In May, the Arts Center had on display artwork from the 6th grade art classes of teacher Simone Johnson of Rochelle

Middle School. (Simone was CCA’s summer intern in 2018.) The artwork is the product of classes with visiting artist Corey Pemberton

of Penland School of Crafts. Also displayed in May was artwork by South Lenoir High School Art Students, from the art class taught by

Laura Jackson; AND by Kinston High School Advanced Art Students and International Baccalaureate Program Artists, instructed by

teacher Prishonda Daniels. We celebrate the work of these young artists and share our appreciation to the programs and instructors

for their leadership and support.

ROCHELLE MIDDLE SCHOOL

To know me — To know me is to love me. This sentiment may seem cliché, but it feels like an important thing to consider in this

day and age. We’ve all felt, at one point or another, that if someone really got to know us, they’d grow to love us...or at least understand why we are the way we are. It’s so rare in our society today for people to invest the time and curiosity that it takes to truly get to know someone. In a city that grapples with segregation, one can be especially quick to draw conclusions about people whom

they know nothing about.

On display is a selection of works by the 6th graders at Rochelle Middle School who are all complex human beings with stories to tell that are both happy and sad. If you already know these young artists, let this moment serve as a celebration of their creativity. And, if you don’t know them yet, let this exhibition serve as an introduction to your neighbors and to the future leaders and members of your

Kinston community.

ARTS IN EDUCATION RESIDENCY AT ROCHELLE MIDDLE SCHOOL — Again this year, the Community Council for the

Arts (CCA) is sponsoring an artist residency at Rochelle Middle School. This exciting and engaging project has received funding

support to the Community Council for the Arts from the North Carolina Arts Council (NCAC), a State agency, through

the Arts in Education Grant Program.

The CCA has supported Rochelle Middle School consistently for numerous years in their efforts to be

designated an A+ School. A+ Schools were developed through a joint initiative of the Kenan Institute

and UNC-Greensboro approximately 25 years ago. Its basic premise is to integrate the arts across

the core curriculum. Students participating in A+ School programs have a lower drop out rate,

achieve higher SAT/ACT scores than their peers in non A+ programs, and appear to exhibit better

social skills in their student community where they tend to be more engaged in school activities.

This project is the 11th two-week residency presented by the Community Council for the Arts at

Rochelle Middle School, all receiving funding from the NCAC for support. All residencies have been

two weeks, and include a teacher workshop, consistent with the NC Education Standards, and have

employed professional, renowned teaching artists. Through the 11 years CCA has sponsored this

program, Lenoir County students have been exposed to many prominent, nationally known, and award

winning artists including playwright and actor Mike Wiley; poet Glenis Redmond, Flamingo dancer

Carlotta Santana, sculptor Jane Horner, jazz musician John Brown, and The Monitors

education component featuring Dick Knight.

This year’s program was led by Wilmington, North Carolina, artist

September Kreuger, a Teaching Fellow with the A+ Program. Along with

being a textile artist who creates quilts, woodcuts, and silk paintings,

September heads the Art Department at Southeastern Community College

in Whiteville, and teaches workshops at the Cameron Museum in

Wilmington.

Rochelle Middle School has completed its second week of September Kreuger’s visual arts

residency; her first week was in late December. The project designed during this year’s residency

is a mixed media art piece, consisting of two cloth banners of 8’ in length. As completed,

each banner will be installed at either side of the auditorium stage at Rochelle Middle School. Students from

the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade art classes participated, totaling approximately 170 students. For this project, the

students were introduced to symbols from African American countries interpreting into words such as love,

selflessness, loyalty, etc. During the week in December, the students created linoleum wood cut blocks of these

words. Additionally, the students studied the work of renowned artist Kehindle Wiley, who painted the official

White House portrait of President Barack Obama.

In February, as part of this program, several students traveled to the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh for a docent-lead tour of

the African American exhibit currently on display. During the work in May, the students stamped with paint the woodcuts into a

colorful array of pre-painted blocks in order to provide the background for the self portraits which will be arrayed on the colorful

background. This replaces the method used by artist Wiley in his very realistic portraitures. Photographs were taken of the student

artists and will be recreated from fabrics which will then be affixed to the banners.

The Community Council for the Arts is committed to providing and promoting numerous educational opportunities like the Artist in

Residency Program for A+ Schools, annual art exhibits, and concerts like those presented by the North Carolina Symphony. Through

grant funding, private donations, annual fundraising events, and public partnerships with the Arts Center, these essential artistic

programs are made possible in our schools.

Satellite Galleries for Artists — If you have interest in participating in our Satellite Gallery shows in locales around Kinston, please call

artwork occurs every other month at Queen Street Deli. The featured artist is randomly drawn from the pool of interested artists.

Currently, this is restricted to 2-D visual art, which needs to be suitable for display with approximately a 10-piece body of work. There

are weight restrictions in place as displays are on tracks.

ARTIST OPPORTUNITIES

The next Illusions, Open Mic Night, will be June 15. Join us for an evening filled with poetry, singing and

some jazz. All are invited to attend this laid back show held at the Arts Center. Doors open at 8:00 p.m.

and the show runs from 8:30 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. The show is $10 and there is a fee of $8 for Open Mic

talent. See you at the next Open Mic Night!

Kinston Jazz TAPS group (Traditional Arts Program for Stu-

dents) — TAPS will return in the Fall at the Arts Center. TAPS is the

only after-school Jazz mentorship program in North Carolina and is

for middle school, high school and early college students. Call

The Lenoir County Artist League (LCAL) meets at the Arts Center on the first Tuesday of the month, September

through May. There is a small annual membership fee to join. The League is open to all local artists working in

two-dimensional and three-dimensional media in all genres. The LCAL has an annual juried exhibition at the Arts

Center, which runs from November to January. The goal as a group is to promote educational programming and a

The Downeast Woodturners Association is an active group for craftsmen, artist and novices sharing and

increasing their knowledge of turning objects on a lathe. The group meets the second Tuesday of each month at

7:00 p.m. at the Community Council for the Arts, 400 North Queen Street in Kinston. They offer demonstrations on

Queen Street. Raney has been offering painting workshops at the Arts Center for several months, has

her artwork in the Galleria Gift Shop, and has entered several exhibitions at the Arts Center, many

prior to moving to Kinston. Classes with Raney are packed with laughter and great fellowship and are

a fun-filled and stress-relieving way to allow your creativity to flow, whether you have experience

painting or not. All classes are $35 per person and include all materials to paint your very own take

home masterpiece! Participants are invited to bring wine and treats if desired. The party sessions are
