Kerrang! has a very appealing logo. The way it is written all in capitals gives the impression of a loud effect, this re-enacts the music genre. They have also used a glass shattering effect which disorientates the letters, breaking them apart, this could show that although the artists are in the same genre, they differ and are in competition with each other. The use of the explanation mark and masthead emphasises the importance of the music and how exciting it can be seen as. The aspect which stood out the most when I first visited the Kerrang! website was the strong use of bold colours, the variety of fonts and sizes. The use of different fonts shows how different this music genre is to another style, i.e. – pop. The layout of the website is very well organised. Its clear that during the making, it was taking into consideration the target market being early teens to mid 20’s and information would need to be of a mid content, however the page is not flowing with information. In the designers making this connection, if improves the visual effect and will attract many more users.

Kerrang! use very basic colours which could be seen as symbolising the one type of genre in the magazine, despite the other genre’s, this magazine is based on one. However, the use of different tones of grey enhance the different artists in this genre, In doing this, many different uses will be appealed to the site.

Kerrang! have used white backgrounds to highlight the importance of the articles. This makes the articles stand out and are very appealing to the eye. The limited use of yellow is used as a necessity. In doing this, when it is used, it stands out further than if yellow was used everywhere.

The style of Kerrang! music is generally seen as loud and heavy. Kerrang! have used a lot of black in their website, black connotates mystery which could reflect the music genre.

Kerrang! uses hyperbole by colour

Advertisements

Kerrang! have used these colour schemes in their own merchandise, this shows a strong relationship with the colours and the music as it is very continuous. Also, the fact they have a clothing store will appeal to a wider target market.

Kerrang! doesn't have one main image, it changes, showing different images which represent different artists/issues and sometimes the change in genre.

Kerrang! appeals by using images.

Kerrang! Uses headlines under each picture to appeal to their target audience, these headlines reveal artists/bands and there new releases and offers. Looking at these, I suspect the target audience is early teens who are interested in metal music in various forms, reflecting the various different artists.

and headlines

The online magazine offers goods, e.g. – free downloads and free t-shirts. They use popular bands who are known for this genre of music advertising the offers makes the audience more persuaded into supporting Kerrang!

Kerrang! shows the genre through language used.

The use of the phrase “freaked out” could be seen as expressing how the artists who create the metal, loud music were feeling, which created an effective impact on them creating a loud upbeat to there releases.

Navigation bar insures easy access. Kerrang! have a simplified navigation bar, numbering

each button which allows users to navigate through the site thoroughly.

When hovering over each navigator button, a red highlighted effect appears, this clearly states the page we are about to go into, physical copies are unable to offer this effect.

There are 13 different pages offered to users to view, this shows a wide variety in offers. The effect on the navigation bar, the red highlighted effect and the white font stands out and could not be misplaced or misused.

Online magazine or a physical copy?

Kerrang! have links to their own radio site and TV. This will engage users to use the website more frequently and also into getting friends to use it too.

Kerrang! online has more features and goods to offer than a physical copy. This could be because it is a case of simply surfing the internet and not going to the shop and purchasing the product or the way the website

itself has links to other websites which appeal to the target market all in the same online process.

Kerrang! online offers the use of message board with other people who enjoy the same music genre as you, this is a way of communicating and interacting with people like yourself and meeting new friends

They also promote Facebook and Myspace which are social networking sites, this would also improve communication, whereas physical copies are for individual use.
