Sidney Fadi, Kouga se munisipale bestuurder, was ge-

skok om van die “Coke-kleurige” water te hoor. “Geenwaterprobleem is by my aangemeld nie.

– CaraLee Scheun

THE release of the 2014/15 crime statis-tics by the South African Police revealsthat crime is on the increase in JeffreysBay.Some 69 cases of burglary at non-resi-

dential premises (business) were report-ed, a 73% increase from 2013/14.Robbery at non-residential premises

also increased by 80%over the same timeperiod.Surprisingly there has been a de-

crease in burglary and robbery ofhomes, with 15 fewer cases of burglarybeing reported. There is still more than one house a

day being burgled in Jeffreys Bay (463cases). This statistic only refers to inci-dents that were reported to the police.Eleven murders took place in Jeffreys

Bay, with 12 attempted murders - a 100%increase from the last reporting period. Most categories of violent crimes are alsoon the increase in Jeffreys Bay.Unfortunately the crime stats have to

be queried as, according to the documentreleasedbypolice commissionerGeneralRiah Phiyega, not a single motor vehiclewas stolen in Jeffreys Bay during the re-porting period. The crime statistics for the entire East-

ernCape reveal anomalies that cannot beexplained. Figures published last yeardiffer from the comparative figures pub-lished this year for the 2013/14 reportingperiod.

Somelittle boy isdreamingofhis first everNinjaTur-tle toy, while another girl cannot wait to go tochurch with her new hair accessories. Thereare even practical wishes like stationary forschool. These cards are displayed on theChrist-mas tree in the forecourt atPick `nPay inFoun-tains Mall.Residents are able to select the wish card or

cards that appeal to themandbuy the giftswrit-

ten on the cards. Residents can either wrap thepresents themselves, or have themwrapped bythe Kouga Express team. The learner’s name, age and grade must be clearly marked on thepresent. Each card is unique to a deservingchild, and so if a card is taken and not returnedthen it means that a learner could miss out ona present for Christmas.Presents can be dropped off at either theKou-

CELEBRATING your 70th birthday on themighty Zambezi River and your 20th weddinganniversary with a bottle of ice cold cham-pagne in the middle of the bush will leavemany green with envy.

Combine this with secretly taking videofootage of a highly organised diesel-stealingsyndicate and being transported to the worldof Mowgli in the famous Walt Disney chil-dren’s bookTheJungleBook andyouhave theperfect “ingredients” for the next best-sellerHollywood movie. But for travellers Paul andMaria Eberhard from Aston Bay this is notnear enough. Always on the search for thenext adventure they added a warm cup of cof-fee in the heart of the Makgadigadi Pans, evading speeding truck drivers and crossingthe river themselves into Botswana for thefirst time to the mix – the perfect getaway.

WithMonty, their trusted truck, in top con-dition, the Eberhards embarked on yet ano-ther journey at the beginning of May – thistime they took the road to Zambezi in Botswa-na. On their return home at the end of June,Monty showed that they travelled exactly 10000km. They did not suffer one mechanical orhealth-relatedproblem for the entire trip –noteven a flat wheel or a cold.

From Jeffreys Bay, the Eberhards pointedMonty’s nose in the direction of the Kruger

National Park where they co-incidentally re-united with a German couple who they hadonly briefly met before in Jeffreys Bay. “Thefriendship was instant and we continued ourtwo-week –long journey on ourway toFrancisTown in Botswana together,” says Paul. “Aswe neared Botswana it was time to part. Theycontinued towardsZimbabwe, whilewedrovein the direction of Botswana.”

For the first time, after trying many timesbefore, the Eberhards could slowly navigateMonty across the muddy 3m wide river-bor-der crossing Pont Drift fromMusina into Bot-swana – another tick on their bucket list. When the river is in flow, vehicles can onlycross with a cable car.

Once in Francis Town, they took the roadto Orapa where they decided to cross the ma-jestic snowwhiteMakgadigadi Pans – driving90km through bush and sand with only theirGPS to guide them. “Sleeping and enjoying acup of warm coffee in the middle of the sandpan is a majestic moment I will not easily for-get,” says Paul.

Leaving the sand pans behind them, theEberhards followed the road to Nata, Kasane,Livingstone, Lusaka (the capital of Zambia)and Goma. Here they were shocked to see ev-ery 10km to 15km truck drivers from reputa-ble companies selling diesel to people alongthe road holding 20l plastic drums. “We foundout that companies lose up to 10 000l of dieselper month due to this illegalities going on.

People here aremaking a living from it,” saysPaul who took video footage of some of the“transactions”.

From Goma they headed towards Copper-veld on the border of theDemocratic Republicof Congo. “Following the border from Ndolato Solwezi we came across the most horribleroads littered with potholes. It is even worsethan the roads in Jeffreys Bay,” says Paul. Ontheirway toSolwezi, theypassedLumbabashiand Gengola where hundreds of speedingtruck drivers came flying by so close toMontythat Paul had to turn his side mirror inwardsto avoid being hit.

From Solwezi they carried down to theirgoal town, Zambezi. “What a disappoint-ment,” says Paul. “The town is very dirty andwe could hardly find a place to stay. There areno shopping facilities and only one petrol sta-tion that is ridiculous with its prices. We leftafter one day.”

Travelling towards Mongu, the Eberhardscrossed the Kabombo River with an old dieselengine ferry where Monty just fitted on.“Crossing over was like being transportedright into the Jungle Book. We were right inthemiddle of the riverwhen the sunwas goingdown. It was absolutely fantastic,” says Paul.

The very next day, Paul celebrated his 70thbirthday on the Zambezi River - a traditionthat goes back many years. He celebrated his60th birthday on theNile River, while his 50thbirthday saw him on the Orange River. “Who

knows where I will be for my 80th birthday?”Their journey furthermore included Kati-

ma Mulilo, Nata, Maun, Ghanzi, and Verdawhere they attempted to enter South Africatowards Toska but the road was so bad thatthey had to give up after driving amere 15km.They continued towards Bokspits where theycrossed the border to Upington and travelleddown to Port Elizabeth on their way back toAston Bay.

At forefront of technologyAfer seeing some of his work captured withaGoPro4with 4k setting and a Panasonic filmcamera with 4k setting, one of the world’s fa-mous producers of film accessories, proDAT,approached Paul to test their newprogrammecalled PowerDirector14 for free.

Venter saysmany children left with cuts.“We have takena decision to cancel all trails and major contests at thisvenue until we are satisfied that all the criteria of a BlueFlag beach have been met,” says Venter.“Prior to the event taking place this year, it took the JBUSurf Club three weeks to clean the area and make it pre-sentable to visitors and competitors. This is not the first time that the NMBS trials at KitchenWindows had to be moved to another venue. In 2014 twoof their trials also had to bemoved due to sewage, brokenglass and rubbish.According to Kouga Municipal spokesperson, Laura-Leigh Randall, the municipality was not aware of the sit-uation until the Kouga Express contacted them for infor-mation in this regard. “The matter was not reported toany of the relevant municipal departments,” says Ran-dall.“Wewill follow-up on the complaint as amatter of urgen-cy in order to prevent this from happening again in fu-

ture.”DA councillor Brenton Williams says that sewage spillson the beach at KitchenWindows began in the late 1990s.“The surf community has been concerned about thesespills for a very long time and as the infrastructure fur-ther deteriorated, the spills have become more frequent. We even have sewage spills at the Checkers beach andKabeljauws nowadays.“Dolphin Beach is our prize asset and one of the bestswimming beaches in the world. It cannot be allowed tobecome a no-go zone where families feel uncomfortableand surf contests cannot be held.”According toWilliams, the DA believes that a holistic ap-proach towards the entire main beach area needs to tak-en. “The infrastructure must be upgraded to an accepta-ble level to prevent sewage spills, a dedicated team ofbeach cleaners must be appointed and the beach gradermust be utilised to clean up broken glass and litter, aswas done in the past. Furthermore, lifeguards and lawenforcement officials must be on the beach all yearround,” says Williams.

AFTER an absence of two years,Milk Thistle(Silybum marianum) is back on shelf as anon-scheduled product.

Quick off the mark, NRF Health, well-known for its large range of excellent qualitysupplements, has introduced its new NRFMilk Thistle with Dandelion supplement.Milk Thistle has been around for over 2 000

years and its use as a liver tonichas beenwelldocumented. It is also known to increase ap-petite, aid in digestion byworking as a select-ive antioxidant in liver cells and can beused raw in salads.Milk Thistle, however, is better

known for its medicinal benefitswhich help in the treatment ofliver and gall bladder diseases, jaundice, cirrhosis, hepatitisand poisoning. Milk Thistle sti-mulates the flow of bile from theliver and supports healthy diges-tion and liver function. Silymarinand silybin, found inMilk Thistlewhich is a member of the sunflow-er family, functions as antioxidants whichhelp to protect cell membranes from free-ra-dical-mediate, oxidative damage. These twocompounds help protect red blood cell mem-branes against lipid peroxidation and hemol-ysis (breaking down of the red blood cells)caused by certain red blood cell poisons.Milk Thistle is considered one of the safest

herbs on themarket and has an unblemishedsafety record when used responsibly. The

most common side effects may be an upsetstomach or mild diarrhoea, as Milk Thistlecan have a mild laxative effect.Dandelion (taraxacum officinale) is anoth-

er herb which helps to treat intestinal andvarious other problems like gallstones, jointpain, muscular aches and eczema. It is alsoused as a blood tonic and can help with skintone and bruising. Dandelion contains chem-icals that increase urine production and de-crease inflammation. When used as a food, dandelion is often used as a salad green, insoups or made into wine, and teas and in

some cases, the roasted root is used asa coffee substitute.

A potent combination of NRFMilk Thistle with Dandelionmakes this supplement extraeffective to assists in the treat-ment of mild liver conditions.NRF Milk Thisitle with Dande-

lion is available fromDis-Chemandselected pharmacies for aroundR90 a packof 60 tablets.

Is it a Bird? Is it a Plane? – What could it be?The answer is on theMothHall stagewith theannual Uitenhage Melodrama, which thisyear it aptly titled “Stoopid Hearohs”.

Surely by now everyone has heard of theSuperman and Batman stories, but unfortu-nately this will be of no help when it comesto what Uitenhage has to offer in their 2015edition of the popular melodrama. This year it is the turn of Uitenhage’s own

“Distrik Six” comprising of Henry, Davidand George and a group of their “sooper” tal-ented friends to entertain the masses. Theplan is to stop the evil antics of the EksdomAvenger and his two cronies, Load-Sheddingand Anne-MMU.Poor Planet Klipdrift is on its last legs as

far as power is concerned and decisions havebeen made to take over a neighbouring jewelthat will solve this crisis. But the question iswho will have the best group to ensure that

their side will win? This year’s Melodrama is again brought to

Round Table Uitenhage 14 and Lions Uiten-hage. Like previous years, this year is goingto be another event of laughter and fun. Thepublic are invited to join in the fun and sup-port these social clubs in their efforts tomakea positive change in the community of Uiten-hage and Despatch. There will be a “Peanut Free” evening to-

morrow evening (Friday, October 2nd). Therest of the shows are peanut evenings:Satur-day (3rd), Friday (9th) and Saturday (10th).All shows start at 19:30, but if the Bokke taketo the rugby stage, the shows will start a bitlater.
