Knox® Sentralok® A Master Key Retention System

When fire departments have the responsibility for

a master key to most of the buildings in their

jurisdiction, key control is of the utmost

importance. Knox Company has addressed

key security by developing Sentralok® A, a master key

retention device. It is a highly secure system, which has

become a standard operating procedure for fire

departments nationwide.

How the System WorksThe Sentralok A system provides several options for the release of the Knox Master Key.

When a fire alarm is in progress and a responding apparatus nears the scene, dispatch sends a unique MSK or DTMF signal over two-way radio to a Sentralok A unit mounted within the apparatus. The signal releases the Knox Master Key in that specific apparatus. Now fire personnel can open the building-mounted Knox-Box which holds the building entrance keys, floor plans, interior keys, etc.

For added security, a special option allows for an additional required authorized PIN code. After the unique signal is received via two-way radio, the Sentralok A unit display will prompt for the additional authorized PIN code to complete the release. Once the authorized PIN code is entered, the master key is released.

For areas where radio communication does not work, an optional emergency PIN code is available. Firefighters simply enter this special PIN code and the Knox Master Key is released.

Regardless of which method is used to release the master key, the Sentralok A unit will record the time and date of each release. If a PIN code is utilized, the user’s name and their PIN code is included in the audit trail.

Sentralok units are an integral part of the Knox-Box Rapid Entry System. They assist in providing immediate emergency access, prevent forced entry damage or possible injury to fire personnel.
