Our Purpose: To contribute to community safety by reducing re-‐offending.
The Northern Territory Department of Correctional Services supervises adults and youths who are subject to custodial or non-custodial court orders.

An insight into the Darwin Correc+onal Precinct • The Correctional Centre has been designed, structured and staffed to facilitate the development of Indigenous wellness, education and training that will assist in closing the gap of Indigenous disadvantage in the Northern Territory. • All sentenced prisoners are expected to participate in purposeful activity / work / education / programs as an essential component of both Prisoner development and effective Correctional Centre management. • A Structured Day of meaningful work, programs (including visits) and recreation is the foundation of the Prisoner’s Sentence Management Plan. • New multi-disciplined staff approach with training being the foundation of staff; new Staff Training and Development Centre. • Introduction of biometric technology that underpins the Centre’s security system. • Introduction of a Prisoner Interactive Learning System (PILS) • Expansion of Correctional Industries with strong emphasis on prisoner training and employment. • New mothers and babies facilities in the women’s sector. • No Smoking Policy imposed on prisoners and staff. • Improved education and treatment facilities programs like QuickSmart/QuickStart • Supportive cultural and spiritual practices with appropriate facilities being available to Elders and respected-persons.

Our Goals into the future • Review and expand correcBonal industries through Northern Territory CorrecBonal Industries in the correcBonal centres. • Providing prisoners with a pathway to reintegraBon and supporBng industry development through Sentenced to a Job. • IntroducBon of AdministraBve Home DetenBon • Partnerships with communiBes for regional work camps that enables prisoners to serve their sentence ‘in community’ while learning trade skills and undertaking work placements. • Enhancing training, educaBon and programs for prisoners that lead to employment opportuniBes. • Establish mentoring and volunteer programs and expansion of the Elders VisiBng Program. • Improving rehabilitaBve outcomes by providing pre and post-‐release supported accommodaBon to prisoners and offenders. • IntroducBon of Electronic Monitoring as new approach for the management and rehabilitaBon of prisoners and offenders. • Development of a Youth JusBce Framework that will provide a coordinated and comprehensive response to youth jusBce issues. • ImplementaBon of Youth Boot Camps.
