Field Agent I've handled 170 Death Claims in the 8 years I have had the privilege to be a Field Agent. Most interesting event lately, a 92 year old member died leaving a Death Benefit to His Parents. He took out the policy when he was 18 years old and never changed the beneficiaries. What about your beneficiary designations? Are they up to date? Is it time for your Fraternal Review? _____________________________ The Knights of Columbus prides itself on servicing its policies. When the Order or the Field Agent hears of the death of a member or his family, they immediately review to see if there is existing coverage, that is a proactive approach to contacting the family. A recent article, April 24th in The Tampa Tribune, indicated that a major Life Insurance company settled a $478 Million claim that it had not provided life insurance benefits to its policyholders. There is quite a difference between our Fraternal attitude to members and the commercial insurers' attitude to their policyholders. Last year we paid out more in dividends than we paid in Death Benefits, it truly is Life Insurance. Should you provide protection for your loved ones through the Order? ______________________________ Your Council needs a few more members to become insurance members before the June 30th year end to earn the Fr. McGivney Award. If you have a need, now is an excellent time to provide for your loved ones and to help your Council earn Star Council.

NIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

TOOTSIE ANYONE?

On Sunday May 20th twelve Color Corps members from Assembly 1850 participated in the procession for Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Four Sir Knights, carrying her statue, lead the procession, followed by eight more in close order. Many parishioners coming from the Mass at "Nativity" joined the line and prayed the Holy Rosary led by Fr.Rias, as they marched around the parish grounds. The day was hot, but the heat, in no way, diminished the fervor of the faithful. Two new members, SK's Martin Condon and Lin Poissonnier were performing in their first event this day. We were proud to have them, as part of the Corps. Bill Queenan

More good news on the pro-life front brothers, the tide has definitely turned in public opinion and less and less people identify themselves as 'pro-choice' This is a Gallup poll - pretty objective and apolitical. By the grace of God and the prayers of the faithful minds and hearts are changing and if this keeps up, the politicians and the laws will change to reflect the trend. We must continue to focus our efforts prayers and fasting towards the continued conversion of our nation and our culture. Click on this link to read the article and poll results http://www.gallup.com/poll/154838/Pro-Choice-Americans-Record-Low.aspx Thanks, Chris Gladu

Prayer for the Sick Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the sick, we turn to you in this time of illness. O dearest comforter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with your gentle love, and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden. Dear God, we place our worries in your hands. We place our sick under your care and humbly ask that you restore your servant to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge your will and know that whatever you do, you do for the love of us. Amen.

NIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

On June 2nd Assembly 1850 hosted our annual spring BBQ at the Haley Nursing Home in Tampa. Over 100 Knights and family members attended. Eight Sks from the Sarasota Assembly also attended, making this event the largest to date. Many happy vets enjoyed hot dogs and hamburgers for our early afternoon luncheon. American flags were distributed to all those in wheelchairs. Entertainment was provided by the Zumba Dancers of Brandon, who always put on an exciting show. We are grateful, when so many of our heroes get a chance to mingle with family. Seeing hearts uplifted is its own reward. We continue to encourage all our Worthy Knights to bring in food and hygiene products to our meetings. Bill VAVS Rep.

Assumption of Mary

August 15,2012

History: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life is a defined dogma of the Catholic Church. The Feast of the Assumption, celebrated every year on August 15, is a very old feast of the Church, celebrated universally by the sixth century. It commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay--a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a holy day of obligation. The feast was originally celebrated in the East, where it is known as the Feast of the Dormition, a word which means "the falling asleep." The earliest printed reference to the belief that Mary's body was assumed into Heaven dates from the fourth century, in a document entitled "The Falling Asleep of the Holy Mother of God." The document recounts, in the words of the Apostle John, to whom Christ on the Cross had entrusted the care of His mother, the death, laying in the tomb, and assumption of the Blessed Virgin. Tradition places Mary's death at Jerusalem or at Ephesus, where John was living.

NIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

Our Principles

All the good works we do are informed by our four core principles: Charity - Our Catholic faith teaches us to “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Members of the Knights of Columbus show love for their neighbors by conducting food drives and donating the food to local soup kitchens and food pantries, by volunteering at Special Olympics, and by supporting, both spiritually and materially, mothers who choose life for their babies. Knights recognize that our mission, and our faith in God, compels us to action. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need, a call we answer every day. Unity – None of us is as good as all of us. Members of the Knights of Columbus all know that – together – we can accomplish far more than any of us could individually. So we stick together…we support one another. That doesn’t mean that we always agree or that there is never a difference of opinion. It does mean that – as a Knight of Columbus – you can count on the support and encouragement of your brother Knights as you work to make life better in your parish and community. Fraternity – The Venerable Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, in large part, to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when the family breadwinner died – often prematurely. The Order’s top-rated insurance program continues to do this today, as do individual Knights, who last year gave more than 10 million hours of their time to assist sick and/or disabled members and their families. In the Knights of Columbus, we watch out for and take care of one another. Patriotism – Members of the Knights of Columbus, be they Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, Cubans, Filipinos, Poles, or Dominicans, are patriotic citizens. We are proud of our devotion to God and country, and believe in standing up for both. Whether it’s in public or private, the Knights remind the world that Catholics support their nations and are amongst the greatest citizens.

Since May 1, 2011, three Silver Roses have been making their way across North America, from Canada to the United States to Mexico. The Roses began their will conclude their journey on Dec. 12, 2011,

the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico.

It is the 51st year of the program which began in 1960 as a project

of the Columbian Squires of North America to honor the Blessed Virgin under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. The program has continued since then as a project of Squires Circles, councils and Fourth Degree assemblies in several

jurisdictions.

In 2001 Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson expanded the program

by beginning the “Running of the Rose” from the 119th Annual Meeting of the Supreme Council in Toronto. “The ‘Running of the Rose’ is a perfect program for the Knights of Columbus,” said Supreme Knight Anderson. “Through it we honor not only Our Lady

of Guadalupe and express the unity of the Order, but we also reaffirm the Order’s dedication to the sanctity of human life. It is to the Blessed Mother that we turn in prayer as we work to end the Culture of Death that grips our society. As we think in terms of ‘One

Life, One Rose,’ it is most appropriate that we turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe who made known her will through Juan Diego and the miracle of the roses.”

Today three Silver Roses travel through North America exemplifying Knights of Columbus devotion to Our Lady and commitment to the Culture of Life. One Rose begins its journey in Ontario moving through the central

United States. A second Rose starts its route in Manitoba, moving westward to British Columbia and then down the Pacific coast through California before turning eastward to Arizona and New Mexico. The third Rose moves from New York, moving through the

eastern United States and the Gulf coast.

On August 9, 2012, this rose will visit District 40 as it visits St. Francis of Assisi in Seffner. As Worthy District Deputy Julio Alvarez described it at the most recent business meeting, this is a “Lifetime Event”. All knights should plan to attend this most worthy event as it promises to be truly memorable. This event on August 9th promises to be truly special. All four parishes in our district are encouraged to attend, not just the Knights of Columbus, but all fellow ministries in each parish. KOC 6724 Rose Chairman is Chris McManus. If you feel the calling to be a member of this committee, or if you can help in getting other parish ministries involved please contact him at [email protected]. More information will be coming as the event draws closer.
