It is with great pleasure that I announce the permanent appointment of Miss Brodie Merrett to Kootingal Public School. Miss Merrett will assume the position that will be vacated by Mrs Heather Simpson at the end of the 2020 school year. Miss Merrett trained at the University of Newcastle and comes from an early childhood background through to year six. It is hoped Miss Merrett will be able to spend some time with the students and staff of Kootingal Public School prior to the commencement of her duty in 2021. With this permanent appointment now secured myself in the executive team will look towards establishing our staff against our class composition for next year. If your family is potentially changing plans in 2021, please let the school know so we can adjust our plans accordingly.

This week Dr Kate Bricknell attended Kootingal Public School to conduct workshops in writing with our students in years 2 and 4. Each semester we have a different focus on year groups. In semester 1, we focus on years 3 and 5 in preparation for the NAPLAN assessment. In semester 2, we focus on years 2 and 4 in the lead up to the NAPLAN assessment. Our students are becoming more accustomed to the writing process as it is a focus area each week within our English lessons, in particular. Dr Bricknell presented to the staff the final hour of their professional learning around visual literacy. Visual literacy is an important component of the English syllabus with its own specific language and techniques. Our students have enjoyed experiencing multimodal texts with even our kindergarten children enjoying learning about and applying their knowledge of camera shots and angles.

Last week our students in years 3 and 5 undertook the School Readiness Test (SRT). This test mimicked the manner in which students will undertake NAPLAN online in 2021. This was a test for Kootingal Public School to ensure we are ready to go to administer NAPLAN online. Thank you to Miss Kelly and Miss Bennett for their coordination and administration of the test. At the conclusion of the test, Miss Bennett sought feedback from our students in relation to their experience. All in all, everyone learned a lot.

This week Mrs Dunn took delivery of the alternate summer uniform for girls. This uniform will be available at the start of the 2021 school year. Please note this does not replace the dress. Girls will have two options from which to choose. Should you have any inquiries, please direct these to Mrs Dunn in the front office.

Thank you to Mr Foody and Mr Loftus for the hanging of some of our PBL signs throughout the school. The PBL team made the decision to install each of the signs as the areas are taught in the weekly PBL lessons. I am sure everyone will agree that the signs look fabulous.

This week, our PBL focus is examining the expectations when using the cricket nets and sports shed. Our cricket nets get used for a variety of purposes by our students, not just for cricket practice or a quick game of hit and run. The nets have known to be used for pitching practice during softball season as well as a corral for horse games. Our specific expectations for the cricket nets are: • Only one person in the nets • Play appropriately • Take turns • Share school equipment and use correctly • Return equipment

We have a secondary focus as well this week with students learning about the expectations when using the sports shed.

Our sports shed is under the care of our Year 6 sports captains. Our specific expectations for the sports shed are: • Only students with teacher permission in sports shed • Line up • Speak politely • Share school equipment and use correctly • Return equipment

Please remember the expectations for all areas apply as well to both the cricket nets and sports shed. For example, follow teacher instructions. When we teach the expectations of the specific areas, we are also looking at the expectations for all areas as well. Below is our termly scope and sequence.

Week 4 Revise Oval / New concept Hall
