Hello everyone, A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to a wonderful start to Term 3. It has been brilliant to see so many happy faces around the playground and importantly, everyone jump- ing straight back into their learning straight away. As mentioned on parade I am continually impressed by the standards our students set around the school. It is great to have such a warm, welcoming and well-mannered student group. We have seen tremendous growth in our school with students starting at the end of last term, 11 students starting last week and a further 4 students starting next week. The fact we are growing so quickly is a testament to the brilliant school that we are! We look forward to welcoming all of these students to the Kalbar community. Please see below for other important messages that will take us to the end of week 4. Sports Day Please see attached the program for our Athletics carnival held next week on Wednesday morning and all-day Friday. Please note that these times are approximate only. At this stage we welcome parents back for this year’s carnival and will advise of COVID precautions we may have in place early next week. Food for students will need to be pre-ordered through the tuckshop for students only as their will be no canteen in operation. Stalls will also be run next week by our wonderful P and C, where colourful items will be sold for sports day. Please keep an eye on Facebook for more information. Gold coin donations on the Friday will also allow students to have their hair spray painted in their team colours. Please contact the office prior to the carnival if your children cannot get their hair sprayed. District Sports Days If students are successful in placing and obtaining relevant qualifying heights/distances they will be invited to district sports days to be held at Walloon SS on August 5 and 6. You will be notified early week 4 if your child has been successful and all relevant paperwork/programs will be sent home. Please note that Kalbar SS staff will be at the district carnivals in an official capacity only. Parents/guardians will be responsible for transporting and supervising their children during the district carnival. Road Safety At school we are continually discussing road safety with the students to ensure those that scooter, ride, walk get to and from school safely. Please take the time to reinforce these messages at home with your children. We have a several reports of ‘close calls’ in the afternoons and if we work together I am sure we can continue to keep our kids safe on their travels. Cops in Kilts A big thank you to Mr Piper for organising a visit from Cops in Kilts at Kalbar this week. Everyone was thoroughly impressed and entertained by their performance. We look forward to seeing if we can get a return visit next year! School House Destruction The school house is once again due for demolition in the coming weeks. Please be mindful there could be machinery in action along your travels. We will ensure all safety measures are in place to keep our students safe during this process. Thank you all again, please let me know if you have any questions, queries or concerns. My door is always open. Have a great weekend. NAIDOC WEEK

ART PREP S We also loved listening

Djinda Djainda Ka-

nangoo (Twinkle

Twinkle Little Star).

Welcome back after the break! It is lovely to see all the Prep/1 students refreshed and eager for another term of learning. This term we are preparing for our Underwater Kingdom Day so you may see our classroom slowly trans-forming as we create decorations. In English, we are learning about poetry and have been identifying rhym-ing words in stories and poems. We have been enjoying finding ocean-based rhymes that go with our theme.

The Preps have been exploring the days of the week during maths and have been learning to recognise and sort them into the correct order. The Year 1’s have been learning to tell the time on clocks with a focus on ‘o’clock’ and ‘half past’ times. This term, we have a focus on geography in HASS. Students will be learning to read and create simple maps of familiar places. We had a look at different types of maps and found out that maps can be of a house, a school, the weather and even the world! Students were very excited to find Kalbar on a map of Queensland. We are looking forward to continuing our exploration of different maps throughout the term. Have a wonderful week!

Year 2

Cops in Kilts

By Year 4B

On Wednesday morning our school went to the hall for the Cops in Kilts performance. Five cops wearing kilts

played bagpipes and there were quite a few drums including snare drums and a base drum. Another cop in a kilt

played bass guitar. The kilts were red, white and black.

They played ‘Bob the Builder’ and we had to sing. Some students played tambourines and shakers for this song.

They also played ‘We are Australian’ and Ian played the digeridoo.

Lucas loved the bagpipes best. Abby, Summer and Shae agree and liked the didgeridoo as well. Kobi and Hayden

loved the drums the most.

It was very loud but an amazing performance.

Year 3B Excursion to Planetarium and Ipswich Animal Park

Year 4W

Mystery Goo This week we investigated a mystery

substance. We used scientific words to

describe its characteristics.

In maths we have been learning

about symmetry. Flips, Slides

and Turns.

This term the year 5/6 class have started looking into their English unit about advertising.

They have watched some ads, even though most of them just skip the ads when they

watch anything now. We have been looking at what persuasive effects are used in each

ad. They also created their own t-shirt to promote a product

using a logo and a slogan. The students are working towards

creating their own

advertisements

promoting a service.

This term in Digital Technology we are working with the Prep, Prep/1, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 2/3 classes. We have met our new friends Max and Mia and

they have some problems they need us to help them with!

We are going to be working with Lego Robotics to help solve simple problems. Our task this term is to build robots using the Lego and program those robots to

move using the iPads.

Visual Art Mrs Zorzetto Year 5 and 5/6: In Term 3, the Year 5s and 5/6s are very excited to be working with clay. The last two weeks has seen us explore the concept of a spirit or totem animal. After deciding on their own, the students then sketched their animal, and made notes regarding the animal’s personality traits, their habitat and environment. We also looked at how animals have been sculpturally represented through the art of ancient and indigenous cultures. Responding to and discussing the artwork of others is such an important skill in visual art. After two weeks of preparatory work, we can’t wait to begin our animal sculpture next week! Year 3/4 and 4: The 3/4s and 4s have been busy preparing to start their A3 mixed-media artwork, which will depict patterns and surfaces from their own surroundings. We firstly looked at contemporary Aboriginal artists that paint patterns and symbols to portray the landscape. The students have also been introduced to the 7 elements of art, beginning with texture and line, and how these elements are portrayed in artworks. We’ve also been exploring the surface-rubbing technique called ‘frottage.’ The students are very keen to begin their own surface-rubbing pictures in the KSS schoolgrounds next week! Year 2 and 2/3: In Term 3, Year 2 and 2/3 students will be creating an A3 mixed-media artwork illustrating weather and feelings. We began by studying how other artists depict the weather, and create a mood or feeling at the same time. Students had to respond to questions like “How does this image make you feel?” and “What is in the image that makes you feel that way?” The students did a great job with this responding task. The students loved discovering each of the 7 elements of art and are excited to incorporate them into their own creations. We can’t wait to start creating next week!

Science Mrs Cowan

This Term in Science the lower school is focusing on Chemical Sciences and looking the properties of different mate-rials. We will be experimenting with different materials and discovering what they can be used for. Prep In Prep, we are exploring what come common materials around the classroom and home are, such as metal, wood, paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and fabrics. We learned about scientific words that describe those materials and ex-amined the properties of paper. We discovered that paper is smooth, weak and flexible. Next week we will be looking at the properties of wood. Year 1 In Year 1, we are exploring how we can change materials. We reviewed common materials and their properties. We then examined paper and how we could do things to paper to change it, like folding it and getting it wet. We discover that folding paper many times can make it stronger but that getting it wet makes it fall apart and become soft and inflexible. Next week will be examining wood and how people can change the properties of wood. Year 2 In Year 2, we are looking at how we can combine materials for different purposes. We learned about which materials are water absorbent and which were resistant by experimenting with them and seeing what happened when they were submerged in water. We found that that paper and fabric were water absorbent and metal and wood were water resistant. Year 3 (from Year 2/3) In Year 3, we will be looking at solids and liquids and how heat impacts on the state of various materials. Later in the term we will be experimenting with heat and how it can change the state of different materials.

Hello from the Guidance Officer Zoe West

Welcome back to school and to term three. The whole school culture here at Kalbar State School is incredibly positive

and supportive, but we are continuing to improve it by instilling our key beliefs into our classrooms every single day.

At Kalbar, our children are encouraged to be their best and to achieve this by being provided quality educational

opportunities, while supporting their social and emotional wellbeing. One of our current focus areas is ‘what a good

friend looks like’ and ‘how can I be a good friend’. Continuing these conversations at home with your children will be

very beneficial to their understanding.

Please remember that my office is located in the admin building, and I am at Kalbar SS on a Thursday and Friday every week, if you ever have any concerns. I can also be contacted via email on [email protected].
