Introduction to Kingston University

Kingston Business School is akey part of Kingston University,the largest higher educationprovider in South West London,with more than 23,000 studentsenrolled on full and part-timecourses. The Faculty of Business and Law at Kingston has been at the forefrontof excellence since it was formed in1984. It combines the BusinessSchool and the Law School, both of which can trace their roots to the60s. We run some of the longestestablished business and lawcourses in the UK. Our mission is to provide and unlock opportunitiesin business, management and thelaw and we do this by:

• Offering a comprehensive set of courses with an absolutededication to student achievementand relevance;

• Pursuing world-class researchwhich has impact on ourstakeholders;

Each of these three ingredients isembedded in what we do. We are the first business school inthe world that has receivedaccreditation from the Association of MBAs (AMBA) for all its BusinessAdministration programmes(Master’s in Business Management,the Kingston MBA including itsexecutive variants and the KingstonDBA). Plus we have also beenawarded EPAS accreditation fromthe European Foundation forManagement Development (EFMD)for two sets of managementprogrammes at both undergraduateand postgraduate level. At doctorallevel our MSc in Management andBusiness Studies Research isrecognised by the ESRC, and is the pathway to the ESRCrecognised PhD.

Kingston Business School has along and rich history, and today is one of the leading institutionsfor the provision of business and management courses. Our portfolio extends acrossnumerous areas includingaccounting and finance, humanresource management andmarketing and also includes our flag-ship Kingston MBAprogramme.

Strongly embedded in the school is the desire to pursue world-classresearch, and we undertakecollaborations with researchers andorganisations across the world tostudy and develop new andinfluential ideas. These projectsinvolve large multi-nationalcompanies in both the public andprivate sector as well as many smallbusinesses.

Many of our alumni now hold verysenior positions up to CEO’s andDirectors of small to medium sizedcompanies both within the privateand public sector across the globe.

Courses & Teaching

Undergraduate andPostgraduate courses withrecognition and accreditation

Kingston Business School offer a range of undergraduate andpostgraduate courses acrossseveral business disciplinesincluding marketing, humanresources, finance, generalmanagement, and our wellestablished Kingston MBAprogramme. Additionally we also have a range of establisheddoctoral research programmes withdedicated facilities, lifelong learningopportunities and continuousprofessional development. Many of our courses are recognised andaccredited by professional bodies,illustrating their quality and relevancein today’s world.

Innovative new courses

We are constantly looking todevelop our course portfolio inresponse to student demand or asnew areas of interest develop withinthe business world. This can be amixture of combining different fieldsof study from within Business, oroffering combination courses withother Faculties across the universityto ensure the teaching is as broadand relevant as possible.

Examples of courses are MAMarketing & Finance and MAInternational Business Managementwith Entrepreneurship, as well asMSc Banking & Finance and MAMarketing Communications &Advertising. They are designed tooffer cross-over expertise, enablingyou to widen your knowledge andexperience, and giving you flexibilityin your career prospects.

Several of our well-establishedcourses are now also offered with a minor field in Business English,enabling applicants from outside the UK to improve their languageskills while developing theirknowledge of specialised areas of business and law.

Flexible study options

We know that studying is a majorcommitment and we want you tosucceed, whether you are hoping to use your qualification to stand out from the crowd when applyingfor jobs, to help you gain that all-important promotion, or simply to expand your knowledge of asubject that interests you. We prideourselves on offering you top-qualityteaching, support and resources,and are keen to provide you with aprogramme that suits you and takesinto account your work and lifecommitments.

We take a student-centredapproach to learning. Postgraduatecourses are designed to allowmaximum flexibility by offering you part-time options and theopportunity to complement andreinforce your study with learning in the workplace. The studycommitment varies depending onwhich course you take, with many of our courses available for part-timeevening or afternoon/evening study,and some on an open-learningweekend attendance basis.

The structure of taught coursesusually comprises teaching withperiods of guided and self-directedstudy and research. Our courses are modular and are designed togive you the chance to tailor yourstudies to your area of expertise bychoosing particular option modules.

AccreditationsOur courses are designed incollaboration with industry and,where applicable we always look for accreditation from theappropriate professional andstatutory bodies to ensure they arerelevant to today’s world. KingstonBusiness School is one of an elitenumber of UK business schools with Association of MBAaccreditation of our MBA courses.Plus we have also received EPASaccreditation from the EuropeanFoundation for ManagementDevelopment for several of ourpostgraduate and undergraduatebusiness programmes; only thesecond UK business school toreceive this accreditation.

Many other courses offer graduatesmemberships and exemptions froma wide range of membership bodies,including the Chartered Institute ofManagement, the Institute ofChartered Secretaries &Administrators and the CharteredInstitute of Purchasing & Supply.

It made me realise where my realpassion lies. The logical careerprogression for me was to carry on in IT,but the course has taken me beyondthat. International linksKingston Business School isrecognised internationally as a leading centre of study and iscommitted to ensuring the quality of teaching, research and thestudent experience. We are involvedin teaching, research andconsultancy in countries as diverseas Australia, Russia, China and inEurope. Doctoral students fromaround the world help give adistinctly international dimension and a truly global perspective to our programmes.

We have many educational links with institutions overseas, includingthe Kingston MBA which is taught in numerous countries includingRussia, Greece and India.

Links with industry Staff within the Business Schoolhave a high level of engagementwith their respective industryorganisations, and some membersare on secondments to industry and government.

To ensure that we keep you up to date with the latest industrydevelopments, we have alsoestablished links with the businessand legal institutions of centralLondon, as well as in the widercommunity of south-west Londonand beyond. We are also committed to thetransfer of knowledge to business,which can be facilitated via aKnowledge Transfer Partnership(or KTP) A KTP is a UK governmentinitiative to help companies gainaccess to University knowledge,expertise and resources in order to undertake a strategic project.

Learning resource centreThe learning resource centre atKingston Hill, named the NightingaleCentre, offers a wide range ofservices and 24 hour access duringterm time alongside academic textloans. Students can also access:

CampusKingston Business School is basedat the Kingston Hill campus, which is set in landscaped gardens and isa beautiful place to study with plentyof green spaces. The campus has a good community feel thanks to itsmany on-site facilities, including:

• Halls of residence with rooms for 565 students

• A bar, cafe and restaurant.

Research

We have a vibrant researchcommunity engaging staff,research students and associatesfrom government, industry andcommerce. Work ranges frompioneering academic research in areas such as small businessfinance and consumer behaviour,to highly focused consultancy forclients. Kingston Business Schoolis a recognised ESRC (Economicand Social Research Council)outlet for research training fordoctoral students. Our PhD inparticular is recognised by theESRC as fulfilling its requirementsto provide a broad-basedprogramme of research trainingfor those studying at doctorallevel in the UK.

The excellent quality of workproduced is reflected in theinternational reputations of staffthrough papers published in refereedjournals as well as prize-winningconference papers, and thesubstantial external funding fromprivate- and public-sector sponsors.These include HSBC Bank, Nokia,the Soros Foundation and theEconomic and Social ResearchCouncil (ESRC).

The Business School has a numberof specialist research units thatoperate across the principalbusiness disciplines, emphasisingthe multidisciplinary nature of ourresearch activity.

Research in the Business SchoolOur commitment to research isillustrated by the School’s excellentresults in the most recent ResearchAssessment Exercise (RAE).

In the 2008 RAE, the BusinessSchool’s research output was veryhighly rated, with 90 percent ofsubmitted research being of aquality that is ‘recognisedinternationally’ or better in terms oforiginality, significance and rigour. Of this, 10 percent was classified as ‘world leading’ and 35 percent as‘internationally excellent’. This resultputs research undertaken in theBusiness School as joint 35th in the league table of 90 submissions,and places it as the top post-1992university in terms of researchquality.

Strong research cultureThe strong research culture in theBusiness School underpins ourhigh-quality teaching and forms bothan essential part of the day-to-dayintellectual activities of our academicstaff and our development strategy.

Our research activities involve asubstantial level of externalcollaboration in setting our agenda,conducting the research anddisseminating results. We provide a supportive infrastructure toundertake research, encourage staff to present at internationalconferences, host a number ofseminar programmes, and producean occasional and a working paperseries. We are a member of theEuropean Doctoral School onKnowledge and Management(EUDOKMA) and European Doctoral Programmes Association in Management and BusinessAdministration (EDAMBA) – aninternational consortium for thetraining of postgraduate researchstudents.

The strong research culture in theBusiness School underpins our high-quality teaching and forms both an essential part of the day-to-dayintellectual activities of our academicstaff and our development strategy.

You will be expected todemonstrate the ability to study atan advanced level and for someprogrammes have relevantprofessional experience in a setting appropriate to the chosenspecialism.

Overseas applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are able to study at masters level and haveachieved the equivalent academiclevel. They must also have a goodlevel of competence in written andspoken English. Prior learning –APE(L) Applicants offering priorqualifications and learning may beexempt from appropriate parts of a course in accordance with theUniversity’s mechanisms and policyfor the assessment of prior learningand prior experiential learning.

LocationKingston Business School is locatedin the idyllic Kingston Hill campus 5 minutes drive from Kingston upon Thames.

Kingston is a beautiful place tostudy. Situated by the River Thames,steeped in history, a shopper’sparadise and with plenty of top-quality cafes, wine bars, restaurantsand pubs to relax in after a hardstudy session. Kingston offers thewide open space of the countrysidecombined with the ample amenitiesof a major town. In addition, our safe and green Kingston Hill campus is within easy walkingdistance of Richmond Royal Park;and with central London only 25minutes away by train, you don’thave far to travel to access its world renowned thriving businessand cultural centre.
