YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST

S E T O N S O U N D I N G S S U M M E R 2 0 2 1

Dear Friends of Mother Seton School,

As I complete my second year as principal at Mother Seton School, I am thankful for the support of the faculty and sta, the school families, students,

community members, and the Daughters of Charity. While this school year was very dierent from past years, much good work was accomplished, and our future remains bright.

On May 18, Most Reverend William Lori, Archbishop of Baltimore, announced that our Archdiocesan family would observe a “Year of the Eucharist.” is 12-month period began on June 6, 2021, the Solemnity

of Corpus Christi, and will end on the same Solemnity on June 16, 2022. In making this announcement, Archbishop Lori stated,

“As we emerge from this global pandemic, it is imperative that we renew our perspective on how the Mass and the Eucharist are foundational to our Faith.”

Our Patroness, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, had a strong devotion to the Eucharist. In fact, it was a Eucharistic procession that Elizabeth encountered while out walking one day in New York City that nally convinced Elizabeth to convert to Catholicism. e night before her rst communion, Elizabeth wrote in her journal that the “burning” inside of her to receive the Eucharist kept her awake at night. After receiving the Eucharist, she wrote, “is heavenly bread of angels removes my pains, my cares – warms, cheers, soothes, contents, and renews my whole being.”

is year, our eighth-grade class was blessed to celebrate their graduation on Corpus Christi at the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. It was the rst time in over a year that we gathered together in Church for Mass, and it was tting that we should celebrate on the same day we honor the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church says, the Eucharist is “the source and summit of the Christian life; the center of the Church’s life; the sum and summary of our faith; and the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ Himself.” rough this communion, we are made whole as we renew our faith and nd the spiritual sustenance we need, especially our graduates facing the next chapter in their lives. As Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton implores us, I pray they call on the Eucharist to sustain them during good and bad times.

It is my hope that our Mother Seton School community—students, faculty and sta, families, alumni, friends, and benefactors—will rekindle their relationship with the Eucharist and be more like our Patroness in embracing the grace we receive when we accept the Body and Blood of Christ into our lives. Together, may we all nd the strength and renewal granted to us by our Savior as we approach this exciting upcoming year.

The LaCroce family has graciously offered to match gifts up to $10,000! Your gift will go twice the distance in ensuring the Seton-LaCroce Learning Center continues to have the resources available that our students with learning challenges need to be successful, life-long learners! Give today and help us reach our $10,000 goal!

As the school year progressed, we were able to begin to resume a few of our beloved traditions.

e National Junior Honor Society hosted a Spirit Week in April. A $5 donation allowed students to participate in the daily out-of-uniform challenges. emes such as Superhero Day, 80s, 90s, and Early 2000s gave students a fun way to express their creativity! All proceeds raised beneted the purchase of

a memorial bench in memory of Sister Brenda and the Sister Brenda Scholarship Fund.

In May, we enjoyed our annual Walk-a-thon and Talent Show. 44 students participated in the talent show this year showcasing dancing skills, vocal arrangements, and even a harp performance.

Although we were unable to hold our MSS Carnival again this year,

John Dowling, our MSS Pizza Man, hosted an “MSS Carnival Pizza Sale” along with his grandson Brandon Keeney, Terry Smith, and several other volunteers. Over 200 homemade pizzas were made and purchased allowing participants to have a little piece of the carnival. We are looking forward to bringing back the carnival in 2022!

Mark your calendar: e 2022 MSS Carnival will be May 23-28, 2022!
