Outline
The KP-06, when connected to an automatic particle counter of RION Co., LTD. (hereafter
called the particle counter), controls the start and termination of the particle counter's
measurement, allowing up to 6 levels of particle count values to be printed by size ranges.
Major Functions- According to the size ranges of the particle counter to be connected, the equipment
prints the total value (number of all particles above a specified size) and the single
value (number of all particles of specified size range), or the total value only with
regards up to 6 grades of size ranges.
- Together with the number of particles, it prints the date/time of a measurement, the
model of a particle counter and the volume of a sample measured.
- Possible to select whether or not to print by size ranges.
- Possible to make a repeated measurement for up to 99 measurements and print the
average of the entire results.
2
Outline
- Possible to make up to 9 pre-measurements (see page 33) prior to a normal
measurement.
- Possible to conduct a periodic measurement (see pages 38 and 49 to 51), in which
after the initial measuring operation, a measurement starts at each point in time that
is specified within the range of 1 to 1440 minutes.
- If a pause in a cyclic measurement exceeds 5 minutes, it is possible to put the
equipment in the "light source pause" to prevent the particle counter's light source
from deteriorating (excluding some models of particle counters).
- By means of operations at the KP-06 side, it is possible to start a measuring operation
of the particle counter or stop it in the manual measurement (MAN) mode.
- Even when the power is off, the panel setting can be retained by the built-in backup
batteries.
3
Outline
Applicable Models of Particle Counters and Size RangesThe particle size range differs depending on the model of the particle counter. The
KP-06 is designed to fit the size range of any type of particle counter to be connected.
For example, if the particle counter employs 5 size ranges, the CH1, CH2, . . . CH5
buttons correspond to the size ranges in increasing order, leaving the CH6 button unused.
Depending on the model of a particle counter, there are some restrictions on the
functionality of the KP-06. For types of particle counters and the corresponding restrictions
on the KP-06's functionality, refer to "Restrictions due To Particle Counter". (See page 68.)

Ex.) If the date is set to April 31, then it will change to April 30 automatically.
29
Setting
Setting a Particle Size
The particle size range applicable to a measurement depends on the particle counter to connect.
The CH1 to CH6 buttons automatically suit the size range of the particle counter.
Using the CH1 to CH6 buttons, determine whether or not to print the measuring data of a
target channel.
Each time a button is pressed, the setting switches between to print (LED on) and not to
print (LED off) the measuring data of the respective channel.
However, if a button corresponds to any channel exceeding the maximum size range of the
particle counter, then, the LED of the button is extinguished at all times showing the same
channel is unavailable.
30
Setting
Setting the Single Value for Printing
Using the SINGLE button, select whether to print both the total and single values or the total
value only. Each time the button is pressed, the setting switches between to print (LED on)
and not to print (LED off) the single value.
However, if there is only one channel being selected among the CH1 to CH6 buttons, the
single value will not be printed regardless of the SINGLE button setting.
Nor will the single value be printed for the top channel of the target channels for printing.
(For specific examples of printing, see page 52.)
Total Value, Single ValueThe total value refers to the number of particles each of which is greater than the size
range of a target channel for printing.
The single value refers to the difference between the number of particles each of which
is no smaller than the size range of a target channel for printing (except the top channel);
and the number of particles each of which is no smaller than the size range of the
immediately-higher target channel for printing.
31
Setting
For example, assume here the size range of a target channel for printing is 0.5 µm and the
one of the immediately-higher channel for printing is 1 µm. Then, the total value for the
size range 0.5 µm is the number of particles each of which is 0.5 µm or larger, and the
single value is the number of particles each 0.5 µm or larger and smaller than 1 µm.
Setting the ALL DATA Button
When the printer is set to print an average, the ALL DATA button is to select whether to
print the average only (LED off) or both the average and per-measurement data (LED on).
Each time the button is pressed the setting is switched.
32
Setting
Setting the LAMP REST Button
Each time the LAMP REST button is pressed, the LAMP REST mode is set or cancelled.
The LAMP REST mode is intended to switch the particle counter to the lamp rest state if in
a periodic measurement setting, the interval (rest time) between the end of the last repeated
measurement and the start of the next exceeds 5 minutes.
The LAMP REST function is unavailable for some particle counters (KL-20, KL-20A,
KL-22, KL-26, KL-27 etc.). Also, the way the LAMP REST button is set may affect the
timing in starting a repeated measurement. (See page 45.)
The LED of the LAMP REST button flashes when the particle counter is in the lamp rest
state, lights when it is set to the LAMP REST mode but actually not in the lamp rest state,
and extinguishes when the LAMP REST mode is not set at all.
33
Setting
Setting the Number of Pre-measurements

If the set number of pre-measurements is changed during a measuring operation, the
measuring operation is suspended. (See page 42.)
Setting the Average Number of Times (Number of Measurements)
With the KP-06, to set the average number of times is to set the number of repeated
measurements. A measuring operation repeats until the given average number of times is
attained.
The average number of times (number of measurements) can be set to up to 99.
The average number of times is set using the AVG button. When the average number of
times is shown on the numeric display, the LED of the AVG button lights.
1. Press the AVG button to display the view to set the average number of times, on the

remains blank.)
- When a pre-measurement is underway:
The number of pre-measurements left is shown in the left 2-digit area, while the
set number of times is given in the right 2-digit area.
- When a normal measurement is underway:
The order of the ongoing measurement is shown in the left 2-digit area, while the
set number of times is given in the right 2-digit area.
37
Setting
2. The average number of times is shown in the right 2-digit area. In this condition,
press the or button to set the average number of times (number of measurements).
The setting range is 1 to 99 for the average number of times. The initial setting is 1.
The result of an average calculation (an average value) is printed if the average number of
times is set to 2 or more.
If the setting of the number of times is changed during a measuring operation, then the
measuring operation is suspended. (See page 42.)
38
Setting
Setting a Measuring Period
A measuring period refers to, in a periodic measurement (see pages 49 to 51), the time from
when the first repeated measurement starts until the next one starts.
A measuring period is set using the PERIOD button. Initially, the cancelled state ("-- --") is
selected. The LED of the PERIOD button lights when a measuring period is shown on the
numeric display.
1. Press the PERIOD button to obtain the view to set a measuring period, on the numeric
display.
- When a measuring period is set:
The measuring period set is shown in the unit of "minutes".
- When a measuring period is cancelled:

39
Setting
2. Press the or button to set a measuring period.
The setting range for a measuring period is 0 to 1440 (minutes).
If the button is pressed with 0 (minute) set, then the setting of a measuring period is
cancelled ("-- --" shown). If the setting of a measuring period is changed during a measuring
operation, then the measuring operation is suspended. (See page 42.)
40
Setting
Settings at the Side of the Particle Counter
The particle counter is to be controlled by means of operations at the KP-06 side.
The settings to be made at the side of the particle counter include: the SAMPLE VOLUME,
the particle size to be shown on the indicator of the particle counter, and the alarm.
For a manual measurement (see page 41), press the "MAN" button. For an automatic
measurement (see page 41), press a button corresponding to a measuring volume, except
"MAN".
For details, refer to the instruction manual of the relevant particle counter. Also, refer to the
chapter "Restrictions due to Particle Counter" (page 68).
Note
The particle counter is automatically set to the HOLD mode.
When the LAMP REST button is selected, the particle counter isautomatically set to the REMOTE mode. This has no bearing onwhether the particle counter connected supports the LAMP RESTfunction or not.
Do not change the SAMPLE VOLUME setting during a measure-ment.
41
Measurement
The measurement mode is divided into an automatic measurement and a manual measurement,
depending on the SAMPLE VOLUME setting of the particle counter.
Also, there are a single measurement, a repeated measurement and a periodic measurement
available according to the setting of the PRE, AVG and PERIOD buttons.
Manual MeasurementIf the SAMPLE VOLUME of the particle counter is set to "MAN", a measurement starts
or stops by means of a manual operation.
Automatic MeasurementIf the SAMPLE VOLUME of the particle counter is set to any other state than "MAN",
a measurement is conducted according to the given measuring volume.
A measurement starts using the START button of the KP-06, but it ends automatically.
42
Measurement
Starting/Stopping a Measurement- Starting a measurement
When the particle counter is connected and is ready for a measurement, a measuring
operation starts by pressing the START button of the KP-06. (Do not use the START
button of the particle counter.)
When the READY lamp is extinguished or the particle counter is in the lamp rest state,
no measurement starts even if the START button is pressed.
- Ending a measurement
Here, ending a measurement means the termination of each measuring operation.
In the case of the automatic measurement, a measurement stops automatically the moment
the measuring volume set by the SAMPLE VOLUME of the particle counter has been
attained. In the manual measurement, a measurement is terminated by pressing the STOP
button. (Do not use the STOP button of the particle counter.)
- Stopping a measurement
A measuring operation can be forcibly stopped by continuing to press the STOP button
2 seconds or more during the measuring operation. Also, a measuring operation stops
when the setting for the number of pre-measurements, the average number of times or
43
Measurement
the measuring period is changed during the operation. However, this function does not
work if the equipment is connected to a particle counter other than KC-01C, KC-01D,
KC-03A or any other model that has a compatible interface with these. The KP-06 stops
its measuring operation but the particle counter continues measuring.
A Single MeasurementPRE=0, AVG=1, PERIOD=Cancel
In this case, the data on a single
measurement specified will be
printed whether the ALL DATA
button is set to ON or OFF, and the
average will not be printed.
Repeated MeasurementIf the number of pre-measurements is set to 1 or more or the average number of times is
set to 2 or more, a repeated measurement will be conducted according to the relevant
settings.
As a typical settings actually made, the following cases (1) to (5) are described in the
following page and later.
44

(3) PRE=0, AVG=1, PERIOD=Set to 0
(4) PRE=m (1 to 9), AVG=n (2 to 99), PERIOD=Set to 0
(5) PRE=m (1 to 9), AVG=n (2 to 99), PERIOD=Set to t (1 to 1440)
Of these repeated measurements, the case (5) PERIOD=Set to t (1 to 1440) is specifically
called a "periodic measurement."
(1) PRE=0, AVG=n (2 to 99), PERIOD=Cancel
1. No pre-measurement is made.
A measurement starts right away and repeats until the number of times n specified
by the average number of times has been attained.
If the printer is set to print all the measuring data (ALL DATA=ON), each time a
measurement ends, the corresponding measuring data is printed.
2. When n times of measurements are completed, the average is calculated and then the
result is printed.
45
Measurement
The interval between measurements is within 5 seconds after the particle counter gets back
ready for the next measurement.
With some models (KL-20, 20A, 22, 26, 27), however, the following will result:
- When the LAMP REST button is selected:
Within 5 seconds after a measurement ends.*
- When the LAMP REST button is not selected:
Approx. 30 seconds after a measurement ends.*
*: Irrelevant to the original LAMP REST function.
If the START button is pressed during a measurement, the measuring data up until then will
be cleared, whether a measurement was actually started or not.
46
Measurement
(2) PRE=m (1 to 9), AVG=n (2 to 99), PERIOD=Cancel
1. First, a measurement repeats until the number of times m specified by the number of
pre-measurements has been attained.
However, this measuring data is not printed but cleared.
2. When m times of pre-measurements end, a measurement starts and repeats until the
number of times n specified by the average number of times has been attained.
If the printer is set to print all the measuring data (ALL DATA=ON), each time a
measurement ends, the corresponding measuring data is printed.
3. When n times of measurements end, the average is calculated and then the result is
printed.
47
Measurement
The interval between measurements is within 5 seconds after the particle counter gets back
ready for the next measurement.
However, this does not apply to some models (KL-20, 20A, 22, 26, 27). (See page 45.)
If the START button is pressed during a measurement, the measuring data up until then will
be cleared whether a measurement was actually started or not.
(3) PRE=0, AVG=1, PERIOD=Set to 0
No pre-measurement is made. When a measurement ends, the next measurement starts
without a pause. The average is not calculated, nor is the result printed. The measurement
repeats until it is ordered to stop. (See page 42.)
48
Measurement
The interval between measurements is within 5 seconds after the particle counter gets back
ready for the next measurement.
However, this does not apply to some models (KL-20, 20A, 22, 26, 27). (See page 45.)
(4) PRE=m (1 to 9), AVG=n (2 to 99), PERIOD=Set to 0
1. Same as 1. to 3. in (2).
2. The measuring operations described in 1. to 3. in (2) repeat in succession.
*: We refer here to these series of measurements as "1 set of measurement".
49
Measurement
If the START button is pressed during a measurement, then the measuring data up until then
will be cleared, whether a measurement was actually started or not.
(5) PRE=m (1 to 9), AVG=n (2 to 99), PERIOD=Set to t (1 to 1440)
When the measuring period t is set, the next repeated measurement (1 set of measurements)
starts the moment t minutes have passed after the initial repeated measurement (1 set of
measurements) started.
1. Same as 1. to 3. in (2).
2. Pauses after n times of measurements ended. After the set measuring period, t minutes,
have elapsed, the next repeated measurement (1 set of measurements) starts.
The same operation as that described in (4) will result if the set measuring period has
already elapsed the moment n times of measurements ended.
50
Measurement
If the time from the start of the nth measurement in the first repeated measurement (1 set of
measurements) till the start of the next repeated measurement (1 set of measurements) (i.e.,
a pause between measuring periods) exceeds 5 minutes, the particle counter is switched to
the lamp rest state and remains the same till 1 minute before the measurement starts -- as
long as the mode is set to LAMP REST.
51
Measurement
The interval between measurements is within 5 seconds after the particle counter gets back
ready for the next measurement.
However, this does not apply to some models (KL-20, 20A, 22, 26, 27). (See page 45.)
If the START button is pressed during a measurement, the measuring data up until then will
be cleared, whether a measurement was actually started or not.
52
Examples of Printing
Printing the Title of the KP-06The title is printed at start of the first measurement; and at start of the first measurement
after any of the settings was changed for the measurement mode of the particle counter,
the number of pre-measurements and the average number of times.
However, no title will be printed when none of CH1 to CH6 buttons is selected.
53
Examples of Printing
Printing the Measuring DataWhen the printer is set to print all the measuring data (ALL DATA=ON), the
corresponding data will be printed each time a measurement ends.
The items to be printed include: the time stamp which shows the start time of a
measurement, the measuring volume, the measuring data for a channel for which one of
CH1 to CH6 buttons is selected (total value only; or total and single values), and the
corresponding particle size.
When in the MAN mode, "MANUAL" may be printed as a measuring volume.
Total value only
54
Examples of Printing
The maximum digits to be printed for the measuring data vary according to the model of
a particle counter. Refer to a description of the serial interface (RS-232-C) in the instruction
manual attached to the relevant particle counter.
Ex.)
KC-01C, 01D, 03A, 18, 20, 21, 21A 6 digits
KL-20, 20A, 22, 26, 27 5 digits
Both total and single values
55
Examples of Printing
Measurement overflowed
For any measuring data which is determined as an
overflow by the particle counter or whose measured
value is more than 9,999,999, "*******" will be
printed as they are considered to have overflowed.
When impossible to calculate the single value
If the measuring data of a target channel for printing
is smaller than that of the immediately-higher channel
(greater particle size) or is overflowed, "???????" will
be printed in the display area of the single value.
56
Examples of Printing
Measurement with a measurement error
When a measurement error is detected (excluding the case in which the particle
counter stopped a measurement due to the occurrence of an error), the corresponding
measuring data will not be printed but an error message will be printed following the
time stamp.
57
Examples of Printing
AverageAn average can be printed only when the average number of times is set to 2 or more.
The average is determined by dividing the total of the effective measuring data by the
number of data. Decimals are omitted.
A measurement repeats until the average number of times is reached; then the average is
calculated and the result (average value) is printed.
The printing of the average is identical to that of a normal measuring data, except that a
header is added -- something like "Average : 5".
58
Examples of Printing
Any measuring data in which a measurement error was detected, will be excluded from
the subject data for an average calculation. Also, for any channel for which even a single
overflow was detected, the result of an average calculation will be treated as an overflow.
In this case, the number of measuring data in which a measurement error(s) was detected
will be printed in the header -- something like "Average : 4(NG=1)", and an error
description will be printed at the end of the data.
59
Examples of Printing
If a measurement error(s) was detected in all measuring
data, then only the header and the error description will be
printed.
If the measuring data whose measuring volumes are
different are contained, "???" will be printed in the display
area of the measuring volume.
Printing an ErrorError due to a measurement start-up failure
If the particle counter cannot accept a measurement
start-up request from the KP-06 side, then a message
to that effect will be printed.
60
Examples of Printing
Error due to an abnormal communication
After a connection has been established with the particle counter, if any abnormality
is detected as to communications with the particle counter, a message to that effect
will be printed.

Restrictions due to Particle Counter
There are some restrictions as follows depending on the model of a particle counter:
KC-18, KC-20, KC-21, KC-21AThese are always treated as measurable regardless of the state of particle counter
(state in which the READY lamp is constantly lighted). (See page 13.)
If during a measuring operation the setting is changed for either the number of pre-
measurements, the average number of times or the measuring cycle or the STOP
button is held pressed 2 seconds or more, then the KP-06 will stop a measuring
operation but the particle counter continues measuring without stopping. (See page 42.)
69
Restrictions due to Particle Counter
KL-20, KL-20A, KL-22, KL-26, KL-27These are subject to restrictions similar to those of KC-18 etc.
The LAMP REST function (lamp repose of particle counter) does not work. (See
pages 32 and 45.)
There are restrictions as shown below when using a syringe sampler (KZ-30W1 etc.).
- Switch the LAMP REST button to OFF.
- Set the discharge rate or the like so that the syringe will return to the home position
and get ready for the next measurement within 30 seconds after measurement
ends. If this setting is inappropriate, an error may occur causing the measurement
to stop.
- To operate the syringe sampler (KZ-30W1 etc.), use the "measurement mode".
If the "purge mode" or "combination mode" is used, malfunction may result.
- Set the SAMPLE VOLUME of the particle to "MAN". Set the measuring volume
at the side of the syringe sampler (KZ-30W1 etc.).
- Do not set the repeat function of the syringe sampler (KZ-30W1 etc.). Use the
repeated measurement function of the KP-06.
