ASandALevelqualificationshavenowundergonethechangesimplementedduringthenationalALevelreform.ThefirstsetofreformedcoursesweredeliverednationallyfromSeptember2015withthesecondsetofcoursesbeingdeliveredfromSeptember2016.AllASandALevelqualificationsdeliveredatGordon’sSixthFormfromSeptember2017willbereformed.

WHATARETHEKEYREFORMS?

• AS and A Level qualifications have become ‘decoupled’. ASqualificationsarecompletelyfreestanding;nolongerwillstudents’ASqualificationscontributetothefullALevel.ALevelsubjectsretainedforYear13willincludebothYear12andYear13content.

NATIONAL AS LEVEL AND A LEVEL REFORM

• AS and A Level qualifications are now assessed at the end of the course. ModularassessmentnolongerexistsmeaningthatallASandALevelqualificationsarelinearwithfinalpublicexaminationsoccurringattheendofthecourse.Gordon’sSchoolhavedecidedtoretainpublicASexaminationsattheendofYear12for2017-18whichwillenablestudentstoexperience‘real’publicexaminationsbeforethesummerofYear13andbewellinformedwhichsubjectstocontinuetostudyinYear13.

• AS qualifications can be designed to be taught alongside A Levels. ExaminationboardshavedesignedASqualificationssotheycanbetaughtalongsideALevels.

• AS qualifications are exam-only whilst some A Levels will have some non-exam assessment. CertainALevelsubjectswillcontinuetohavenon-examassessmentaspartofthefinalALevelassessment.
