Today’s fast paced ever-changing world means that trying to find our niche can sometimes be really tough. From
high school through to university, we are programmed to narrow our choice of subjects down towards those that will complement the career choice we have in mind. While this is, possibly, a wise move, the imprudent factors are that not all of us know what we want to be when we proverbially ‘grow up’.
When it comes to certain career choices, it’s not always easy to convince your parents that becoming an artist is acceptable and what you want, when they want you to look at becoming a doctor. Ultimately, the choice is yours, but it is important to ensure that the advice that you get on your desired career path gives you no illusions about the hardships and difficulties that you could face, because regardless of the career you chose, starting up is not always easy.
JournalismJournalism is the timely reporting of events at the local, provincial, national and international levels. Reporting involves the gathering of information through interviewing and research, the results of which are turned into a fair and balanced story for publication, television or radio broadcast.
What do beginning journalists do?Journalists who are starting their careers normally do not engage in commentary or opinion pieces. Rather, they cover hard news stories such as community news, courts, crime and speeches by notable people. In broadcast, beginning journalists may also cover pre-interviews and research for senior journalists. An entry-level reporter often does “general assignment” stories rather than stories for a specific topic. General assignment stories are usually assigned to reporters by the city desk or assignment editor. The same goes for a beginning journalist in a broadcast setting. Depending on the type of broadcast media one is attempting to get into, one usually has to work their way up the ladder to positions considered prime and earn their stripes. In the entertainment industry, emphasis is placed on one’s ability to interact with the public and the more appealing an individual’s speech and presentation skills are, the easier it is to climb the ranks towards prime-time spots.

Studying JournalismStudying journalism is not easy whether its radio broadcasting for a radio station or writing for the New York Times. Research and time to make sure you sell yourself in the best manner possible, is always required.
There is a large amount of reading and research involved in journalism and sometimes, the semantics and pedagogy can become cumbersome and boring. The most taxing elements come when one is continuously attempting to keep abreast of changing technology and methods of content uploading and dissemination; however if you want to be a Journalist being in the know and being inquisitive should be right up your alley.
Media today is so fast paced and interchangeable, that it is imperative that the
Journalist know about a variety of multimedia platforms. In print, a journalist now needs to be able to write, edit and form layouts. In film, they must be able to film, edit footage and compile sequences. Uni-dimensional talents are not encouraged and will lessen one’s value immensely. While carrying out research on university offerings, look at most university programme offerings and you will notice that while your concentration may be in broadcast, you’re usually learning about all aspects of that industry and hence most universities also encourage one to pick up minors in other technical concentrations too.
