EARTH DAY 2013TRAIL BLAZING & REFORESTATION

Kent County Community Services, Parks & recreation, is looking for families, individuals, groups, and volunteer organizations to help Kent County carry on blazing New trails at the Hunn recreation area. this will continue a major trail clearing and reforestation project at Kent County’s Hunn recreation area. the Park and parking area for this project is located at 1624 Sorghum Mill road, dover. From the North gate of dover aFb, go West on rt. 10, turning south (left) on Sorghum Mill road at Carl King gas Company.

earth day is generally observed on april 22 and was started in the United States in 1970 by Senator gaylord Nelson to create awareness for the earth’s environment and to encourage conservation efforts. In 1990, earth day was taken international, and today, more than 500 million people in 175 countries observe earth day. Kent County will observe our local earth day 2013 on Saturday, april 27. volunteers are asked to arrive for check-in between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. We normally finish before 1:00 p.m. depending on the number of volunteers we have and the scope of the project.

volunteers will be helping to cut a new trail within the interior of the Park. this a continuation of our most aggressive volunteer project yet. It will require many volunteers willing to do some hard work. along with developing a new trail, a number of trees will need to be planted along an existing trail.

there will be something for all ages and abilities to do: trail blazing, tree planting and site clean-up (removing discarded household items, trash, and unwanted vegetation). volunteers will be working under the supervision of “team Leaders” and Parks staff. all participants under the age of 14 years must be accompanied by a pre-registered adult parent or guardian volunteer.

the funding for the trees is being provided by Kent County Levy Court and the Memorial tree Fund from trader Funeral Home of dover.

Please bring leather work gloves, hard-soled, lace-up shoes or boots (No SNeaKerS, PLeaSe), and a round-point shovel if you have one. (If you don’t have one, we do.) be sure to dress appropriately for outdoor work and the weather. a handicapped portable restroom and hot and cold drinks, donuts, and fruit will be provided to all volunteers.

If you wish to be a “team Leader” you will be required to attend a lunchtime “safety training” the day before the event (Friday, april 26) between the hours 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Pizza and sodas will be provided by Kent County. “team Leaders” will receive a team leader ball cap after the training. If you are a returning “team Leader”, please let us know when you register for the event.

to register as a volunteer and/or a team Leader and for more information about this special public event, call glenn “Wayne” McCarty, Kent County division of Parks, 302-744-2489 or e-mail [email protected].

volunteers (not team Leaders) may also register on the day of the event at the project site. all registered volunteers will receive a certificate of appreciation and possibly other appreciation gifts (sponsors pending and welcomed).

Please join Kent County Community Services on earth day at Kent County’s Hunn recreation area. Come celebrate and enjoy the experience of leaving a place better than you found it.
