Brothers,

This month marks my second consecutive year attending the State Convention. I was accompanied by DGK Chris-topher Smith, PGK Bill Martin and our wives. The lot of us traveled via Amtrak which proved to be an enjoyable ex-perience, in spite of the fact that our train broke down west of Los Angeles. Finally arrived at Old Town Station in San Diego some two hours late, PGK Bill Martin stepped off of the train and noticed he had the wrong suitcase. Both Bill and Chis jumped back on-board in an effort to retrieve Bill’s bag, only to have the doors shut and train proceed to Mexico. Let it be noted that when the Con-ductor says, “don’t get back on that train”, you might want to listen. I’m still laughing! This year, Supreme made the decision to reduce the number of award catego-ries, making the process even more competitive. With that, I’m delighted to an-nounce that Council 5803 took first place for Family Activities and received a certificate of recognition for Culture of Life Activates. These are both awards we should all be proud of as they highlight the true essence of our commitment to Christ and the Good of the Order. Our State Deputy, Joseph C. made it very clear that the future was going to be different. He stated, “You’ve tak-en care of everyone else thus far, now it’s time to take care of one another”. These words hit home as the room erupted in applause. As Knights we are called to assist all in need; however we must never forget that our Order was founded on the princi-ples of caring for orphans, widows and Brother Knights. In summary, the convention was enlightening and a good time was had by all.

I want to thank PGK Jerry Padgett for stepping in as the Fish Fry chairman at the beginning of this Colombian Year, as well as all our brothers who have supported this event throughout the years. Due to chronic back pain, Jerry will be stepping down after the June 7th dinner service. Please note; we are still in need of a new chairman for this event. Jerry has graciously offered to continue ordering the fish and necessary supplies after his departure as chairman. As mentioned at our last meeting, there will not be a Fish Fry for the month of July as we look for a new chairman. Unfortunately if we are unable to find a replacement, we will be forced to close this event. Please contact PGK Jerry Padgett if you are interested. Brother John Lemos is in the process of replacing the swamp cooler over the kitch-en. We hope to have this effort complete in the next several days. We are current-ly taking bids to replace the roof.

Looking at the bingo work schedule, I see the same names every week. Once again, this is a call to new and senior members who are not supporting bingo. We need callers and folks to help sell pull tabs for Saturday night. A couple hours a month would help lighten the load for those who continually support this revenue source. FYI. your wives are welcome to help as well. Call PGK Rich Ostrich or PGK Norm Ouellette for details.

Elections will be held at our next business meeting on Tuesday June 11th. Please be sure to attend and support our newly nominated officers.

Vivat Jesus,

HABIT

The word “habit” occurs only a few times in Scripture. Rather, we have words “virtue” and “vice”. We call the habitual performance of good acts “virtue”. Bad habits result in doing bad things that are performed so often that they no longer trouble our conscience are called, vices. Good habits are not necessarily difficult but are acts that become routine through constant use which can help us to a greater insight and perceptions to holiness.

For Jesus, the cross was the habit of His life on earth. “Whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me” (Mat 10:38). These words are difficult for us to digest. The little things that we offer daily (our prayers, works, joys and sufferings) with fidelity and love constitute the cross for most of us.

Good habits influence not only the spiritual side of our existence by are constantly at work in the trivial matters of our daily life. Humor is a virtue because it helps us not take ourselves so seriously. Since we do things out of habit, there is the possibility that some of those things we do are vices. The sad truth is that we can be trapped by activities, thoughts and desires that are vices. These can be most difficult to change. Here again we do things out of habit. Our bad habits become a state or condition of being.

So the bottom line is this: Love is the force behind the forming of good habits and dis-solving of bad ones. It is out of love for Christ that we can begin and continue on the path that leads to good habits and virtue.

Vivat Jesus,

Deacon Terry

Lazy Days of Summer

Have you ever heard the expression “lazy days of summer”? While the hot weather may encourage a slower paced life, in many ways summer can be the busi-est time of the year. Especially for parents with school-aged children. And being busy, it’s easy to forget about such things as reviewing your life in-surance coverage. The purpose of this column is to encourage you to meet with me, your Knights of Columbus agent, before the end of the summer. Whether or not you have life insurance with the order, I’ll be happy to meet with you and make sure your coverage continues to meet your needs and goals. If you’ve had any life changes since you last bought a policy (new home, new child, new job, etc.) chances are your life insurance needs to be up-dated. I’ll work with you to make sure you have the coverage you need at a price you can afford. Call me to set up an appointment. When we meet you’ll discover that time spent with me is time well spent. But make the call today. Because sum-mer is not only busy, it’s also coming to an end.

Fraternally,

Willie Romero FICF

Fingerprints of God

An amazing thing happened to me earlier this week, which shows how God is working in my life. We were at a celebration for my grandson’s baptism, and my brother-in-law’s tooth fell out. The next day was crazy with packing as we were planning to leave the next day at 5:00 a.m. We did not start looking for a dentist until about 4:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon to see if we could get it fixed. When I called Neil Fanning’s office it went to voicemail. We did not know if he was even open. We decided to just drive down and see if we could get in. We were in luck, the office was open, but the receptionist told us that Neil had left at 1:00 p.m. and was not scheduled to come back. Feeling defeated we turned around and as my hand touched the door, Neil’s car pulled in and he was able to take care of the dental emergency. Now, many people would say we got lucky (I would have before I became Catholic). I think, however, it was the fingerprints of God at work in my life, giving us what we needed when we needed it. Let’s look at this a little deeper at all the things that happened to make this possible: • The receptionist did not answer (she was on the phone with the insurance company);

had she answered, she would have sent us away • The receptionist did not call us back before we arrived; had she done so, she would

have sent us away • If we would have decided to go in before calling, we would have missed Neil • If we or Neil arrived 3 minutes earlier or later, we would have missed each other At the end of the visit, I apologized for interrupting his day as he must have come the office for something. He said, however, he did not remember why he came in. So, when people say God does not take an active part in their lives, I tell them that he does; we just need to look. Vivat Jesus, Clark Pentico, Worthy Chancellor

Train with a Brother Knight

You don’t work with our Knights for long without noticing how much we do for the Church; and how much energy and drive it takes to move the mountains we move. Energy and resilience is needed to serve the Lord as we strive to do. Pain and fa-tigue can drastically slow our ability to serve. So, is it not worth our attention and effort to try to stay as healthy as possible? To treat our body as a Temple of The Holy Spirit by providing it with the nutrition, training, sleep and rest fit for its ser-vice? Not by poisoning it with ignorance and addictive indulgences? I am now on staff at a facility to help us accomplish much of that; to train my Broth-er Knights how to use strength training to build up and repair our aging bodies for many years of service to come. With that in mind, I can also coach on better eating habits for fitness, using supplements for aging optimally and sleeping restoratively. In the past, I could only talk or write about strategies for getting the most out of an aging body; now I can help you put them into practice! Fitness19 in Simi is an awesome facility, with mint-new equipment; bright, shiny and clean! Training fees are reasonable and I’m on the job Mon, Tue, Thu and Fri from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. I have some open slots in my schedule and would love to help my Brother Knights stay fit for service! Here is more on the benefits of training with me. Take a positive step to a Better Life: Come in, sign up, get on my schedule - Together we will make that happen! To your greater fitness and health, in Chris, Frank

ANNUAL POSTAL CAN FOOD DRIVE

Joe and I would like to thank all the volunteers that helped with the Postal Food

Drive on May 11th. Joe managed the transfer of the donations from the Post Office

vehicles to the Brother Knights’ trucks which were then delivered to St. Rose Chris-

tian Services Food Pantry at the Church.

I managed the unloading of the trucks and sorting & filling the storage shed to its ca-

pacity with 1000 sq. ft. of packaged food. We actually had overflow that we put into

the Christian Services Office and back-up shed. Our truck drivers also took 8 truck-

loads of food over to the Samaritan Center.

Volunteers at St. Rose were:

• Christian Service Director Penny Liberatore with a number of parishioners along with youth from the St. Rose confirmation group.

• From the Knights were Jan & I, Jerry & Mary Beth Pitstick and PGK Dan Owens

• The Volunteer Truck Drivers from the Knights were Joe Trematore, Paul Friedeborn, John MacKenzie, PGK John Antonacci, PGK John Mc Dermot & PGK Bob Spielman and Jim.

If we forgot someone please except our apologies!

Thanks to all of you in helping to feed those in need!

BINGO WORKERS

We are in need of more pull tab workers and we still need a caller and a

call back person. Training is free and it is not a hard job. For pull tabs you

basically sell lottery tickets to the players. If you are new to the council

please call me so I can get you on the Bingo Schedule. If you can’t work

a specific weekend in July or have a shift preference please email me at

[email protected] . I produce the schedule around the 2nd Wednesday

of the month before. So get me any special requests for July by June

11th. Keep in mind cashiers and pull tab workers now start at 4:00pm.

Also we have a had a lot of knights showing up to help without being scheduled. Though, we do

appreciate it, it leads to staffing problems as the workers that are scheduled are left to wonder

why they are there. For example, one week we had 7 pull tab workers, and the next week 2. It

would help a lot and be much more appreciated if you could work a scheduled shift once a month.

I have post the bingo worker schedule online at www.kc5803.org.
