The beach in Cape St Francis was awarded pilot status. This was revealed at the National Blue Flag event held on Tuesday 6 October. This is the first time in the Blue Flag initia- tive’s 15 years that beaches not only received Blue Flag status, but some of them were also awarded either gold, silver or bronze certifi- cates. The Blue Flag is not the only accolade that Dolphin Beach has received over the past few years. For the last two years, Dolphin Beach came out tops in a summer survey conducted by The Herald of beaches in its coverage area. Dolphin Beach is also rated highly by visitors on web-based tourism sites. “There are seldom sewerage spills at Dol- phin Beach, especially since the upgrade of the La Mer pump station last year,” says Kou- ga Municipal spokesperson Laura-Leigh Ran- dall. “Even before the upgrade, the municipa- lity had a contingency plan in place to ensure that any contamination of the beach area would be minimised in the event of a sewer- age spill. The fact that Dolphin Beach passed the Blue Flag test year after year is proof of the success with which the contingency meas- ures could be implemented. The Blue Flag is an international award and is evaluated by an independent judging panel who will not hesitate to withhold Blue Flag status from a beach that does not pass their tests. One can, therefore, safely say that Dolphin Beach has earned its Blue Flag status - there are no short cuts. The municipality will continue to do all in its power to maintain that status.” According to Randall, the Blue Flag boosts tourism growth as it is a form of quality assur- ance for visitors, especially the overseas mar- ket. “The programme further allows Kouga the opportunity to work with experts in the field of coastal and environmental management, which means that the management practices in place at Dolphin Beach are comparable to the best in the world,” says Randall. In order to develop the Cape St Francis beach into a Blue Flag beach, new ablution facilities closer to the bathing area, as well as a first-aid room and lifeguard hut will be constructed. A boardwalk will furthermore be built for easier access to the beach. The beach and facilities also need to be disabled friendly. THE Kouga Municipality and the Kouga Wind Farm aretaking hands to build a library at Sea Vista, St FrancisBay.

At a special Council meeting on October 12, the KougaCouncil resolved to make land available at Sea Vista fora library.

The construction of the library will be funded by theKouga Wind Farm to the tune of R1,7-million.

All councillors were in agreement that the libraryshould be centrally located to cater for all residents ofthe greater Sea Vista area.

“We want it to be located as close as possible to thecommunity so that children in particular can visit it withease,” says Social Services Portfolio Councillor Thande-ka Maseti.

Two possible pieces of land were identified. The Coun-

cil agreed that the library should either be constructedon the same erf as the community hall or on the openerf opposite the hall.

Councillor Maseti applauded the Kouga Wind Farm forits commitment to supporting education through theconstruction of a library.

“The Council had identified Sea Vista as one of the are-as to receive a modular library. The Kouga Wind Farm’ssupport will make it possible for us to establish a libraryin Sea Vista and take the modular library to another com-munity where this service is needed.”

Kouga Municipality will be responsible for any rezo-nings, if necessary, as well as the building plans.

As the municipality renders library services on behalfof the provincial Department of Sport, Recreation, Artsand Culture (DSRAC), it will further engage with DSRACregarding the operational requirements of the library.

IT is that time of the year again when matriculantsprepare to take on the biggest task of their school life- the final matric examinations.

It is a defining moment for the learners as they seekto overcome that one last hurdle before opening awhole new chapter of their young lives.

On behalf of the Kouga Council, I would like to wishthe young ones all the best in their exams.

Please go ahead, knowing you have support fromyour family, friends, teachers and the rest of the com-munity. Trust in the Almighty to give you strengthto pull through.

Many of you may be quite anxious during this peri-od. That is understandable due to the importance ofthe exams, but do draw strength from knowing thatwe are all thinking about you.

It is our duty as parents, teachers, family and

friends to lend all the material and emotional supportto our matriculants.

These young people are the future of our land andit is only right that we invest positively towards thatfuture.

Our matrics have worked hard to get to where theyare and they must continue to work harder until thelast paper has been written.

In the process, some may not do as well as theywould have liked and some may stumble and fail.

What matters, is knowing that you have given it yourall and drawing valuable lessons from the whole experi-ence which you may use to succeed the next time.

As the Kouga Council, we guarantee you uncondi-tional support and we are proud that you have madeit this far in life. With the right attitude, you can beanything you want to be. Don’t be afraid to dream big,the sky is the limit.

EVERY year, during October’s Breast CancerAwareness month, there’s a flurry of prettypink mushroom punnets on Pick ’n Pay’sshelves. Why? To drive awareness of the potentially

protective role mushrooms can play in thefight against breast cancer and to raise fundsto purchase silicone breast prostheses for dis-advantaged women who cannot afford eitherthe cost of silicone breast prostheses nor re-constructive surgery after a mastectomy. One of the key findings of studies research-

ing the cancer fighting potential of mush-rooms from the Beckman Institute at the Cityof Hope Cancer Centre in California and theUniversity of Australia in Sydney in collabo-ration with Zhejiang University in China, isthat women who eat an average of 10gm ofmushrooms a day, seem to halve their risk ofbreast cancer – a brilliant reason for womento make sure that mushrooms take centrestage on their plates every day of the year.

TheSouthAfricanMushroomFarmers’As-sociation (SAMFA)with Pick ’n Paywill onceagain launch The Power of Pink promotionin October 2015.R1 from each punnet of 250g whole and

sliced white button mushrooms sold duringOctober will be donated to the breast cancersupport group, Reach for Recovery who willthenmake these available towomenwho can-not afford to purchase them.Silicone breast prostheses from Reach for

Recovery cost between R850 and R1500 (sub-stantially more in the open market) and theyare made available to those in need for a frac-tion of the price. So, head to your nearest Pick ’n Pay today,

go big on the pink punnets and spread theword knowing that you’ll not only be help-ing those affected by this devastating dis-ease but you’ll also be protecting yourselfby adding good for you mushrooms to yourdaily diet.

tionwithPick `nPay andFountainsMall, willbe collecting gifts for the 343 deservinglearners at King’s College in Pellsrus, Jef-freys Bay. The Kouga Express relies on thegenerosity of the community to satisfy the de-mand for presents.Without the generous sup-port of local residents this appeal will fail. Each learner wrote his or her wish onto a

special Christmas “wish card”, with theirnames and age.Wishes range fromnail polishto a guitar and from an art set to a Barbie doll. Some little boy is dreaming of his first everNinja Turtle toy or a ball, while another girlcannotwait to go to churchwithher newhairaccessories. There are even practical wisheslike stationary for school. These cards aredisplayed on the Christmas tree in the fore-court at Pick `n Pay in Fountains Mall.

How it worksResidents are able to select the wish card orcards that appeal to them and buy the giftswritten on the cards. Residents can eitherwrap the presents themselves, or have themwrapped by the Kouga Express team. Thelearner’sname, ageandgrademust be clearlymarked on the present. Each card is uniqueto a deserving child, and so if a card is takenand not returned, it means that a learnercould miss out on a present for Christmas.Presents can be dropped off at either the

Kouga Express’s office at 75 Da Gama Roadin Jeffreys Bay or at Pick `n Pay. All thepresents must be returned by November 25.The presents will be handed out to thelearners at a special Christmas party at theschool on December 4.For more information, contact Monique

Basson at 042 293 2973 or send an email [email protected].
