“What is needed is not well balanced

individuals, but individuals who balance well

with each other “

Meredith Belbin

Dr. Belbin observations on teams:

• People on teams assume different “team roles”

• A “team role“ is a tendency to behave, with others in a certain

way

• He derived 9 roles from those he observed that people will fall

under

• Each team role will determine the team’s success.

3 – Belbin roles in a team

Normaly

• Every team member as two or three more dominant team roles

• The ideal team should have people with all 9 team roles

• Is recommended to know your team roles, to understand better

what is your contribution to the team and which weaknesses you

must pay attention to

4 – Team Formation Process

• It takes some time to a team become efficient

• There are 4 Stages of Team Formation

• Forming

• Storming

• Norming

• Performing

Teams are not completly eficient from day 1!

4 – Team Formation Process

• Most team members are positive and polite

• Some are anxious or excited, as they haven't fully

understood what work the team will do

• Team members' roles and responsibilities aren't clear

• This stage can last for some time, as people start to work

together, and as they make an effort to get to know their

new colleagues.

1 - Forming

4 – Team Formation Process

2 - Storming

• Storming often starts where there is a conflict between team

members' natural working styles

• Some may question the worth of the team's goal, and they

may resist taking on tasks

• Team members who stick with the task at hand may

experience stress, they don’t feel the support or have strong

relationships with their colleagues.

4 – Team Formation Process

3 - Norming

• This is when people start to resolve their differences,

appreciate colleagues' strengths

• Now that team members know one another better, they may

socialize together

• Team Members are able to ask one another for help and

provide constructive feedback.

• People develop a stronger commitment to the team goal,

and you start to see good progress towards it.

4 – Team Formation Process

4 - Performing

• When hard work leads, without friction, to the achievement

of the team's goals

• Members have more confidence working and are more

independent

• Members are comfortable and trust in each other

• Members development is bigger

4 – Team Formation Process

A good team manager needs to ensure the team grows well along the

different stages

• Promote “We” and interactions in the team, teambuilding

• Allow healthy conflict without having to rescue the team

• Make the link between ideas, members

• Provide feedbacks

• Work on individuals development
