The Mohawk tribe is located in the state of New York. They have woods. wetlands, mountains, and live by the St. Lawrence River. There climate is very warm in the summer and is cold

in the winter. They had a growing season for some foods like types of berries and vegetables. They also

stored food that they had gathered or shot in the spring, summer, or fall.

Food

The Mohawk Indians ate deer, moose, onions, fiddlehead ferns, strawberries, rasberries, beach plums, beach nuts, lilyroots, cranberries, elder berries, and many other foods. They hunted, fished, grew crops, and gathered berries. They had to eat food according to the seasons. An example would be berries and fruits which ripen in late summer.

ClothingThe Mohawk’s wore skirts, leggings, and moccasins. Women wore wraparound skirts with short leggings and also wore ponchos. Men wore breethcloths with leggings and did not wear a shirt. They wore different clothing for different seasons. Women wore deerskin skirts without a top in the summer and and in winter they wore a full woodland deerskin dress. On special occasions they wore warbonnets and feathers in their hair.

Shelter

For shelter the mohawk tribe lived in longhouses. The longhouses were made from wood and elm bark. The longhouses were their permanent homes. They lived in longhouses all year long. Longhouses can be 200 feet long and can hold up to 100 people or 15 families.

Interesting Facts

The Mohawk’s nickname from their enemies was Algonkian which means “man-eater.” The Mohawks have six festivals each year. The New Year Festival, the Maple Festival, the Corn Planting Festival, the Strawberry Festival, the Green Corn Festival, and the Harvest Festival. Most Mohawk people speak English. “Mohawk”means People of the Flint.
