first people to swim8kmaroundCapeStFrancis andSharkPoint in April 2014 in a time of 3 hours and 3 minutes.Hewas also the youngest swimmer (15) to complete the
5kmShipwreck swim in 11°Cwater held along the Bloub-erg coastline in Cape Town in December 2012.Wright has a number of ambitions in openwater swim-

SOME 24 South African surfers will take tothe waves during the JBU Supertrial fromJune 1 to 12 in the hope to claim the wildcardentry into round one of the world-class JBayOpen Surf League event.
The JBU Supertrial, presented by RVCA,will adhere to a strict selection process andsurfers will have to comply with specific en-try requirements.
Last year the event was won by local surferDylan Lightfoot, who went on to competeagainst Kelly Slater in Round 1 and GabrielMedina in Round 2 of the JBay Open, gainingvaluable world tour experience.The event is a JBUSurfClubevent, andclub

visiting specialists,whichwill also beusedbyhealth careworkers to assist chronic patients in taking theirmedica-tion. The health care workers will be based at the facilityon a full-time basis.“Patients will no longer have to wait in the rain, sun
or wind when visiting the mobile clinic,” says Kani.“In addition, there is a toilet facility which was not
available before. Apart from health workers attending tochronic patients, the elderly and gravely ill will havetrained workers attending to their needs.”

After hearing about the plea for a kitchen from friendsin St Francis Bay, Jaap andCorrie Tukker from theNeth-erlands opened their hearts and wallets to make thisdream come true for the children of Sea Vista.
“Upon retirement I decided that instead of receivingbottles of wine or expensive gifts, I want to do good with
themoney,” says Jaap. “I can think of no greater satisfac-tion than being able to help feed 315 children on a dailybasis. Not only is it good for the children, but also forthe future of the people. I am very proud of this projectof which we had the privilege to be part of.”
The newkitchenwas officially handed over by theTuk-kers to school principal Charles Coenraad last Thursday.
According to Coenraad, the kitchen is a dream cometrue. “The previous made-shift kitchen was so small thatonly one person could fit in the room at any given timeand the cooks had to stand outside to wash the dishes.Now, we have ample space and equipment under oneroof.”

cost of installing this satellite broadcast tech-nology at six high schools, situated in Jef-freys Bay, Humansdrop, Hankey and Paten-sie.“Wewould like to provide learnerswith the
opportunity to improve their competency andaptitude in mathematics and science, so thatthey can progress higher in the educationchain,” says Marion Green-Thompson, Eco-nomic Development Manager for JeffreysBay Wind Farm.“Broadcasts certainly do not replace the
teachers orwhat should behappening in class– it is simply an after school support pro-gramme, similar to extra tutorials to betterequip learners, most of whom don’t have ac-cess to funds for additional tutoring.”Some Eastern Cape high schools are part of
a national network of schools that are benefit-ing from the afternoon satellite broadcasts ofadditional lessons that aremade from the stu-dio at Stellenbosch University’s TelematicServices.The extra classes are all arranged, sche-
duled and presented by theWestern Cape De-partment of Education, in line with the coun-try-wide curriculum. Learners are able to re-spond to or ask questions of the presenter instudio, via a web platform, with an SMS ora WhatsApp message. Through the web plat-form teachers can also download all the pre-sentations and other resources. The WesternCape Education Department also provideworkbooks that canbeusedduring thebroad-casts.These direct and interactive satellite
broadcasts are broadcast to approximately 66Eastern Cape schools, 107 in the NorthernCape, 146 in the Western Cape and 5 in otherprovinces that require the installation of de-coders and satellite dishes to be installed atthe schools.A monitoring and evaluation plan is part
of this project, which helps Stellenbosch Uni-versity to thoroughly analyse learners’marks, the schools’ context as well as feed-back from the learners, teachers and princi-pals about the impact of the programme.Schools that have benefited include Lungi-

TO compete in an Ironman event takes hoursof training, dedication, determination andhard work. All the training athletes gothrough to prepare for the event developsphysical strength, emotional resilience aswell as mental fortitude.
It is widely understood that it is necessaryfor athletes to be at their peak to participatein the event. Even if athletes are not in topform, their training programme for the Iron-man can assist in improving their health andphysique and also mental well-being.The event hosts many participants who
never thought theywouldonedayparticipatein, or complete, an Ironman. Some partici-pants challenged themselves to improvetheir lifestyle, lose weight and take controlof their health.One such athlete isDawidMouton, 28, from
Theresa Park in Pretoria. He says that parti-cipating in the Ironman changed his life. “Itmade me stop smoking and drinking exces-sively. I also lost 25kg.”Ross Lutsch, 32, from Arcadia in Pretoria
admits to enjoying life on the couch beforeparticipating in Ironman. He aims to com-plete the race in a “reasonably good time”,and his personal victory lies in losing a thirdof his bodyweight in a littlemore than a year.Luvuyo Bangazi, 38, of Lovemore Heights
in Port Elizabeth tipped the scales at 117kg.In 2013 he volunteered at the Ironman SouthAfrica bike check-in/check-out station. Hesays, “from then on, I was fascinatedwith thesport and the enduring spirit of the athletes.I knew then that it was an experience I hadto go throughmyself as away tohelpmebattlemy weight. Today I weigh between 75kg and78kg and feel much stronger mentally andphysically. Ironman has given me a secondchance at life.”Louis-Ras Joubert, 35, of Langebaan lead an
unhealthy lifestyle and, at 124kg, couldn’t
walk to the bus stop. He decided to put him-self through training to complete the Iron-man and completed the race in less than 11hours.The Standard Bank Ironman African

Situated in Wavecrest, Sensei Shaun Kapphas been in business for 10 years with over4 500 medals in combined tournaments of lo-cal, provincial, national and internationalarenas since being in charge of his Dojo.Kapp started karate in 1993 at the age of sev-
en, under instructor Sensei Ben De Swardt.“I stopped karate for six years as a juniorblack belt in 1998 due to death in the family.I started again in 2003 as a junior black belt,under the instruction of Sensei De Swardt,”he said.Kapp said he opened his own Dojo in Octo-
ber 2004, which is still going and growingstrong.As a 4th Dan Black belt, Kapp said his goal
in karate is to make it fun for the students,while in the process tthey train hard to be-come champions.Among his many achievements, Kapp won
the National JKA bronze medal in 2005 katau.21. In 2007 hewas theu.25 openmenKumiterunner-up in his respective age group. “Theyear 2008 was the highlight of my career as
I won the u.25 open men Kumite division andthe up-and-coming-star floating trophy of thelate great SenseiGordonRoyffe. I’ve alsobeenchosen quite a few times to represent mycountry, but never had the opportunity to godue to lack of finance.”Kapp says he is thankful for Sensei De
Swardt andSenseiTonyWilliamswhoguidedand supported him during his karate career.“I wish to further strengthen my club and toalways grow in the sport which we all love.”Kapp said his future goals for his club
