THE Kathu Police
would like to warn
the community of
Kathu and the
surrounding areas
not to become
involved in internet
fraud schemes.
The public should
ensure that they only buy from reputable,
legitimate and verifiable internet suppliers
and companies. Beware of sites where
anonymous sellers advertise goods and cars.
CARRYING cash safely is vital in the
prevention of crime. By keeping the
following tips in mind, you can keep
yourself from becoming a robbery victim.
Individuals:
When paying accounts, consider options
that are lower risk instead of withdrawing
large sums of cash:
) Carry as little cash as possible.
) Consider the convenience of paying
accounts electronically (consult the bank to
find out about other available options).
) Consider making use of cellphone
banking or internet transfers or ATMs to
do banking.
Businesses:
Small businesses which are cash based
and need to deposit money regularly at the
bank should apply the following:
) Alternate the days and times on which
the cash is deposited.
) Never make bank visits public, even to
people close to the business owner.
) Do not openly display the money being
deposited while standing in the bank
queue.
) Avoid carrying money bags, briefcases or
openly displaying the deposit receipt book.
) Identify another branch of the bank that
can be visited to ensure that the banking
pattern is not easily recognised or detected.
THE Dingleton police are
investigating a case of
culpable homicide after a fatal
accident that occurred on 23
June on the N14 road between
Kathu and Dingleton.
The driver of one of the
trucks involved in the
accident alleged that he was
on his way to Postmasburg
when one of the front tyres of
his truck burst.
He then lost control of the
vehicle.
The truck collided with a
waste disposal truck that was
travelling in the opposite
direction to Kathu.
Zenzile George Mthakati,
the driver of the first truck,
was injured and taken to
hospital. He has since been
discharged.
The driver of the waste
disposal truck, K. Leukes and
his passenger, Ricardo van
der Westhuizen, both from
Postmasburg, passed away on
the scene.
Const. Desmond Kgadiete of
the Dingleton police detectives
is the investigating officer.

DERICK EN LENIE VISSER, Kathu:
Ek hoop jy slaap lekker, jou dag sal kom.
Eendag sal jy rekenskap daarvoor moet gee.

KALAHARI BULLETIN, DONDERDAG 3 JULIE 2014 3
Elsona Steyn
nooit gedink daar skort dalk iets
met my o nie.
n Bril laat jou wegskram van
mense dit het ek met die eerste
groepfotos vir die jaarblad
ondervind op die foto glimlag
almal. Behalwe ek. Daar waar my
o moes wees, is twee wit kolle in
n donker raam.
Ek voer n vriendelike vyand-
skap met my bril, want hy gedra
hom sleg. As die glase nie toewa-
sem nie, raak dit soms weg. Dan
moet ek iemand anders se bril
leen om myne te vind.
Ek het n ding oor skoon
brilglase ek maak dit gedurig
skoon.
bifokaal of die sonbril. Of dalk die
winkelbril waarvan die vetterige
glase n gisteraand se springmie-
lie-etery nog skoongemaak moet
word.
Eendag word brilstories om n
etenstafel gepraat. n Man vertel
Toe gewaar hy iemand. Met n
naand-naand groet hy beleef net
neuse hoort, soos valstande in
monde en klaar.
Askies, bril, bely n ander
vriend. Hy kon ook nie in die bed
gelees kry nie omdat veral sy
linkeroog dof en vaal was. Uit
moedeloosheid het hy aan die
slaap geraak, net om die volgende
oggend agter te kom sy linkerkant-
ste brilglas het uitgeval en l langs
sy bed op die vloer.
Ek en my bril en die duur rame
het met verloop van tyd getroue
vriende geword. Daarsonder sou
my lewe n woestyn gewees het.
Weggooibare kontaklense is,
brand nie meer as jy uie skil nie;
jaarlikse ondersoek by die
oogspesialis aan. Hy beaam,
simpatiek dog ferm, dat hy
genoodsaak is om n lensvervan-
ging te doen. Nie net in die
linkeroog nie, die regter een moet
ook vervang word. Weer terug na
die bril? Aikna, s ek. Ek is nog
nie gereed daarvoor nie. Die
oogkundige het ook nie raad nie;
kontaklense vir sulke o is
blykbaar nie meer n opsie nie.
Maklike operasie, vertel almal, oor
in n japtrap, sommer niks.
Een van die dae, n my opera-
sie, kan ek die wreld dus sonder
n bril bekyk. My beker behoort
oor te loop van vreugde, maar ek
is gedurig half versigtig, asof ek
sal soek na my bril vir rustigheid
en kalmte. Ons twee kom n lang
pad, hy het my ten minste deur
dik (lense) en dun gedra. Die
grond bewe onder my voete, ek
sien al hoe val ek my disnis.
Stadig, maar seker en bietjies-biet-
jies sal ek my nuutgevonde,
oorgemaakte self aanvaar. Ek is
nou pens en pootjies hierin, ek en
my nuwe heldersiende o.
Ellende en vreugde

Saam met die polisie op n

oor die arrogante houdings van
die smokkelaars.
Eergister ontvang ek n doku-
ment van n ma wat haar storie
van hartseer en herstel vertel. n
Storie oor haar dogter se verkrag-
ting n paar jaar gelede.
En sy vertel van die besluit wat
sy geneem het om openlik daaroor
te praat sodat hul storie dalk
ander sal help.
Soos n mens lees, so loop die
trane. Maar jy kry ook ongeloofli-
ke respek vir so iemand wat so
doen.
Maar ek waardeer die vertroue
wat mense in my plaas om met
integriteit en respek hul stories te

die slegte stories tog ook n

Verlede week was die Bulletin
weer propvol slegte nuus. n
Man bel my en vra: Het jy nie al

SO tydjie gelede s iemand vir
my: Ek sit nie my voete in
Kuruman nie. Die dorp is besig
om uitmekaar te val en dit gaan
net erger word.
Dit is ongelukkig waar, ja.
Diefstal, inbrake en gewapende
rooftogte is aan die orde van die
dag.
Inwoners is ontevrede en
niemand voel meer veilig nie.
Soms word ek met oproepe of
besoekers in my kantoor oorval.
Inwoners van Kuruman en
omgewing bring die probleme na
my toe, sodat ek dit verder kan
ondersoek en daaroor skryf.
Dit is goed vir die koerant ek
is afhanklik van die inwoners in
ons omgewing vir nuus hetsy
goeie of slegte nuus.
So n week gelede hardloop ek
van die een probleem na die
volgende kamera en notaboek in

beland tog net altyd in die sand).

Nood bring

DIE afgelope paar maande is
Suid-Afrika deur n vlaag teleur-
stellende en selfs bestaansbedrei-
gende gebeure getref.
Die nasleep van Marikana het
die langste mynstaking in die
geskiedenis tot gevolg gehad. Die
ekonomiese hartland van die
platinumgordel is deur die ergste
swaarkry sedert sy ontstaan
getref.
As in ag geneem word dat met
beter kommunikasie en betrekkin-
ge tussen die ekonomiese vennote
naamlik die werkers, werkgewers
en die staat dit grootliks
verhoed kon gewees het, en wat
die volle ekonomiese impak gaan
wees, is die huidige ekonomiese
pessimisme te verstane.
Die staking in die platinum-
myne het ten einde geloop en net
toe daar weer n liggie in die
donker tonnel verskyn, was dit die
volgende vakbond wat dreig met
stakings en verlammende optrede
op n ekonomie wat soos n ou,
dieselenjin in die winterkoue
stotter.
Gooi by hierdie pruttende pot
van arbeidsoptrede en gevolglike
politieke en ekonomiese onstabili-
teit die regering se planne om
grondhervorming op nuwe
maniere toe te pas en die pot
brand aan.
Hierdie plan lyk hoogs onuit-
voerbaar, tog is dit op die tafel.
Die nuwe plan impliseer dat
boere 50% van hul grond sonder
vergoeding aan hul werkers
afstaan. Daar sal wel n fonds
geskep word wat tot die uitbrei-
ding van die boerdery bydra.
Beleggers kan sekerlik onder
hierdie omstandighede nie kwalik
geneem word as hulle die pot net
een kyk gee en wyk na die
vleispotte van ander lande nie
selfs ander lande in Afrika.
Met hierdie donker prentjie in
gedagte is dit moeilik om aan
ekonomiese groei, kapitaaluitbrei-
ding en investering te dink. Tog is
dit juis in hierdie onseker tye dat
van die suksesvolste onderne-
mings begin word.
Eintlik is dit nou die tyd om
antwoorde te vind vir die tergende
vrae en n model ter tafel te l wat
reeds die uitdagendste tye in ag
neem.
Die aanloop tot die verkiesing
was grootliks vir van di onstabi-
liteit verantwoordelik, met
karakters wat mekaar op ongure
maniere die loef wou afsteek.
Die uitslag van die verkiesing
en die nuwe regeerspan behoort
nou stabiliteit en normaliteit tot
gevolg te h met al die potensiaal
vir beter nuus op die horison.
God sal jou nooit in
die steek laat nie
Ds. Christo Jonck
IN Matteus 10:29-31 staan: Julle is
meer werd as baie mossies.
Hier is n paar harefeite net
vir die pret:
) Daar is gemiddeld 100 000 hare
op n mens se kop;
) Rooikoppe het ongeveer 90 000
hare. Mense met swart hare het
sowat 110 000 hare en blondines
140 000;
) Die gemiddelde man wat elke
dag skeer, verwyder daagliks
sowat n millimeter baard. Dit
beteken dat tussen die ouderdom
van 20 en 65 jaar hy sowat 4,6 m
baard verwyder.
God weet persoonlik van my;
) By God is jy meer as n
nommer. By Hom is jy n naam.
Jou naam is in Sy handpalm
geskryf (Jes. 49:16) sodat Hy nooit
van jou kan vergeet nie. Jou hare
is getel;
) God is daar. Jesus gebruik twee
beelde om dit vir ons te verduide-
lik die van die mossies en die
van hare.
Selfs n mossie wat maar n
waardelose voltjie is, is kosbaar
vir God. Daarom kan jy verseker
weet God is daar vir jou;
) In die Ou Testament is die tel
van n mens se hare beeldspraak
wat vir jou wil vertel van die
veiligheid van daardie mens wat
leef onder die beskerming van
God. Jesus gebruik hierdie twee
beelde om vir jou te s: God sal
jou nooit in die steek laat nie;
) God is die Pa wat in beheer is.
Hier is nie iemand wat hard en
koud is nie, maar Iemand wat jou
Pa is en alles in Sy almagtige
vermo sal doen om jou te
beskerm. Hoekom? Jy is Sy kind
en Hy is jou pa.
Daarom hoef ons volgens Jesus
vir niks bang te wees nie, want
Jesus-volgelinge tree altyd en oral
op in die teenwoordigheid van
God, vir wie jy meer werd is as n
swerm mossies en wat boonop
elke haar op jou kop getel het.

SONJA VAN NIEKERK, wat in
Sishen (nou Dingleton) gebore
is en haar skoolloopbaan aan
die Laerskool FJ van Niekerk
in Sishen begin het en daarna
haar horskoolloopbaan by die
Horskool Kathu voltooi het, se
man, die sanger Zak, is twee
jaar gelede in n motorongeluk
by Sasolburg oorlede.
Ek is erg ontsteld nadat die
verhoor van die munisipale
amptenaar, wat na bewering
die ongeluk veroorsaak het, vir
die soveelste keer uitgestel is.
Sonja het verlede week weer
met hul seuns, Jano (4) en Zian
(2), van Hartbeespoort na
Sasolburg gereis, maar moes
hoor die verhoor gaan nou eers
in Augustus begin.
Dit moes Woensdag begin
het, maar is vertraag omdat
Basie Motloung, die beskuldig-
de, van regsverteenwoordiger
verander het.
Ons hoop maar net geregtig-
heid sal geskied.
Die regter het die beskuldig-
de wel gewaarsku dat die saak
nie weer uitgestel sal kan word
nie, het Sonja ges.
Motloung, wat ten tyde van
die ongeluk n tydelik geskorste
amptenaar van die Metsimaho-
lo-munisipaliteit was, het op 30
Maart 2012 met sy Audi teen
Van Niekerk en sy vriend
Johan Nortj se bussie gebots.
Volgens n spoedkamera het
Motloung teen sowat 146 km/h
in n 80 km/h-sone gery.
Van Niekerk is uit die bussie
geslinger.
Nortj het ernstige nek- en
kopbeserings opgedoen.
Volgens Sonja was hulle in
Sasolburg sodat Zak n nuwe
musiek-DVD in Vereeniging kon
laat opneem. Hy sou die week
daarna by die KKNK in
Oudtshoorn opgetree het.
Nortj se dogter, Natasja Fourie,
het ges die ongeluk het haar pa
geknak.
Zak se dood was n groot skok.
Hy sukkel steeds om dit te
verwerk. Die hele tragedie het
veroorsaak dat my pa baie stil
en teruggetrokke geraak het.
Hy sukkel van tyd tot tyd
om tussen baie mense sosiaal
te verkeer en het nog baie
vrae.

wat in die laat 1950s in
Suid-Afrika gebore is, n
vrou wat vasgevang is
binne die beperkings van
n stelsel, maar met n
versigtige blik op dinge
soos die tuisland-be-
leid, die expat-generasie,
moederskap, die lewe in
Afrika en ander beteke-
nisvolle aangeleenthede.
Hierdie uiteenlopende
invloede word deurlo-
pend teen die agtergrond
van haar witheid beleef.
Adriaanse het di boek
as deel van haar meester-
graadstudie in kreatiewe
skryfkunde geskryf. Dit is nie alleen
die klein verhaal van die hoofka-
rakter nie, maar ook van Suid-Afri-
ka. Die storie van die hoofkarakter
en van Suid-Afrika is nie so eenvou-
dig as wat die titel aandui nie.
Die roman vertel die verhaal van
die anonieme hoofkarakter en haar
lotgevalle binne die Suid-Afrikaanse
konteks. Haar storie is nie uniek
aan haar nie, maar is universeel
van alle wit vroue wat sedert die
1950s in Suid-Afrika grootgeword
rakter: Die kinders wil landuit, Pa.
Sommer so met n rugsak en n
vliegkaartjie sonder terugkeerdatum.
met my wit vel in hierdie vreemde
plek.
Hierdie woorde van die hoofkarak-
ter verwys na belangrike temas,
soos vervreemding, om te behoort,
begrip en emigrasie.
Die roman verwoord ook die
Suid-Afrikaner wat kies om hier te
bly en nie pad te gee uit die land
nie.
Soos die hoofkarakter later in die
verhaal dink: Sy wil hom vra oor
die momentum en hoe lank die
wreld se respek sal hou. Of dalk
eerder hoe lank die respek vir die
eie sal hou.
staning. n Verposing.

DIE onderwysers van die
Laerskool Kathu het
verlede week hul kosmaak-
vernuf tydens die Laerskool
Kathu se 2014-Masterchef-

Die onderwysers moes die
beste pannekoek en vulsel
van die beskikbare bestand-
dele maak.
Die spanne het nie n
idee gehad wat die bestand-
dele is waarmee hulle kon
werk nie.
Lindie Vries was die
gasvrou van die dag en het
al die aspirant-kokke en
beoordelaars hartlik
verwelkom.
Die kokke is deur n
suigstokkie-lotery in spanne
ingedeel, waarna hulle hul
bestanddeelbokse kon
oopmaak.
Al die bestanddele in die
boks moes gebruik word.
Die spanne het flink aan
die werk gespring, van
hulle het die pannekoeke

ON 24 June, the Ambassadors
School of Science (ASOS) held a
friendly interschool competition
and motivational day for gr. 8
to gr. 12 learners.
The event was hosted by the
Langberg High School in
Olifantshoek. Learners from the
Langberg High School, the
Gamagara High School in
Deben and the Sesheng Interme-
diate School near Kathu
attended the event.
Before the event started, the
learners engaged in a few
friendly games of chess to
limber up their skills. During
the event, learners also compe-
ted against each other in chess,
Scrabble, mathematics and
science quizzes, spelling and
public speaking. The topics for
the public speaking were The
effect that poverty has on
learners performance at school
and The negative or positive
impact of social media.
Princess Thwala, the stakehol-
der relations executive of ARM,
Irene Dlomo, corporate socio-
economic development (SED)
manager, and Charlotte Stoole,
the SED development officer of
ARM, attended the event. Jan
Lottering of Maths SA, who
supports the ASOS teachers,
and Abraham Morris, the
headmaster of the Langberg
High School, were there to
monitor the competition.
Elrinda Rost, the Assmang Iron
Ore superintendent of enterpri-
se development, thanked all
participating parties and
schools for their involvement in
the over-all ASOS projects.
Participating schools ASOS
teachers helped to co-ordinate
the different competitions. Muso
Konyana, an ambassador from
the ASOS, was the master of
ceremonies and ensured a sense
of friendly integration between
the learners of the different
schools. Assmang Khumani Iron
Ore distributed scarves, coffee
mugs and hats to the learners
in order to ward off the winter
coldness.
Konyana started the event
with a few brain teasers and
asked the learners what their
expectations for the day were.
Thwalas keynote speech was
one of the highlights and she
encouraged them to excel in
their studies.

Mobile Money is operated by TYME, a distribution channel of the South African Bank of Athens Limited, an authorised nancial services and registered credit provider (FSP5865, NCRCP6).
SOUTH AFRICA has the third highest
unemployment rate in theworld for peo-
ple between the ages of 15 and 24, accor-
ding to the World Economic Forum
(WEF) Global Risk 2014 report.
Figures provided by Stats SA
(www.statssa.gov.za) indicate that the
unemployment rate among young South
Africans increased to 36,1% in 2014, ma-
ny of whom have become discouraged
and have stopped looking for a job.
Angelo Pereira, managing director of
GOAL2WORK, said:
Amongst unemployed youth there is
a perception that finding and securing
a job is beyond their ability to control
and therefore they simply drift aimles-
sly waiting for something to happen.
Based on experience, Pereira said: This
is a misperception and job-seekers can
take control and conduct an effective job
search. The search for work is about
much more than money; it is also about
the search for daily meaning and a way
to organise time.Work is a source of self-
esteem, recognition and belonging. Jo-
blessness often leads to stress, isolation
and loneliness. With a job search plan
that fulfils someof these needs, a job-see-
ker has a far greater chance of succee-
ding.
There are vast numbers of program-
mes and interventions directed at the
crisis of unemployment in South Africa.
These initiatives are predominantly ai-
med at skills development and job crea-
tion, leaving the essential skill of job se-
arch largely unaddressed.
Searching for and securingmeaning-
ful employment is not instinctual; it is
a skill that needs to be learnt. Multi-ge-
nerational unemployment has leftmany
young people with no role models or
mentors to guide their quest to find a
job, said Pereira.
Coupling experience gained over 20
years in guiding thousands of job-see-
kers through the steps that lead to job
search success, with input from skilled
educationalists and talented career spe-
cialists, the Options Recruitment and
Training Group developed the GO-
AL2WORK Jobseekers Toolkit, desig-
ned to provide a clearly-defined course
of action aimed at viable positioning in
themarket in the shortest possible time.
The first stage job-seekers should
concentrate on is understanding and ap-
preciating their uniqueness and develo-
ping their personal brand.
In this way the job-seekers self-es-
teem is reinforced. The next step is the
preparation and implementation of an
effective job searchplan,which includes
goals and timelines. The GOAL2WORK
team designed the Toolkit with these as-
pects in mind, said Pereira.
TheGOAL2WORKJobseekers Toolkit
addresses many other obstacles a job-
seekermay face and is seen as a compre-
hensive job search programme.
Initially only offered in a lecture
workshop format, the Jobseekers Tool-
kit has been launched in a new, inexpen-
sive, online, self-study version (www.go-
al2work.co.za), ensuring all South Afri-
cans have access to this irreplaceable
job search aid.

THE Bankhara Bodulong High School
held its first teachers and school
governing body (SGB) awards on 14
June. The event was organised by the
principal of the school. She highlighted
that the idea has been a dream since the
inception of the school in 2010. It was
about time to turn the dream into
reality by motivating and appreciating
the commitment and support of both
teachers and the SGB.
The school obtained 90,62% with its
first matriculants in 2012 and in 89,74%
in 2013, that placed them on the fifth
position in the John Taolo Gaetsewe
Education District.
The principal said that it was all due
to hard work, dedication and co-operati-
on of her staff. She therefore saw a need
to give extrinsic motivation. The SGB
and non-teaching staff were also awar-
ded with certificates, because without
their support the school could not have
been where it is today. Bothoboile
Modise, the PR counsellor, gave a brief
background of how the schools history
and informed staff members how proud
the community of Bankhara Bodulong
are of their high school. TEACHERS of the Bankhara Bodulong High School who received various awards. Photo: Supplied
SOUTH AFRICAN small and medium
businesses need mentorship, experience and
financial support in order to grow into
sustainable enterprises.
This is the focus of the Sanlam Enterpri-
se Development (ED) Programme, a partner-
ship formed with the Association of Savings
and Investment South Africa (ASISA).
The Programme invests in the sustainabi-
lity of small and medium-sized enterprises,
in South Africa and also aligns with
Governments drive for job creation and
economic growth.
Francois Adriaanse, head of Corporate
Affairs at Sanlam, says the Sanlam/ASISA
ED programme is unique, because it
recognises that the real hurdle to sustaina-
ble growth for many entrepreneurs is lack
of experience and a need for mentorship.
The focus of the programme is therefore on
incubating and developing small and
medium businesses, that show potential for
future growth, rather than simply supply-
ing grant money and expecting business
owners to achieve growth on their own.
Adriaanse says a strong entrepreneurial
sector, is critical to the success of South
Africas economy. By focussing on helping
a few existing businesses, we know the
ripple effect can be immeasurable in terms
of job creation, skills transfer and revenue
creation.
For the launch phase of the Sanlam/ASI-
SA ED programme, five predominantly
black-owned businesses with high impact
potential were selected by Sanlams imple-
mentation partner, the ASISA Enterprise
Development (ED) Fund. These businesses
are either part of the Sanlam Groups
supply chain or may be considered as
future suppliers. The ASISA ED Fund is
also responsible for providing financial and
business development skills to these SMEs.
Adriaaanse says the Sanlam/ASISA ED
Programme combines investment funding
and business development into a single
package.
SMEs require more than just financial
support in order to grow. Our programme
offers tailored business development
support followed by financial support, timed
according to the specific needs of SMEs.
Those that qualify for funding are provided
with a further seven years of SME growth
support, through the ASISA ED Fund.
Liquid Thought, a digital strategy and
innovations agency, that supplies web and
mobile technology solutions, has been
provided with business growth support and
mentorship, scaling the enterprise to
investment readiness. It receives financial
support through the ASISA ED Fund, in
order to sustain this growth. The real
power of the joint enterprise development
initiative is not about money, says
Adriaanse.
This is not a quick-fix project that wants
to achieve long-term goals by pumping
grant money into fledging small and
medium businesses. Its about creating
sustainable businesses that will be able to
apply their newly gained knowledge and
skills to expand, thereby creating jobs and
opportunities for others.
The Sanlam Enterprise Development
programme is managed by enterprise
development specialists, Edge Growth and
will conclude in July 2014.

IN 2011 an orphaned nine-year-old boy was
seen begging in front of the shops in
Batlharos.
The principal of his old school, some 50 km
away in the village of Laxey, persuaded him
to go back to school and arranged for his
elderly grandparents to care for him together
with his other orphaned siblings and
cousins.
It was learning of this boy, together with
the stories of other orphans and impover-
ished learners of the Bojelakgomo Primary
School, that prompted two Australian women
to raise money to build a weekly boarding
house to assist such children and their
carers.
Penny McEniry and Diana Patterson had
come to Kuruman and the Moshaweng
Valley as members of the Kalahari Education
Experience, an international group commit-
ted to assisting the schools in the area.
The boarding house, named Bosele House
by the local management committee, was
formally opened in April.
On their return to Kuruman on 18 June,
McEniry and Patterson were delighted to
learn that the same orphaned boy was now
achieving success in his studies.
He had learnt to read and write and his
grade educator was delighted with both his
progress and the promise he was demonstrat-
ing.
A weekly boarding facility provides these
poverty-stricken students with a supportive
environment where they are clothed, fed and
encouraged in their education, the principal
of the primary school said.
The management committee met in
Kuruman and reported that the operation of
Bosele House was very pleasing.
The children were happy and a marked
improvement in the educational performance
of many of the learners had been observed.
Even though Bosele House has been
completed, it is still a challenge to raise the
funds to cover the operating costs, pay the
staff and oversee the requirements of the
children.
Our work is far from over, said Patter-
son.
We also need to build a laundry and
storeroom and are hopeful that we can find a
partner to assist in raising the money
required.
