K-12 DESIGNWall SchoolKoch Hazard designed this new K-12 school in Wall, SD. Construction is complete on the new K-12 school in Wall, South Dakota. The school is located on a large site just north of I-90, between the two interstate exits into Wall.

The school is a testament to the tenacity of the citizens of Wall who had an unwavering vision to improve their education facilities. Koch Hazard was retained by the school district in 1997. Initially, options were investigated for new facilities and the focus was shifted to renovating, remodeling and adding on to the existing school. This was studied extensively for approximately two years. The project was shelved until 2003, when the district called upon Koch Hazard to revisit the concept of a new K-12 school on a site that had been acquired based upon a previous Koch Hazard site acquisition study.

The new 55,000 square foot school was programmed and designed on an accelerated schedule. Construction started in 2004. The project was completed on budget and on schedule. One of the unique aspects of the project was the use of architectural precast exterior walls. This allowed for quick erection and enclosure, thus providing a sheltered work place for contractors to complete interior construction during the winter. The accelerated construction schedule allowed the project to be occupied prior to the start of the 2005 school year.

The project represents the fulfillment of a dream of a small South Dakota community and school district that believed it could accomplish its goals against what appeared to be insurmountable odds.

K-12 DESIGNThe new two-story Longfellow Elementary School replaces the existing school on the same city block. The compact design allows for the existing school to remain during construction and maximize the area for the playground and green space. The twenty classrooms are arranged around a central core of double height space containing the commons, library

and gymnasium. The exterior character of the brick, pre-cast concrete and sloped roofs pays homage to the era of the original building and compliments the residential neighborhood.

K-12 DESIGNThis 14,000 square foot expansion to the Tripp-Delmont school building will add classrooms for grades K-3 to consolidate all grades in the facility, expand locker rooms to accommodate double header game nights for boys and girls, and expand the kitchen to meet code requirements and better serve the 220-240 noon meals.

The project also includes the addition of a lunch room/commons area to move lunch times out of the gymnasium and provide a gathering space, a new school/community library, and relocates the district/school offices to the main entry to provide better security and information dissemination.

K-12 DESIGNThe new Tea Intermediate School will serve grades 4-6 in the rapidly growing district. Located just south of the high school/ middle school and north of the elementary school, it will create an educational campus serving nearly all of the district’s students.

The building is designed to complement the adjacent high school in scale and material, reinforcing the campus image. A spacious commons runs the full width of the school, allowing the main entrance on the west while creating an inviting presence facing the primary

approach from the east. Gymnasium and music spaces are located north of the commons, with the administration suite, library and classrooms to the south. The school is planned for a variety of expansion options as the district continues to grow.

K-12 DESIGNMemorial Middle School is the first school in eastern South Dakota designed specifically for middle school students. The two level academic wing of the school is planned with a central “street”. Along one side of the “street” are eight learning centers, each comprising four classrooms, a teacher planning center, a group instruction area, and student lockers. On the other side of the street are ancillary and support areas - Home Ec, Tech Ed, Art and Administration. The focus of this wing is the high ceilinged, open library/media center.

A second wing houses a large gym, separated by an operable partition from a multi-purpose gym, as

well as a gymnastics/wrestling room and lockers. This wing is designed for after-hours community use.

At the hub of the school is the cafetorium, a flexible room that serves both as the school cafeteria and auditorium.

Koch Hazard Architects associated with Ted Rozeboom and Steve Miller now of Rozeboom Miller Architects for this project.

Memorial Middle School is an AIASD Honor Award winner.

K-12 DESIGNThe new High School addition to Woonsocket’s existing Elementary and Middle School efficiently expands the building creating a new commons which acts as the front door to the entire school. The commons provides public access to the library, fitness center and gymnasium as well as providing cafeteria space for the High School. The addition also includes classrooms, a music room, business offices, restrooms and locker rooms.

K-12 DESIGNThis addition consolidates all grade levels for Sioux Falls Christian Schools onto one campus. The project adds two academic wings, offices, a multipurpose room and a cafeteria/ commons to the 2003 high school/ middle school building.

Three classrooms per grade level are provided, with additional flex classrooms to accommodate larger classes for the growing enrollment. The elementary addition features its own library, multipurpose room, commons/ cafeteria and administration offices to allow autonomous operation from the adjoining high school.

Separate site access points, entrances and play fields also allow separation of activities between the schools.

The addition is designed to complement the existing structure, with the same materials, colors and massing. Circulation patterns align with the existing building to allow traffic between schools when necessary.

K-12 DESIGNGeorge McGovern Middle School

Koch Hazard is currently working with the Sioux Falls Schools District on a new middle school located on the northwest side of Sioux Falls. The school is an adaptation of Memorial Middle School, designed by Koch Hazard in 1995. It will be the second public school in Sioux Falls designed specifically for middle school students.

The Memorial Middle School design is proven, needing only minor revisions to accommodate the District’s current needs.

Enhancements from the previous middle school design include an auditorium, expanded commons and servery, and additional classrooms.

K-12 DESIGNThe Dakota Valley Fitness Center Addition and Stadium Improvements, named in memory of Robert L. Peterson, was designed to accommodate a growing athletics program. The design goals were centered around the health of students, the development of athletics, and increased community participation.

The Fitness Center consists of an athletics office, restrooms, lobby and reception space leading into a fully equipped fitness area. Designed with both a public entrance and easy access from within the existing building, this light-filled

addition can function independently of the school when needed.

The stadium entrance was designed to improve security and accommodate the increased flow of spectators at football and track events.

K-12 DESIGNThe Chester Area Schools needed new visitor and home team locker rooms to support their athletic program. There was a large, outdated space adjacent to the gymnasium that was identified for this function.

As part of this project, a modernized independent shop building was designed to accommodate a shop with large garage doors for vehicle related instruction. A new state of the art classroom, restrooms, office space, and a storage mezzanine were also part of the program.

K-12 DESIGNKoch Hazard worked with the rapidly growing West Central School District to identify a very cost effective scheme to replace condemned buildings and re-task remaining structures to create two excellent elementary schools and a middle school into which the high school could expand in the future.

The project began with the demolition of the existing outdated classroom building while retaining the newer gymnasium and kitchen addition. The new school wraps the existing gymnasium portion on three sides, creating a new entry, library and administration space along

the front and two classroom wings on the sides.

The classroom wings are divided into Kindergarten through Third Grade and Fourth Grade through Sixth Grade. Each wing is formed by classrooms centered around a core of restrooms, lockers and shared education spaces. Daylight is brought into the common areas through the use of skylights at the locker clusters and glass meeting rooms at the ends of the corridors. The new masonry on the exterior seamlessly integrates the existing gymnasium structure.

K-12 DESIGNFreeman Elementary School

The new Freeman Elementary school replaces a deteriorating and undersized 1925 building. The elementary school is connected to the existing junior/ senior high school, saving site acquisition costs and increasing the efficiency of district operations. The adjacency allows shared facilities and staff between the schools when necessary while maintaining a distinct separation between younger and older students during the school day.

The two-section addition provides classrooms, computer labs, a library, music room, gymnasium, cafeteria/ commons and support spaces for preschool through 6th grade students. The design complements the adjoining junior/ senior high school, and allows abundant light in the central commons and natural light in all classrooms. The school will accommodate expanded enrollment for the foreseeable future, and it is organized to allow additional expansion if necessary.
