OM-DIE-DAM ULTRA MARATHON
This year runners had to put up with the frustration and growing pains of the new venue. The better planners like
Estienne decided to camp at the venue which seemed to be the best decision in the circumstances. The second
best decision would have been to leave your house in Krugersdorp at 24h00 the night before the race to ensure
that you arrived on time.
Due to the single entrance (read road) that led to the venue and due to road blocks runners could not get to the
venue in time and the race started 30 minutes late for the ultra-marathon runners. It was not long before it started
raining and the rain lasted for the next three hours. This was fortunate in the circumstances as runners would
have been exposed to the sun for the last and tough part of the ultra-marathon race if it was indeed a sunny day.
Most runners agreed that the route was by no means easy and it ended with a sting in the tail. Weary runners
walked the last steep uphill and most of the half marathon runners walked this hill with the rain coming down in
buckets by then.
There is always something positive in every situation and at least the rain was welcome to our runners in
Gauteng who thought that people in Cape Town would have been delighted if they had been in our shoes. There
is something magic about the scent of the earth when it is wet and the fact that you are in touch with the
elements and nature when you feel the rain drops on your skin and you actually hear the rain coming down.
The prospect of finishing, showering (in cold water of course) and then putting on warm, dry clothes was the
motivating force to finish. What is better than a cup of warm coffee or hit chocolate afterwards, while you are safe
and dry under the club gazebo watching the other runners finish?
Thanks to Lezaane who helped out with the food when Mel was on the road and thanks to Estienne and helpers
who had put up the club gazebos. The gathering at the gazebo was one of the highlights of the day and it was
good to share experiences of the day with fellow club members.
Congratulations to Linda and Chanelle Dittrich who won category prizes:
Ruben Minnies received his permanent number. Well done!

LOSKOP
The surprise of the day was the first finisher of our club. It shows you what hard training can do….
Congratulations to Clifford, Chris and Waldo who got their permanent numbers.
THE CRADLE RACE
Our Cradle race was again very popular and most runners gave positive feedback. Thank you to all club
members who assisted in various ways to ensure that the day was a success. Without everybody’s effort the race
could not have been held.
There were some tense moments. One was when the Coke only arrived late at night on the 26th
of April…

GOOD LUCK TO ALL COMRADES RUNNERS IN YOUR FINAL PREPARATION FOR THE BIG “C”
Enjoy the well earned tapering this month
Words of advice that I remember from my mentor Don Oliver. Unless you have an injury or you are ill on Comrades day, there are only two changes left for you to bugger up your Comrades day. One depends on what you do on the day and the other is if you now do not taper wisely. Now is not the time to increase your mileage and to try to get in more kilometers. Your body needs the tapering to perform at its best on Comrades day. If you have an injury – rest. If you doubt whether you should go for a run, rather rest. Any doubt, rest, rest, rest. You will still be able to finish Comrades as planned as the homework had already been done. Concentrate on your mental preparation. Visualize the route, the finish and the medal in your hand!
Avoid people who have flu or who are ill and stay healthy. Boost your immune system.
INTERCLUB:
Krugersdorp hosted the interclub that was held on 3 May 2018. Despite the sudden rain and cold late in the
afternoon, runners from Golden Reef, Khosa and Roodepoort still came and join us.
Thanks to Mel, Liesl, Jenine, Mike, Johan and our junior chefs who ensured that there were warm and cold drinks
and tasty hamburgers afterwards.
