The sale of industrial lands in Marysville to Tyee Homes, begun under the former Mayor and Council last year, was finalized this week by new Mayor and Council.
The 14.8 acres of light industrial lands in Marysville are located just behind Chalet Chev, near Columbia Salvage.
The city will sell the parcel for $175,000 subject to conditions, includ-ing charge to be registered against the property in favour of the Seller requir-ing the Buyer to construct an office/shop building and to subdivide the property; and the installation of one (50mm) water connection to the prop-erty.
Mayor Don McCormick says the covenants are in place to protect the City.
“Our goal is to ensure the property doesn’t sit dormant like the old Wat-kins School property,” he said. “The buyer will need to start construction in a certain time and start the subdivi-sion by next fall.”
McCormick says that subdividing the property and offering a lot with a building should appeal to the type of light industrial business the city wants to attract, and allow those businesses to develop more quickly.

A local triathlete club is hosting a meet and greet next week to promote their organization and recruit new members at the Studio Stage Door.
The club supports health and well-ness, adventurous living and provides fitness and social opportunities for all ages including kids and adults.
Spearheaded by Barb Fode, the Tri 4 Success Triathlon club will meet on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. and in-clude a kids colouring contest, draw prizes donated from local businesses and refreshments.
“We’re having a social community night, and it’s about trying to gather more members into the multi-sport club Tri 4 Success,” said Charlie Coo-per, of RM Events, which organizes the Wasa Triathlon.
“So we like to get all current mem-bers and anyone interested from the community for a fun evening just to get to know each other. The directors will share information on what the club is going to look like this coming year and we’re just trying to re-energize the club and get as many people involved [as we can].”
There are roughly 80 members that are a part of the club, and Cooper is
hopping to use the meeting as a way to gauge the interest of outdoor adventure recreation and connect the various other kinds of clubs in the area.
“We’re trying to tie in our club with all the different clubs out here, from the masters swim clubs in Cranbrook and Kimberley, the mountain bike clubs, freewheelers and Wildhorse Cycling Club, and there’s a Bigfoot run club also,” said Cooper.
“We’re just trying to tie in all those opportunities along with our multi-sport club to present people with lots of training and racing opportunities that are around here.

Target has put a plan in place to discontinue Canadi-an operations, announced the company on Thursday morning, after filing for cred-itor protection in Ontario Su-preme Court.
The company has 133 stores across the country, in-cluding a location in Cran-brook, which employs ap-proximately 200 people.
Mike Keogh, store manag-er for the Cranbrook loca-tion, declined to comment on the announcement, how-ever, a company spokesper-son said closures will begin in the next four to five months.

Ba r ry Co u lt e rThe British Colum-
bia government plans to hunt as many as 184 wolves in an attempt to save five dwindling car-ibou herds, including the extremely threat-ened South Selkirk herd, which ranges through the Kootenays, Idaho and Washington.
The South Selkirk herd is at high risk of local extinction. The population has de-clined from 46 caribou in 2009 to 27 in 2012,
and as of March 2014 there are just 18 left. The Province said in a press release that evi-dence points to wolves being the leading cause of mortality.
The South Selkirk is a trans-boundary herd, and caribou move freely between B.C., Washing-ton and Idaho. Officials from B.C., Washington and Idaho States, First Nations, the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Ser-vice have been working
together on a research project and have col-lared six of the remain-ing 18 caribou to help investigate the cause of decline. Wolves have killed two of the re-maining caribou (11 per cent of the herd)in the past 10 months.
In four caribou herds in the south Peace area, research shows that wolves are responsible for at least 37 per cent of the fatalities.
The province says hunting and trapping
Wolves to be hunted from helicopter to help caribou
the wolves hasn’t worked and that meth-od may even split up the packs and lead to more caribou being killed.
Instead, ministry staff will hunt two dozen wolves in the south Sel-kirk area and another 120 to 160 wolves in the south Peace by helicop-ter before the snow
melts this spring.On April 17, 2014,
the Provincial Grey Wolf Management Plan was finalized and pub-licly released. “There are no plans to imple-ment a general aerial wolf cull, and in fact, the Two Zone Strategy noted in the Wolf Man-agement Plan would
not support a general cull,” the government release said.
It added that wolf populations are plenti-ful and the grey wolf is not a species of concern in BC. The wolf popula-tion for the province is estimated to range be-tween 5,300 and 11,600 with a median popula-
tion of 8,500.“The risk of remov-
ing the number of wolves recommended is very low, whereas the risk to pertinent cari-bou populations of doing nothing is very high.”

“Latter-day Saints” and “Mormon” are no longer to be used by the polygamous com-munity of Bountiful, following a ban issued Monday by the B.C. Supreme Court.
According to an As-sociated Press report, the group run by Win-ston Blackmore is pro-hibited from using those, “any other name that creates confusion” or the “Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints”, the official name of the Utah-based church.
Bountiful is located south of Creston, just north of the Idaho border, and it’s mem-bers follow a funda-mentalist form of Mormonism that al-lows polygamy, which the mainstream
church banned in 1890.
Blackmore was charged in August with practicing polyg-amy — the indictment alleges he has 24 wives — and is sched-uled to appear on Jan. 29 in Creston Law Courts, when he and
three others will de-cide whether they wants a trial by judge or jury.
He will be joined in court by James Oler, also charged with po-lygamy, and Brandon and Emily (Crossfield) Blackmore, charged with unlawfully re-
moving a child under 16 from Canada with the intent that an of-fence of a sexual na-ture would be com-mitted outside of Canada.
Winston and Emily previously appeared in court Dec. 4 to say they had retained
counsel. Oler, whose faction is said to keep close ties with the fol-lowers of Warren Jeffs in the U.S., sent a sim-ilar message through Crown counsel. They initially appeared Oct. 9 without counsel.

If you know an out-standing volunteer in one of the rural areas in the region, the RDEK wants to hear from you!
Nomination forms are now available for the 2015 Electoral Area Vol-unteer of the Year and, as it has in past years, the Regional District will once again be hon-
ouring one outstanding volunteer from each of its six Electoral Areas.
“Our Volunteer of the Year program recogniz-es an individual or cou-ple from each of our Electoral Areas and gives us the opportunity to pay tribute to them and to all the volunteers who give selflessly to contribute to the spirit,
culture and people of their communities,” says RDEK Board Chair, Rob Gay.
Nominees must be a resident of an Electoral Area and make volun-tary contributions to the spirit, culture or people of the community.
Nomination forms can be filled out or downloaded from the
RDEK website (www.rdek.bc.ca) and can also be picked up at the Cranbrook and Colum-bia Valley RDEK offices, from the Electoral Area Advisory Commissions and various Communi-ty Associations.
The deadline for nominations is Febru-ary 6, 2015.

B.C.’s Mining Minister Bill Bennett, Gavin C. Dirom, CEO, Association for Mineral Exploration British Columbia (AMEBC), Karina Briño , President and CEO of the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) join representatives from British Columbia’s mining industry at the Toronto Stock Exchange ringing in a new year for mining in British Columbia. While in Toronto, Bennett delivered a key note speech to the Toronto Regional Board of Trade where he told a large group of investors, explorers, developers, lawyers and large banking firms that B.C.’s untapped resources offer some of the best investment opportunities for resource develop-ment over the coming decade and beyond.

From Page 1“We also don’t yet
know when each store will close, but it will vary by store,” said Molly Snyder. “The stores will all likely be closed within 16-20 weeks. And we don’t provide details on spe-cific store locations, but I can confirm that none of the stores were prof-itable.”
It’s a stark turn-around after only two years in operation, when the company—to much fanfare—an-nounced it was ex-panding into Canada. The Cranbrook loca-tion in the Tamarack Centre opened up on May 7, 2013 after com-pleting renovations in a space previously occu-pied by Zellers.
“When I joined Tar-get, I promised our team and shareholders that I would take a hard look at our business and operations in an effort to improve our performance and transform our compa-

ny,” said Brian Cornell, Target Corporation CEO, in a press release.
“After a thorough re-view of our Canadian performance and care-ful consideration of the implications of all op-tions, we were unable to find a realistic scenario that would get Target Canada to profitability
until at least 2021. Per-sonally, this was a very difficult decision, but it was the right decision for our company.”
No dates have been provided for store clo-sures, but Target is pro-viding $70 million for 16 weeks of compensation, including wages and benefits, to 17,600 em-
ployees across the country.
“The Target Canada team has worked tire-lessly to improve the fundamentals, fix oper-ations and build a deep-er relationship with our guests. We hoped that these efforts in Canada would lead to a success-ful holiday season, but
we did not see the re-quired step-change in our holiday perfor-mance,” said Cornell. “There is no doubt that the next several weeks will be difficult, but we will make every effort to handle our exit in an ap-propriate and orderly way.”
Target Corporation expects to report rough-ly $5.4 billion of pre-tax losses on discontinued operations in the fourth quarter of 2014, driven primarily by the write-down of the company’s investments in Canada.

In my last two columns, I’ve written about people or events which serve to make life better and
more bearable. There is so much pain and darkness in life that sometimes we need to look diligently for inspiration in the daily round of living.
As I wrote in my first column, I do this because I believe deeply that this is how God works in the world—through ordi-nary men, women and chil-dren who seek to make a difference. I don’t look for the miraculous. Rather, I am learning to look in all the ordinary nooks and crannies of life to see moments of hope and times of joy.
The Danish philosopher Soren Kierke-gaard once defined a saint as someone “whose life manages to be a cranny through which the infinite peeps.” That’s what I’m talking about—ordinary people through which mystery shines.
Leonard Cohn also has a brilliant line in his poem “Anthem”: “Forget your per-fect offering, there is a crack in every-thing, that’s how the light gets in.”
Through the cracks in our lives, the divine infinite manages to peep into the world. In our brokenness, the light of wholeness and justice shines. This, for me, is the work of God, God at work in us.
Let me give one more example. Vedran Smailovic was the principal cellist of the Sarajevo Opera Orchestra and was widely recognized as an exceptionally talented musician.
On May 27, 1992, at 4 pm, in the midst
of one of the most horrifying civil wars in recent history, a mortar shell dropped in the middle of Sarajevo, hitting a line of people who were waiting to pick up their daily bread ration. Twenty–two people were killed, and many more injured.
Smailovic’s small apartment was across the square from where the bomb
dropped. He looked out of his window to find flesh, blood, bone, and rubble splattered over the area. It was the moment he knew he had had enough.
He was enraged; but he also felt helpless to do any-
thing about the violence tearing his land apart. What could he do to stop the war? He could think of nothing, yet he also knew he couldn’t just stand by and do nothing. By dawn the next day, he had decided to do what he knew best.
Every afternoon after that at 4 pm, Smailovic walked to the middle of the street where the massacre had occurred. He was dressed formally, as for a perfor-mance. He sat on a battered camp stool placed in the crater made by the shell, his cello in his hand, playing music. Mortar shells and bullets flew all around him, yet he played on, a symbol of hope in a des-perate place.
For 22 days, one for each of the people killed, Smailovic played in the same spot. He played to ruined homes, smouldering fires, scared people hiding in basements. He played for human dignity that is the first casualty in war. Ultimately, he played for life, for peace, and for the possibility of
hope that exists even in the darkest hour. Asked by a journalist whether he was not crazy doing what he was doing, Smailovic replied: “You ask me am I crazy for play-ing the cello; why do you not ask if they are not crazy for shelling Sarajevo?”
Smailovic continued to play his music until December 1993, in graveyards and bombsites. He had decided to “daily offer a musical prayer for peace.” He became a powerful symbol of hope.
Smailovic, and all the others I’ve men-tioned, and all those who live in such powerful hope, remind me of the short poem by Howard Thurston:
“When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with their flocks, the work of Christmas begins:to find the lost,to heal the broken,to feed the hungry,to release the prisoner,to rebuild the nations,to bring peace among the people,to make music in the heart.”
Whether or not we believe in God, whether we agree in our different beliefs or not, my prayer is that we may all be part of this hopeful, powerful task of finishing the work of Christmas, all of us making music in the heart … and in the world.

As of Aug., 2014, the only remaining evidence of the former Rex Theatre was the Caloric heating floor vent in the middle of the room. It was likely added during renovations in 1921 - Cameron
November 27, 1913, marked the first anniver-sary of the opening of
the Rex Theatre at No. 17, Nor-bury Avenue.
Built by local contractor George Leask as the first true movie theatre in the city, the-atre manager A. A. Johnson, on behalf of the Johnson Brothers, marked the occasion by thank-ing the public of Cranbrook for their patronage of the past year.
By that time the film indus-try, only a few years earlier little more than a novelty, had made great strides. The year 1913 saw the young community of Holly-wood boasting over 15 film stu-dios featuring young stars such as Lon Chaney, John Barry-more, Lillian Gish and Harold Lloyd. On a local note, the Rex Theatre inaugurated numerous features in its first year includ-ing proper ventilation with nu-merous well-lit exits, an asbes-tos-lined-fire-proof projection booth, the local four-piece Rex Orchestra — the highest paid orchestra in the Kootenays, ac-cording to Mr. Johnson — ac-companying seven nightly shows and four matinees per week, and, perhaps most nota-bly, a new projection machine which converted AC electric current to DC, thus doing away with the constant “flicker” of the movies on the screen.
A thirty-foot electric sign on the front of the Rex added a “citified appearance” to Nor-bury Avenue and the crowds continued to pour in.
The Rex Orchestra broad-ened its bases by playing danc-es and socials at other venues and thus became among the first (and possibly among the last) steadily employed bands in Cranbrook. Highest paid or not, they were replaced the fol-lowing year by Mrs. Wallinger’s Orchestra, not too long after local Sheriff Morris served pa-pers on the Johnson Brothers on behalf of owner George Leask, demanding unpaid rent. It appears things were not all rosy in movie land, certainly not for A.A. Johnson.
Things were patched up the following month, just in time for Mr. Johnson to have his hands severely bitten while at-tempting to remove a dog from the premises. In August, 1915, Johnson was accused of inde-cent assault upon his 14-year-old daughter and, unwilling or unable to provide the $900 bail, found himself languishing in a jail cell just up the block in City Hall. The anger and disgust felt
by many did not seem to extin-guish the public desire to catch the latest flick.
Mr. Johnson disappeared from the scene soon thereafter, replaced by various managers over the ensuing years. The the-atre also saw frequent use for daytime meetings such as oc-curred in November, 1914, when Dr. Spencer addressed a male-only gathering on “Cran-brook’s Four Greatest Institu-tions.” Sadly, the institutions in question were not named. They may have included the fairer sex, one way or another.
Throughout the ensuing war years the theatre saw many en-tertainments and fund-raisers in honour of the boys already overseas or headed in that di-rection. Empire (Victoria) Day traditionally saw a large gather-ing of children in front of the old courthouse at the east end of Baker Street, where they were addressed by prominent men of the day and then marched to the Rex for a free patriotic movie following which they each re-ceived a bag of nuts, candy and oranges, a rare treat for the day.
In May, 1921, A. C. Blaine of
the recently formed Cran-brook Theatres Ltd., an-nounced the construction of the Star Theatre at No. 25, Norbury Avenue. The Rex re-sponded by undertaking a number of renovations but it was, in the end, to no avail. The Star Theatre (now East Kootenay Realty) opened on October 10, 1921.
When the Rex Theatre was built in 1912, it was described by the local newspaper as “the best moving picture house in the west.” That was not the case by early 1922, when the neighbouring Star Theatre began featuring all the first-run movies, leaving the Rex to show lesser known titles. It heralded the final credits for the Rex; the same modus operandi, it is worth noting, that saw the closure of the Star Theatre when the Ar-mond Theatre was built, and the closure of the Armond when the movie theatre at the Tamarack Mall was built. No matter the price of popcorn, it is safe to say that there has never been room for two movie theatres in Cranbrook.
In October, 1922, the struggling Rex Theatre was purchased by Mr. Blaine’s company and immediately closed down, the final show taking place on October 7.
The year 1922 may have been curtains for Cranbrook’s first movie house but not so for the building. Following the closure of the Rex Theatre the place sat idle until 1924, when the Cranbrook Co-Op-erative Society grocery store moved in. They conducted business in the former the-atre until the spring of 1929, at which point Quality Gro-cery purchased their entire stock and themselves opened for service, becoming a pop-ular fixture on the block for the next 21 years. Robinson Stores took over the building from 1951 to 1955, at which time they moved to Baker Street. The building was then occupied by Hume Electric for many years. Most recently it has been the home of Muri-el and Jane’s General Store until their move to 9th Ave-nue last summer.
As with many of Cran-brook’s oldest business buildings, it would take a large book to cover the com-plete history of the former Rex Theatre and the people who passed through. Suffice to say, if you enter the recent-ly opened 1710 Workplace on Norbury Avenue, you have become yet another flicker-ing image caught by the lens of Cranbrook’s past.

After a 4-3 setback to the Moose Jaw Warriors, Kootenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill didn’t mince words in looking ahead to his team’s next test Friday night against the Prince Albert Raiders.
“We have to be des-perate,” McGill said Wednesday night. “We’re falling behind here. We’re not going to make the playoffs if we don’t get going.”
With four consecu-tive losses clouding the Kootenay skies, the Moose Jar Warriors and Raiders continue to gain ground on the sliding Ice, who hold down the second and final wild-card spot in the WHL’s Eastern Conference heading into Friday’s action.
The Ice hold a three-point cushion on the Warriors, who have strung together consec-utive victories, while the Raiders remain four
points back but with a three-game winning streak intact.
Heading the other di-rection in the standings, the Edmonton Oil Kings have won five of six games, retaking fourth place in the WHL’s Cen-tral division and build-ing a four-point pad ahead of the Ice. Even further up the ladder, the Red Deer Rebels have blasted off five consecu-tive wins to take over second place, leaving the Calgary Hitmen in third.
When asked what he
needed from his players in desperate times, Mc-Gill’s response was sim-ple and firm.
“Our best players have to be committed to playing every shift like it’s their last,” said the Ice bench boss.
Forward and leading scorer Jaedon Desche-neau is pointless over the team’s four-game skid. Zak Zborosky only has one helper in his last six games. Normally steady defenceman Tyler King has logged a minus-5 rating in his
last three contests. The Raiders hold a
2-0-1-0 edge in the sea-son series heading into Friday night, having won 3-2 at home (Oct. 21) before blanking the Ice in a 5-0 victory at Western Financial Place (Oct. 28).
The lone victory for the Ice came most re-cently, a 3-2 overtime triumph Dec. 12.
Friday is the fourth and final meeting of the
regular season between the two Eastern Confer-ence opponents.
After Friday’s contest, the Ice wrap up a three-game Saskatchewan road trip with a meeting against the Saskatoon Blades Saturday night.
Saskatoon has best-ed the Ice twice so far in 2014-15, the most re-cent a 6-4 setback Jan. 10. The Blades’ other victory came Oct. 22, a 5-2 victory on home ice.

With four consecu-tive wins in the bag, the Kimberley Dynamiters look to maintain a sec-ond-place perch in the Eddie Mountain Divi-sion when they visit the Osoyoos Coyotes -- the top team in the KIJHL -- Friday night.
“It’ll be a good test for us,” said Dynamiters head coach Jerry Bancks of Friday’s tilt. “I’d like to have our whole team, but it will be good for the younger players to play against [the Coy-otes] again and to pick up their pace and try to adapt to it. That will only help you moving for-
ward.”Despite seeing for-
wards Sawyer Hunt and Jordan Roy return from injury, Bancks still has a bevy of players in ban-dages heading into the weekend.
Defenceman Jordan Busch and forward Eric Buckley remain day-to-day heading into the weekend and defence-man Jonas Gordon is also inching closer to action. Forward Marco Campanella remains a few weeks out.
The Coyotes and Ni-tros last met Oct. 31 in Kimberley -- a 4-0 victo-ry for the visitors from Osoyoos. Forward Jack-
son DeMatos led the Coyotes with a goal and an assist that night, while goaltender Law-rence Langan was per-fect, turning aside 19 shots for the shutout.
From Osoyoos on Friday, the Dynamiters then carry on to Arm-strong where they will face the North Okana-gan Knights -- the low-est-ranked team in the KIJHL -- Saturday.
“They’re improving as a team,” Bancks said of the Knights. “You don’t want to take them lightly, as Fernie found out [Tuesday in a 5-3 loss to the Columbia Valley Rockies]. You
don’t take anybody lightly. You don’t look at the standings. You’ve got to play every night.”
The Knights have battled to a 5-31-1-3 mark this season and have lost seven consec-utive games. The last time the two teams met, the Nitros cruised to an
8-2 victory Oct. 26 in Kimberley.
Busch led the push, with one goal and two assists in the win.
After the weekend on the road, the Dynamit-ers get a five-day break before hosting the Rock-ies Jan. 23.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You could be combative as soon as you wake up. Whether you are responding to your dreams or just letting go of suppressed feelings, your reaction will take you by surprise. Understand that not every idea you come up with is a good one. Tonight: Be a free spirit.TAURUS (April 20-May 20) A partner could feel challenged by you and shut down. Try to be more understanding of this per-son’s sensitivity. A friend might push you hard to follow his or her chosen path. You’ll gain some insight into this person if you refuse to commit. Tonight: Head out to happy hour!GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Others could be challenging, as they seem to want to head their own way. You will find yourself in a grumpy mood if you don’t let this go. You might be disillu-sioned by a person you look up to. Consider who put him or her on pedestal. Tonight: Go along
with a suggestion.CANCER (June 21-July 22)Remain focused on getting the job done. You’ll be all smiles when you complete your to-do list. Be more nurturing to someone in your immediate environment. You will laugh, and someone else is likely to respond in kind. Tonight: Check out new information carefully.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)Get past some anger involving a partnership or an agreement. This dissatisfaction could sur-round a past association. Allow your mind to drift, and tap into your imagination when dealing with a creative project. Sponta-neity brings surprises. Tonight: Let your inner child out.VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)You suddenly might want to say less and listen more. Pres-sure continues to come from a loved one who seems to feel as though he or she knows more about a key matter than you do. You could witness an unexpect-ed change in someone close to you. Tonight: Head home early.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
You seem to say the right words and touch a key person in your life. Many times, you stand back and watch what others do. Toss yourself into the moment, and worry less about a project left undone. Tonight: Let your hair down, and paint the town red.SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)You could be in a situation that allows greater give-and-take. Do not let a family member nudge you into doing some-thing totally unexpected and problematic. Honor a loved one’s request, even if you are a bit peeved with him or her. Tonight: Use caution with your funds.SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might feel a sudden change in your mood. Know that you don’t need to explain this sud-den optimism. Someone close to you might be very difficult, and dealing with this person could be problematic. Allow yourself to be more sponta-neous. Tonight: TGIF!CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)You know that you are fortunate to have a close relationship with
someone who gives you extra energy just by being him- or herself. You might decide to make an assessment of your other friendships as a result. To-night: Mysteriously vanish. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)Do not get yourself worked up about a money matter. You might not be sure which way to go with an assertive and/or demanding personality in your life. Relax, and reach out to your friends for support. You’ll enjoy being among the crowds. To-night: Let it all hang out.PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You will want to understand more of what is happening with an older relative or friend. You recently might have seen some swift changes occur with this person. An offer could be too good to resist. Stay on top of your to-do list. Tonight: Resist being negative.
BORN TODAYSinger Aaliyah (1979), model Kate Moss (1974), football play-er Joe Flacco (1985)***
Dear Annie: Please comment again about emotional affairs. My husband says this is a bunch of malarkey.
He has been hanging out quite a bit at a local establishment, which is owned by a woman who is rather flirtatious. She can get the men who come there to do little favors for her, and this includes my husband. I also know that he has been confiding in her and telling her details about some problems in our personal life that I would like kept quiet in the community. I believe the conversa-tions he is having with her are the ones he should be having with me.
Many times when he comes home after seeing her, he hardly speaks to me for hours because he is all “talked out.” He says that there is nothing going on and that he is true-blue for me. But I am uncomfortable with the amount of time he spends there.
I have asked him to stop going, and he has cut back from seeing her four times a day to just once. But it is still every day. He reads your column daily, so maybe you can com-ment again about emotional cheating. In my eyes, it is as bad as sexual cheating. -- Angie
Dear Angie: Your husband thinks that if there is no sex, there is nothing “going on.” But if he is turning to another woman to find emotional support and complain about his marriage, he is shortchanging you, his life partner, and could begin to care too much about her. We have said before that giving your emotions, your heart and your inner-most thoughts to someone other than your spouse is a form of cheating. It creates a bond with a third party, allowing that person into your marriage.
But the fact that this woman is a flirt doesn’t mean she is interested in your hus-band, so try not to overreact. Instead, let your husband know that this close friend-ship is undermining your trust in him. He needs to keep those conversations less per-sonal. If the two of you are having problems that need working out, please talk to a pro-fessional together.
Dear Annie: We have 5-year-old twins. A year ago, there was an argument in the fam-ily, and their uncle left town. Our kids were close to their uncle and still remember him.
The problem is, our son still asks about this uncle. We have told him that the uncle moved to another town. What is the best way to explain that his departure may be perma-nent? We don’t think we will ever see him again. -- Missing Him
Dear Missing: You don’t know that this rift is permanent, so there is no reason to give that impression to your children. At this age, they simply wonder where their favor-ite uncle went. Saying he moved to another town is accurate and appropriate. You don’t need to give details. If your son asks when his uncle is coming back, simply tell him you don’t know. Because that is the truth. If you don’t bring up the subject, your son will eventually forget about him. How sad for all of you.
Dear Annie: This is in response to “Over-looked,” the grandmother who was left out of her grandson’s wedding pictures.
My husband and I have been profession-al wedding photographers for 25 years. In recent years, there has been a trend to spend all the wedding money on the showier as-pects of the event and have either a friend or a discount photographer at the wedding. Often, this produces disappointing results, such as out-of-focus images and, in this case, missing pictures of important people. Unfortunately, you can’t get that day back to reshoot.
I don’t believe that the bride and groom intentionally omitted the grandparents. But I do believe they should have hired an expe-rienced professional. -- D.

AssociAted PressCAPE CANAVERAL,
Fla. - An American as-tronaut and Russian cosmonaut are just two months from launching to the International Space Station for an en-tire year. Scientists al-ready are clamouring for additional long-term subjects.
Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko will rocket into orbit in late March from Kazakh-stan. It will be the first time NASA sends some-one into space for 12 months.
Two people are not enough from a scientific perspective, NASA’s space station program scientist, Julie Robin-son, said Thursday. The space agency wants to start collecting data from Kelly and Kornien-ko before making deci-sions on further one-year missions, she said.
Before committing to lengthy trips to Mars and elsewhere, NASA wants to learn how the body fares after a year in space. NASA space sta-tion stints typically last six months.
NASA and its part-ners - Russia, Europe,
Japan and Canada - are considering as many as 12 one-year test sub-jects at the space sta-tion. All but Russia are new to such long orbital hauls.
Medical and techno-logical breakthroughs since Russia’s yearlong
missions from the 1980s and 1990s means even more will be learned this time around, ac-cording to Robinson. The two sides will col-laborate on many of the experiments.
Kelly will provide an especially unique set of
data. His blood and urine samples, as well as other measurements, will be compared with those from his identical twin brother, Mark, a re-tired astronaut.
Last week, space sta-tion program manager Mike Suffredini said
NASA may wait until commercially devel-oped crew capsules are ready to launch astro-nauts from U.S. soil be-fore building on Kelly and Kornienko’s flight. That won’t happen be-fore 2017 or 2018. SpaceX and Boeing are
the two chosen contrac-tors.
Since the retirement of the U.S. space shuttle fleet in 2011, Russian Soyuz spacecraft have served as the only means to ferry crew to and from the space sta-tion.

finished what’s consid-ered the world’s most difficult rock climb say it’s “surreal” realizing a yearslong dream and are glad people were in-spired by their journey up a 3,000-foot sheer granite face in Yosemite National Park.
Lifelong friends Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson talked to Good Morning America on Thursday about be-coming the first to scale El Capitan’s Dawn Wall route using only their hands and feet. They used ropes and safety harnesses only in case of falls.
Jorgeson said, “It’s pretty surreal to wake up and have the climb complete.”
Caldwell spoke brief-ly, saying he lost his voice yelling at Jorgeson, who had been stalled a tough section that took 11 attempts over seven days.
Jorgeson said of the difficulty: “I didn’t want to accept any other out-come but getting up that route.”
Climbers conquer world’s
toughest rock climb

A s s o c i At e d P r e s sKey Mideast mediators - the
United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia - will meet this month to discuss the way ahead toward Israeli-Pal-estinian peace as tensions esca-late in the decades-old conflict.
U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power made the announcement during the U.N. Security Council’s monthly Mideast debate, calling the status quo “unsustainable.” She urged both sides “to exercise maximum restraint and avoid steps that threaten to push Israe-li-Palestinian relations into a cycle of further escalation.”
The meeting of envoys from the so-called Quartet of Mideast me-diators will be held Jan. 26 in Brussels. It follows the council’s recent rejection of a Palestin-ian-backed resolution demanding an end to Israeli occupation with-in three years and the Palestin-ians’ subsequent decision to join the International Criminal Court. Relations also remain fraught fol-lowing last summer’s 50-day Gaza war between Israel and the Islam-ic militant Hamas group, which controls the Gaza Strip, and the earlier failure of U.S.-brokered peace talks.
Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vita-
ly Churkin told the Security Coun-cil that the Quartet, at ministerial level, “should be promptly rein-vigorated.”
The Palestinians have made clear that they oppose further di-rect negotiations with Israel medi-ated by the U.S., saying 20 years of such talks have not produced re-sults.
“We are willing to negotiate, but now in a different way, through an international conference or a collective process,” Riyad Man-sour, the Palestinian U.N. ambas-sador, told a group of reporters last week.
The perilous state of Israeli-Pal-
estinian relations was evident at Thursday’s council meeting.
Assistant Secretary-General Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon “is alarmed that the par-ties are now engaged in a down-ward spiral of actions.”
“Neither the Palestinians nor the Israelis have taken the chal-lenging steps, or made the bold decisions, required to begin the process of reversing the ever-wid-ening trust deficit between the two sides,” he said. “Instead, we have witnessed developments which may unfortunately further reduce the likelihood of talks re-
suming in the future.”Toyberg-Frandzen called on Is-
rael to immediately transfer the estimated $127 million in tax reve-nues collected on behalf of the Palestinian Authority for Decem-ber. Israel froze the funds in re-sponse to actions that will make Palestine a member of the Inter-national Criminal Court on April 1. As a member, the Palestinians will have standing to pursue war crimes charges against Israel.
The Palestinians and Israelis say they remain committed to peace and accuse each other of blocking the road to a two-state solution.
