They are way cool

First the basics…

Multicellular

Eukaryotic (they have a nucleus!)

Autotrophs (make their own food)

But what is a plant?

A multi-cellular organism that uses water and sunlight to make its own food and is adapted to nearly every environment on Earth.

A little bit of info…

ALL plants need – sunlight, water, CO2

Plants contain: Chlorophyll

Which is used in : Photosynthesis (in the chloroplast)

Plants CAN’T move

Other Notes:

Nearly all plants have roots or root-like structures

Plants contain cell walls, which are made of cellulose

The Plant Kingdom is divided into DIVISIONS, not phylums

The 4 main divisions:

Mosses (Bryophytes)

Ferns (Pterophyta)

Conifers (Gymnosperms)

Flowering plants (Angiosperms)

Mosses

They are NON-VASCULAR

They reproduce using SPORES! Like who else?

They are typically found on tree trunks, rocks or on the ground – most live in moist areas

Moss is not good for eating though….

Let’s let our plant expert explain it! Let’s talk about Ferns… They reproduce by

SPORES! Ferns are different

from mosses because they have VASCULAR tissue! Series of long tubes They help carry water

and nutrients to other parts of the plant!

It’s an advantage because the plants can grow bigger and taller!

Ferns

They are the largest group of seedless vascular plants

Their leaves are called FRONDS

They have been on earth for about 360 MY

Most ferns grow in tropical areas or areas that receive a lot of rainfall

Let’s take a trip and recap! Conifers

The oldest trees alive are…

- Gymnosperms (that’s another name for conifers)

What is a gymnosperm?

- A vascular plant that produces seeds not protected by a fruit!

What are some characteristics of gymnosperms?

They have ‘naked seeds’ (ha ha)

They do not have flowers

Most leaves of gymnosperms are needlelike or scalelike

Green leaves always stay on branches

How ‘bout some examples?

Pines

Firs

Spruces

Redwoods

Junipers

Let’s look at a conifer! Flowering Plants

These plants are otherwise known as ANGIOSPERMS

An angiosperm is a vascular plant that flowers and has fruit with one or more seeds

They can be found pretty much everywhere –parks, fields, jungles, deserts, etc.

Some flowering plants develop into FRUIT yum

Flowering Plants

They are divided into 2 main groups

Monocots

Dicots

Examples of monocots: corn, rice, wheat and barley, bananas, pineapples, dates

Examples of dicots: peanuts, green beans, peas, apples, oranges and maple, oak, elm trees
