education will be celebrating its 18th anniversary as an independent college on August 25, 2015. As it celebrates its 18th anniversary, our beloved dean, Dr. Arnulfo Aaron Reganit, gave his visions for the college’s future. The Dean sees the College to be a

college of distinction—to have an identity being the best teacher training institution, nationally and internationally. He also wishes to see the college to have partnerships with other teacher training institutions outside the country. Dr. Reganit also hopes for the college to develop a culture of research which includes the collaboration of the faculty and students in order to contribute something new in the present pedagogies. Above all this, he wants us Education students to develop a love for teaching, to deepen our commitment to the college and to serve the schools that are most in need of teachers.

As education students, we should develop the love for learning and teaching. We should be able to love what we do in order for us to give more to our future students. Whenever you feel like giving up this course, always remember why you decided to be in it in the first place. Our Dean once said, “We have to lead and not to be led. We have to guide not to be guided.”

Hey you! Yes, you! Would you like to help lead our college to even greater victories? It’s up to you to decide.

SULOG(Sumaro sa Salog)

“We all have a river experience; we once swam, fished, prayed and played by its banks; maybe even got over with certain rites of passage near its cool and seemingly perpetual waters. It had always been there for us waiting, anticipating, watching even when it started weeping and dying. Today, the river needs our help and the best part is there is a multitude of ways for us to extend our aid.

A group of artists in Naga started a project called Sulog – Sumaro sa Salog – an effort to raise awareness for the rehabilitation of the Naga River through the literature and the arts.

This section is Kadunong’s attempt to respond to the call of the river to be saved - the river which had always been there for us through thick and thin.”

I rest my pen on the table. I made so many erasures already, so many crumpled drafts of the piece I will to make. I push away my things. My hands clasp my head. I feel so frustrated at myself. Maybe I’m being too hard on myself. I have to go somewhere, somewhere far away from here. I hear the booming of music from my brother’s playlist, the whamming of the hammer my uncle is using, the shrieking of children playing outside. All of them, a distorted melody. It’s too chaotic. I have to go somewhere, somewhere far away from here.

I choose to be at the highlands. I see tall, green trees. I smell dirt, moist on the ground. I see the clear, blue sky. I feel the cool air brush my face, and I close my eyes to savour its sweet caress. Then I hear a faint sound of rushing.

Rushing of water, that is. It is a river, as I have seen on my way down to follow its inviting hum. I see dancing crystals on its body, with the sun and I watching. Amidst the dancing crystals I see the reflection of the trees and the blue sky. Indeed, this is a breathtaking sight. I suddenly feel a rush of youth inside me, a rush so invigorating that I have brought myself to run along the banks of the river and beat the racing of its current. I let out a laugh, I am a free spirit. This is wonderful! I am bound to nothing. I lose myself as I run, I let the current decide. I let myself out from being decisive, I am a free spirit after all, yes?

No. No! I lose control of myself. I am running way too fast. Too fast that I lose balance and stumble into my own stupidity. What did I bring myself into? I struggle to catch my breath. My breath. Wheezing. Gasping. Choking. My eyes want to well up, but I bring myself not to. The current overwhelmed me, how come I feel so betrayed?

A River’s SoliloquyTrisha Marie Rubio

I look at the river beside me. There is an assortment of rocks: small, medium, and large. Where have the dancing crystals gone? Now there is foam - foam everywhere. Foam sliding in between rocks, foam sliding underneath. Am I still invited to hear the hum of this river? I no longer feel welcomed, the river is roaring at me. I stand up weakly and brush myself clean. I do not want to stay here.

I think walking is better. Why am I so hard on myself? Maybe I should stop thinking that this is a race. Whether it’s a race or a walk, there will always be obstacles, right? If I race, I might not have the time to think of a way how I can dodge these obstacles. I might go too fast and lose myself, just like the way I went too fast and lost myself just awhile ago. But if I walk, I will get to have a glimpse of my obstacles, and I grant myself the time to think and get through them. Yes, walking is better. I think clearer in it. I take leisure in it. I take pleasure in it. Yet, I can still feel the rush of youth inside me.

I look at my legs, and I see that I have cut myself from running. It’s alright. I look at the river again. The dancing crystals are back, but the current is calmer this time. Much calmer. I smile and let my feet take me to the water. I can see my bare feet clearly. I cleanse myself of the blood on my knees. It stings, but the water is cool, and it trickles down playfully, back to its greater self. Beyond the image of my feet submerged in this beautiful river, I see myself staring back at me. My reflection. I smile, because I know that this river and I are just the same.

At arm’s length, I finally admire this finished piece I have willed to make. I gather my things and clean up. My hands clap above my head. It feels good to believe in oneself! The music is gone, the pounding is gone, the children are asleep. I will not race, I choose to walk. I am going towards somewhere, somewhere greater than here.

Narito alamin natin.BABALA: The views and the opinions of the host (or in this case writer, ako yun) do not necessarily state or reflect those of the company and its management. Ibig sabihin katuwaan at kunya-kunyarian lang to (parang siya sabi niya kunyaring kami daw hahaha). Wag kayong KJ katuwaan lang to. Babu.

Lucky Letter: A B C D ElementaryLucky Color: Primary colorsLucky Number: 1-10

Tandaan, haggardness is next to ugliness.

Lucky fruit: Apple Lucky color: Wala.

Good luck sainyo!

Lucky number at Lucky Color: WALA! AS IN WALA! HAHAHALucky Singer: Basil Valdez (charot!)

Past tense. The end sa short story. Mag-aral ka nalang ng subject-verb agreement.

Lucky?

Lucky song: Mr. Right by Kim Chiu

Lucky number: any real number (yeeeeeeeeah hahahaha)

PHYSICAL EDUCATIONUnti-unting mararating, kalangitan at bituin. Unti-unting kinabukasan mo’y magniningning. Sige, kanta ka lang.

Lucky dance: Voya

Lucky number: 3 dahil three floors ang library

"Hindi hawak ng mga bituin ang ating kapalaran. Gabay lamang sila. Meron tayong free will, (TAMAD KA LANG CHOS) gamitin natin ito."Unahin ang LP para sa huli, ay di magsisi. – Daragang Magayunununununununun!
