Start to tidy up by cuttingback dead foliageon perennials andgrasses to allow newgrowth to comethrough. Prunefruit trees andwisteria. OlderWisteria plants

can be pruned toremove old stemsand long whippygrowth back to a fewbuds. Prune back toplump buds on newer growthand cut out some congested olderbranches each year to leave youngerstems to grow on.

The rst bulbs such as snowdrops and crocuses

will start to show but may ower later this yearafter the hard winter. Hellebore plants will

be owering. If you do not have these in your

garden they are well worth trying asthey can stand some full sun andshade with the bonus of large

owers in the depths ofwinter.

mid spring. Plantingtomato seeds in pots on a

windowsill later in Februarywill give you a head start for

planting out when frosts are past.

Mulch all fruit trees, bushes and cane fruit witha generous layer of well rotted manure aroundthe roots and apply a general purpose fertilizerto set the plants up for the coming season.
