The Eaglets of Orchard Lake St. Mary's have a tough schedule this year as they look to return to the state championshipgame for the third year in a row. "It's just the tradition. The kids playhard and play tough football week in andweek out and do a good job of it," said St.Mary's Head Coach George Porritt. "Ithought we've been pretty good and givingmaximum effort (during training camp)."
The Eaglets finished last season 11-3,with two losses coming againstBloomfield Hills Brother Rice, includingthe Prep Bowl at Ford Field.
The third loss came against EastGrand Rapids in the Michigan HighSchool Athletic Association (MHSAA)Division 3 title game at Ford Field, mark-ing the third time in four years thePioneers have tasted a state title at theEaglets' expense.
St. Mary's is regrouping for 2011 havingplayed scrimmages against Clarkston,Grand Blanc and Sterling Heights.
The Eaglets' biggest impact player in2011 is senior linebacker James Ross,who led St. Mary's in total tackles lastseason with 59.5 while also garnering 4sacks and 14.5 tackles for a loss.
However, Porritt said Ross — who hascommitted to the University of Michigan— has been dealing with hamstringissues during training camp and that hisstatus for the beginning of the season isunknown.
"We have to have him out there. He'sone of our captains," Porritt said.
Ross' fellow linebackers include sen-iors David Talley (7 sacks), Joe Eroyan (4sacks) and Dylan Zerki (46 total tackles).
Senior Claudio Jeberaeel will head thedefensive line while senior cornerbackCharlie Ciuni will be key in the secondary.
On offense, senior Spencer McInnisand Keith Stonestreet will be the primaryrunning backs while senior GrantNiemiec returns at fullback after scoring13 touchdowns, falling just short of 1,000yards last season.
Senior Dan Clements and junior MattLinehan are battling for the startingquarterback job while sophomore JalenWatts-Jackson and senior Chris Woolenare standing out at wide receiver.

"Josh's tough running style willearn him extra yards and he issneaky-fast to get into the secondary,"Maltese said. "Chuck uses his speed
and size (6-feet-2-inches tall) to makethe big play offensively or defensively.Expect 2011 to be a breakout year forhim."
On defense, senior Austin Billsreturns at tackle, having amassed atotal of 21 assisted and solo tacklesand 4 sacks last season. He will alsosee time at fullback.
"He combines his quickness andstrength and became a force ondefense," Maltese said.
Another player to watch is return-ing junior outside linebacker AnthonyWaite, who had a total of 65 assistedand solo tackles last season. Waite willalso see time at running back.
"Anthony has a nose for the footballand has great instincts. He is anexplosive, tough runner with tackle-breaking ability," Maltese said.

The Eagles of Huron Valley Lakeland have a strong offensive line led by senior guard Zach Fedorko, junior guard Michael Sullivan, and sophomore tackleRyan Kelly, all of whom are returning starters who will be protecting starting senior quarterback Casey Palanca. Huron Valley Milford and is once againlooking to help the Mavericks return toprominence.
"It's exciting and its fun," he said. "Wehave a lot to build on. We have great kidsand they're good to work with and I lovegoing to practice."
After taking over in 2000, Fox trans-formed Milford virtually overnight from along-time doormat to a yearly contender,as the Mavs had six straight winning sea-sons from 2001 to 2006, including a 10-2district championship team in 2006.
Fox compiled a 50-29 record over eightseasons before relinquishing his post toJeff Hill in 2008. With Hill now at RoyalOak, Fox said he'll come with a differentapproach since he last roamed theMilford sidelines.
"A lot of things have changed. In 2000,we were a double-slot, triple-optionoffense. Now we're a shotgun, no-read, no-huddle, up-tempo offense," he said. "Wecan zone and run more than last year andput the ball up 18 to 20 times and not 30."
Last season, Milford started 4-0 only tolose four of their last five games, includingone-point overtime losses to Howell andrival Huron Valley Lakeland, finishing theyear 5-4 and missing the state playoffs fora second-straight season.
With the departure of 2,000-yard quar-terback Luke Johnson, Milford will turnthe reigns over to junior Alex Larson,who was the junior varsity starter lastseason.
Fox said Larson also played on thevarsity baseball and basketball teams lastyear and is ready for varsity football.
Returning to Milford at running backare two seniors, four-year starter WilliamSchoenle and two-year starter BrandonWallace.
The featured tailbacks will be juniorRobert Ritchie and sophomore DanielWallace.
The Mavericks' offensive line willinclude senior Jacob Morton, a three-year starter, senior and two-year starterDoyle Williams, senior James Fischerand senior Chris Bartoluzzi.

The Vikings not only did so with anundefeated division record, they alsowon the KLAA Lakes Conference title,won 11 straight after an opening-weekloss to Canton, and advanced to theDivision 2 state semi-finals for the firsttime, where they fell to Division 2 run-ner-up Lowell and finished at 11-2.
Meyer said his 2011 team is moreexperienced because the playoffs gavehis players more preparation.
"We have a lot of experience return-ing after a 13-game season last year.We're very fast and intelligent," he said.
Returning to start at quarterback issenior Zac Leimbach, who passed for700 yards and 10 touchdowns and alsorushed for 900 yards and 14 touchdownslast season.
Also returning is senior running backKJ Schultz, who has rushed for over 700yards each of the last two seasons.Seniors Curtis Booth and Zach Hill willalso be two running backs that will gettheir share of carries.
Heading up the offensive line will beseniors David Eisenberg, Jared Collins,Charles Sovel and Jurgen Collaku.Junior Mike Dobrowolski and sopho-more Devyn Bogert will be two playersto watch on the line as well.

"We have taken steps to improve ourprogram and will continue to work hardin order to compete in this very talenteddivision," said Kettering Head CoachMike Fras.
Fras took over as Kettering's headcoach last year after spending the previ-ous two seasons as an assistant atWaterford Our Lady of the Lakes. Hewas also a former head coach at WalledLake Northern.
Kettering only won one game in 2010and it came against arch-rival WaterfordMott, marking the Captains' thirdstraight win in the series. NowKettering looks to reverse a trend of 12straight losing seasons.
The Captains' main weapon will behighly-touted senior running backJustin Santana, who rushed for over 800yards in 2010 and is aiming for more thisyear. He will be joined by fellow runningback, junior Alec Spurlock.
Kettering also has a quarterback bat-tle on their hands with junior ChaseKreilach and sophomore Danny Hubbellcompeting for the starting job.
On the offensive line, sophomoreBrett Reynolds will start at center whileseniors Danny Stieler and DaultonArthur and sophomore Matt Okaiye willreturn as starting linemen.
Senior Brett Mortimore will see timeat tight end.
"Our running backs and offensive linehad a good amount of playing time lastseason. But, our weaknesses are aninexperienced quarterback along withreceivers," Fras said. "The players upfront need to be strong and help themout."

After an 0-9 season last year,Garrison knows not many will take histeam seriously, but the Corsairs arelooking to prove their doubters wrong.
The starting quarterback will besenior Evan Underdown, whomGarrison said has a strong arm and isvery accurate.
"We were an option team last year,now we're a play-action team andUnderdown has improved. Thisshould play to his strengths,"Garrison said.
Underdown's main targets will besenior receiver Curtis Nash and seniorfullback Londo Herrera, while the fea-
tured running backs will be junior AlexMoorer and senior Jacob Amell. Garrison said he hopes his offense willbe 50-50 between running and passingthe ball.
Heading up the offensive line will befive returning starters: senior linemenVinnie Cervantes and Chris Saikalis,along with junior linemen Ross Millerand Robert Berden, and senior centerJosh Rieck.
Mott will run a Pressure-8 defensewhich will include senior linebacker DJBurnett, junior linebacker MitchellMcBride, senior safety AJ Goff, andsenior defensive back Oshea Barton.
The defensive line will be led byseniors Ryan Pierce and Jered Irwin.

Mott opened the 2011 season athome against Huron Valley Milford onAug. 26 and will next play three straightgames on the road.
The Corsairs will then host twostraight games against Walled LakeCentral and Walled Lake Westernbefore playing its annual grudge matchat rival Waterford Kettering on Oct. 8.

A couple reasons for that are theteam's new defensive coordinator, MartyCastellon, and greater numbers on theteam, which will allow players to focuson playing on only one side of the ball.

hile Waterford Our Lady of theLakes will have to overcome a
lack of experience and size to haveanother successful state playoff run in2011, the Lakers' addition of a juniorvarsity team this season is a sign thatOur Lady isn't slowing down.
"This means we are getting betternumbers out for football and they willget more experience with playing timeand it will help us down the road," saidOur Lady Head Coach Mike Boyd. "Wehave 56 boys out for football from a poolof about 100."
Our Lady won its second consecu-tive Detroit Catholic LeagueIntersectional 2 Division title last sea-son in addition to making its 14thstraight trip to the state playoffs, wherethe Lakers won their eighth districttitle in 10 seasons.
This year, Our Lady will have toovercome the losses of key playersincluding wide receiver AustinKarbowski, tailback Anthony Caiozzo,and offensive lineman PhilipMarcinkowski.
The featured tailback in Our Lady'smultiple offense will be senior KevinMooney, the Lakers' only returningstarter in the backfield. Junior JakeDoetsch is also expected to get somecarries, along with junior MitchLasceski at fullback.
They will be aided by an offensiveline that includes seniors AdamFigurski and Sean Broderick.
Joining them will be junior centerChris Donohue and junior offensiveguard Andrew O'Bryan.
Our Lady's search to replace MikeSullivan at quarterback is focused ontwo upstarts, sophomore Vinny Pumaand freshman Sal Mastromatteo.
Boyd added that Puma can also dou-ble as a running back whenMastromatteo is under center.
The main targets for either quarter-back will be junior receiver Richie Crossand senior Jake Weir at tight end.
On defense, the Lakers will front a 4-or 5-man defensive line headed byDoetsch and Weir. Junior Garrett Ross,along with Lasceski, Puma and O'Brienwill make up the Lakers' linebackercorps.

The Lakers will then play atHamtramck on Sept. 1 before playingtheir home opener againstIntersectional 2 Division opponentRiverview Gabriel Richard on Sept. 10.
Our Lady's schedule also includes a
home game against Beverly HillsDetroit Country Day on Sep. 17 and anIntersectional 2 showdown at Royal OakShrine on Oct. 9.
