about who I am, my potential and

what I can off er. Joining Kendal

College has been one of the

best decisions I have made yet!

It is somewhere you can learn,

“Freedom, friends, what more can I ask for? I get to do the thing that I love, every single day, whilst learning in a relaxed environment.“Chloe Hirst, Performing Arts

“There aren’t restrictions, such as uniforms, to keep you from expressing your personality. We are treated as adults and taught by industry professionals. College is special to me because they helped me through extremely diff icult times, and it was never too much to ask for help with studies or non-related issues. Prospective students should look forward to a friendly and responsive environment where they can be confident to share ideas and talk to other students and tutors.“Emma Laff erty, Engineering (Apprentice) and previous Motor Vehicle student

“I went straight into sixth form without looking around at other options. I felt that staying in the same place would be the best thing for me, and I had the preconception that sixth form was just better than other options. I left when I realised that my passions lay outside of A-Levels. At college, I can study business in more detail (and for the same credit as my three A-Levels), and I can direct all my eff orts into something I enjoy. My passion for the subject really drives me to do well.“Tom Little, Business

“Our tutors are enthusiastic, professional, fun and treat us like adults. The work placementsare the best way of getting proper work experience. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a student at Kendal College.“Mille Sansby, Professional Cookery

“My personal experience at Kendal college has taught me a lot of interesting things. One of them includes independence. In college you automatically become more independent in terms of your learning. You have to be able to do things on your own, in your own time. However, the tutors are always available to help if you need them without a doubt.“Amanda Houlden, Art & Design

    Advice From Our Students...

“Choose a subject that you (and only you!) are passionate about! And most importantly; Be yourself. Anyone is welcome. Everyone is accepted.“Joe Stebbens, Film Production

“Visit the college and talk to current students. When I came to the open day, I instantly got a feel for what college was going to be like, and I knew I'd like it here. Also, don't be put off by the distance you might have to travel to get here, as having a bad experience somewhere else because it's closer is not worth it.“Ellen Scott, Art & Design

“Although it is important to select courses with one eye on the medium-term and a possible future career or university place, just remember that it is ok to change direction. People grow and evolve and the college environment is geared towards thinking and learning independently and you are treated like an adult, all of which places you in good stead for life in the outside world.“Michael Hudson, A-Levels

“Don’t worry, you will quickly find yourself settling in, making friends and learning your way about. I've only been studying here for a month and I already feel like I belong here.“Anthony Hargan, A-Levels (History, Geography, Environmental Science)

“Make sure you ask questions so you can gain a full insight into college life and whether the course and college are going to be right for you. Aspire to do great things and believe in yourself.“Toby Ryland, Health & Social Care

Everything we do at the College focuses on our students gaining the skills and experience they need for progression to higher education or employment.

Our courses are taught by industry and academic experts, who have worked in the careers that interest you and/or are qualified to a high academic level.

You will receive comprehensive careers advice and guidance to help you make well-informed decisions about your future plans.

Last year, 190 students progressed to university, and our links with employers have provided a fantastic platform for students to secure higher-level apprenticeships with employers including the BBC, NHS and BAE Systems.

In our last Ofsted inspection, our support for students’ personal development, welfare and behaviour was graded as ‘outstanding’. This included preparing our students for their next step.

“Teachers and assessors provide excellent information, advice and guidance for learners and apprentices, preparing them exceptionally well for their next steps” SOURCE:

“I started my journey at college studying beauty

therapy and then later went on to study photography part-time, and then the full-time Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (Photography). I now have my own successful business - Dressing Up Box Photography, specialising in equine fine art photography.”

Becky Swallow, studied Beauty Therapy and Art & Design

“I'm now working as a Mechanical Engineer at BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness,

working full-time and studying the second year of a degree. I finished a Higher Apprenticeship scheme in September, completing a HNC and Level 4 NVQ over the 3 years, and recently received a regional apprentice award from Make UK. The business fully funds my qualifications and pays me an engineers salary at the same time.”

“I have been a qualified nurse for 18 months now. I have been fortunate

enough to be given the opportunity to take on a Band 6 Junior Sister role, which entails taking on more responsibilities and acting as a leader on the ward. Going to college significantly improved my confidence. It can be daunting managing a team who are older and have been qualified for longer than I have, so being confident in myself has helped me to adjust and settle into my role faster.”

“I absolutely loved Kendal College! The training at college gave me the skills

I needed for Drama School and I graduated from the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts North with a BA (Hons) Degree in Acting. I played Leah Buckley on Coronation Street in 2017, Jack Dee’s daughter in ITV Comedy ‘Bad Move’ and have just finished 6 months of filming for a new ‘Netflix Original’ – Bridgerton.”

    Meet Our Apprentices& Employers

    11 Degrees

“My job title is Accounts Assistant and I’m in my last year of AAT, Level 4. Being an apprentice is very rewarding. Looking back to where I started, I’m amazed at how far I’ve come, the knowledge I’ve gained and the skill sets I have learnt for life. The apprenticeship route has worked out really well for me.“

“Leah has been with the 11 Degrees team for 3 years, joining as an apprentice in September 2017. In that short period Leah has become an integral part of the team, taking full ownership of various aspects of finance while constantly looking for more areas to improve and develop. She has built a solid understanding of the business and wonderful relationships with her colleagues. Apprenticeships are such valuable pathways, being able to gain hands-on experience and building a career while gaining relevant qualifications.“Melissa Parkin, Financial ControllerLeah Mitchell,

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust

“UHMB NHS Foundation Trust works with Kendal College as one of its main providers of apprenticeship programmes. The ongoing and highly successful relationship has enabled us to support staff from a wide range of areas/specialities to complete apprenticeship development programmes. Examples include, Business Administration, Commis Chef, Engineering Manufacturing Technician, Diploma in Healthcare Science, Operations/Departmental Manager and Plumbing. Our apprenticeship jobs are advertised on the NHS Jobs website.“

“I would encourage people of all ages to consider apprenticeships. Make sure you do your research, choose the right apprenticeship for you, have the commitment to see it though and find a supportive company to work for. Many apprenticeships are a great alternative to university and all give you a great stepping stone to any career.“

“Our experience working with Kendal College has always been very good. The team is extremely approachable and very good at staying in touch with us to discuss our apprentice and her development.“

“I have learned a lot on the apprenticeship – including a great deal of business theory such as the external factors affecting a business or organisation. I have carried out a range of analyses on A.W. Jenkinson, including PEST and SWOT (something I’d never heard of this time last year!) and I have also investigated the impact of innovation and change. I’m now confident putting the other theories we’ve been taught into practice, giving me wider knowledge of the business environment. Within the working environment, I have developed my communication skills, both verbal and written. In meetings, I have been able to develop my questioning skills as well as my ability to approach senior staff with queries. The apprenticeship has allowed me to grow in confidence within the workplace and in a business setting. What have I enjoyed? Having an income at the age of 17/18 has been greatly appreciated, and I’ve really enjoyed the freedom to work and study at the same time – and having paid holidays!“

“From our experience, apprenticeships bring out the best in candidates. CVs are words, there is nothing like seeing what someone can actually do in practice.“

Option to ‘Add an A-Level’ e.g. Performing Arts with A-Level English Literature (equivalent to 4 A-Levels)

Theatre and Event Technology programmes enable students to enter the ‘live events industry’ which presents fantastic and numerous employment opportunities: the chance to travel the world; to be at the forefront of a creative industry responsible for iconic events such as Glastonbury and West End Shows; and to support the many local organisations that need the specific skills set of a technology specialist.

Students are given a grounding in the four core disciplines: stage management, scenic construction & set design, lighting (including design) and sound (studio & live). Practical experience is at the forefront of our training. Students support all our internal performance events e.g. Scare at Halloween, children's theatre, and our full-scale end of year musicals. We also support a variety of community events e.g. Kendal Torchlight.

We have an outstanding record of students progressing to leading training organisations including LIPA, Royal Central, LAMDA and Guildhall. Many students have also directly entered the workforce to paid employment locally e.g. The Brewery Arts Centre, The Old

Laundry Theatre & The Platform (Morecambe) and further afield e.g. for Autograph (who supply PA systems in London’s West End theatres), Disney, Adlib Sound and Lighting (Liverpool), and touring with Ellie Goulding, Jack Whitehall and Ed Sheeran as a small sample!

“ I really enjoy the relationships we have with our tutors and the sense of us working with them and them working with us. I love the freedom of expression the tutors give you and their expertise in the various subjects. I love the sense of community here and the independence. I have also had the opportunity to work closely with the Wellbeing Officer, and she shared mindfulness techniques and study techniques with me, and through this I attended a Mental Health Advocacy Day, which enabled me to provide a voice for students and gain a greater idea of how mental health support is working in Cumbria and Lancashire. “

    Meet Our Students

“ I came for an open day and met my tutors and they were amazing, and after that I thought I'm happy to travel

to Kendal because of the quality of the teaching. The college has been very accommodating and I have enjoyed the group interactions and discussions with both the students and the brilliant tutors. I would like to move on to Manchester or Lancaster University and marry my love of literature and psychology by studying linguistics and psychology further. “

    Jerome Fenton

“ The tutors at the college have first-hand experience of what they teach us and can provide us with their expertise and knowledge. I would like to continue to study law at university and maybe even do it abroad! But if I choose to remain in the UK, I would like to get into Oxford or Cambridge, so I am currently working towards that goal. The college has helped me gain more confidence and helped me improve my work. It’s like a community and everybody's very friendly. “

I love working in the Animal Rescue Centre and dealing with the RSPCA and other organisations. The lecturers make me feel very supported in how I learn, and you can talk to staff and students equally and be yourself. “ This is my second year in forensic science, and it's been awesome. We have explored why people do what they do, the stages of a crime scene, and have recreated scenes to investigate, using suits, apparatus and props. The case studies have been very interesting, the practical sessions have been in-depth, and I now get excited when I watch TV programmes and I know what's happened because we have been learning it at college! “Caitlyn Kitchen
