Kimberley City Council, amid uncer-tainties about the final cost of the project, voted to delay work on the next and final phase of the Mark Creek flume rehab this week. That means there will be no work on the widening

and deepening of Mark Creek through wKim-berley to replace the concrete flume that has reached the end of its useful life.

The City had been awarded federal and provincial grants for two thirds of the project, budgeted at $3.15 mil-lion.

So what happens now? Does the grant money get returned? Is the project just shelved until the City feels com-fortable with the budget and the tenders?

Not necessarily, says Mayor Don McCormick. There are some next steps that will be taken immediately.

“There are two criti-cal things,” he said. “First is moving forward with finding an appro-priate engineering firm to give us a second opin-ion and assess what all our approaches and op-tions may be.

Former College of the Rockies student Dave Butler will soon be travelling to Toronto for a very exciting event. He will be attending the Ar-thur Ellis Gala at the Arts and Letters Club to find out if his first novel, Full Curl, is the winner of a prestigious Crime Writers of Canada award.

The Crime Writers of Canada is a national professional organiza-tion for mystery and crime writers. They have sponsored the Arthur Ellis Awards for Crime and Mystery Writing since 1984. Butler has been shortlisted for the ‘Unhanged Arthur for First Unpublished Crime Novel’.

Butler is looking for-ward to the opportuni-ties his attendance at

Butler shortlisted for writing award

the event may bring. “The gala will be attend-ed not only by crime writers but also by pub-lishers and agents. It is a great connection to the publishing world,” he said.

Once a warden in Banff National Park, Full Curl is loosely based on events that took place during his employment there.  In a departure

from most crime stories, the victims in Butler’s murder mystery are tro-phy animals in the Na-tional Parks. The novel is set in Banff, Cran-brook, Kimberley and Spokane.

“I love the area and love the mountains and I wanted to tell a story about places I know well,” Butler said. “To be able to add an interna-tional slant on it was fun too.”

Having taken a previ-ous Creative Writing course at College of the Rockies, Butler enrolled in a ‘Special Projects’ creative writing course offered by the College. Under the supervision of his instructor, Butler was given the structure and constructive criti-cism he needed to make his book a reality.

“I had this book idea in the back of my head for a few years,” he said. “The course I took at the College was the push I needed to get it down on paper. The feedback I received along the way was both frank and en-couraging.”

Butler, whose day job is as the Director of Sus-tainability for Canadian Mountain Holidays LP, is hopeful the recogni-tion his novel is receiv-ing from the Crime Writers of Canada will be the push needed to get it published.  He is building upon the expe-rience he gained with Full Curl while working on his second novel, which is also crime fic-tion.

“I see Full Curl’s shortlisting for the Un-hanged Arthur as vali-dation that my work has some value and that it is of interest to other peo-ple,” Butler said. “I hope to use this experience, and what I learned from my instructor at the Col-lege, while working on my next novel. I now have confidence that the story will come.”

For the townSmanVICTORIA - Mandatory off-road vehicle regis-

tration is being deferred from June 1 to Nov. 1, 2015.

A press release from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations says the extra time provides additional time for off-road users to prepare for the mandatory registration, while the regulatory details are finalized on both registration and safety.

Full details are anticipated to be announced by early fall, with implementation for both man-datory registration and safety provisions to begin Nov. 1, 2015. In the interim, voluntary one-time registration for operating an ORV on Crown land will continue with the combined cost of the reg-istration certificate and ORV number plate re-maining at $48.

This registration is integrated within the pre-existing structure of ICBC’s motor vehicle registry, reducing implementation costs and al-lowing ORV owners to register at any of the 900+ ICBC insurance brokers in the province.

An estimated 200,000 off-road vehicles are used in the province. To date, approximately 20,000 ORVs have registered under the Off-Road Vehicle Act.

Snowmobiles have been registered in British Columbia since the 1970s.

Voluntary ORV registration moved

ahead to Nov. 1, 2015

From Page 1“Ashes should be

cold to the touch before you leave.”

That is very import-ant, Bernard said. “Over the long weekend we had 27 abandoned campfires. We want to get that down to zero.”

And it’s not just when you leave your campsite for good. Campfires need to be out any time you leave your campsite, for fish-ing or a hike or any other reason.

The Southeast Fire Centre is experiencing drier-than-normal con-ditions and an elevated fire hazard. These pro-hibitions are being put in place due to the cur-rent weather conditions and the long range fore-cast.

The prohibition cov-ers all B.C. Parks, crown lands and private lands but does not apply within the boundaries of a local government that has forest fire pre-vention bylaws and is serviced by a fire de-partment.

The Southeast Fire Centre covers the area extending from the U.S. border in the south to Mica Dam in the north and from the Okanagan Highlands and Mona-shee Mountains in the west to the B.C.-Alberta border in the east. It in-cludes the Selkirk Natu-ral Resource District and the Rocky Moun-tain Natural Resource District.

Anyone found in contravention of an open burning prohibi-tion may be issued a ticket for $345 or, if con-victed in court, may be fined up to $100,000

and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be subject to a pen-alty of up to $10,000 and

be ordered to pay all firefighting and associ-ated costs.

To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, call *555 on a cellphone or 1-800-663-5555.

From Page 1“There could be pos-

sible cost overruns during construction of the flume in the area of BJ Restaurant, as the flume design is within 0.4 of a meter of the building and shotcrete to stabilize the excavation could be needed which was not considered during design.

There is also the issue of BJ’s Lounge, part of which was built on City land, which would have to be removed during construction.

The second critical piece is assuring funding will remain in place.

“I need to follow up on how we keep the grant,” McCormick said. “We are looking at changing the parameters of the grant. The key question is ‘should we be penalized for exercising fiscal responsibility? I have some work to do

there.”Another key is getting

tender documents out by November or Decem-ber. McCormick was vis-ibly annoyed on Tuesday evening as it became ap-parent that changes were taking place after the tender.

“It’s a tender. It’s a fixed price. We don’t change it after the tender is in. And a contingency is to account for unfore-seen events not to ac-count for poor esti-mates.”

As for the report which stated that it would cost the City $386,000 not to proceed, McCormick says he be-lieves there is a degree of interpretation in those numbers.

“We’re not really stopping. We’re doing it in 2016 instead of 2015. We’ll see. I’m not con-vinced those are hard costs.”

In the end, the Mayor

says he is happy with the way it worked out.

“We would have loved to see it go ahead. Everyone wants it done. But I don’t think anyone sitting at the Council table would say they didn’t get to put forward their opinion. It was a good discussion. And I think we did the right thing.”

What’s next for the flume?

Campers are required to have water and a tool on hand to make sure a fire is out.

Public Input On Idlewild Lake

We would like your input on the future of Idlewild Lake and Park. As a result of recent assessments on the dam at Idlewild Lake, the water levels will be lowered to protect public safety.

Cranbrook City Council recognizes the signi cance of Idlewild Lake to our residents and park users, and is seeking funding to replace the dam and restore the lake. The City sees potential opportunities to enhance and redevelop the park during the dam’s reconstruction.

Please provide your input on the future of Idlewild Park by completing a survey on the City website.  Paper copies are available for pick-up at Leisure Services or reception at City Hall.

The deadline for the survey is Monday May 25, 2015.

Southern Ladies take centre stage

in comedy at Centre 64

Submit ted by mike RedfeRn

Five southern ladies, former college friends and members of a col-lege swim team, share

the trials and tribula-tions of their lives when they meet annually in a cottage on the Outer Banks of North Caroli-na. Their revelations are both poignant and hi-larious and are the stuff of which the comedy, The Dixie Swim Club, is made. In scenes spread over 33 years, this play by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Woo-

ten, playwrights of The Golden Girls and other stage and television hits, takes us through four of these annual reunions, revealing the changes in each of their lives.

Kimberley’s Off Cen-tre Players bring this very funny comedy to the stage of the Theatre at Centre 64 for a 5-day run from May 26 to May 30. The curtain goes up

each evening at 7.30, door open at 7 p.m.

The play features Karen Vold-Oaakley in her debut stage role as Sheree, former swim team captain and the

group’s leader, desper-ately trying to maintain her “perfect” life. Joanne Wilkinson plays wise-cracking, overachieving lawyer Dinah, dealing with the frustrations of

her private life. Michelle McCue is pampered and outspoken Lexie, trying to hang on to her looks and youth, and Nola Doiron is self-dep-recating, acerbic Verna-dette who, faced with a dark cloud over her life, decides to embrace chaos. The cast is com-pleted by Michelle LeMay who plays eager-to-please Jeri Neal, who ends up surprising them all.

Director Brigitte Fra-nyo, who last directed Murder by the Book seven years ago, is excit-ed about this all female production. “The ladies have worked so hard to pull together a top notch show,” she says.

Franyo has worked hard herself, also stage managing the show and helping build the set. Assisting behind the scenes are producer Terry Macham, set builders Terry Miller, Lloyd Lancaster, Tom Martin, set decorators Tylene Turner, Liz Adler, along with cast mem-bers Nola and Joanne, property assistants Marge Lasdigne, Marga-ret Moe, and Lannie Clarkson, and back stage crew Jaime Funk.

Tickets for the show are available for $15 in advance from the Snow-drift Café or at the door.

T he coroner’s jury con-vened for seven hours before returning the ver-

dict:“That the said Steven Mor-

gan, Joseph Sengala and Wil-liam Robinson came to their deaths on Thursday, the 22nd day of May, 1902, at or about the hour of 7:30 o’clock in the afternoon, in what is known as numbers two and three mines, situated on Coal Creek, near the town of Fernie … the prop-erty of and worked by the Crows Nest Pass Coal Compa-ny, Limited; ‘That we, the said jury, find the initial cause of the explosion being at a point in number two mine aforesaid, not clearly defined, and that said initial cause extended from the said undefined point throughout the greater portion of Number 2 and 3 mines, coal dust being the conveying me-dium; and we find in conse-quence that the inadequate method of watering and re-moving of the dust left the mine in such a condition to be dangerous…”

The exact point and cause of the explosion may have been undefined but the result was not. For those outside the mine it was a massive blast of fiery coal dust that rose upwards of 1,000 feet above the fan house, the roof of which was never seen again. For Messrs Mor-gan, Sengala, and Robinson it was posthumous justice, little help that it may have been to them. The death of three men was bad enough, but what made this a disaster was the death of the 125 other men at work in the mine that evening. Not all men, for that matter; Will Robertson (so named in the newspaper accounts but likely the William Robinson of the coroner’s investigation), was 13 years old, one of a num-ber of teenagers to die that day. It remains the third worst mine disaster in the history of Cana-da, and that’s saying some-thing, given the extremely dan-gerous coal mining conditions of the day and the regular and numerous deaths and injuries to the miners.

The town of Coal Creek, built along the waterway of the same name, was only a few miles east of Fernie. It came into being in the 1890s, nestled tightly upon the hillsides of a chiseled valley laden with coal and, for a time, housed over 1,000 residents. Little more than log huts at first, it soon boasted churches clubs and saloons, all attended by the Slavs, Scandinavians, Welsh, Italians and English who worked side by side in the

number 2 and 3 mines. It was a gritty, hard-working communi-ty and on that day in May, from fathers to sons, brothers to brothers, boys to men, an al-most unbelievable portion of the male population simply disappeared. Of the estimated 150 workers only 22 escaped.

In a stroke of fate Bruce Stewart, formerly of Cran-brook, exited the mine just mo-ments before the blast to at-tend to some equipment re-pairs. He lived. S.J. Marsh, an-other former Cranbrook man, did not. A faded blueprint in the Fernie city hall archives shows dots representing the men who died as they worked alone, in pairs, in clusters, some seemingly untouched in death, killed by the concussion of the explosion, suffocated or poisoned by the deadly meth-ane gas afterdamp that fol-lowed; others obliterated com-pletely or so badly mutilated as to be unidentifiable and some, it is believed, simply never found. The rescue work began minutes after the blast but was severely hampered by the pres-ence of lingering gases. Rescu-ers went in, worked until they were overcome, were carried

out and revived and went in once more.

Although the company im-mediately halted all communi-cation from the mine, rumours spread and tensions ran high among the citizens of Fernie and Coal Creek, fanned by the fact that the inspector of mines had toured the site two days previously and declared it safe. The Cranbrook Herald report-ed of the fate of Fernie Police Constable Stevens who was said to have remarked that he was sorry that there had not been 200 more men at work when the explosion occurred. The local miners responded by calling at the jail, demanding that Stevens be produced and then, forming two lines from the 500 or so present, forced the constable to remove his uniform and badge and walk between the two rows. He was then escorted to the railroad track and told to head out of town. Whether or not Consta-ble Stevens deserved the ban-ishment he was undoubtedly lucky to be let go unharmed in what was surprisingly the only rebellious act that occurred. Of course, many of those who may have rebelled were dead and

many others in shock. The mere logistics of deal-

ing with so many deaths proved impossible for the town of Fernie and both Cranbrook and Nelson were called upon to supply coffins. The small St. Margaret’s Cemetery on the outskirts of Fernie was quickly cleared of trees as grave after grave was dug and numbered to accept the bodies of the min-ers. Saturday, May 24 -what would normally have been a town celebration of Empire (Victoria) Day - saw over 30 separate funerals performed as coffin after coffin passed through the streets.

The Crows Nest Coal Com-pany agreed to pay all funeral expenses and provide relief against all immediate want and suffering and hastened to re-open the mines (which suf-fered little damage) as soon as possible. The town of Coal Creek remained until the 1950s when the mines were sealed. Today little remains of the col-lieries or the town of Coal Creek where, in one mighty blast, 128 miners were hurled into eternity on that fateful day.

PAGE 6 FRIDAY, MAY 22, 2015

I am a hard–core reader. I read for my work. I read fiction at meal times and bedtime. I even have a book in the car — just in case. I love suspense and mys-

tery novels; they draw me into other worlds for a short while.

I recently picked up the latest novel by Ted Dekker, entitled, “A.D. 30”. It tells the story of Maviah, the outcast daughter of a powerful Bedu sheikh. Born out of wedlock and sold as a slave in Egypt, she eventually she finds her way back home to Arabia and then on to Pal-estine, where she meets a man named Yeshua — the Jewish name of the one we know as Jesus.

I’m not going to say any more about the novel, so no spoiler alerts are necessary. The characters were sympathetic and believable, the story was tight, and the historical research was accurate.

What has given me pause to reflect is a short essay by Dekker at the beginning of the book, “My Journey to A.D. 30”. Dekker tells us that he grew up as “the son of mis-sionaries who left everything in the west to take the good news to a tribe of cannibals in Indonesia. They were heroes in all respects and taught me many wonderful things, not least among them all the virtues and values of the Christian life. What a beautiful exam-ple they showed me.”

So far, so good. But then Dekker narrates a story in

which he gradually began to feel like a fail-ure. His Christian faith seemed … some-how less than what he thought it should be. He writes,

“As I grew older, all the polished answers I memorized in Sunday school seemed to fail me on one level or another, sometimes quite spectacularly. I begin to see cracks in what had once seemed so simple.

“I was supposed to have special powers to love others and turn the other cheek and refrain from gossip and not judge. I was supposed to be a shining example, known by the world for my extravagant love, grace, and power in all respects. And yet, while I

heard the rhetoric of others, I didn’t seem to have these powers myself.

“During my teens, I was sure that it was uniquely my fault — I didn’t have enough faith, I needed to try harder and do better. Others seem to

have it all together, but I was a failure.“Can you relate?“Then I began to notice that everyone

seemed to be in the same boat, beginning with those I knew the best. When my rela-tionships challenged all of my notions of love, when disease came close to home, when friends turned on me, when I strug-gle to pay my bills, when life sucked me dry, I began to wonder where all the power to live life more abundantly had gone. Then I began to question whether or not it has ever really been there in the first place. Per-haps that’s why I couldn’t measure up.

“So I pressed in harder with the hope of discovering God’s love. But I still couldn’t measure up.

“And when I couldn’t measure up, I began to see with perfect clarity that those who claimed to live holy lives were just like me and only lied to themselves — a fact

that was apparent to everyone but them …”My first thought after reading those

paragraphs was, “How sad! How utterly, unbearably sad.”

I remember as a child growing up in a church where the same kind of completely unrealistic expectations were laid on peo-ple. The language of this church, and oth-ers like it (such as Dekker’s) was filled with “shoulds” when the reality of most of our lives is that we can’t. “Shoulds” just make us feel guiltier, more like a failure. “Shoulds” just add to the already heavy burdens so many of us bear. Our best intentions are never good enough.

I am relieved and glad that I have found another way. More accurately, I am re-lieved and glad that another way has found me.

The Christian way is not about “shoulds.” It never has been. To think this way is to turn Christian faith into a religion with rules and beliefs and a narrowly defined way.

But Jesus never came to do that. Jesus — Yeshua — pointed us to a relationship with a loving and compassionate God who sets us free so that we might live a more abundant life.

One of the church’s earliest leaders, Au-gustine, once said “Love God, and do as you please.” It was echoed by Martin Luther many centuries later. The profound truth of this is that as we love God, we will also love what God loves.

It’s a much freer way of living than a life of “shoulds” ever could be.

Colossal gainsCranbrook’s physique & fitness community grows with strong showing at NPAA Canada Classic

Cranbrook’s place on the world stage of phy-sique and fitness mod-elling continues to grow in more ways than one.

The Natural Phy-sique and Athletics As-sociation (NPAA) Cana-da Classic was hosted in Calgary on May 17, with eight Cranbrook ath-letes competing as members of Team Dick-son, coached by Cran-brook-based trainer Laurie Dickson.

“I’m proud of each and every single one of them,” Dickson said. “It was an absolutely per-fect representation of Team Dickson -- pol-ished -- and also repre-senting Cranbrook and area.”

Team Dickson put forth a strong showing, with two competitors advancing to the Inter-national Federation of Physique Athletes (IFPA) Yorton Cup in Washington, D.C., slat-ed for Oct. 24, 2015.

Anael Delisle (tall bi-kini and open bikini) and Rachel Cohen (elite pro bikini) qualified for the world champion-ship, joining Erika Rieve-Palmer (figure) as Cranbrook athletes

headed to Washington in late October.

Corianne Smithhurst was nominated for the NPAA Transformation Award, which is given annually to an NPAA athlete who has shown dedication to fitness while battling and over-coming physical and/or emotional obstacles, in-cluding but not limited to weight loss, weight gain, impairment, ill-ness or addiction.

Additionally, Dick-son was nominated for the NPAA Coach/Train-er of the Year Award.

“It’s a huge feeling of accomplishment on a personal level because I’m not competing any-more,” Dickson said.

“It’s an honour for me to show other people how to implement the tools they already have.”

Dickson was previ-ously named the 2013 NPAA Coach/Trainer of the Year following a long competitive career that saw her claim numer-ous titles on the national and international phy-sique and fitness stage.

According to Dick-son, the process to pre-pare an athlete for a show carries out over a six-month period, which features three phases. First, Dickson

works with her athletes on building muscle, be-fore moving into a lean-ing-out phase. The final phase of preparation sees athletes cut carbo-hydrates while increas-ing protein intake.

Dickson trains ath-letes out of Aspire2BFit Training Facility, which she opened in Septem-ber 2014. The training facility is located at the Prestige Rocky Moun-tain Resort in Cran-brook.

As it stands, Dickson has a waiting list of hopeful clients at her Cranbrook facility.

As a part of her on-going search for a healthier lifestyle, Dick-son will be opening the Beyond Training Cafe in July/August 2015, also located at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort in Cranbrook.

Dickson’s dedication and passion for fitness has inspired her to ex-pand her Aspire2BFit brand beyond Cran-brook as well.

She is slated to open and oversee a brand new Aspire2BFit Train-ing Facility in Salmon Arm, B.C., in August 2015 and plans on open-ing training facilities at other Prestige Hotels & Resorts locations

throughout B.C.“I’ll oversee and

manage, train [a local trainer] according to my training methods, with use of Isagenix as their fuel source,” Dickson said. “It will be really neat. We’re going to go from town to town and duplicate every single one.

“It will be a lot of work, but I’m very fortu-nate and I’m very ap-preciative of it. It will come together.”

Prestige Hotels & Re-sorts has locations in Cranbrook, Golden, Kelowna, Nelson, Radi-um, Rossland, Salmon Arm, Smithers, Sooke and Vernon.

A big part of Dick-son’s philosophy and approach to fitness and a healthier lifestyle comes from her experi-ence as an independent associate for Isagenix, a health and wellness solutions company.

The NPAA Canada Classic, held at the Uni-versity Theatre at the University of Calgary, saw a total of 190 ath-letes compete in five dif-ferent categories -- men’s bodybuilding, men’s physique, wom-en’s bikini model, wom-en’s figure and women’s fitness model.

Soaring onwardDynamiters’ forward Coy Prevost latest to join AJHL’s Canmore Eagles

Taylor rocc aSports Editor

The Alberta exodus continues for the Kim-berley Dynamiters.

Thursday afternoon, the AJHL’s Canmore Ea-gles announced forward Coy Prevost (1997) had committed to the team for the 2015-16 season.

“Canmore is close to my home and looks like an ideal place for me to develop my hockey skills,” Prevost said in an Eagles’ press release. “They don’t have many 17-year-olds on their roster, so if I play well I could play there for the next three years and hopefully earn an invi-tation to play hockey for a Canadian university down the road.

“I can’t wait for train-

ing camp to begin.”Prevost joins forward

B r a d e n Saretsky as the second member of Kimberley’s 2015 KI-JHL-cham-pion Dyna-miters to commit to the Canmore Eagles this off-season.

A native of Kimber-ley, Prevost claimed the K I J H L ’ s Eddie Mountain Divi-sion Rookie of the Year Award after posting 14 goals and 49 points in 50 games during the 2014-15 campaign.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound forward added 11

goals and 19 points in 22 KIJHL playoff games, be-

fore produc-ing one goal in three games at the Cyclone Tay-lor Cup -- the B.C. Junior ‘B’ provincial champion-ship.

“Coy will bring some good size to our team and his of-fensive num-bers certain-ly speak for

themselves,” said An-drew Milne, Eagles’ head coach and general man-ager, in a team press re-lease. “He is a hard-work-ing forward who likes to force turnovers in the of-fensive zone and he has

the hands to put the puck in the net.

“We want to recruit winners to our hockey club to help create a winning culture in the dressing room and both Saretsky and Prevost bring that with them. We are excited to see what these two players can bring to our lineup next season.”

Prevost’s ability to drive the net hard helped the Nitros claim Kimber-ley’s first KIJHL title since the Kimberley Knights won it all in 1980.

Saretsky, a native of West Kelowna, commit-ted to the Eagles on May 8.

The Eagles finished the 2014-15 season sixth in the AJHL’s Viterra South Division with a record of 27-31-2.

For The Townsman

Former College of the Rockies men’s Ava-lanche volleyball player Curtis Stockton recently finished representing his country as a member of the Australian National Junior Volleyball Team.

“I am extremely excit-ed to be given another opportunity by my coun-try to represent them on the volleyball court,” Stockton said. “I think

everyone at College of the Rockies who has been involved in my vol-leyball development over the past three years.”

Stockton and Austra-lia competed at the 2015 Asian Men’s U23 Volley-ball Championships in Myanmar from May 12 to 20, compiling a round-robin record of 1-2 and finishing in 10th place out of 16 teams.

The Australian Junior Men’s Development

Program (JMDP) consists of national camps and inter-national tour for targeted athletes from across Aus-tralia.

The program regularly produces in-t e r n a t i o n a l - q u a l i t y players capable of achieving professional careers and of being chosen for the Senior National Team.

This was Stockton’s

second time represent-ing his native country internationally.

Stockton played right side for the Avalanche for three years, winning several honours during his time in Cranbrook, including PACWEST

First Team All-Star in 2013-14 and 2014-15, PACWEST Player of the Year (2013-14) and CCAA All-Canadian (2013-14).

Following the 2014-15 PACWEST volleyball season, Stockton com-

mitted to the University of Calgary Dinos volley-ball program at the Ca-nadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) level.

“It was amazing to see the growth in Curtis’ game over the three years he played with the Avalanche,” said former Avs coach Steve Kamps. “He improved in all areas of his game and was extremely dedicat-ed in the off-season to continue developing his

physical strength.“Curt is getting the

recognition that he de-serves and playing on the Australian Junior National Team will be a wonderful experience that he can take with him to the University of Calgary in the fall.”

Iran won the 2015 Asian Men’s U23 Volley Championship, with South Korea claiming silver and Chinese Tai-pei earning bronze.

Former Avs volleyball player represents Australia internationally

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Clear through any mandatory errands and details quickly, as you see a special opportu-nity or meeting heading your direction. Others admire your resourcefulness, though they also might be intimidated by it. Treat a family member with care. Tonight: As you like it. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) The recent ease of communica-tion has somewhat withered. You will have to be more per-sistent with confirmation and follow through. A partner could prove to be unusually challeng-ing. Just let this person’s words roll right off you. Tonight: Make it an early night. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You have entered a period where everything flows more easily. You might need to make the first move, and quickly at that. You’ll see a new vision of what is possible. Start sharing it with others, and you will like the results. Tonight: Out and about.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’ll get a second wind as the day ends. Make sure you have tied up all loose ends and you leave with a clean desk. Once you meet up with a friend, you’ll loosen up. You might not have realized how much self-disci-pline you had to use this week. Tonight: Let your hair down. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Your momentum picks up as the day gets older. You’ll sense a dif-ference in others’ moods as well. If you want, adjust your sched-ule to visit with a friend who is having a difficult time. Let go of a need to have situations go as you would like. Tonight: A force to be dealt with. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You might want to assume a lower profile than usual. You have put all your efforts into whatever you were doing this week. Some time off seems more than necessary. Releasing yourself from obligations, even for just a day, revitalizes you. Tonight: Not to be found. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Zero in on what you want, and

don’t let anyone stop you. You are heading down the path to victory, and you know it. Be as clear as possible. Understand what is happening with a child or loved one. Make this person’s wish a reality. Tonight: Where the action is. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Pressure builds, and you’ll be able to reach the goal you have desired. You might want to answer a question a child poses. Be aware of your choices. You understand the power of mystery, but have you exper-imented with the strength of openness? Tonight: A must ap-pearance. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You’ll feel as if you have done your fair share in a partner-ship. On some level, you might be holding your breath to see which way the issue tumbles. Be willing to interact with a key person and clear the air. To-night: The only answer is “yes.” CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You could be on top of a prob-lem without realizing it. You will like the results more if you

lie low for now. Take a walk, and detach from all the mixed messages your mind seems to be playing. Try to maintain a positive attitude. Tonight: The weekend begins now! AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Defer to others while you can. You might experience an in-ordinate amount of pressure to present a topic in a certain way. A friend doesn’t seem to be getting the complete visual of what you are doing. Honor your own thoughts first. Tonight: Let others make the first move. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Take a stand if you feel you must, but with everything that is happening, your action might lose some of its power. Stay on top of an important project. Take your time this afternoon, and don’t rush a conversation with a key loved one. Tonight: Let the world be your oyster. BORN TODAY Author Arthur Conan Doyle (1859), actress Ginnifer Good-win (1978), fashion model Nao-mi Campbell (1970)

Dear Annie: I’ve been seeing (and sleeping with) “Jordan”’ for eight months. We met at the gym, and I asked him out because I had an amazing feeling about him. Since then, I’ve become totally infatuated. He is one of the kindest men I’ve ever met. I thought I saw a future for us. But the other day, Jordan casually mentioned that he needed to change my name in his phone. When I asked what he meant, he said he still had me listed as ‘’girl from the gym.” I couldn’t believe it. We’ve been together eight months! I expressed my hurt and told him that such a thing was very cold. He didn’t seem to think it was a big deal. But, Annie, I haven’t been able to get over this detail. I see it as a total lack of respect and proof of my impermanence in his life, and it means I’m definitely not someone important to him. Am I overreacting? I thought he was actually the one. -- Phony Love Dear Love: You are wildly overreacting. This is not an issue of coldness, impermanence or lack of importance. It’s laziness. When Jordan first met you, you asked him out. You became “girl from the gym” so he would remember who you were. As you spent more time together, he grew to care about you, but editing your name in his contact list required a minor effort that he probably kept putting aside since he knew how to reach you. Now the relationship is important, and he wants to look you up with your real name. The fact that he should have done this six months ago is irrelevant. He’s doing it now. If everything else is wonderful, a better response would have been to laugh and recognize that nobody’s perfect. Dear Annie: This is in reference to the letter from “Sad Mom,” who said a boy in her son’s school committed suicide. She said the cause of death was not explained and there had been irresponsible speculation on social media. I have been in the funeral business for five years. Giving information like that is up to the family. It’s their call. What the school wants, what the other parents want or what is happening on social media is not important to them. They are grieving, and what they choose to say is entirely their business. -- Funeral Home Manager Dear Funeral: We completely agree that details about the cause of death are only to be shared by family members who wish to do so. It is no one else’s business, and the family should not be burdened by others’ curiosity. But in a school, the students’ concerns and fears should not be ignored as though nothing happened. This means acknowledging that there has been a death, allowing the students to grieve and providing counseling for those who need it. Most schools, fortunately, already have such programs in place, and we hope those that do not yet have one will look into it. now she looks like her Dad, but when she gets older I want her to be Eye Candy like Grandpa Stu!

Gordon Douglas Hogg May 18, 1956 - May 17, 2015

Gordon was born in Nelson British Columbia on Friday May 18, 1956. When he was a few months old, he moved with his family to Revelstoke BC. In the summer of 1977, he and his family moved to Cranbrook, BC where they were building a house in the south end. When he finished High School, Gordon got on with the Canadian Pacific Railway where he worked in the shops until his accident in 1977. While dealing with the loss of use in his legs, he lived in Vancouver, BC for rehabilitation which left him confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. While in Vancouver, he took computer and bookkeeping courses. He also enjoyed learning to scuba dive and participated in wheelchair basketball. In 1989/90 Gordon came back to Cranbrook to be near his family and continued to take courses in accounting. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends playing cards, listening to music and having a good time.

Gordon passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday May 17, 2015. He leaves behind his mother Mildred, sister Jean (Brian Jensen), brother Jim (Joanne Sullivan), 2 nieces and 5 nephews and the next generation of 4 great-nieces and 3 great-nephews who came to know him as Gaffer and also cousins. Gordon was pre-deceased by his father William, brothers Bill and Trevor and his Grandparents Hogg and White.

Funeral service will be held on Monday May 25, 2015 at 1:00 at McPherson Funeral Service, 2200 2nd St. S, Cranbrook BC.

Roberto Edward Jack (Bobby)

Born on Jan. 5, 1966, Roberto went to be with the Lord on May 18, 2015 at Cranbrook Regional Hospital at 49 years of age after a courageous battle with cancer. He immigrated from Europe to the U.S. 25 years ago. Roberto met and married a Canadian girl and moved to Kimberley, BC. Roberto

became a Canadian citizen and has lived in Cranbrook as a renovation, construction, flooring installer helper, jack of all trades type person. He was loved and will be sadly missed by his friends from Dairy Queen; Ed & Marg Dieher; Nathan, Hannah & family; Louis Daignault & family; and countless other friends.

His wishes were to be cremated and no service.

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — A novice rider is suing a rodeo company in Vernon, B.C., over a bull named Slow Poke that he alleges failed to live up to its name and caused him serious injury.

Kyle Warman says he began beginner bull-riding lessons at Coyote Creek Rodeo in July 2013 and was bucked off by Slow Poke during his second class.

Warman alleges that the facility failed to train him be-fore putting him on Slow

Poke and claims he was told the bull was compatible with inexperienced riders.

A notice of civil claim in B.C. Supreme Court in Kam-loops accuses Coyote Creek Rodeo and its two owners — Ted and Wade Marchand — of negligence resulting in

serious injury.Warman claims he has

suffered physical and mental issues which include a con-cussion, cognitive injuries, anxiety, headaches, a broken wrist, an injured neck and depression.

The company has not

filed a statement of defence and none of the allegations has been proven in court.

Warman is seeking dam-ages and health-care costs.

“Contrary to representa-tion, Slow Poke was violent,” his claim reads.

Novice rider says Slow Poke’s name was all bull

Canadian PressTwo online petitions

are circulating regarding the name for sports teams from a southern Alberta high school.

One petition calling for the Medicine Hat High School to change the Mohawks team name has received about 100 signatures.

But another one sup-porting the name has been signed by more than 900 people.

School division Supt. Grant Henderson says the school board will be looking more closely at the issue in coming weeks.

Henderson says more information is needed about the specific con-cern around the name.

He says school offi-cials have only heard a little bit from both sides.

“We won’t react until we get more specifics,” he said. “We want to consider both view-points and get that infor-mation before determin-ing the next step.”

Grade 12 student Su-zanne Tripp, who launched the petition calling for a name change, said the Mo-hawks “are a culture, not a mascot.”

Rick Preikschas, a high school alumnus from the Standoff re-serve, started the peti-tion to keep the name. He said it’s up to First Nations to decide wheth-er the moniker is racist.

“I feel that the nam-ing of the school’s sports team and the displaying of the logo is an honour to us as a First Nations people,” reads part of his petition.

“I feel that it is a way to relate to the First Na-tions of Canada and serves as a reminder of the native heritage of the Canadian nation.”

Medicine Hat High School is not the first to grapple with the issue of a name for its sports teams.

Balfour Collegiate in Regina changed its team name to Bears from Red-men in December. And Bedford Road Collegiate in Saskatoon and West-ern Canada High School in Calgary have also ditched the Redmen name. Both schools now call their teams the Red-hawks.
