!Congratulations to our swimmers who competed last Friday at the Tamworth Zone Swimming Carnival at Scully Park. Particular congratulations to Jessie Johnson of Year 3 (pictured with Colbie Butler) who was successful in selection to the North West regional trial. Jessie knocked 4 seconds off her personal best in the 50m freestyle. Well done Jessie! !Toys are often the best friends of children and provide a comfort factor while at school. Unfortunately, there are times when these are misplaced, taken or damaged. At Kootingal Public School, we actively discourage the bringing of these precious items to school for these very reasons. Pokemon cards, like any toy, is a big craze at present. It is imperative we all understand that Kootingal Public School does not condone the trading or swapping of Pokemon cards at school. If this is an activity children wish to participate in then it is something to do under parental supervision. Students found participating in the swapping or trading of cards will be counselled on such matters and managed under the five whole school expectations. !Last week, we held our first trial of our new bell system while performing a lockdown. Each term, Kootingal Public School practises a lockdown and emergency evacuation in cases of emergency. Over the summer holidays, we installed a new bell system to cater for these cases of emergency, as our existing system was not conducive to our needs. We have an additional functionality in that we now have a microphone for announcements that resonates across our school grounds. This has proved very useful for chess club and wet weather announcements. If you here our new bell system, please do not be alarmed as in most cases these are practice drills. !This week, students from Tamworth High School commenced the teaching of a Fundamental Movement Skills program with our Kindergarten students. The students from Tamworth High School are completing this activity as a part of the course Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS). The students coach their younger counterparts in the 12 Fundamental Movement Skills. This week, the students focused on skipping, jumping and running. Each group of students designed the teaching activities. Needless to say, our students thoroughly enjoyed themselves, learning movement skills and getting to know more ‘big’ people. Thank you to Tamworth High School and Mrs Dixie Ernst, teacher of the PASS class, for coming to Kootingal Public School to teach our students. We look forward to seeing you more over the coming weeks.

!As previously stated, I would communicate further with our school community about a resolution for the swallow bird issue once more information was gathered. Next week, I have a meeting with Mr Justin Ferris regarding this issue and possible methods of resolution. I will update the community after this meeting. !Kootingal Public School is again coordinating the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) tests. ICAS is an independent, skills-based assessment program that recognises and rewards student achievement. This program is an international program that has operated for the past 30 years. Students from years 2 to 6 are eligible to participate. Nomination forms are available from the front office area and on our website under Latest News and Features. I coordinate the tests and the dates for each test are located on the form and on our school website calendar.

!Our PBL lessons are focusing on the third core value Effective Learners. Mrs Cracknell composed this week’s lesson and focuses on how we can be effective learners in all spaces. !Next week, we commence our learning on the five whole school expectations. These expectations are designed for consistency across the entire school. The new expectations are 1. Keep you hands, feet and objects to yourself 2. Follow teacher instructions 3. Accept consequences 4. Report issues to teachers immediately 5. Show concern for others. !The signs picture below are present across our school and are widely. !!

Week 3 Chinese New Year was celebrated at

Sherpa Kids by making fantastic dragons and lanterns, enjoying fried

rice and learning about The Year of the Rooster.

During Week 4, Healthy Inside and Out,

we learned about Sweetheart Day. We made our own Fruit Salad Ice cream Cup with Yoghurt toppings as well as playing

an old favourite game, Stuck in the Mud.

Week 5 was all about Gravity. What is Floating Arms?

Scientists call this the

Kohnstamn Phenonemon. With your arms next to your sides, hold onto your clothes

tightly. Pull outwards, keeping arms straight. Pull hard for 30 seconds and gently let go of hands. Arms should rise up

outwards, slowly by themselves.

Discovery Week is on at the moment, with great experiments

such as what makes the best bubble blower? We discovered 3 cable ties hooked together, work

well, and bubble bath liquid is great too. Gargling water while singing

the school song was very impressive. On Wednesday we are making our own sundials. Thursday

we are cooking cheese and vegemite snails as well as learning

some cool snail facts. Did you know that a garden snail’s top speed is

1.3cm per hour? On Friday, how tall ARE you? is a priority. Using our

new height measurer will show us the facts..
