Happy October! Happy New Year! Rosh HaShanah was the start of our new year, but I love that, as Jews, we continue to celebrate our fall holidays and festivals for almost an entire month, concluding with Simchat Torah. My family will tell you, I am a big fan of celebrating for a month, with each of us getting a month to enjoy our birthdays. So, it makes perfect sense to me to extend our Jewish New Year celebration.
Before I talk about October, I want to extend a huge yasher koach to our inspiring Rabbi Moskowitz, our always amazing Cantor Hass and all of our hardworking staff who provided us with the incredible calendar of services, as we celebrated our September High Holy Days. These are some of my most favorite days, joining with family, old friends and new friends (our community!) to hear the familiar prayers intersect in new ways, by our incredible clergy team. We thank you so much for providing us, once again, with sweet memories to carry us into the new year! I also would like to thank you, the congregation, who responded generously to our annual High Holy Day Campaign. If you haven't already it is not too late to send in your pledge to support the many ongoing services our temple home provides.
October brings us plenty of opportunities to celebrate with our temple community. We begin the month with the festivals of Sukkot and Simchat Torah. Much of Sukkot, the Festival of Booths, is celebrated at home with some of you building a sukkah in your yard. We will gather nightly to eat outside in our sukkah, enjoying our beautiful Southern California weather with family and friends. During this Sukkot, as we relax in our sukkah, please keep in mind those who have suffered losses during this brutal hurricane season. Many people have been left homeless and are now facing the daunting task of rebuilding their damaged communities. If you are looking for ways to help, contact the Temple Office for ideas.
Please join me at Temple on Wednesday, October 4th, as we come together as a community with a Sukkot Service and dinner. On the following Wednesday evening, October 11th, return to Temple as we rejoice in the Torah on Simchat Torah. During this celebratory service, we affirm our commitment to the ongoing study of Torah by reading the final lines of the Torah and immediately starting again, as we read the opening chapters of Bereshit (Genesis). Then, on October 20th our first “Got Shabbat” of the new year takes on a different tint, as everyone is encouraged to wear pink, as we observe breast cancer awareness month with our “ Pink Got Shabbat” in coordination with Sharsheret.
Soon you will be recieving the new JJL catalog, bursting with opportunities for learning and community in the upcoming year

ahead. We are fortunate to have such a diverse selection of scholars and speakers coming to our Temple to widen our perspective of the world. Thank you so much to the JJL patrons who make the JJL programs possible. I wanted to highlight a few of the opportunities that I am most excited about. This month we are privileged to have Dr. Ron Wolfson join us as our Lapid Scholar In Residence. I am currently reading his book, “Relational Judaism: Using the Power Of Relationships to Transform the Jewish Community”. He will share his insights with us the weekend of October 27-29. Check the weekly email for times and details of his sessions. In November we will have two opportunities to “travel” with field trips to an Israeli restaurant and a trip to LACMA. In December, we will be honored with a visit by Chris Steinhauser, LBUSD Superintendent. Then, in January we will host Mario Cordero, Executive Director of the Port of Long Beach. February offers us a panel, providing us insight into Jewish Life at CSULB, and in March we will greet Dr. Reagan Romani, Superintendent-President of LBCC. In April we will once again host “Future Focus” which will feature LA county Supervisor, Janice Hahn. May will bloom with Rabbi Sharon Brous, founder and senior Rabbi of IKAR as our Pilger Lecturer. Then in June we can look forward to a production of “Bagels,” the musical!
There are MANY more opportunities packed in the JJL catalog. I encourage you to open it up and write some dates on your calendar! As a matter of fact, this IS your gemilut chasadim (nurturing acts of loving kindness) challenge of the month! The nurturing this month is for yourself ! So often, we get so wrapped up in our lives of work, family and volunteerism that we forget to nurture ourselves. This month I would like you to pick something from our JJL catalog that appeals to YOU and write it (in ink) on your calendar. This gift, that you give yourself, may not occur this month, but you are committing to making it a reality by writing it down. There are so many opportunities for each of you in the upcoming year. Seek them out!
Happy October & Happy Opportunity Discovering!

Welcome to Temple Israel Jill Fisher Granek! Jill grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and is a Cal Berkeley alum. She moved to Long Beach in 1977 where she met and married her husband Ken in 1986. Jill worked in the area of development for 37 years and is now retired. She worked for the American Cancer Society for 33 of those years where she met several Temple Israel congregants who are volunteers and former colleagues.
Cooking and baking are one of Jill’s passions and on September 23rd, she entered the Long Beach Bakeoff where she took 2nd place in the pie division and 3rd among the cakes. We know she is a great baker, since she won two ribbons despite a “wild and bumpy ride” to the contest, where the cake fell over and the pie got crushed! We are looking forward to having Jill join our Purim hamentaschen bakers. We also know that she is a mensch, since she designated Temple Israel and JFCS as recipient of the prize money should she win! (Thanks Jill! Win or lose, that makes you a winner!)
Jill loves all genres of music- from opera to world music. She hopes to connect with other Temple Israel members to attend concerts. Jill also enjoys playing with her dogs Angel and Charlee and using social media to stay in touch with friends around the country.
Living around the corner from the Temple, and knowing some congregants already, Jill knew it was the right time to join. She is seriously considering joining Hebrew classes with the goal of becoming a Bat Mitzvah. We are so glad to have Jill as part of our congregation!

Anita was born in California and spent formative years in both San Diego and Fresno. She credits both cities with influencing her love, respect and appreciation for the beach, agriculture and a broad diversity of cultures and people. She has lived in various other cities in California throughout her adult life adding to her experiences as a true “Cali-girl.”
Anita has a deep love for God, family, friends, community and nature. She cares deeply for all aspects of Judaism; Torah, tradition, learning, spirituality, social action and creative expression through art, writing and music. She enjoys mornings, yoga, gardening, ethnic and regional cuisine, the arts, including film, poetry, literature, wit, humor and laughter…..life!

RPC MESSAGE
Simchat Torah means "Rejoicing in the Torah." This holiday marks the completion of the annual cycle of weekly Torah readings and also the beginning of the cycle of the Torah readings, reminding us that the study of Torah never ends. Judaism is alive and continues to live through our study, action, and commitment. We are the builders, carriers, and transporters. Not only is Judaism portable, it is also buildable in an endless cyclical
relationship. The cycle is timeless because the old message is also the new message. What other message can we get from Simchat Torah? “It is a tree of life to all who grasp it, and whoever holds on to it is happy; its ways are ways of pleasantness, and all its paths are peace. (Proverbs 3:17-18) It is one of the most joyous rituals in Judaism.
The Simchat Torah used to be a triennial (every three years) cycle. The one-year cycle was a custom of the Babylonian Jewish community. And it was not until the 8th century that the great majority of Jews adopted the annual system.
During the congregational celebration and service, the Torah scrolls are taken from the ark and carried by congregants around the synagogue seven times. During these seven circuits, or hakafot, those not carrying a Torah often will sing Hebrew songs. The hakafot are accompanied by singing and dancing, all of which symbolize the collective joy of Torah study and a commitment to lifelong Jewish learning.
BRING IT, BUILD IT, LIVE ITBy Jennette Fackler, VP Ritual Practices
One of the clergy members, opens the Torah and reads the last section of the fifth and final book of the Torah, D’varim (Deuteronomy). The entire scroll is rolled out with the help of the entire congregation. A second person then reads the opening section of the first book of the Torah, B’reishit (Genesis). The selection from D’varim tells of the death and legacy of Moses, the prophet and leader of the Jewish people. The reading from B’reishit, the very first words of the Torah, recounts the story of God’s creation of the world.
Each year, as we read the sacred text again, it can be as if we are reading it for the first time. Reading the same verses from the Torah each time creates the possibility of a new way of understanding. Today, discoveries in archeology, comparative religion, and linguistic analysis contribute to our understanding of Torah. Every generation of Jews has had its commentators. For our generation, the most significant development we have had is that women commentators have been contributing their insights and understanding of the sacred text.
In the last couple of weeks in September, 2017 (first couple of weeks of Tishrei), we carefully read and reviewed our own book of life before it was sealed. Then we began again to scribble our life on a clean page with our intentions, words, and actions.
This month October 12th (22 Tishrei 5778), we begin again to read from the most precious book in our possession, the Torah. Our joys are very well reflected and emphasized during Simchat Torah.

EXPERIENCE ISRAELby Bonnie Bachenheimer
You already know that I love the city in which I live. Modi’in is quiet, right in the center of Israel, has great public transportation, plentiful immigrant services and fabulous people.
Recently ESRA (English Speaking Residents’ Association) sponsored a meeting with Mayor Haim Bibas** to discuss Modi’in’s future. (Of course a meeting with the mayor is not unique to Israel. On my recent visit to Southern California I attended an informative talk and discussion with Mayor Garcia at a Rotary Club luncheon.)
Modi’in is an ancient city; the home of Judah Maccabee, who led the revolt in approximately 150 BCE (Hanukkah); and Modi’in is a brand-new city; the cornerstone to the first building being placed in 1993 and the first residents moving in during 1996.
Mayor Bibas answered questions about our new Central Bus Station (changes in the bus routes and schedules have upset many citizens); if we’re going to start identifying dog poo on the sidewalks by DNA test and fining the owners (probably); are we ever going to get a hospital (not until we reach 200,000 residents); and if there are plans for a hotel (Yes!).
Mayor Bibas remarked on a few things of which I am especially proud:• There are historic and archeological sites in the center, within
and around the city, offering evidence of settlements from 6,000 years ago.
• Our city budget is balanced without assistance from the national government.
• Over 94% of youth raised in Modi’in enter the IDF – one of the highest rates in the country!
• The Israel State Lottery (Mifal Hapais) is very successful in Modi’in (as it is throughout Israel). The money collected is used to build schools, clubhouses, senior centers, performing arts complexes, parks, playgrounds and swimming pools. Most public buildings in Modi’in are built with money raised by the lottery.
EXPERIENCE ISRAEL
JUNE 24 - JULY 6, 2018For thousands of years, the land of Israel has been for the Jewish people a dreamscape, a land of promise. Today it is a living dynamic reality: a place of rebirth for a language, a people, and a magnificent heritage. I invite you to join us on this extraordinary journey. This trip is open to all, so please feel free to invite friends and family. - Rabbi Steven Moskowitz
• Over half of the city budget is allocated to education.• Construction is progressing on a university and a water park.• 50% of the area within the city limits has been permanently
designated as green space. • We have “Extreme Park;” one of the largest skate parks in
the country.• Our population of approximately 95,000 people, is growing
at the rate of 3,000-4,000 persons per year.
Modi’in is a modern “planned” city with happy residents and a high standard of living. As of today we are well on our way to the long-term projection of 240,000 residents.
**Keep your eye on Haim Bibis. Quite a few (knowledgeable) people think he will one day be Israel ’s Prime Minister.

SOCIAL ACTION/ SABBATH FELLOWSHIP
TI IMMIGRATION FORUM EMPHASIZES HISTORY AND EMPATHYby Kate Schnoff, Social Action Committee
OCTOBER'S SABBATH FELLOWSHIPby Ann Martin
“A humane immigration system is not a partisan issue,” Congressman Alan Lowenthal, Temple Israel member and speaker at the August 27th Temple Israel Immigration Forum, emphasized.
His co-panelist, Rabbi Jonathan Klein, Executive Director of CLUE (Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice), underscored that "Our founding document as a people [tells us to] love the stranger because we were strangers in the land of Egypt."
An audience of 115 people from Temple Israel, other religious congregations and the community attended the forum, which was sponsored by the Temple Israel Social Action Committee. Board Member Deborah Fabricant moderated the conversation, reminding those gathered that “Abraham’s tent was open on four sides to show hospitality.”
Rabbi Klein provided a religious context for viewing immigration issues and an overview of Jewish immigration history.
The timing, purpose and character of each of the three major waves of Jewish immigrants to the United States was described by Rabbi Klein, as he painted a picture of our ancestors’ past struggles. He referenced the story of the S.S. St. Louis, a ship full of Jews fleeing Germany in 1938, which was refused entry in the U.S. and sent back to Germany - where 2/3 of the refugees perished. At the time, arguments that they would take up too many resources, or they might be communists, or spies, were made. Like other immigrants, Jews have come here to escape genocide, war, deprivation and religious persecution; but also, to pursue opportunities.
Rabbi Klein drew upon numerous connections to biblical and Talmudic text illustrating the role of Jews in supporting those in situations in which we found ourselves in the past. By and large, Jews in America “…are a successful community-but this moves us further from those who are struggling; we need
to keep ties with those who are vulnerable and struggling; we need to remember and empathize with that experience,” he said. Moving from the religious to the public policy front, Rabbi Klein provided updates on relevant California legislation and summaries of proposals being pursued by CLUE.
Rep. Lowenthal personally connected to this theme, revealing that, for him, "Being Jewish is having a social conscience and caring about other people.” He described two local Long Beach immigration cases for which his office has provided support.
He detailed what he called “a broken immigration system,” which, he explained, predated the current president and has evolved under both parties. There are three proposed pieces of legislation that Representative Lowenthal is supporting, which he said would help to improve the immigration system. One is the bi-partisan "Bridge Act," which would put some of the Delayed Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy into law. Considering the recent decision to end “…the DACA program, it is now more important than ever that we show compassion for and work to defend those who have come to our country in search of better lives,” Lowenthal later said in discussing the forum in his newsletter.
The Forum offered printed local resources to attendees (https://drive.google.com/f ile/d/0B-Tsz-R8q9r-SE9nNFAzVmh4dzQ/view?ts=59b9748d). Three local papers cited the event (http://www.signaltribunenewspaper.com/?p=35051).
The Social Action Committee(SAC) welcomes your participation! Join the SAC at our monthly meetings (Third Tuesdays of the month at 7:00 p.m.) and/or the Immigration subcommittee (Third Tuesdays of the month at 6:00 p.m). Contact the SAC chair, Myron Wollin ([email protected]) to be added to the email list and learn more.
The next Sabbath Fellowship service and luncheon is Saturday, October 7 the following Saturday after Yom Kippur. The service starts at 10:30 a.m., followed by the luncheon after the Kiddish. The entertainment for the luncheon will be the local band featuring husband and wife Marc and Pattie Davidson and their 4
piece band Second Wind, with an eclectic mix of lovely songs. For only $5, we'll have a full course meal plus the entertainment. I will host the luncheon and look forward to seeing many of our congregants and guests. Please RSVP by October 2 to Charmaine Weiner at [email protected]

TEMPLE ISRAEL’S 9-12 GRADE YOUTH GROUP
By Owen Sweeney, ANDI President
September was a superb month for ANDI. On September 16th, ANDI attended NFTY Southern California’s Fall Kallah, with the most participants, 19, in the region. Following Fall Kallah, on September 20th, ANDI held a beautiful Erev Rosh Hashanah service, led by our very own Religious and Cultural Vice President, Johanna Brown. The lovely service was followed by an ice cream social, and apple and honey tasting. It was a great way for us to get to know new and old ANDI members alike. This October, ANDI will host games and crafts after services on October 6th, so after services, stop by and challenge us to a game of Connect Four! Additionally, there will be an ANDI meeting, after Torah Center the following Sunday, October 15th in Alban Hall. All teens are invited to attend and share a lunch item with us.

THIS MONTH'S B'NAI MITZVAH
Hi, my name is Sean Solis. I'm a 13 year old, eighth grader at Leland Stanford Middle School. My Bar Mitzvah is on October 14th. Some of the things I like to do is wrestle, play outside and read.
For my Mitzvah Project, I helped coach kids from ages 4 to 8 learn how to wrestle at my wrestling club. Doing this was an honor to me because I was able to give back to the sport that has given so much to me.
My name is Maya Shafton and I'm having my bat mitzvah on October 21st. For my Mitzvah Project, I volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and the ECE at the JCC. I also volunteered for the Ava Mae Foundation, my friend's foundation to raise awareness for childhood cancer. We do bake sales and make care baskets for kids with cancer.
I am an 8th grade honors student at Oak Middle School. I love choir and am in the top two show choirs there. I also enjoy playing tennis
and hanging out with my friends. I'm very excited to have a bat mitzvah and become an adult in our community.

Join us for a unique and exciting opportunity coming to a congregation near you. (Temple Bat Yahm in Newport Beach)
For the first time ever, all URJ Communities are joining forces to offer a single URJ day of learning in multiple locations across North America.
On October 29th, "How Successful Congregations Embrace Change: A URJ Day of Learning" will take place simultaneously in multiple locations across four time zones. Each location will be hosted by a URJ Community lay leadership team, with the help of URJ staff, and will run parallel programs, enabling with discussions around changing landscape of our world and its implication on Jewish life.
This day of learning will also offer you a special taste of the URJ Biennial by livestreaming an interview with award-winning author and Biennial presenter Anita Diamant, who will be with us in person at our Boston-area event location. Her new book, The Jewish Wedding Now, will serve as a springboard for conversation, using the lens of Jewish lifecycle ritual to consider congregational change in the 21st century.
No matter which location you attend, you'll watch the live interview with Anita Diamant and have the opportunity to reflect on what you learn, to discuss the changing needs of congregational institutions with other leaders, and to begin identifying changes your congregation needs to make in order to be successful 21st-century institution.

SCIC’s 40th Annual “Festival of Music Benefit Concert”
For 40 years, the Long Beach interfaith community has been serenaded with music from a wide variety of cultures, religions, nationalities and genres at the SCIC’s “Festival of Music Benefit Concert.” You will have an opportunity to join in on this year’s melodious performance on Sunday, November 5th from 3 – 5 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 759 Linden Ave. in Long Beach. There is
no cost and everyone of all ages is welcome. Those who will be honored this year for their exemplary social justice advocacy are Sacred Resistance, Temple Baptist Church of Long Beach, Alice Robinson and Doctors on Wheels.
November will also be the season to celebrate SCIC’s 14th Annual Interfaith Unity Awards Dinner and Silent Auction. Several Temple Israel members have been honored at this gala in the past which will be held on November 14th, from 6 – 9 p.m. Details will follow. If you would like to donate a service or an offering, please contact Adriane Carton at the SCIC office (562) 983-1665.
