From Pastor Liza

Dear Mosaic Chapel Kids, I’m so excited for you to read this book! We made it just for you, to help you know what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Before Jesus left Earth, He told His followers to “go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,” (Matthew 28:18). But what does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? Another word in the Bible for a follower of Jesus is a disciple. And what’s that? This book will help you understand what it means to be a disciple, a follower of Jesus, and help you show others how to do the same. Your parents also have their own book, just like this. In the coming weeks, you’ll be learning together what it means to be a follower of Jesus! I hope this book is a blessing to you. We love you, kids! You are such a special and wonderful part of Mosaic Chapel. Your Friend, Pastor Liza Kids and Youth Pastor

There are lots of great Bibles made especially for kids! You’re never too young to start reading the Bible. You can read it on your own, or ask a grownup or brother or sister at your house to read it to you. If you don’t have a Bible, you can ask Pastor Liza or another grownup at Mosaic Chapel to give you one. Here are a couple kids’ Bibles we’ve read at our house. Pastor Molly

66 Books of the Bible

Old Testament (39 Books)Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy Joshua Judges Ruth 1 Samuel 2 Samuel 1 Kings 2 Kings 1 Chronicles 2 Chronicles Ezra Nehemiah Esther Job Psalms Proverbs Ecclesiastes Song of Solomon Isaiah Jeremiah Lamentations Ezekiel Daniel Hosea Joel Amos Obadiah Jonah Micah Nahum

Habakkuk Zephaniah Haggai Zechariah Malachi New Testament (27 Books) Matthew Mark Luke John Acts (of the Apostles) Romans 1 Corinthians 2 Corinthians Galatians Ephesians Philippians Colossians 1 Thessalonians 2 Thessalonians 1 Timothy 2 Timothy Titus Philemon Hebrews 2 James 1 Peter 2 Peter 1 John 2 John 3 John Jude Revelation

The Bible has two main parts, the Old Testament and New Testament. Each Testament is made up of many writings, called books. There are 39 books in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. To make it easy to find something, each book has chapters, and each chapter has verses. When you are looking at a verse, the book of the Bible comes first, then the chapter number, then the verse number. Here’s an example:

Mark 10:16

Book of the Bible = Mark Chapter = 10 Verse = 13

Mark 10:16 says, “Then Jesus took the children in his arms. He put his hands on them and blessed them.” When you are looking up a verse or a Bible story, you want to first find if it is in the Old or New Testament. There are a list of these at the beginning of your Bible, along with the page number where the book is found. After you turn to that book, then you will find the chapter, and then the verse.

INTRO: What is Discipleship?

In Matthew 28:18-20, who is Jesus talking to? He is talking to his followers, His disciples! He is telling the people following Him to go and tell more people.

What is a disciple? A friend of Jesus A disciple is someone that follows Jesus, someone who wants to learn more about Him, spend time with Him and tell other people about Him. Anther way to think about it is a friend of Jesus. Just like we like to spend time with our friends, we also should spend time with Jesus. And He wants to spends time with us! We do that by reading out Bible, praying and invited Jesus to be apart of our lives.

“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All power in heaven and on earth is given to me. So go and make

followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spir-

it. Teach them to obey everything that I have told you. You can be sure that I will be with you always. I will

continue with you until the end of the world.” Matthew 28:18-20

8

What is Discipleship? Growing a friendship with Jesus Just like being a disciple is like being a friend, discipleship is like friendship. A friendship is ongoing, everyday you choose to continue a friendship. Discipleship is growing closer to Jesus every day and helping others to do the same.

A friendship with Jesus has two parts = being his friend, and helping others be his friend Being a disciple = me growing closer to Jesus, becoming better friends Making disciples = helping others grow closer to Jesus, helping others become friends with Jesus

Bible Verses on Discipleship Grow with Jesus so you can help others grow

(Hebrews 5:11-14) Always growing with Jesus (Hebrews 6:1-3) Becoming friends with God (2 Corinthians 5:11-21

Jesus is Coming Back The Bible tells us that Jesus is coming back! We don’t know when, but Jesus promises to come back and finish fixing the world. He is coming back. (Hebrews 9:28) The Bible ends just as it started, with God creating a new heaven and a new earth, and being with His people. (Revelation 21:1-8)

Things to Think About Who is someone in your life that you can share the story of Jesus with? What are ways that you can show people you are a child of God with both your actions and words? The Bible says Jesus is coming back. What do you think that will be like?

9

What a Disciple is Like ☺ Celebrates God and the good things he has done

(Revelation 4:11, Psalm 150:1-6) ☺ Listening to God and having peace with what he

says (1 John 5:3, Roams 5:1) ☺ Reads the Bible and uses it as a guide to live like

Jesus (Psalm 119) ☺ Grows fruit of the Spirit in their life (Galatians 5:22-

25) ☺ Loves God and loves others (Matthew 22:36-40) ☺ Wants to be like Jesus (James 1:22-25, 2 Corinthians

5:17, Romans 12:1-2) ☺ Others can see that Jesus is part of their life

(Matthew 5:16)

10

Making Disciples: We Get to Help Jesus It is Jesus who saves people (Ephesians 2:1-8), God calls us to Him (Romans 1:16-17, 2 Peter 3:9), and we get to help God (1 Corinthians 3:5-9, Matthew 9:35-38). We are called by God to go teach others about His love and we get to help Him to reach all people (Acts 1:8).

Things to Think About What do you think it means to have a friendship with Jesus? What are ways you can spend time with Jesus? Read some of the Bible Verses on Discipleship. Which one if your favorite? Why? In the video, Liza says that we are never too young or too old to be a disciple. How can you be a disciple today? What are things you can do in your life right now to grow closer to Jesus and help others grow closer to Jesus?

47

Your Life Tells God’s Story Sharing the hope we have in Jesus may feel a little scary, but we do not have to have the perfect words to be able to share about God. The best tool we have is our own life and story. If we are growing to be more like Jesus, then our own lives will show people God`s mercy, grace and love.

God is Sending You As we understand more and more Jesus’ love for us, God encourages us to tell other people about it. Everyone needs the hope, forgiveness and love of Jesus. The Bible says that we are God’s messengers of that love. What we know, we should share with others. Lots of people don’t know about the love of Jesus, so God is sending us to them.

Bible Verses on Sharing about Jesus Matthew 28:18-20 2 Timothy 4:1-8 1 Peter 3:15 Romans 10:11-15 Roman 1:16 Matthew 9:37-38 Matthew 10:1-8

46

Session 8: Telling Others

“Always be ready to answer everyone who asks you to explain about the hope you have. But answer in a

gentle way and with respect.” 1 Peter 3:15-16

Love Your Neighbor (Matthew 22:37-40) Jesus tells us to “love your neighbor as yourself.” What we want for ourselves is what we should want for those around us.

Who is our neighbor? Our neighbors are the people God has put around us. This includes the people that live next door, our classmates, our teammates, teacher, anyone in our lives. The people that are in our lives are the ones need to share Jesus love with.

Representing Christ with our Actions AND Words People around us should be able to tell that we are followers of Jesus, just by the way we treat others. Along with that they should be able to tell based on how we talk. We should be like Jesus in all we do, with our actions and our words.

The Holy and Mighty God There is one true and living God. He created heaven and earth and everything in them. He always has, al-ways if and will be forever. God is shown in three peo-ple know as the Holy Trinity. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

God is: ☺ Loving (John 4:8) ☺ Without end or beginning, eternal (Psalm 90:2) ☺ All-knowing (Psalm 139:2-4) ☺ Everywhere (Jeremiah 23:24) ☺ All-powerful (Genesis 1:1-31) ☺ Perfect (Matthew 5:48) ☺ Good (Psalm 25:8) ☺ Patient (Number 14:18) ☺ Gracious (Psalm 116:5) ☺ Over all things (Isaiah 44:6)

“The Lord is kind and shows mercy. He does not become angry quickly but is full of love.”

Psalm 145:8

Things to Think About What is special about you? What are you good at? Why did God make us all different? How can we use what’s special about us to help others?

13

One God in Three Persons: Like an Apple Our God shows Himself in three ways: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. They are all one God, but have different jobs. Another way to think about this idea, is to think about an apple. An apple has three parts: the skin, the flesh, and the seeds. The skin is like God the Father because He protects us. The flesh is like God the Son because Jesus Christ took on human flesh. The seeds are like God the Holy Spirit because He helps us grow and share God’s Word.

God the Father: The Skin The creator, ruler of all things, He is all-knowing, all-seeing and all-loving

God the Son: The Flesh He became human to come to Earth. He did more than put on a human suit, He was fully God and fully man

God the Holy Spirit: The Seeds The one who God sent to help us grow and share with others about Jesus

14

Bible Verses on One God in Three Persons Genesis 1:26 2 Corinthians 13:14 Matthew 3:13-17 1 John 5:6-8 Luke 1:35

The Bible The Bible is the Word of God. It was written by his followers but was inspired by the Holy Spirit. This means that God the Holy Spirit helped his followers write down the messages that God wanted his people to have. We can trust the Bible - we believe every word of the Bible is true.

What is the Bible About? The Bible is the story of God and His creation. God created us so that he could love us and be in friendship with us. That friendship was broken by sin, but though God’s mercy and grace God created a way for that friendship to be fixed, though Jesus Christ His Son.

Bible Verses on the Nature of the Bible 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Psalm 119:89 Psalm 119:105 2 Peter 1:19-21 Matthew 24:35 John 5:39

43

Taking Care of Our Bodies and Our Brains It is important for us to take care of ourselves as a part of honoring God. The Holy Spirit lives in us - the Bible calls our body a “temple for the Holy Spirit,” (1 Corinthians 6:19). When we take care of ourselves, we have more energy and can do more to share Jesus` love. We can also trust God with things that we’re worried about. We can pray to Him and ask for help. We can also read our Bibles. And, of course, we should always ask our parents and safe adults in our lives to help us.

Bible Verses on Taking Care of Our Bodies 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, 9:26-27, 10:31 Hebrews 6:12

Bible Verses on Asking God for Help Philippians 4:6-7 2 Timothy 1:7 Romans 12:1-2 Isaiah 41:10

42

We are made for good works (Ephesians 2:10) We are made to love and worship God, and to do good things, like help others and tell people about Jesus. Because we’re all special and unique, we’re all made to do that in special and unique ways. We all get to do things differently!

A Special Role in God`s Family (1 Corinthians 12:12-31) Each of us have a unique place in God`s family! We each have special skills and talents that God wants us to use to help others and worship Him. In the Bible, God’s family is often called “the body of Christ.” Paul uses the example of all the parts of the human body to describe this. Each part if different and has a different job. And each part is special and the other parts need it.

15

Things to Think About When you think about God, what do you think? Can you think of other examples of things that are three and one, at the same time? How does God show fatherly love? How does He show motherly love? What is your favorite thing about the Bible?

Session 7: I Am Special

“But Lord, you are our Father. We are like clay, and You are the potter.

Your hands made us all.” Isaiah 64:8

We’re are Important and Loved As children of God (John 1:12-13), we are greatly valued and greatly loved.

We are Special and Unique We are all uniquely made, meaning we are one of a kind. And we are all uniquely made, to be loved by God and to help be a part of God`s plan to help the world. We all have different skills and personalities. We are special!

Bible Verses on Being Unique Psalm 139:13-18 Isaiah 64:8 Matthew 10:30 1 Corinthians 12:12-31 Ephesians 2:10

SESSION 2: Who am I?

“I praise you because you made me in an amazing and wonderful way. What you have done is wonderful. I know this very well. You saw my bones being formed as I took shape in my mother’s body. When I was put

together there.” Psalm 139:14-15

Humans are God`s Creation When we read Genesis 1, we read how God created all the earth and everything in it. In Genesis 1:26 it says, “Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image and likeness”. We are the only part of all that God created that is make in His image. We are special, wonderful and loved.

18

We have a Spirit from God God breathed life into our human bodies because of that our spirit will live beyond our bodies.

Bible Verses on our Spirit Genesis 2:7 Ezekiel 33:10 1 Corinthians 15:42-58 1 Thessalonians 5:23

We are Made in the Image of God (Genesis 1:26-27) Being made in the image of God is what makes us special and unique.

Our Brains We are able to think about things

Our Hearts We are able to decide what is right from wrong

Our Relationships We are made to be in community, to have families and friends

39

Things to Think About What does it mean to think and act like Jesus? Why would we want to do this? How can we be the hands and feet of Jesus? What does rest mean to you? What does it mean to be a good friend? How can we help a friend get to know Jesus more?

38

Rest is Important God says that it’s important to rest. God tells us to rest one day a week. Even He did this! In Genesis 2:1-3, after he spent 6 days creating the heavens and the earth, He rested on the 7th day. He calls this the Sabbath. There are many times that Jesus also took time to rest.

Good Friends The Bible also says it’s important to have good friends that encourage us in our faith in Jesus. These friends can help us be more like Jesus, and we can do the same for them.

Bible Verses on Good Friends Galatians 6:2 Psalm 133:1 Colossians 3:13-14 Romans 12:4-5

19

We Are: ☺ Created by God and made in His image (Genesis

1:26) ☺ Made n an amazing and wonderful way (Psalm

139:13-16) ☺ Loved by God (John 3:16-17, 1 John 4:19) ☺ Known by God (Psalm 139:1-6) ☺ Children of God (1 John 3:1) ☺ Made with a plan (Jeremiah 29:11) ☺ Never alone (Psalm 139:7-12, Zephaniah 3:17)

The World is Broken by Sin In Genesis, sin entered the world, which caused us to be broken by sin. It also damaged the world. It’s why there is illness and disease. Sin impacts everything in our lives: How we respond to our parents How we treat our friends How we feel about ourselves

What is Sin? Sin is the poor choices that people make that separates us from God and makes Him sad.

20

Bible Verses on Humans and the World Being Broken by Sin Genesis 3 Romans 3:23, 5:12, 8:20-22

Things to Think About Everything in made by God. Name some examples. We are the only thing in creation made in the image of God. How are we (humans) different than everything else God made? Take some time to look at the list of things that the Bible says you are. What do you like in this list? How does it make you feel? When you think about the world or people that you know, do you see examples of how things are broken by sin?

37

Serving Others: Being the Hands and Feet of Jesus Jesus wants us to serve other people just as He did when He was on earth. Being the hands and feet of Jesus means being willing to help others. Helping people is a way we show Jesus` love.

Bible Verse on Serving Others Matthew 20:28 John 13:12-14 Galatians 5:13 Philippians 2:4-5 1 Peter 2:4-5 James 1:26-27

All We Have Comes from God The Bible says that everything we have comes from God (James 1:17). Because of that, we should trust Him and be generous and share the things he’s given us. This includes our time (using it to help people), and things, and our money.

Bible Verses on Being Generous John 8:34-36, Hebrews 13:16 Malachi 3:10-12

36

SESSION 6: Serving and Giving

Thinking and Acting Like Jesus As we grow to be more like Jesus, we should start to have the same attitude as Christ. An attitude is the way we think about something or someone. It’s thinking like Jesus does.

Thinking Like Jesus Includes ☺ Focusing on what is good (Philippians 4:8) ☺ Learning about what pleases God (Romans 12:2) ☺ Working for God (Colossians 3:23) ☺ Humility (James 4:10) ☺ Growing in the fruits of the spirit

(Galatians 5:22-23) ☺ Peace and forgiveness (Ephesians 4:31-32) ☺ Love (John 14:15) ☺ Wanting to tell others about Jesus

(Matthew 28:18-20

“In your lives you must think and act like Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:5

SESSION 3: God’s Plan to Fix the

Brokenness

“But Christ died for us while we were still sinners. In this way God shows his great love for us.”

Romans 5:8

The Justice of God God is all good and holy. Because of that, He hates sin. Sin has broken our world and our relationship with God. Justice means someone getting in trouble for doing something wrong. Because God is all good and holy, punishing sin is part of His nature.

Jesus is: ☺ Fully God (Colossians 2:9,

Hebrews 1:3) ☺ Fully Human (Body: John 1:14,

Mind: Luke 2:52, Emotions: John 11:33-35)

☺ Lived a sinless life (2 Corinthians 5:21)

☺ Serving (John 13:1-14) ☺ Sacrificial (John 15:12-13)

35

Notes

34

Things to Think About What is a Spirit-filled life? What types of things can the Holy Spirit help us with? Read Galatians 5:22-26 on the fruit of the Spirit. How can we share the fruits of the Spirit with other people in our lives? How do we grow in the Holy Spirit?

23

Through Jesus, God Fixed the Brokenness Romans 3:23 says that all people have sinned and Romans 6:23 says the punishment for that sin is death. But we read in John 3:16 “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son. God gave His Son so that whoever believes in Him may not be lost but have eternal life.” Jesus was fully human, and he lived a sinless life. When Jesus died on the cross, he took the punishment for our sin. Through our faith in Jesus, we are given forgiveness for our sin.

Jesus’ took the punishment for sin when he died on the cross. When we put our faith in Jesus, we are forgiven of our sin and reconnected with God.

GOD US

JESUS

24

Accepting Jesus as Our Savior To be saved and forgiven on our sin, all we need to do is put our faith in Jesus. We tell God that we are sorry for our sin (the word for this is repentance), and we believe that Jesus died on the cross to forgive our sins (the word for this is acceptance).

Bible Verses that We are Saved by Faith in Jesus Ephesians 2:8-9 Galatians 2:16 Romans 9:14-16,11:16

I am a New Creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) When we repent and accept Jesus, we are made new, not physically, but spiritually. When we accept Jesus into our lives, God can see us as whole and sinless, not because of anything we did or could do but only because of our faith in Jesus.

Things to Think About When you think about Jesus, what is your first thought? What does it mean that our forgiveness is by faith and not by things we do ourselves? If you haven’t already put your trust in Jesus, do you want to?

33

The Holy Spirit Helps Us Tell Others About Jesus When we put our faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes and lives inside of us to help us. The Bible also says that if we ask God, He will send us more of the Holy Spirit to help Him tell others about Jesus, and help them like Jesus does (1 Corinthians 12:7, Acts 1:8, 2:37-41). This is called the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

How do I Ask God for More of His Holy Spirit? Just ask Him! God wants to give you strength and courage. He wants to give you more of His Holy Spirit to help others. We should ask Him every day to send more of His Holy Spirit to help us serve others, tell people about Jesus, and be part of God’s plan for helping the world (Ephesians 5:18). The Bible even says that the Holy Spirit can give us special skills, called gifts of the Holy Spirit, to help us.

Bible Verses on Holy Spirit and His Gifts 2 Timothy 1:6-7 Romans 12:6-8 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, 28-31 Ephesians 4:7-13 1 Peter 4:10

32

The Holy Spirit Helps Us Be Like Jesus Jesus says the Holy Spirit as “the Spirit of truth, guiding us into all truth,” (John 16:12-15). As the Holy Spirit grows in our lives, he helps us change to be more like Jesus, and to understand how much God loves us and how special we are.

Fruit of the Spirit: Galatians 5:22-23 As the Holy Spirit grows in our lives the “fruit of the Spirit” will grow as well, including: ☺ Love ☺ Joy ☺ Peace ☺ Patience ☺ Kindness ☺ Goodness ☺ Faithfulness ☺ Gentleness ☺ self-control

25

26

“But Christ died for us while we were still sinners. In this way God shows his great love for us.”

Romans 5:8

SESSION 4: Getting to Know Jesus

Everyone who puts their faith in Jesus receives the gift of Salvation, meaning they do not have to pay the price of sin. When we put our trust in Jesus, we are made new in the eyes of God.

Becoming More Like Jesus As we get to know Jesus, we become more like Him! This happens on the inside (in our mind and how we feel) and on the outside (our behavior). This means that as we grow closer to Jesus we begin to think, and act more like Him.

Bible Verses on becoming more like Jesus Galatians 3:20 Colossians 3:5-8,10

We are Part of God’s Family When we put our trust in Jesus, we are adopted into God’s family. We still have the family we live with, but we also gain more family. Other people that have also put their trust in Jesus are our brothers and sisters in

31

The Spirit-Filled Life = Daily Listening to and being Strengthened by the Holy Spirit When we put our faith in Jesus, God sends His Holy Spirit to help us. He helps us make good decisions, be a good friend, and feel good about ourselves. He also helps us to share those qualities with other people.

God’s Spirit = Marked with a Seal The Bible says when the Holy Spirit lives in us, “we are marked with a seal, marking us as God`s chil-dren,” (Ephesians 1:11-14). This is like have a name tag, saying that we belong to God.

THE HOLY SPIRIT ☺ Gives joy (Luke 10:21;

1 Thessalonians 1:6) ☺ Teaches (John 14:26) ☺ Leads (Romans 8:14) ☺ Strengthens and Encourages

(Acts 9:31) ☺ Helps us (John 14:16) ☺ Prays for us (Romans 8:26) ☺ Makes us Holy (Romans 8:16)

SESSION 5: The Spirit-Filled Life

“Those who live following the Spirit are thinking about the things that the Spirit wants them to do. “

Romans 8:5b

Christ. Together we are considered the “Body of Christ,” meaning we work together to grow and share the Good News about Jesus. Just like the human body had many different parts, so does the body of Christ.

Our Church Community Our community of faith, also called our church, gathers to read the Bible together, pray, serve people and worship together. A church is not a building. A church is the people gathered together to worship and connect with God. A church is a group of people who work together and support each other in their relationship with Jesus.

Bible Verses on the Church Acts 2:42-47 2 Timothy 2:42 Colossians 3:16 Hebrews 10:24-25

Why We Sing & Share the Bible in Church We sing to God to show how much we love Him and to give thanks for all He has done, and we share the Bible because when we learn from the Bible, we grow closer to Jesus.

28

Getting to Know Jesus more We get to know Jesus more as we participate in our church. We should also have a one-on-one friendship with Jesus. When we read our Bible and pray, we grow closer to Jesus every day.

Reading God`s Word Reading the Bible (also called the Word of God) helps us to get to know God. When we read the Bible, we learn about God`s love for us. We can find hope and comfort in the Bible.

Bible Verses on Reading the Bible Psalm 119 1 Timothy 3:16-1 John 16:13-15

Prayer Prayer is a way we can talk to God. Matthew 6:9-13 is an example of how we can pray to God. Pray allows us to talk to God about all the things in our lives, when we are happy, sad or when we need Him to help us or others. We can pray at any time or any place, God is always listening to our prayers.

29

Bible Verses on Prayer Luke 11:1-4 Mark 7:7-11 Matthew 6:9-13 Philippians 4:4-9 1 Peter 5:7

Water Baptism & Communion Water Baptism is a symbol of our trust in Jesus. When we are baptized it is our way of showing that we are leaving our old habits behind and starting new ones with Jesus. We usually do water baptism when kids are 8 years old or older. Communion is a symbol of Jesus’ death on the cross. He used bread and a cup to symbolize His sacrifice for us. The bread represents His body given for us and the cup represents His blood that covers our sins. When we take communion (usually a wafer and grape juice), it is our way of remembering that Jesus died on the cross for us.

Things to Think About

What do you like about being part of a church? What types of things can we learn from reading the Bible? Do you ever pray to God? What types of things do you say to Him?
