Our Vision To celebrate the journey of learning by preparing students for their future through a caring, nurturing learning culture, where all students have the opportunity to achieve personal and academic success. FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Carers, Community Members, Staff and Students Last week I had the great pleasure of watching the Wakakirri performance at the Regal Theatre in Subiaco. Six schools performed their dance stories and the students from Calista were last school on the stage with their performance ‘Deep Blue Trash’. The students were amazing with their performance which took us on a journey beneath the ocean, and showed the audience how we can all be super heroes and save the world from pollution. The dance was great, the costumes brilliant and Bronwyn Ni Shiochain, Egypt Ho, and Kandis Hardy were very professional in their presentations at the end of the performance. The students were awarded three awards on the night; Best Creative use if the Signature Item, Most Creative Reuse of Materials, Sets and Props, and the coveted Spirit of Wakakirri Awards. Many thanks to Mrs de Souza and the team of teachers that supported the students to make this event successful. It is great to see that more students are arriving to school on time. With students starting their literacy at 8.35, it is very important that students are at school and enter the classrooms at 8.30 to prepare for the day. Every day is important and research shows that even a few days absence per term can have a lasting effect on a child’s achievement and ability to make and maintain friendships. We appreciate parent support in ensuring that every child attends school on every school day unless they are genuinely unwell. The Calista School Choir will be travelling to Perth Arena tomorrow (Friday 17 th August) to take part in ‘One Big Voice’. Mrs de Souza and Miss Whitley will accompany the students who will be singing together with 6000 others as ‘One Big Voice.’ This will be a great experience for our students and I’m sure they will have a brilliant time. I would like to remind parents once again about appropriate and respectful behaviour around the school. We have had reports of parents using foul language that has been heard by other parents and children. Please remember that children model their behaviour on the behaviour of the adults around them and we expect our students to be respectful and courteous of others at all times. We have had a few issues with parking around the school. Please do not park in front of any driveways. These areas need to be clear for vehicles movement, especially if an emergency vehicle like and Ambulance is needed. Also parents should not be parking at the Physiotherapy Centre on Harlow Road. Vehicles parked illegally may be clamped or towed away. Council rangers regularly patrol the area and will issue fines. During the holidays the council are installing bollards along the school side of Harlow Road. This week’s assembly is being presented by rooms 13 and 16. Please come along and enjoy the performance and stay for a cuppa at the Child and Parent Centre afterwards. WAKAKIRRI PERFORMANCE Last Tuesday night on the 7th of August, 44 students and 6 teachers headed to the Regal Theatre to perform our Wakakirri dance story. After months of hard work at dance rehearsals and puppet, prop and costume making sessions, it all came together wonderfully. The students represented Calista with great energy and danced up a storm onstage, resulting in us wining the Spirit of Wakakirri, Best creative Reuse of Props and Set, and Best use of the Signature item awards. Thank you to all students, families and teachers for your support and hard work on this amazing performance.

ABORIGINAL SEASONS Djilba Growing season (season of conception) August - September Djilba season is a time to look for the yellow and cream flowers starting on mass. Djilba is a transitional time of the year, with some very cold and clear days combining with warmer, rainy and windy days mixing with the occasional sunny day or two. This is the start of the massive flowering explosion that happens in the South West. This starts with the yellow flowering plants such as the Acacias. Also colours that are around at this time of year are creams, combined with some vivid and striking blues. Traditionally, the main food sources included many of the land based grazing animals as in the season before. These included the Yongar (kangaroo), the Waitj (emu) and the Koomal (possum). As the days start to warm up, we start to see and hear the first of the new borns with their proud parent out and about providing them food, guiding them through foraging task and protecting their family units from much bigger animals, including people. The woodland birds will still be nest bound, hence the swooping protective behaviour of the Koolbardi (Magpie) starts to ramp up and if watched closely, so to do the Djidi Djidi (Willy Wag Tails) and the Chuck-a-luck (Wattle Birds) to name a couple of others. As the season progresses and the temperatures continue to rise, we'll start to see the flower stalks of the Balgas (Grass Trees) emerging in preparation for the coming Kambarang season.
