ALMONDS?In act, Awana missionaries, Tom and Marti

Chance, live on an almond arm — it’s a amily

business, and Tom has lived there since he

was a little kid.

Here are some almond arm acts that I

learned rom them.

1. Almost 90 percent o almonds are grown

in the valley between Bakerseld andChico, Caliornia.

2. Almonds need 200 hours o “winter

chilling” to produce the best crop —

but they can’t be TOO cold.

3. Almond trees are cross-pollinated by

honey bees. (Did you know that honey

bees are dying o and many armers

are concerned about this — including

almond armers?) Can you imagine?

Caliornia almond armers need 1.2million bee hives to pollinate their trees.

I you’d like to buy some bees or your

orchards — a box o bees costs about

$150.00.

4. Bees don’t fy in the dark. They don’t fy

on windy or rainy days either, or when

the temperature is below 55 degrees.

So the weather has to be JUST RIGHT.

We’re at the beginning of the club year. If you would

like your club to participate in KidsPrint by answering

a question or sharing favorite riddles, write to us at

[email protected].

We are ALWAYS looking for kids we can highlight inKidsPrint . Do you know a clubber who has an interesting

hobby, has won an award for something unusual, is

involved in a unique sport or has served the Lord in a

special way? Or you may know a child who has had

a fun or crazy experience. Again, write to KidsPrint@

awana.org. Tell us what the child does and give us the

contact information. We don’t promise to use every

recommendation, but we’ll consider each and every one

we receive.

5. Forty percent o almonds are used by

chocolate companies. (Think Almond Joy®.)

But this number is changing because more

and more people are eating raw almonds

because they’re so good or you!

6. Almond trees bloom in February (white

blossoms), and the almonds are harvested

in September.

7. Almonds are actually “stone ruits” in the

same amily as peaches and plums.

8. Almonds come in many varieties — the most

common are nonpareil, mission and carmel.

9. The land in central Caliornia is similar

to that in Israel — that’s why armers

rom Caliornia and armers in Israel get

together every once in awhile to discuss

arming methods.

 10. Orchard owners get between 15-25 poundso almonds per tree.

Did you know the apostle Paul (in the Bible)

uses the word picture o a armer to describe our

Christian lie? (Look at 2 Timothy 2:6.)

The armer works hard beore he sees results —

and sometimes storms and bugs and other bad

things mess up his crop. He needs to persevere

(keep on going) no matter what.

The Christian lie can be dicult too. Sometimesyou might get discouraged because you’re

getting bad grades in school — because you don’t

work hard enough. Or you might struggle to get

through your T&T handbook. Or maybe you have

a problem with anger or lying, and you want to do

better, you really do.

Like the armer — you need to keep on

going. Depend on the Lord to help you.

The end result is worth it all.
