warning symbol, clock, 4WD/2WD indicator light, fuel level gauge, and odometer/trip meter/hour me-ter. An "LCD" (Light Emitting Diode) is used forthe belt indicator light, oil pressure symbol, neutral

indicator light and reverse indicator light. Pushingthe "MODE" button shifts the display in the odome-ter/trip meter/hour meter through the four modes;odometer, trip meter A and 8, and hour meter. When the ignition switch is turned on, all the "LCD"segments are displayed for one second, then theclock and meters operate normally depending on themode selected.

2WD/4WD Indicator Light:This ATV can be driven in either "2WO" or "4WO".When the selectable 2WO/4WO shift switch is in"4WO", the "4WO" indicator light will be lit and vice-versa.After shifting there is a momentary delay beforethe indicator lights change.Flashing 2WO/4WO indicator lights signal a mal-function of the Kawasaki Engine Brake Control Sys-tem or the selectable 2WO/4WO system.A flashing interval of 0.5 seconds indicates a mal-function with the 2WO/4WO actuator, a 1 second in-terval indicates the Kawasaki Engine Brake Controlactuator is malfunctioning, and a 2 seconds interval

if both actuators are malfunctioning.Whichever the case may be, see an authorizedKawasaki dealer for repair.

enough. Refer to the MAINTENANCE AND AD~JUSTMENT chapter for more detailed engine oil in-formation.Belt Check Indicator Ught:

This vehicle is equipped with a drive belt failuredetection system. Excessive belt wear or belt dam-age will activate a switch in the transmission covercausing the belt indicator light to flash at intervals of0.35 seconds. The indicator also serves as an hour meter to in-dicate when periodic maintenance should be per-formed. The indicator turns on steadily when thevehicle has been used for a total of 100 hours of op-eration.When the belt indicator light goes on, return thevehicle to the dealer immediately for inspections, ad-justment, and/or repairs as necessary.Refer to the "Sen Drive Transmission" section inthe "Maintenance and Adjustment" chapter.

NOTEoWhen the lead connector for the drive belt indica-tor is disconnected or the lea d itself is cut and bro-ken while the main switch is on, the indicator lightalso starts flashing. In this case also you need toreturn the vehicle to the dealer for reset and eo-justment.

    A. Brake PedalThis ATV is equipped with the electrically se-lectable 2WD/4WD.. When driving in "4WD", allwheels (front and rear) are constantly driven by thedrive train, so that applying either the front brake(the right hand brake lever) or the rear brake (theleft hand brake lever or the brake pedal) slowsboth the front and rear wheels. When climbing ordescending hills any brake application wil.1slow thedownhill wheels. so avoid sudden application ofeither the front or rear brakes. Apply both front andrear brakes gradually.Refer to the HOW TO RIDE and SAFE OPERA-TION chapters for more instructions on braking.

Only use gasoline with the recommended octanerating (See page 47) Avoid filling the tank in the rainor where heavy dust is blowing so that the fuel doesnot get contaminated.Never fill the tank completely to the top. As thefuel expands in a warm tank, it may overflow fromthe vent hose. After refueling, make sure the fillercap is closed securely. It is the torque-limiting typeto prevent over-tightening.

WARNINGHAZARDRefueling without following proper precau-tions.WHAT CAN HAPPENGasoline is extremely flammable and can beexplosive under certain conditions.A fire or explosion can cause severe injuryor death.HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARDWhen refuel'ing., do not smoke. Turn the ignition key to "OFF". Make sure the area is wellventilated and free from any source of nameor sparks; this includes any appliance with apilot light.Never fill the tank completely to the top! Heatmay cause the fuel to expand and overflowthrough the vent in the tank cap. After refuel'ing, make sure the fuel tank capis closed securely. If gasoline is spilled on the rear fender wipeit off immediately. .

Fuel iRequirements:Fuel TypeUse clean, fresh unleaded gasoline with a mini-mum Antiknock Index of 87. The Antiknock Index isposted on service station pumps in the U.S.A. The

GENERAL INFORMATION 49octane rating of a gasoline is a measure of its re-sistance to detonation or "Knocking." The AntiknockIndex is an average of the Research Octane Num-ber (RON) and the Motor Octane Number (MON) asshown in the table below.Octane Rating Method MinimumR a t m oAntiknockIndex x (RON + MON)2 87Research Octane Number (RON) 91

CAUTIONIf engine "knocking" or "pingi.ng" occurs, use a different brand of gasoline of a higheroctane rating. If this condition is allowed tocontinuait can lead to severe engine dam-age.Gasoline quality is important. Fuels of lowquality or not meeting standard industryspecifications may result in unsatisfactoryperformance. Operating problems that resultfrom the use of poor quality or nonreeom-mended fuel may not be covered under yourwarranty.

CAUTIONAvoid using blends of unleaded gasoline andmethanol (wood alcohol) whenever possible, and never use "gasohol" containing morethan 5% methanol. fuel system damage andperformance problems may resultGasoline/Ether Blends- The most common etheris methyl' tertiary butyl ether (MTBE). You may usegasoline containing up to 15%MTBE.

NOTEoOther oxygenates approved for use in unleadedgasoline include TAME (up to 16.7%) and ETBE(up to 17.2%). Fuel containing these oxygenatescan also be used in your Kawasaki.

CAUTIONNever use g~asoline with an octane rat-ing lower than the minimum specified by~Kawasaki.Never use "gasohol" with more than 10%ethanol, or more than 5% methanol. Gaso-line containing methanol must also beblended with cosolvents and corrosioninhibitors.Certain ingredients of gasoline may causepaint fading or damage. Be extra carefulnot to spill gasoline or gasoline oxygenateblends during refueling. When not operating your Kawasaki for 30 to60 days, mix a fuel stabilizer (such as STA-Bll.) with the gasoline in the fuel tank. Fuelstabjlizer add.itives inhibit oxydation of thefuel which minimizes gummy deposits.Never store this product with "gasohol" inthe fuel system. Before storage it is recom-mended that. you drain all fuel from the fueltank and carburetors. See the Storage sec-tion In this manual ..

The differen-tial control lever is located on the left side of the han-dlebar.~hen one front wheel loses traction, it can slip re-dUC ! n9 the p~IIin9 power of the other front wheel. Bypullin~ ~he differential control lever, you can equal-.ze driving force to both front wheels. This is usefulwhen the vehicle is stuck or having difficulty over-coming an obstacle. The differential control lever iseffective only when "4WO" is engaged. When you want to increase traction, pun the con-

trol! lever all the way to the hand grip and grasp thehandlebar securely. Release the lever when you nolonger need the above-mentioned equalizing.
