Newsletter No. 18 Term 2 20 th June 2018 Week 8 KARORI NORMAL SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Donald Street, Karori Welcome Welcome to the following new pupils: Kai SMITH. From the Principal Kia Ora Koutou Last Friday we celebrated Matariki. In the morning we worked in groups containing children from Year 1 to Year 8 and at midday the whole school met together and each team shared some of their Kapa Haka learning. One of our charter goals is around a culture of care, so it was great to see the wonderful caring leadership demonstrated by our older children as they worked with our younger ones. A huge thank you to Cherie Le Quesne for organising the celebration. Another aspect of this charter goal relates to resilience, I found this quote on a blog at the weekend and it made me reflect on how we work with children at KNS and on my own parenting; "prepare your child for the path, not the path for your child." I am very grateful to David Wong, our Room 20 teacher and Team Kahikatea Team Leader, for the fantastic work he does with our Year 7 & 8 bands each year. He does this most mornings before school and during many of his lunchtimes; he certainly has had a major impact on the lives of many of our current and past students. It was great therefore, to hear about the success of one our children who has moved on to secondary school. Samantha Romijn, one of our ex-KNS students (now in Year 11 at Wellington Girls’ College) recently won 2 nd place at Smokefree Rockquest Wellington for an original song in the solo/duo category. Samantha had her first experiences singing in front of others and performing live music when she was a student at KNS and was a member of a band in both Year 7 and Year 8. KARORI NORMAL SCHOOL

NEWSLETTER Donald Street, Karori

Welcome

Welcome to the following new pupils: Kai SMITH.

From the Principal

Kia Ora Koutou

Last Friday we celebrated Matariki.

Another aspect of this charter goal relates to resilience, I found this quote on a blog at the weekend and it made me reflect on how we work with children at KNS and on my own parenting; "prepare your child for the path, not the path for your child."

I am very grateful to David Wong, our Room 20 teacher and Team Kahikatea Team Leader, for the fantastic work he does with our Year 7 & 8 bands each year. He does this most mornings before school and during

many of his lunchtimes; he certainly has had a major impact on the lives of many of our current and past students. It was great therefore, to hear about the success of one our children who has moved on to secondary school.

Western Zone Cross Country Results

Firstly congratulations to all the students who ran last week at the Western Zone Cross Country. They all did extremely well on a new track around Karori West Normal School, but also waiting patiently in the hall between the races. It made for a long day for the students and they all did extremely well.

Thank you also to the parent helpers that helped out today. We really appreciate your help and support as well as your flexibility with the changes this morning. So thank you very much.

Below are the results for the students that came in the top 20 positions. Those that placed in the top 10 are now going through to the Interzone Cross Country at Karori Park on Tuesday 19th June.

Gala News

Gardening Stall: The gala garden stall members are about to start work and we need empty six pack plant containers. If you have any please contact Abbie at [email protected] for the address to deliver to. We are always keen for new members - no gardening experience required! Please let Abbie know if you are interested in helping out a little or a lot.

Baby and Toddler Stall 2018: Trainee Convenors Required 2018 will be Suez and Sacha's last year managing the baby and toddler stall at the KNS Gala. We would love to pass on our knowledge (and banana boxes) to one or two people who are keen to take over. The idea is that these people will work closely with us this year so that we can show them the systems that we have in place to make the sorting and setting up as easy as possible. This is a great opportunity for someone to see how things are done. We have already

committed elsewhere for 2019 so will not be available to help out then.

Please email Sacha on [email protected] or Suzanne on [email protected] if you are interested.
