Kevin Hogan Writes... August 2014 operations. The Pierce Team will visit to determine their capabilities and compatibility with our business culture. I can’t mention the names at this time but I can say that these two companies serve two major ports. I am sharing so that everyone knows we are still looking to expand which creates new opportuni- ties for our associates. I would like to wish everyone who has a birthday in Sep- tember, a happy birthday. On behalf of Pierce Distribution, Pierce Procurement, ICP, and Security Packaging, I would like to thank everyone who is celebrating a service anniver- sary in September. I appreci- ate your dedication and con- tribution to Pierce’s suc- cess. A special shout out to John Mullin who will be cele- brating his 10 th Anniversary on September 1 st . To be clear, if John was credited with his past time with Pierce, he would have over 35 years. Thanks John for your continued support and leader- ship. Well, summer is almost over, school will be starting and NFL begins. Signs that fall will soon follow! I was able to visit ICP in Portland recently where it was hot! The office was having air conditioning is- sues but it was alright. I was able to see Steve Cos- tanzo, Jon Munchus, Brett Downey and Randy Can- tonwine. We toured the plant and had some good conversations. I had lunch with Brett and Randy. At night, Jon and Randy joined me for dinner. Busi- ness has been good. I al- ways enjoy my trips to ICP. Donna and I took some time to help our son, Bob Hogan (Belvidere West) get situated in San Diego where he started his new job. We drove down with the car loaded with essen- tials for his place. Donna and Bob went to IKEA to pick up some things to make his place more homey. It was an 18 hour drive that took two days each to get to and from. We believe that we helped Bob get settled in his new place so he can concen- trate on his new job. Recently, Dino McNabb (COO), John Bednar (Executive Manager), Da- vid Frye (Corporate Quali- ty) and Tracy Schmitt (Corporate Safety) have visited our facility in Colum- bia, SC. I know a Safety Audit is coming. Dino, John B., John Mullin (VP) and Jason Smith (Director of IT) have visited Houston to continue to make improve- ments and integrate our two systems. David Frye was also in Ripley review- ing Quality process- es. Jason visited Peoria as well. I don’t mention the Belvidere or Rockford plants because the associ- ates mentioned above al- ways visit those opera- tions. Over the years, Pierce tries to expand our business first through current cus- tomers, secondly through new customers and thirdly through acquisitions. ICP was the last acquisition we have made. We have kind of stumbled through this process since. Tony Chi- odini (CFO) worked with Wipfli to come up with a better way of identifying potential companies. They also came up with a better way to approach them with a better success rate. Well, in less than two months, we have seen better re- sults. Tony is currently in discussions with two com- panies that fit our business model. We are exchanging confidential agreements before financials can be exchanged. Rockford Writes... We recently had auto fill watering devices installed on all our electric trucks and it’s great. Sure there’s a bit of cost to them but if you look at the amount of time

you save and the safety factor, I think it’s a wise investment. No more pulling/pushing batteries or opening plugs to check levels; just pull up, hook up and in about 15 seconds your battery is filled to the proper level in all cells.

I would like to thank and congratu-late the Carraro Department and everyone that helps with overtime when needed. Last month was the most lines shipped and received in well over a year. It was all done so smoothly you would have never known by just watching the work flow. Another notable milestone is the Pierce Procurement SPX ac-count has gone more than a year without a single customer com-plaint. Keep up the great work eve-ryone!

This year is flying by, and so is my vacation time. My family and I have made a lot of great memories this summer. We’ve vacationed in Flori-da and Minnesota. We’ve camped at the Michigan sand dunes and numerous places in Wisconsin. I’ve always been a bit of a tightwad but my wife is finally convincing me to loosen my grip and enjoy life a little more. I know the kids love always being on the move, I just need them to get old enough to start paying their way. (OK, so I might still have a little cheapskate in me.)

Argh Campers… Pirate weekend is always a popu-lar one at Indian Trails Campgrounds. Kids can make a pirate craft at craft time to wear in the parade around the lake. Be sure to get in on the buried treasure hunt. You get to keep all the boo-ty that you find to spend at the candy counter or to put in your piggy bank. The crazy cardboard boat race is the highlight of the weekend. There are an amazing number of boats built to race and everyone has a good laugh. Sink or float, you are all winners to us. Cast your worries away on Pirate Weekend.

Ripley Writes... Congratu-lation to Latrice Dixon as Plant 7’s Associate of the Month. Latrice is a Label Mak-er on first shift and

has been a Pierce associate for over two years. She states she is totally sur-prised to be selected for this hon-or. Nominated by her Line Lead, Todd Rice, for her outstanding smile and helpful nature, she is deserving of this recognition. Do you mean I get the “special parking place” up front for the whole month, she asked? Just one of many gestures our monthly winner re-ceives. Todd went on to explain the real meaning (or hidden meaning) of Latrice’s name – if you drop the first two letters of her first name (L & a) it will leave “t –rice” OR Todd Rice, her favorite Line Lead. (Only Todd could think like this?) After graduating from Ripley High in 2002, (with the hope of attending college and taking criminal justice classes, Latrice worked at a local industry (TN Electroplating) for five years before that plant closed. She is now the mother of three children: 10-year-old Kendal (better known as Duke), 8-year-old Latravious (better known as Fat Daddy), and 5-year-old-Jayla. Duke is a pretty good basketball player who hopes to play middle and high school ball. The sweet little family attends Elam Durhamville Baptist Church. With an active family, Latrice enjoys staying at home and cooking for the kids their special meal of home-made lasagna, corn on the cob, garlic bread followed by her famous straw-berry cake. Sounds great - we’re all waiting for that invitation to join you and the kids for dinner.

Ripley Continues... Fifteen years, WOW, where do I begin? My husband, Jeff, and I set-tled in Jackson, TN in the spring of 1998 with our one and half year old daughter, Bailey. Moving from Memphis to a small quiet town (at that time) was quite a culture shock. By mid-year 1999, all day conversations with a two-year-old began to take its

toll; I was going stir crazy, and we decided it was time for me to begin working again.

I received a phone call one day from the Human Re-source manager from Pierce in Humboldt, TN, Linda Barber. Our husbands worked together and she had heard I was looking for a job. Lucky me, they needed help!

I started working as an office floater, assisting anyone who needed help. Working for Pierce for 15 years, I have worn a lot of hats. I moved from the office to the Receiving/Breakdown floor, worked the Problem Area for a while; had a second daughter, and then a position in Purchasing opened up. I worked in Purchasing for a few years and signed up for the safety committee. Gradually, I began taking on extra safety responsibili-ties helping out assistant Plant Manager, Mark Strawn. As other supervisors changed departments, I was asked to oversee our Tokyo and Komatsu Forklift ac-counts.

In 2007 I was promoted to Quality & Safety Supervi-sor. In 2009, I had the honor of being offered a position as Corporate Safety Director and maintained my exist-ing responsibilities. I absolutely LOVE my job! I get to travel on occasion, meet awesome people I would nev-er have had the opportunity to work with without having this wonderful position, and I get to do what I enjoy. I couldn’t ask for anything better. Working with some of the same people for so many years, you begin to not just have co-workers, you have the pleasure of having an extended family. I have met some very exceptional people who I am proud to call lifelong friends. These friends have been there through good days and bad days. I am a fortunate woman to be a part of this com-pany. I look forward to many, many more years with Pierce Distribution Services.

Tracy Schmitt

OK where do I begin??

Tracy and I have worked together for 15 years! (Boy is she getting old!) In that time we have worked in almost every department in this plant. Purchasing and Payroll, just to name a few. In that time we have shared offices and worked very

long hours together. Needless to say, we have had a few rounds especially when doing inven-tory and when we helped with the move to Rip-ley (spending 18 hours a day with someone who wants it her way and I want it mine does not work out some times). In this time we have had lots of laughter but also lots of tears. When you are employed at one place as long as we have been you make work friends. I am happy to say that it goes beyond that with the two of us. Anytime, day or night, I know she is there for me. She is truly my best friend. I will never forget the time we were doing inventory late one night. We were the only ones in the plant and it was dark. We were tired and we heard something, then we saw our reflection in the window of our office and almost killed each other trying to run. We look back and laugh and say “good times”!!

In the last 15 years, Tracy has worked hard and proven herself. She is our Corporate Safe-ty Director and is fantastic at this job. She takes pride in her work. Tracy has a huge heart! She is so unselfish!

Tra, love you and congratulations on your 15 years with Pierce Distribution and ME!!!

Thanks to Pierce for hiring Tra because that is where I met my best friend!!

Ripley Continues... This was the sub-ject of an email Jackie Freeman recently received from her son, Staff Sergeant Eric Fitz-gerald. Jackie is the Shipping Coordina-tor at Plant 7 in Rip-ley, TN. The proud Mom was so excit-ed to receive the news that her son, who has been in the military for 14

years, would soon be back in the states and especially to be at his home in Prosper, TX the end of August. In Operation Enduring Freedom, Staff Sergeant Fitzgerald has served one year in Iraq and since September 2013 is currently stationed in Afghanistan. The other exciting news that would make any parent proud is Staff Ser-geant Fitzgerald has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal, which is one of the highest honors a military servant can be awarded while serving our Country and fighting for our freedom! Jackie, as well as her daugh-ter-in-law and two grandsons, are anxious for Staff Ser-geant Fitzgerald's return. Jackie plans on making the trip to Texas and is excited and looking forward to re-ceiving her overdue big hug from her son. We are excit-ed for Jackie, too. We would like to thank all our service men and women for what they do and the sacrifices they make while serving our country - God Bless Staff Sergeant Eric Fitzgerald.

Pulling Together at

Plant 7 (Ripley, TN)

Our Plant was excited to learn the news our associate, Cub-ert (Sonny) Bell, Jr., and his

spouse, Maegan, had a 9 pound, 7 ounce baby girl (Danica Grace) on Tuesday, July 29, 2014. This made the couple proud par-ents for the 9th time. Our hearts were broken as we received the shocking news that Maegan has passed away after complica-tions from the delivery. The leadership at

the Ripley plant immediately formulated plans to raise some funds for the Bell family. Sonny is well-liked and popular on all three shifts – cur-rently, he works as Lead Allocator/Scanner on 2nd shift. Associates Carley Strawn and Liz Scott volunteered to coordinate the big event. They are the “go-to” people to make things hap-pen in this Plant and they were magnificent in orchestrating the events on all three shifts. We received word from our corporate President, Kevin Hogan that he would match funds raised by the Ripley Plant in this worthy project. A deli-cious Spaghetti Dinner, as well as a raffle was held on August 8th. Raffle items included Liz’s two homemade wreaths, one jar of associate Jerry Hankins’ famous homemade salsa and chips, one spa gift basket, one car wash gift basket with car washing materials, one “movie night” basket with assorted candy and popcorn, $25 gift certificate to Komatsu’s cafeteria, 10 cakes and pies, two lottery ticket “bouquets” ($20 worth of tickets on each) and a gas bar-b-que grill. Successful – you bet – the Plant raised $1,741.50. With matching funds, the Bell family received a total of $3,481 from their work family. “A BIG” thanks is extended to all our associates.

Sonny shared the following information about his 37 year old wife, Maegan Shantell John. She was born on November 18, 1976, in TN spend-ing most of her time in Memphis, TN. She was the youngest of seven Choctaw children, spend-ing time at the The Chucalissa C.H. Nash Ar-cheological Museum in Memphis being taught how to beadwork by her mother and was blessed to watch her father make beautiful pot-tery. As a young girl, she enjoyed Choctaw So-cial Dancing and Intertribal Dancing. She held several pow wow princess titles for many organ-izations throughout TN. The stay-at-home mom was dedicated to her nine children: Gabrielle, Charity, Savannah, Danielle, Danica, Angel, Cubert III, Joseph and Noah all of Ripley, TN. Mrs. Bell was laid to rest on the Choctaw reservation in Philadelphia, MS. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to Sonny and his fam-ily

Belvidere Writes... We have been very busy here in the office at Plant 8 this month. A couple of employees have taken vacation and we have had to cover for each other. It is so nice to have employ-ees that can step up, and cover for each other. One

of my personal goals is to make sure that the office runs smoothly whenever someone is missing. This means a lot of cross training and not just training but actually doing the job so they can actually do it when needed. This month Brittany Thompson took off for New York (a well-deserved vacation). While she was gone, Ashley Kettner did her job and was amazing! She didn’t have to ask even one question. Thank you, Ashley for doing such a great job. While Cyndie Won-zer was in Alabama (also a well-deserved vacation), Gary Wilson stepped in and did receiving. He did an amazing job keeping up with a very hectic job! Thank you Gary!! I know it is only August but I am going to talk a little bit about Christmas. Yes, I said that word!! A few years ago we decided to have a white elephant exchange. It was so much fun we have continued this tradition every year. A couple of years ago, I had an African violet that was almost dead that I brought in for a gift. Joshua Moorehead was the lucky recipient of this wonderful gift. I thought for sure it was going to die, but Joshua put it in his window sill here at work and faithfully wa-tered it. Several months later it began to bloom again. It has been blooming and growing for almost two years now. A couple of months ago, I had to put it in a new pot. I thought it might die when I changed pots because I know how touchy African violets are. Not only did it thrive but the leaves have grown even more and just like magic more flowers are blooming. I can’t believe how big it is now. I am so glad he didn’t give up on my violet the way I did!! Recently, Dan Yates celebrated his 10 year service anniversary with Pierce. He received a $200.00 Mobil gas card for his accomplishment. We also took him out to lunch to celebrate at Longhorn Steak House. It was the first time I had been to this restaurant and the food was very good. Thank you, Dan, for your 10 years of hard work and dedication. We have a few who celebrated anniversaries in Au-gust…John Gaviria, 3 years, Nick Grenlund, 2 years, Bo Griffith, 2 years, and Sam Martinez, 2 years. Happy August birthday to Bob Beghtel, Bo Griffith, Tom Wolfe, and Brittany Thompson!

Pierce Distribution Services Company

Belvidere Writes... We closed out the month of July averaging 206 lines coming in daily, with a grand total of 4,487 on new re-ceipts and 35,128 pieces. Wow! The numbers are climbing. We are continuing to work hard on our turn times; we’re currently at a 3

and pushing for a 2 to 2.5 day turn. We have a strong Receiving crew and I know “We Can Do It”. Our Team efforts are paying off over the last couple weeks with high productivity lines. Congratulations, Receiving Rap-tors! I would like to take a moment and introduce Yvette Acosta. Yvette is learning how to check in UPS and prepack. We look forward to teaching her new things every day. Welcome aboard, Yvette. This month has been a little rocky with people out sick and a bit of turn over for Receiving. Thank God I have had one associ-ate that really went out of his way this last month to help assist wherever needed. This person has really come a long way since he started in January and has made great strides at being the best at whatever job is thrown his way. This person is David Wakenight. David you are our AOM. I appreciate all you do. Keep reach-ing for the stars David. I’m proud to have you on my Team.

Brittany Thompson

Associate of the Month, David Wakenight [R] spins the price wheel with Cynthia Mena.

Hello from the Inventory Department!

The last couple of months have been slower months for cycle counts, but we have finally been able to get caught up and we closed last month with 0 cycle counts open. Our goal each month is to close the month with only 50 or less open. We have averaged about 60 cycle counts per day and have been able com-

plete them all daily. Our net Dollar Accuracy YTD is 99.997%! I would like to thank Ashley Kettner, Gary Wilson, Tyler Myers, Tom Wolf, Michael Chiodini and Wes Hryszczuk for all of their help getting cycle counts caught up and back on track!

Being slow the last couple of months we have been able to help out in other departments. We have been helping the Re-Warehousing department get new pallet rack as well as cantilever rack set up so we have more room to store our big and bulky items. Our parts are set up in an ABC system. We bin as well as count our parts using this method. We try to keep our A class parts (these are the most active parts we have) by the shipping department and the B (these are slower moving items) and C (these are the non-movers) class parts stored farther away from the shipping department. This gives the shipping department a better flow when they are picking their orders.

I would also like to congratulate David Wakenight on Associate of the month! Great job David!

Dan Yates, [3rd from left] celebrates his 10 Year Service Anniversary.

Honoring Dan on his achievement is L-R, John Bednar, Joshua Moorehead and Jere-

miah Arnold.

Belvidere Continues... Greetings from BDC’s QC Depart-ment (Plant 8) My name

is Wesley Hryszczuk and I’ve been “manning the helm” in the QC area for a little over two years now, and I have to say- I love my job! We’ve been staying busy and just about every day is new learn-ing experience in my position. Whether it’s working in house hand in hand with Receiving, Shipping, and/or Inventory Con-trol, or outside of these walls with the customer via email and/or phone, my days are never dull or the same. But let’s cut to the chase… The main reason I’m writing this article is so I can feature my latest and biggest catch yet! I got a MON-STER 45 lb. flathead catfish on Saturday night, Aug. 9th at approx-imately 2:00 A.M.. My number one pastime is fishing, and I am ex-tremely passionate about it… I try to spend just about every week-end out on the river hunting these flatheads and other species of fish, and it never gets old to me! It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over already, but what fall time means to me, is that it’s just time to start hunting the Walleye instead of catfish! I know all you fishermen and fisherwomen out there understand!
