About Simply Chassidus
Simply Chassidus releases one ma’amar of the Rebbe each month with
English translation and commentary. Each ma’amar is divided into
three sections, each of which can be learned in approximately one
hour. By learning one section per week, usually on Shabbos morning,
participants can finish one ma’amar per month, with time to review the
ma’amar on Shabbos Mevarchim.
Simply Chassidus is written by Simcha Kanter and is a project of
Congregation Bnei Ruven in Chicago under the direction of Rabbi
Boruch Hertz.
The translation of the ma’amar was reviewed with Rabbi Fischel Oster
in the zechus of refuah shleima for .

Section One
The Rebbe said this ma’amar on Shabbos parshas Acharei in 5733
(1973), which was Shabbos Mevarchim Iyar. During this time of year
(from after Pesach until Rosh Hashanah) it is customary to learn a
chapter of Pirkei Avos each Shabbos after mincha, and this ma’amar is
based on the mishna which we say before learning each chapter.
The Mishna states, “Every Jew has a share in olam ha’ba (the World to
Come), as it says, ‘And everyone in your nation is tzaddikim; they shall
inherit the land forever; they are the growth of My planting, the work
of my hands in which I take pride.’”
The meaning of the term “olam ha’ba” is the subject of a debate among
the Rishonim (early commentaries). The Rambam states that it refers
to the spiritual world of gan eden (heaven), which is the world of souls,
while the Ramban states that it refers to the physical olam ha’techiyah
(“World of Resurrection”), when the souls will come back down into
physical bodies after the coming of Moshiach.
In the context of this Mishna, however, both opinions would agree on
the meaning of the term olam ha’ba:
The Mishna goes on to list a few “exceptions” of people who do not
have a share in olam ha’ba, and the first exception mentioned is
someone who doesn’t believe that the future resurrection has a source
in the written Torah. The Gemara explains that this person is punished
“measure for measure”: because he doesn’t believe in the resurrection
of the dead, he therefore will not be resurrected in olam ha’ba.
Therefore, we see that that the term olam ha’ba in this Mishna must
refer to the olam ha’techiyah.
Even though all Jews “qualify” for olam ha’techiyah (by default, unless
they take an action to be excluded as an “exception”), this same rule
does not apply to gan eden:
Rather than qualifying “by default”, there are certain requirements that
must be met in order to merit gan eden – even the lower level of gan
eden. (In general, gan eden is divided into two levels; the higher gan
eden and the lower gan eden.) This is why the possuk says, “Who may
ascend the ‘Mountain of Hashem’ [referring to gan eden]…? Someone
who has clean hands and a pure heart, etc.”
In contrast, (by default) all Jews qualify for olam ha’techiyah.
[Editor’s note: In addition to the fact that all Jews are qualified “by
default” for olam ha’techiyah, in other places it explains that even
people who would be considered as one of these “exceptions” actually
do have a portion in olam ha’ba.]
This contrast, however, seems inconsistent with the relative greatness
of these two “worlds”. The opinion of the Ramban (which reflects the
stance of Chassidus) is that olam ha’techiyah is greater than the
revelation of gan eden – even the higher level of gan eden, and even the
highest level within the higher level of gan eden!
Parenthetically, the Rebbe points out that the fact that olam ha’techiyah
is greater than gan eden is also obvious from the fact that souls from
even the greatest level of gan eden will be included in techiyas
ha’meysim (the resurrection of the dead):
When the resurrection of the dead will take place, all Jews – even the
ones who have spent thousands of years ascending three levels higher
within gan eden each day (during davening) – will descend into a
physical body. This clearly shows that olam ha’techiyah is higher than
even the highest level within gan eden.
This leads us to our first question:
Question One:
If olam ha’techiyah is greater than gan eden, why does a Jew need to
“qualify” for gan eden (which is lower) but is automatically qualified for
olam ha’techiyah (which is higher)?
In order to answer this question, we first explain why olam ha’techiyah
is greater than the revelation of olam ha’ba:
At first glance, we would assume the exact opposite is true:
In olam ha’ba, the soul experiences the revelation of G-dliness without
a limited physical body, while in olam ha’techiyah the soul exists within
a limited physical body. It would therefore seem to follow that the soul
would experience a greater revelation without the limitation of a
physical body.
Question Two:
Why is the soul able to experience the greatest revelation when it
exists within a limited physical body?
We attempt to answer this question by clarifying the state of the body
in olam ha’techiyah:
Seemingly, we could answer that the soul is able to receive this
tremendous revelation because the body will be refined to the
ultimate degree in olam ha’techiyah. Not only will it be refined to the
degree of the body of Adam HaRishon, whose body was “the work of
Hashem’s hands” (his body wasn’t the product of a biological mother
and father) and “made the sun appear dark [in comparison to its own
spiritual light]” – it will be refined to an even greater degree.
However, this doesn’t address the original question:
This answer explains how the soul will be able to receive a tremendous
revelation of olam ha’techiyah (which is even greater than the
revelation of gan eden) despite the fact that it will exist within a physical
body. However, it does not explain why the tremendous G-dly
revelation of olam ha’techiyah can only be experienced by souls as they
exist within a physical body.
The fact that the soul needs a physical body in order to experience this
tremendous revelation seems puzzling:
Even though the physical body will be refined to the ultimate degree
in olam ha’techiyah, it is still a physical body. By definition, physicality
is more limited than spirituality, as the limits of time and space (the
main limitations of creation) apply (mainly) to physicality. Therefore, it
would follow that the spiritual soul should be able to experience a
greater revelation on its own than when it exists within a limited
physical body.
Nevertheless, the fact is that the soul needs to descend into a physical
body in order to experience the revelation of olam ha’ba (olam
ha’techiyah).
We see that this increase in limitations (coming into the physical body)
which the soul needs to experience olam ha’techiyah is inconsistent
with how the soul transitions between the previous stages:
In order to transition from the physical world to the experience of gan
eden, the soul needs to separate itself from the physical experiences
which it had in the physical world. This is represented by the soul’s
spiritual immersion in the Dinor River, a river of fire which causes it to
forget the sensations that it experienced in the physical world.
Similarly, in order to transition to a higher level within gan eden, it
undergoes a similar process which causes it to forget the sensations
which it experienced at the lower level of gan eden. [This process of
“erasing” the prior experiences is necessary because the higher level is
incomparably higher than the previous level, and any connection
(and comparison) to the lower level would prevent the soul from
experiencing the incomparably greater revelation.]
However, the next step seems inconsistent with this pattern of
“separating from limitations in order to reach a higher level”: in order
to experience the even greater revelation of olam ha’ba, the soul
needs to have a greater connection to the limits of physicality by
existing within a physical body.
We are therefore left with our original question (question two):
Why does the soul experience the greatest revelation specifically
when it exists within a limited physical body?
In order to answer this question, the Rebbe first explains the
significance of the body and soul as they are represented within the
Torah itself:
The Torah is compared to a person, as the possuk says, “This is the
Torah – a man.” (This is a non-literal reading of the possuk. The simple
translation is, “This is the law: a man, if he dies in a tent…”) Just as a
person is made up of a body and soul, so too the Torah has a “body”
and “soul”. In general, these two concepts are represented as Torah
and mitzvos.
The 248 positive mitzvos are referred to in the Zohar as the “248 limbs
of the King” because they are similar to the body, while Torah is the
“blood” (the “soul”) which brings life to the “limbs” of the mitzvos (which
is why the Torah explains the precise details of their proper
performance).
This difference between Torah (the soul) and mitzvos (the body)
explains why the limits of time and space only apply to mitzvos:
Mitzvos are the “body” of Torah, and since a “body” is physical, the
limits of time and space apply to it. This is why mitzvos are within the
limits by time and space (as shown by the fact that many mitzvos must
be performed at a specific time and in a specific manner, often with
objects that meet specific guidelines). On the other hand, the learning
of Torah is the “soul” of Torah, and the spiritual “soul” is not limited by
time and space.
For example, in order to bring a korban olah, it must be brought from
a kosher animal, during the day, by a Kohen, in the Bais HaMikdash,
etc. However, the Gemara says that “whoever occupies himself with
learning the laws of a korban olah, it is as if he has brought a korban
olah” – even though he isn’t a Kohen and doesn’t meet any of the other
time- or place-based restrictions. We see from this that the learning
of Torah (the soul) is beyond the limits of time and space.
This concept also applies to a Jew who learns Torah and performs
mitzvos: since the mitzvos are the “body” of the Torah and learning
Torah is the “soul” of the Torah, a Jew’s learning of Torah is mainly
connected to his soul (learning is a more spiritual activity), while his
performance of mitzvos is mainly connected to his body (as mitzvos
are performed with the physical body).
In the next section, the Rebbe will compare the relationship between
Torah and mitzvos to the overall advantages of physicality vs.
spirituality.
