About KilsaranFor nearly 50 years the Kilsaran Group has been producing a range of quality concrete products in Ireland. In that time, Kilsaran

has become a by-word for superior quality, service and product innovation.

Founded in 1964 by the late Patrick McKeown, we are Ireland’s leading independent producer of a wide range of award-winning

concrete products. In addition to the Paving, Walling and Landscaping products in this brochure our range includes Readymix

Concrete, Trowel Ready Mortar, SilomixTM, Pre-Mixed Bagged Products, Concrete Blocks, Natural Building Stone, Macadam,

Committed to a Greener EnvironmentBeing environmentally-friendly is not new to us at Kilsaran. Over the years we have received a number of national and international

awards relating to our strong environmental practices but we don’t intend resting on our laurels.

This brochure has been printed on FSC certified paper. The Forest Stewardship Council is an independent, non-governmental,

not-for-profit organisation established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests.

Our state-of-the-art plant in Dunboyne, County Meath, has been designed to achieve the highest environmental processing

standards. All our products are manufactured and cured using the most energy efficient technology available today thereby

reducing CO2 emissions. Water is collected, conserved and utilised in the manufacturing process and recycling systems ensure

the elimination of waste.

Our new Lifestyle Display Centre & Showroom has been built with the environment firmly in mind. Innovative ground source heat

loops, a naturally ventilated building, high insulation values and proximity to the main Kilsaran plant from which the main proportion

of material is supplied, add to the sustainability of the building.

World-Class FacilitiesThe Kilsaran Lifestyle manufacturing plant in Dunboyne, County Meath, is one of the most modern of its kind anywhere in the world.

Commissioned throughout 2008 this world-class plant produces the largest selection of superior quality paving, walling and landscaping

products in Europe.

Our new plant allows us to significantly enhance and expand our product range, making more vibrant colours possible, increasing the

choice of finishes and adding new and exclusive product lines to our Lifestyle range.

Quality Control is paramount in our new plant, with a new purpose built high-tech lab for quality testing and assurance. A separate R&D

facility ensures that our product range continues to grow and lead the way.

Service ExcellenceEveryday we manufacture and deliver thousands of square metres of our paving,

walling and landscaping products across Ireland and the UK.

Our customers work with us because we are passionate about always providing

outstanding service, superior quality products on a consistent basis and innovative

solutions at a competitive price.

Our products appear not only in homes and gardens in Ireland but also in its

streetscapes, townscapes and cityscapes. Some of Ireland’s most high profile building

Our Product Promise At Kilsaran LifeStyle we are passionate about the quality of our products. Our Quality Assurance team are committed to ensuring that

each and every product in our range is structurally sound and meets the most stringent quality standards. We promise, that with

normal usage, our products will last for at least 25 years from the date of purchase. We promise that if our products do not meet this,

we will replace the product free of charge. Our Product Promise is personal to the end-user and as such is non-transferable. It is

limited to the product and does not cover installation defects or consequential losses. Whilst the Product Promise confers no rights

other than those expressly stated, your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected.

Landscape Design ClinicsWe are delighted to offer our customers a range of professional design services that will make your vision come to life.

We can offer expert advice on colour and finishes that will enhance and add value to any home or commercial/industrial development.

We were the first company to extend landscape design clinics not only to our own hard landscaping products such as paving blocks,

paving flags, kerbs etc. but also to include soft landscaping. This ensures that our products blend perfectly into the overall design

created by our team of top class professional designers.

Depending on the size and complexity of the project, choose from our FREE GoldDesign service or from our paid services

DiamondDesign and PlatinumDesign.

And then, just add your imagination.

GoldDesign

Another first from Kilsaran Lifestyle, our Gold Design is our FREE service and

is ideal for small domestic hard landscaping projects such as driveways and

patios. All you need do is take a digital photograph of the area from a number

of angles and email those to us at [email protected] and then we do the rest.

We superimpose your chosen paving product or our recommended product

based on the surrounding area and send that back to you within a couple of

days.

Cost : FREE

DiamondDesign

Our professional landscape designers love nothing more than to make your

dreams come to life. Thanks to our Diamond Design package, getting started

couldn't be any easier.

Simply make an appointment and our landscape designer will visit you on site.

Over the course of the consultation (usually between 30 – 60 minutes) the

designer will take area measurements, discuss the most suitable colours and

finishes from our extensive product range and also draw an outline sketch.

Within ten working days you will receive a detailed CAD plan which will be to

scale and also a priced quotation valid for 30 days.

Cost : €185 (inclusive of VAT)

PlatinumDesign

Where your project requires landscaping across multiple areas we are

delighted to recommend our Platinum Design Service.

Make an appointment with one of our expert landscape designers and they will

be delighted to visit you on site. The consultation process (usually between 60

– 90 minutes) will involve them measuring the areas involved and discussing

with you the most appropriate colours, finishes and patterns. Based on these

discussions they will draw an outline sketch of the design which they will take

away and finalise. Within ten working days you will receive a detailed CAD or

3-D plan which will be to scale and also a priced quotation (including a bill of

quantities) valid for 30 days.

BelvedereTM

The riven surface of the Belvedere range of paving flags, its irregular edges and wider joints are

reminiscent of an old courtyard, abbey or cathedral.

The range also comes in a ‘curled’ finish. The process of curling leads to a velvet smooth finish on

the surface. Coming in a pack of four different sizes, Belvedere will create a stunning and unique look

on any driveway, patio or architecturally-designed streetscape or cityscape. Belvedere paving flags

SlaneSlane is perfect when creating eye-catching patterns such as ‘herringbone’, ‘stretcher bond’ or

‘basket weave’. It is commonly used in driveways, patios, garden paths and heavy trafficked areas

such as forecourts, footpaths, shopping centres and car parks. Installation is straightforward and

CirclesCircular patterns add a sophisticated and aesthetically pleasing look to any landscaped development.

Our circular packs come in a smooth and contemporary Lismore finish or our 'aged' Mellifont finish,

ensuring that they fit with any paving product from the Kilsaran Lifestyle range. Circles packs have

ConnemaraTM

With its distinctive appearance, Connemara Walling is a decorative split walling system that is highly

attractive and easy to install. There is no need to use mortar with our Connemara range as blocks

can be simply glued together with our walling adhesive or used as dry walling. The range also

features wall and pier capping. Connemara Walling is as versatile as your imagination.

It is perfect for use in domestic landscape settings to create raised beds, separating one area from

another or small walls surrounding a patio etc. The range is complemented by our new Dolmen

Tactile FlagsTactile paving is used for directional guidance, hazard warning and also to aid the visually impaired.

Tactile paving comes in 5 varieties – Blister, Directional Guidance, Corduroy Hazard Warning,

Lozenge and Cycle-Way Tactile Paving.

Tactile paving is a functional as opposed to aesthetic product and as such the profile and colour of

Clima-PaveTM

The Permeable Paving Solution

Ireland is getting wetter and conventional drainage systems are failing to cope adequately with

climate change.

Our permeable paving solution - Clima-Pave - allows rainwater to travel through the jointing material

placed in the specially designed gaps between the blocks. The rainwater than travels through a

geo-textile membrane (if used) which will filter contaminants from the water before allowing it to

travel through the single size aggregate sub-base and then it percolates through to the soil below or

to where it can be harvested for domestic or commercial use.

In addition to our Clima-Pave range our Boyne (page 34) and Belvedere (page 14) ranges can also

be used as part of a permeable paving solution. Boyne and Belvedere are suited to the domestic and

light traffic markets.

Our Clima-Pave block is suitable for use in retail, commercial and industrial applications where

medium to heavy traffic loading is likely and is available in a standard or Newgrange (shot-blasted)

finish.

Installation StandardLaying paving block or flags is an investment in your home

or development and when laid correctly should add value.

Like any investment, you wouldn't undertake it flippantly.

That's why our paving products should be installed in

accordance with BS 7533 which is the code of practice for

laying pre-cast concrete paving blocks and clay pavers to

suit the relevant traffic conditions.

Construction and Laying of Pavements

For all commercial sites a site study is carried out to determine site characteristics and to examine proposed loadings for the site, a

full design appropriate to the site is then carried out in accordance with the relevant design standard for the product. The depths of

sub base materials will vary depending on site requirements.

For domestic sites, an experienced laying contractor will be able to advise on an appropriate build up for the paving project or

alternatively our Domestic Guide for Design and Construction basics of Paving can be downloaded from our website which gives

guidance on appropriate construction details for pavements. Alternatively, our Technical Department is always available to provide

guidance on this, call on 01 8026300 or email [email protected].

A suitable edge restraint, e.g. kerbing, a footpath, wall or haunched edging is required for all pavements. This ensures that the

pavement itself which is usually flexible in construction is suitably restrained.

The pavement is normally made up of three or more layers

1. The appropriate sub-base material, e.g. clause 804 material in accordance with the NRA

specification. This is the first layer of material laid on top of the sub-grade (subsoil) or capping.

The depth of sub-base required will be determined at design stage and normally varies from

100mm for light domestic use to 350mm on commercial sites. This will be installed in layers

and fully compacted with an appropriate plate compactor or roller.

2. The laying course is normally a natural clean sharp gritty sand, laid moist in a 30-50mm layer

and screeded off to the correct levels. Alternatively, a clean grit may be used. Block pavements

cannot be laid on a cementitious or mortar material.

For Permeable Pavements a specifically graded clean crushed grit is used. Flag pavements

can be laid on either the sand bedding layer or our Patio Bedding Mortar laying course.

3. The surface course is the Paving Blocks or Paving Flags themselves. They are laid directly on

the laying course material which has been carefully screeded to ensure it is at the correct

levels and falls. The jointing material (usually Kilsaran dried jointing sand) is carefully swept into

the joints and an appropriate plate compactor is used to compact the paving blocks fully. Any

joints which are not full after compaction is complete are topped up by sweeping more sand

into them. When Paving Flags are laid on mortar, the jointing operation may not take place for

a few days until the mortar has set. Paving Flags are placed by hand and tapped down using

a paviors maul; a plate compactor should not be used when placing flags. Some slight surface

scratches may occur during laying, this is normal and they will weather away. If this is a

concern, rubber mats should be used when using the plate compactor.

Please note that the Kilsaran Group cannot

guarantee or warranty the workmanship of any

paving contractor or installer.

Over time some of the jointing material may get

washed away. It is essential that this material is

replaced and joints are maintained full. Kilsaran

dried jointing sand should be used for this

purpose.

Aftercare ProductsProtect your investment with our growing range of aftercare products.

Our sealer offers all-round protection. It is a water-based impregnating treatment for concrete paving units.

Without changing the colour or texture of the surface it provides a liquid and oil resistant surface.

Ideal for use on driveways, patios and paths, our sealer protects surfaces from weathering and helps keep

them cleaner by resisting penetration of:

• Water • Air-borne dirt • Food stains • Drinks

• General dirt • Oil and grease stains • Chewing gum • Organic growth (moss and lichens)

In addition to limiting the appearance of efflorescence, our sealer also reduces spalling through repeated freeze/thaw cycles.

A properly sealed surface will make maintenance of the area much easier with reduced need for weed killers and power-washing

equipment. Cleaning frequencies are significantly reduced, leaving you to enjoy your home and garden!

Our sealer is applied by misting onto the surface using a knapsack sprayer. Please Note : Gloves and a mask are required when

applying.

Choosing a ContractorLaying paving products is a skilled service. A paving contractor can recommend colours and finishes from our extensive range

that will complement any home. They can also advise on patterns and complementary products.

When choosing a paving contractor you should use a degree of commonsense before making your decision and ask some

straightforward questions and look for some basic reassurances:

� Check how long the company has been laying paving products

� Ask for some recent references of work undertaken. A reputable Paving

Contractor will be delighted to show off their recent work. Don't be too

embarrassed to make the phone call or to call in person – either way, you

will not regret it!

� Ask for a written quotation before the work commences and make sure

you go through it in detail and asking questions such as 'Is skip hire

included?', 'Have you included jointing sand in that price?', 'What is the

time frame from start to finish?'

� Check if the contractor has Public Liability and Employers Liability

Insurance.

� A reputable Paving Contractor will expect their work to be of the highest

quality and to last accordingly. They should be happy to guarantee it so

ask them to.
