The Kansas City MG Car Club is a chapter of the North American MGA Register (NAMGAR). The Register was established in 1975, with the sole objective of promoting the restoration, preservation, and enjoyment of the MGA, Magnette, and their Variants. While NAMGAR started as a register of MGA’s in North America, it soon became an organization to join, as evidenced from a membership roster of folks from all over the world! It immediately became the catalyst for very special social gatherings. NAMGAR is managed by unpaid volunteer Board and Staff members. They give their expertise and time freely in an effort to make NAMGAR the best MG club in the world.: Cost of membership in the NAMGAR is $37.50 North America/$52.50 International per year and unique dash plaque indicating your car’s Register number, NAMGAR’s award winning magazine, MGA!, six times a year and other benefits.

Brits in the Ozarks, September 6-7 By Rick Mills
We had a wonderful trip down on Friday, September 6th with perfect weather the whole weekend;
maybe a bit warm in Arkansas. Our troop that went with us: Denny & Ruth Hale in their MGB,
Larry Taylor in his Triumph TR3, Dean & Kim Wheeler in their MGA, Dave Dobbins in his MGB/
GT, Chris Armacost in his MGA, Tom Berry in his MGA, Steve Dupus & Mary Beth Ricci in their
Morris Minor Pickup, John Styers in his Classic Mini, Ron & Susan Ray in their Austin Healey
3000, and Rick & Monica Mills in their MGB/GT — all 10 of us caravanned down together with
Monica and me leading the pack — and with our clutch throw-out bearing going out!!
We made a lunch stop at the Cave Bar & Grille in Lanagan, MO on Hwy. 59. A group of goats greeted us as we drove in & hungry for treats! A unique atmosphere dining inside an actual cave.
Almost 200 cars were present.
As usual, lots of MGBs —
chrome and rubber bumpers
and a good showing of MGAs,
Triumphs, MG TDs, etc.

Photo Scavenger Hunt #7 (By Bruce Miller)
Photo Scavenger Hunt #7, September 14th — What a GORGEOUS Morning for an LBC drive!
Nine cars (3 MGs, 4 Triumphs, 2 SUVs) cruised “The Route” which included back roads from
Independence through Blue Springs, Grain Valley, Oak Grove, Buckner, and back to “A Little BBQ
Joint” in Independence while capturing photos of designated items from a Scavenger List.
Everyone found their way using Abbreviated Directions, and every item on “The List” was found by
at least one team. The total points competition was extremely close with the top four teams all
within six points of each other. Top Honors go to Rob and Tommie Camblin in their MG TC and
“The Lynn Team” SUV with four family members in a tie for 1st place. Extra eyes on board proved
to be a great advantage in managing navigation and spotting list items. Second place — Dave
Dobbins and Susan Hays in their ‘80 MGB LE, Third place -– Greg and DeAnn Schoenhals in their
TR3A. Super Run, Great Friends, Good food, and consensus approval of the hot potato salad at
ALBBQJ!

Colorado English Motoring Conclave
September 15th
The Colorado English Motoring Conclave is THE premier all British meet west of the Mississippi! Since 1984, the Colorado British Car and Motorcycle clubs have joined up to present this fun weekend for British motoring fans.
For 2019, the Conclave took place on Saturday and Sunday, September 14
th and 15
th with the tour on the 14
th and the Conclave Car Show the
15th. The location was once again Oak Park, 64
th Place and Oak Street,
Arvada, Colorado. Each year they celebrate the gathering of over 500 English vehicles (cars, motorcycles, and 4WDs) and they are the largest celebration of the British Motoring Hobby in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States
This year, Steve and Carol Olson took their Triumph TR8, Roger Elliott and Pat Fischer took their Triumph 250, and Cecil Wise took his Triumph TR6. Steve and Carol took 1
st Place and Roger
and Pat took 2nd
Place.
Steve Olson said, “Great car show and wish more from here would have attended. I took a first and Pat and Roger took a second. Cecil didn't win an award for some reason. Hundreds of cars and many that we don't often see. There were even around two dozen motorcycles. So far, the web site has not been updated to show this year's winners but I am sure it will be eventually.” http://www.thecoloradoconclave.com

Colorado English Motoring Conclave Part II By Roger Elliott
This year, instead of going to the Brits in the Ozarks show, we decided to go to the Colorado Conclave in Arvada, Colorado, just west of Denver. Steve and Carol Olson have been to it before and were going again this year. We thought it would be a good excuse to go to Colorado and do some hiking. Cecil Wise also decided to make the trip.
We all traveled separately and had various types of trouble, but we all made it there and back safely. We met at the destination and swapped adventure stories of the road.
The Colorado Conclave has been going on since 1984 and has had 500 cars show up. This year, I would guess there were 350 – 400 cars. They ranged from the usual suspects, MGs, Triumphs, Land Rovers, Jaguars, Minis, Austin Healeys and Lotus. Cars we don’t normally see included Aston Martin, Wolseley, Ford Zodiac, Rolls Royce, Citroen 2CV (it was a right-hand-drive model), Peerless, and Jenson Healey.
On Saturday morning, they have a drive you can do following directions and answering questions about things you see on the drive. The drive went through some really pretty countryside. I heard local (multiple year) attendees say that they did not know some of the roads were out there that close to town. We tried to answer the questions, but did not turn in the sheet. We decided after missing all four questions in one segment of the drive, we didn’t have a chance anyway.
Near the end of the show, we moved under the Triumph club tent to get out of the sun. One of the members started asking about what we were doing next. He ended up telling us about roads to take to Salida, CO, and hikes we could take.
We missed the awards ceremony, but fortunately, Carol Olson heard it going on and went down to see what was going on. Turns out, Steve and Carol won first place in the TR7 – TR8 class. And Pat won second in the TR4 – TR250 class. We had so many people there comment on her car, much more so than in Kansas City.

Kactus Creek Croquet Outing By Larry Taylor
On September 19th, members of the KC MG Club gathered at Kactus Creek Croquet Club located
in the rolling green hills of Parkville. This facility is the only professional croquet court in the area and is home to several regional and US croquet association national champions. The full size court is hybrid Bermuda grass maintained to a fast, golf green quality. Club owner Matt Griffith is a national champion and has been playing for over 35 years. After enjoying a pot luck dinner and some adult beverages, Matt, and his lovely wife Ellie, who is also a nationally ranked player, spent the evening instructing eight club members in the rules and finer points of play. Golf Croquet, a fun and interactive version of the original, is played with six hoop (wickets), one peg, and four balls. Games take approximately 15 to 20 minutes, so many games can be played in an evening.
All involved agreed it was a fun evening and a first for the club.
Cars & Coffee at the Kansas City Auto Museum, September 21st
By Denny Hale
On Saturday, Sept 21, the Kansas City MG, Triumph and Lawrence All British Clubs all met at the
Kansas City Auto Museum for Cars & Coffee and to see the Exotic and Supercar exhibit that was
there. The weather threatened rain, but it held off until late morning before it started drizzling.
The cars in the museum were beautiful, with two Ferraris, a Cobra, a Viper, a DeTomaso Pantera,
a Noble, an Aston Martin and a Jaguar. The cars outside the museum were beautiful too! We
had 5 MGs, 5 Triumphs, a Mini, a Morris, and an S2000 from the clubs. Most of the rest of the
parking lot spots were filled with American muscle cars, and one Model T. We were all a little
offended when a tow truck cruised by slowly and checked us out. “Who told the tow truck that
British cars were meeting there?” He was like a shark circling!

St. Louis All British Car & Cycle Show By Monica Mills
Four KCMGCC members showed up at Creve Coeur Lake Park in St. Louis for the show on
Saturday, September 21st. Larry Taylor in his Triumph TR3, Tom Berry in his MGA, John Styers
in his Jensen Healey, and Rick & Monica Mills in their MGB. The Friday night BBQ held by the St.
Louis Club was a great success as always. A short shower Friday and a few sprinkles Saturday
didn’t deter the nearly 175 cars that showed up for the show. The 20th Anniversary Jensen
National East gathering was also held that week and was also the Guest Marque for the show.
Tom Berry received a 1st Place award for his MGA and Larry Taylor received a 2
nd Place award
for his TR3. John Styers received his 3rd
Place award at the Jensen National East Banquet for his
Jensen Healey in his Rubber Bumper class. 36 Jensens were present — all different types,
including an extremely rare 1935 Jensen Shooting Break (see pictures below).

Lake Garnett Historic Group (H): By Russ Sifers
October 11-13, 2019
Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revival is an event that takes place on a “Ghost Track” where the SCCA sanctioned sports car racing from 1959 to 1972 on the road around Lake Garnett.
The Historic Class is for older and slower sports cars, plus cars of historic interest.
These are street legal sports cars made around 1960 or older that could have been raced at Lake Garnett.
The maximum speed on the track for Class H is 50 mph.
Drivers may pass with care in the 2 designated Passing Zones.
We will run for 20 minutes at noon on Saturday and Sunday. You may do either or both days.
This is not a race. This is a fun run. The “Winners” will be all who participate. You will receive an official Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revival dash plaque.
Registration is still open at www.LGGPR.org.

2019 Mill Creek Hill Climb Challenge By Russ Sifers
Last year’s Mill Creek Hill Climb Challenge was fun and we had a good turnout. We had an
MG TA, MG TC, MG TD, MG Midget, original Mini Cooper, and a Triumph TR4 make it to
the top of the hill and back down.
This year, we will have our annual hill climb on November 2nd
, again at Jon Green's House,
6151 Barker Road, Shawnee, KS 66218. We are looking at a different route that still will be
challenging and we will again invite the Triumph club.

Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revival 2019 By Russ Sifers
Lake Garnett is an old historic “Ghost Track” at Garnett, KS that held famous SCCA races from
1959 to 1972. Many of the sports car greats raced there: Dave McDonald, Don Yenko, Ken Miles,
Jack Hinkle, Jim Hall, Bob Johnson, Bob Aylward, Toly Arutunoff, and KC legends Bob Hindson,
Tom Newcomer, Grace Harris, Joe Egle and Woody Woodward.
I never had the opportunity to see the races at Lake Garnett in the old days, but now I have the
opportunity to actually run my 1949 MG TC on the very same road course as legends of sports car
racing did. For me, it is an honor and a thrill to run my MG in their dust at Lake Garnett.
Would you like to join me in the Historic Group H for the older and slower sports cars? Go the
www.LGGPR.org and look for Registration.

Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revival 2019
Despite rumors to the contrary the 2019 Lake Garnett Grand Prix
Revival is a Go for the weekend of October 11th to 13th.
Thanks to everyone who registered early - we are going to be processing all the applications and payments this week, and you will receive a confirmation email.
There are still some open spots available in all of the track groups, as well as the autocross, show and other events, so if any of your pals have yet to register, please pass along that they need to get signed up ASAP.
We’ve left registration open and extended the “early bird” time frame until September 15th (to receive the discounted entry fees and free event t-shirt). On 9/16 all the prices go up and no more free shirts, but we’ll still accept applications through October 6th. After that, any registrations will need to be done at the event.
We heard all of the rumors and rumblings that the event was cancelled due to catastrophic damage to the track that occurred during several heavy storms that rolled through Garnett in the spring. The extent of the damage was GREATLY exaggerated (no, the dam did NOT collapse). A small section washed out under the bridge on the short straight between Flat Iron and Welda which required several rounds of repairs, but the city of Garnett has been extremely cooperative in making sure the reconstruction and road surface is suitable for the Revival. We sincerely appreciate their assistance and attention they’ve given to all this.
The bottom line is, we are full steam ahead with this year’s event and need everyone to help us share the word. We will be commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the raceway and highlighting the 50th Anniversary of the Boss Mustang, so we hope that we get to see all of our old friends from past years and lots of new ones!
Get your cars running.
Can't wait to see you on the track!!

Midget Mumblings By Steve Olson
Having an overdrive transmission is worth a bunch if you ever drive your car on the
highway. It gives you a 5th gear and lets the engine relax a bit as you keep up with modern 70 MPH+ traffic. I have never regretted the money and effort I put into
replacing my 1976 Midget’s transmission with an overdrive one from a Triumph Spitfire. Decades ago when I made this upgrade, you could buy an overdrive for a
couple hundred bucks. Now you have to move the decimal to the right. But I still think it is worth it. And not only do I now have a 5th gear, I also can click in and out
of 3rd gear overdrive when needed to power through the twisties, or perhaps pass some slow moving traffic on a two-lane road.
I had hoped to gain two gears with the overdrive, but turns out that 3rd over and 4th direct are so nearly the same final ratio that it is nearly impossible to tell the
difference. But being able to click in and out of 3rd over without need of using the
clutch is similar to what modern car drivers can do with their fancy paddle shifters.
TR drivers brag about being able to use their overdrives in all forward gears. On MGs
and Spitfires, it is locked out in all but 3rd and 4th. I understand on late model MGBs, it only operates in 4th. All of this is controlled by a cheap switch mounted on top of
the transmission that has been known to fail frequently and it is nearly impossible to change with the transmission still in the car. In a pinch, I have just bypassed this
switch, but then if you try to use reverse while the OD is engaged, I am told bad things will happen. I am not sure this is true, but I am unwilling to try it just to see.
The pump inside the transmission that actually moves the gears of the overdrive is driven by the output shaft. If the car is moving less than about 20 MPH, the pump
won’t develop enough pressure to engage overdrive. So I wonder if having the ability, in theory, to use overdrive in 1st and 2nd gears would be practical. I rarely go
20 MPH in 2nd, let alone 1st. I know how to rig up a circuit using a relay and the backup light switch to only lock out overdrive in reverse. But my engine doesn’t
much like high revs so I don’t push it to the red line often. The thrill of seeing the
tach needle up there is one that should be enjoyed quickly as loud noises are soon likely to follow.
Converting your car to use a modern 5-speed transmission gives you the relaxed highway cruising, but you still need to use the clutch to change up and down on those
lovely crooked roads. I prefer my overdrive!

For Sale: 1950 MG TD This MG TD needs a new home in Kansas City and the KC MG Car Club!
It was purchased by my father in 1969 and has been in our family ever since. He belonged to the
MG Club in Topeka, KS. He restored the engine and installed a new wire harness, probably in
1976. He also put all new gaskets and rubber on the car. From the body number, we suspect it is
an early 1950 TD. The body color is not original, but we never had it re-painted. From 1969-1987,
it was stored in my father’s garage in Topeka and driven only on the weekends around town.
From 1987-2010, it was stored in his garage in Colorado and rarely driven or worked on. From
2010-2018, it was stored in my brother’s garage in Wichita, KS and was never driven. Since 2018,
it has been stored in a temperature-controlled garage in Kansas City, MO. I recently had the
carburetors restored by Joe Curto in New York, one of the best at restoring carburetors. I also had
the gas tank lined and installed a new fuel pump. The body has no rust. The engine runs, but the
brakes need to be worked on. My guess is it has several thousand miles on the post-restored
engine and new wire harness. I’m not sure how many miles it had when my father purchased it in
1969. My father may be able to answer any other questions you may have about the car.
If interested, please call or email to arrange a time to see it and to discuss the price.
