How is studying at advanced level different to GCSE?

Independent Learning
▶ Organising yourself for study▶ Practicalities: files, equipment, time for organisation▶ Don't be surprised if you arrive to a lesson without
equipment to be simply sent away again▶ If you do not do the preparation work for a lesson you will
be sent away too▶ We shall record this if it happens and take action▶ Simple level: note-taking and note-making (how? Linear?
Mind-mapping?)
Skills required
▶ Subject level: course units and components: separate files or separate sections.
▶ Contents pages, indexes and glossaries▶ Time Management▶ 3 (or 4) subjects, each with 8, 9 or 10 hours in class plus
at least the same again as independent study, over the two week period.
▶ Extended Project 1 period a week plus 1 hour preparation: 90 hours total for the project
▶ Overall: 30 to 40 hours a week study.▶ Two-weekly plan: stick to it

▶ Most of you will be on a programme of 3 A levels plus an EPQ or Core Maths
▶ You will also have 4 or 5 hours timetabled supervised private study: this is obligatory. You must register. Attendance will be checked.
▶ If not timetabled, we do encourage you to do private study in an approved study area.
The standard programme
▶ Our expectations of you as Sixth Formers can be summed up under the following headings and these are the areas we want you to develop as you go through the Sixth Form.

▶ Your subjects will help you. EPQ will help you. The Tutorial Programme will help you.
LORIC
▶ During the Tutorial Programme, you will be recording and reflecting upon the activities you undertake to develop and demonstrate your LORIC.
▶ You will use the evidence of skills you build up in your UCAS application or an application for a higher or degree apprenticeship.
LORIC
▶ Supercurricular activities are academic engagement and achievement outside the school curriculum, though they could well be related to it.
▶ In order to make a successful application to university, or to a good training scheme, you need to show that you have undertaken such activities, gained skills from them, and reflected on the experience.
▶ Supercurricular activities range from reading and research done to support your learning through to involvement in university taster days, work experience and work shadowing:

▶ The Attitude to Learning descriptions which are in your planner give you a very clear template for successful study: in Sixth Form, we would expect you to be working at ATL 4 or 5.

▶ If you come into the Sixth Form from an ATL background of an average of 3 ATL we shall monitor you closely.
▶ Once under way, we monitor regularly and expect ATL 3 to be the bare minimum
▶ If you average is 3.25 or below we shall take action to support your study
Attitude to Learning
▶ The Rationale:▶ With the move to most having 3 A levels, EPQ offers a
well-recognised and much valued additional qualification.
▶ It will give you additional UCAS tariff points.▶ The skills developed are crucial to success at A level
and beyond.▶ It will give breadth to your profile.▶ It will enhance your attractiveness to universities and
employers.

▶ You will have EPQ one period a week in Year 12▶ For the first half term you will be following the “taught
skills” programme▶ If you are following a 4 course programme of study you
will still be able to do an EPQ▶ The EPQ will be completed in Year 12

▶ Why should you? Importance of “soft transferable skills”
▶ September 4th – last period assembly▶ Range of possibilities: sport, music, volunteering,
drama, sports leaders, literacy leaders, subject clubs e.g. technology, ‘The Student Speaker’ (known as ‘Vocalize’ in 2018-19) etc. etc.
▶ Start your own club or society (e.g. the Media Production Club)
What other opportunities can you take to develop your CV?
▶ Challenge Grades (CGs) will be set: based on statistical analysis of your potential based on your prior attainment and set aspirationally
▶ We shall use the FFT system to do this. This uses a national database of results.
▶ First half term – ATL only, thereafter:▶ Half-termly Working at Grades (WAGs) and Attitude to

Use of the Sixth Form Centre
▶ BYOD means bringing your own permitted ICT device to school to use in lessons and private study.
▶ Policy in your information pack; application forms available in September
▶ We would very much encourage you to BYOD and suggest a Chromebook as a good, cheap device (under £200, some as little as £130)
▶ Teachers more and more using online resources through blogs, websites and Google Classrooms.
▶ You have unlimited cloud storage through Google because we are an education partner (this means you can no longer offer the excuse “I forgot my pen drive” or “My printer isn’t working.”)
Wi-Fi, ‘BYOD’ and Google Cloud
▶ Will have all of our expectations in it so read it carefully when you get it in September.
▶ You will use it to record IGRs and targets▶ It will also be used to record your Tutorial Programme,
LORIC and supercurricular activities.▶ Use the planner to help plan your time at all levels
from the long term to the short term
The Sixth Form Planner
▶ The Sixth Form Home-School Agreement sets out what we expect from you and what you can expect from us.
▶ You need to consider it carefully. You and your parents are asked to sign it and return it to school.

▶ When you start in September we shall ask you to confirm personal details including contact details for parents.
▶ We shall also ask you to provide some indication of your intended post 18 destination: the more focused the better.
▶ We shall also ask for some family details which will help us establish if you are eligible for “Widening Participation” activities run by universities.
Sixth Form Enrolment Form
▶ We shall check your results: if all fine (i.e. you got the grades which will enable you to move onto your chosen A levels) then we do not need to see you
▶ If you NEED or WANT to change then please see one of us. If we’re busy come back later: the SFC will be staffed for the Thursday and the Friday morning
▶ If you do not make the general entry requirement (4 and 5 across English and mathematics, plus at least 3 other GCSEs at grade 4 or above) you MUST see us
▶ If you do not make the requirement for a subject you MUST see us
▶ If you have decided you are going elsewhere please tell us
GCSE Results Day
▶ New Students: please let us know your results by email. Send us a scan or photo of your results sheet. We shall confirm your place by email. If you need to talk to us please let us know: phone or email or come and see us.
▶ The phone extension is 245. You must leave your message on this extension. Do not leave a message on the main school switchboard at any time during the school holidays, including results day: it will not be passed on to us.

to school.
GCSE Results Day
▶ You must collect an information booklet today: you must share the information with your parents
▶ Information about the 16-19 Bursaries is in the letter: financial support for those in need. If you think you qualify you need to pick up a form to apply for the bursary on the first day (September 4th)
Transport▶ the situation for in-catchment buses▶ out-of-catchment buses - you must contact the bus
companies to organise your daily transport
