Congratulations to Vince Lardinois

February Knight of the Month

Brother Knight Vincent “Vince” Lardinois joined the order in March 1996 and quickly became a 3rd Degree Knight. For his dedicated

service and contributions, Brother Vince is recognized as the Council 9993 February 2018 Knight of the Month.

Brother Vince is currently an active participant in the Council’s monthly Pancake Breakfast efforts. Brother Vince also leads the Council’s Lighthouse Catholic Media program, bringing parish members great Catholic resources, in the form of CDs and booklets, to help them on their spiritual journey.

Brother Vince is married to wife Sandy. Both Vince and Sandy enjoy spending time with their family, traveling, and attending/volunteering at church and Council activities.

We are blessed to have Brother Knight Vince in Council 9993. We thank him for his enthusiastic participation in Council, church, and community activities.

Editors Note: Vince and his family have been vacationing out of state. Because of this, we weren’t able to obtain a recent picture. When he gets back in town, we’ll get an updated picture and post it on our social media platforms as well as here in the newsletter.

Congratulations to the Wermer Family

Remembering Herman Jasper

Herman Francis Hasper, 79, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, F e b r u a r y 1 7 , 2 0 1 8 , surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born August 28, 1938, in Cawker City, Kansas, to Leo and Cecilia Jasper, the fourth of eight children, Herman was a Kansas farm boy. He graduated from Cawker City High School in 1956 and Kansas State U n i v e r s i t y i n 1 9 6 0 . Following graduation, he worked for Deere & Co until his retirement in 1992. In 1963, he married his

beloved wife of 54 years, Cleta. During their life together, Herman’s job took them to Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Iowa and Illinois. Following his retirement after 31 years of work, they settled in Colorado Springs in 1992.

Herman’s life is best described by the word faithfulness: to his wife, to his family, to his God, and his community. He was a good provider for his wife and four children, yet his career did not get in the way of his devotion to his family. Throughout his life, he happily appeared whenever his children needed his strong back and handyman skills. This doting grandfather delighted in cheering at sporting matches and applauding plays, musical performances, and dance recitals. As devout Catholics, Herman and Cleta joined St Patrick’s Catholic Church, where they attended daily Mass, served as Eucharistic Ministers, and Herman serves on the parish finance council. He became a Knight of Columbus and, during his 25 years with the St Patrick Knights of Columbus, held all key leadership positions, including serving as Grand Knight three different times. Outside of church he volunteered with Pikes Peak Hospice for 18 years and was a member of the Colorado Springs Nob Hill Lions Club for twenty years, holding various offices, receiving several major service awards, and operating the Christmas tree lot for over ten years.

While Herman filled his retirement with volunteer activities,he somehow also found time to enjoy camping and the great outdoors. He enjoyed cooking outside and expanded his cooking to the kitchen where he also, to the family’s relief, expanded he repertoire of spices far beyond his early experiments with bay leaf. He also loved trying new restaurants, and he was always ready to try a new cuisine with a brave companion. He loved living in his adopted home and came to know Colorado from top-to-bottom and end-to-end. And absolutely no one enjoyed a good joke more than Herman. With his impish sense of humor, fewer safe from he pranks. In fact, he himself was his favorite target.

Herman’s passing leaves a great hole in the heart of many people. There is no doubt he already has found a volunteer position in Our Fathers’s Heavenly Bureaucracy, and, here on earth, his children and grandchildren have largesse to fill.

Herman is survived by his wife, his four children and six grandchildren, three sisters, two brothers, and a large extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Assembly 3049 Message Ron Krom

Faithful Navigator Making Progress This Lent?

Brother Knights and Sir Knights,

As you probably know, our Council and Assembly have recently lost a couple of exemplary Knights, SK Roy Salem and SK Herman Jasper. Not only will we miss them, but we have the formidable task of filling those vacant shoes. If you were at their funerals or vigils, you might remember the eulogies and think, “I could never do that.” But when you think of challenges ahead, you might also think of two great quotations:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13) and, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” (Mother Teresa)

So let’s begin with small daily acts of charity, unity, or fraternity, and it will build a great legacy in the end.

For those who have just begun the journey of Knighthood in the first degree, you might wonder what to do next. There are boundless ways to express yourself in acts of charity. From the way you treat others around you, to giving of yourself in ministries, volunteer work, family life, or K of C projects, it’s all good. Lent is an especially good time to work at becoming the man, and Knight, that you want to be.

Further along the journey are the 2nd and 3rd degrees, emphasizing the virtues of unity and fraternity, two more principles that apply to many aspects of life, and not just to the Knights of Columbus. The last step is the lesson of patriotism, taught in the 4th Degree. If ever our nation needed true patriots, now is the time. I don’t count patriotism as only waving the flag or saying the Pledge of Allegiance. I think it is also knowing and preserving our heritage, our freedoms, and our Constitution. It’s guiding our nation to be first in morality and justice, and it’s exercising informed and responsible citizenship. As you should know, we do not bring partisan politics into K of C activities, working for or against certain politicians or parties. We do encourage men to bring their Catholic faith out into the public arena and vote with a well-formed conscience. So now is the time to ask oneself, “Am I using the lessons I have learned? Am I making progress?” It doesn’t have to be giant steps. Just try something that you haven’t done before. At St. Patrick and at our Council, there are many, many opportunities offered if you look for them. Take the great work of the funeral ministry at St. Patrick or the Sir Knights who form the Honor Guard for funeral and other events. There are opportunities to advance to full Knighthood and to the 4th Degree.

If you want to know more, check out our web page or ask an officer. We would love to help you take the next step.

St. Patrick of Ireland is one of the world's most popular saints. He was born in Roman Britain and when he was fourteen or so, he was captured by Irish pirates during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. At the time, Ireland was a land of Druids and pagans but Patrick turned to God and wrote his memoir, The Confession. In The Confession, he wrote:

"The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith, and my soul was rosed, so that, in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same. I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or rain.”Patrick's captivity lasted until he was twenty, when he escaped after having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Britain and was reunited with his family.A few years after returning home, Patrick saw a vision he described in his memoir:"I saw a man coming, as it were from Ireland. His name was Victoricus, and he carried many letters, and he gave me one of them. I read the heading: 'The Voice of the Irish.' As I began the letter, I imagined in that moment that I heard the voice of those very people who were near the wood of Foclut, which is beside the western sea-and they cried out, as with one voice: 'We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us.'"The vision prompted his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained by St. Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre, whom he had studied under for years, and was later ordained a bishop and sent to take the Gospel to Ireland.Patrick arrived in Slane, Ireland on March 25, 433. There are several legends about what happened next, with the most prominent claiming he met the chieftan of one of the druid tribes, who tried to kill him. After an intervention from God, Patrick was able to convert the chieftain and preach the Gospel throughout Ireland. There, he converted many people -eventually thousands - and he began building churches across the country. He often used shamrocks to explain the Holy Trinity and

entire kingdoms were eventually converted to Christianity after hearing Patrick's message.Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland for 40 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in Confessions. After years of living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering he died March 17, 461.He died at Saul, where he had built the first Irish church. He is believed to be buried in Down Cathedral, Downpatrick. His grave was marked in 1990 with a granite stone. In His Footsteps:Patrick was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose love and total devotion to and trust in God should be a shining example to each of us. So complete was his trust in God, and of the importance of his mission, he feared nothing -not even death."The Breastplate," Patrick's poem of faith and trust in God:"Christ be within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ inquired, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger."
