13Passato l’anno della maledizione dei Maya, si apre una nuova era. 13, sarà il nome del nostro lavoro per il duemilatredici, dove la voglia di crescere, fare progetti interessanti, portare avanti la nostra personale idea di design, DESIGN WITHIN REACH, IN STOCK AND READY TO SHIP, ci ha portato a scommettere anche su nuovi linguaggi, stimolanti contaminazioni con l’arte contemporanea. Da questo spirito nasce la nuova collaborazione con l’artista Ivana Volpe e il rinnovato sodalizio con Sander Mulder, Stolt Design e gli altri designers con i quali collaboriamo da tempo.Guardiamo al futuro imminente con ottimismo e passione, convinti che costruire un’idea di design, comodo, bello e accessibile, ci faccia procedere nella giusta direzione.Con un pizzico di fortuna.

The year of the adverse Mayan prophecy being past and gone, a new era opens before us. 13 is going to be the name of our work for twenty thirteen, where the desire to grow, make interesting plans and implement our personal idea of design, DESIGN WITHIN REACH, IN STOCK AND READY TO SHIP, has led us to place a bet also on new languages, stimulating contaminations with contemporary art. Thirteen, the movieKubikoff ha iniziato un’affascinante percorso di collaborazione con artisti che operano nel mondo della video art.13 è un videoart, che racconta in modo onirico la genesi di un’idea, il segno quasi tangibile che unisce il pensiero e la realizzazione. Una linea colorata, giallo acceso, unisce le persone e gli oggetti creando una fusione di linee, corpi e volti.13 con la regia di Clizia Corti e la fotografi a di Giampiero a Muzzi è il secondo videoart prodotto da Kubikoff che prosegue nella ricerca e l’esplorazione di nuovi linguaggi.

In occasione di IMM Cologne 2013 verrà inserita nello spazio Kubikoff la poetica video installazione di Ivana Volpe, 65%.

Kubikoff began a fascinating collaboration journey with artists working in the world of video art.13 is a video art, which tells, in the form of a dream, the genesis of an idea, the nearly tangible sign which links thought and realization. A coloured line, bright yellow, joints people and objects creating a fusion of lines, bodies and faces.13, directed by Clizia Corti, photograph by Giampiero Muzzi, is the second video art produced by Kubikoff that continues in the research and exploration of new languages.

At IMM Cologne 2013, the poetic video installation by Ivana Volpe, 65%, will be exhibited in the Kubikoff space.

Sign Sound Chair è il nome dell’ambizioso ed innovativo progetto, presentato alla IMM di Colonia, nato dalla feconda collaborazione tra Kubikoff e la giovane ma promettente artista Ivana Volpe (classe 1988). Una linea di sedie in edizione limitata nelle quali lo standard di qualità Kubikoff si impreziosisce di decori grafi ci unici. Perfettamente il linea con la fi losofi a della casa olandese, che situa il prodotto fi nale nella zona intermedia di contaminazione tra tutte le arti, l’intervento artistico di Ivana Volpe costituisce una sfi da alla sensibilità percettiva di ognuno di noi. La piacevolezza visiva delle linee fuse nella materia delle comode sedute deriva, infatti, direttamente da uno dei principali lavori della giovane artista, costituendone una fi liazione perfetta nel suo meccanismo.Sign Sound Chair is the name of the ambitious and innovative project, presented in January at the imm in Cologne, which sprouted from the fruitful collaboration between Kubikoff and the young but promising artist Ivana Volpe (born 1988). A line of limited-edition chairs, where unique graphic decorations lend a precious touch to the Kubikoff quality standard.Perfectly aligned with the philosophy of the Dutch fi rm, which places the fi nal product in the intermediate area of cross-contamination of all arts, Ivana Volpe’s artistic efforts challenge the perceptual sensitivity of each one of us. Indeed, the visual pleasantness of the lines fused with the material of the comfortable seats directly springs from one of the young artist’s main works, creating a fi liation that is perfect in its mechanism. But let us proceed by degrees.

Nato durante un soggiorno di studio presso l’Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts di Bruxelles, capitale di provincia e ombelico d’Europa allo stesso tempo, 65% è un’installazione in situ realizzata nel giugno 2011 in occasione della collettiva Bizar, nei locali del futuro centro della moda e del design di Bruxelles. Chiamata dal comitato organizzativo a fare un sopralluogo negli ambienti dell’edificio, la giovane Ivana resta affascinata dalla claustrofobica ma rasserenante sensazione suscitata in lei dalla minuscola stanza da bagno dell’ultimo piano. Nella piccola vasca, alloggiata tra la carta da parati ormai in disfacimento, visualizza mentalmente il corpo di una ragazza, un corpo analogo al suo, vivere intrappolato nella porzione subacquea. Quest’immagine è dotata di una tale forza e precisione che l’artista non ha dubbi sulla sua realizzazione. Legata al rapporto personale e ambivalente con l’elemento acqua, oltre che metafora di una condizione precaria tendente verso un tragico che viene, tuttavia, sempre posticipato per lasciare spazio ad una inaspettata serenità della condizione presente, l’installazione prende forma e materia. Proiezione su uno schermo liquido: i fotogrammi del video restano intrappolati sulla superficie dell’acqua che riempie la vasca, in modo da donare all’immagine del corpo della ragazza una realtà illusoria sbalorditiva. Il suono in presa diretta e l’ondeggiare dell’acqua sono costitutivamente immateriali, combinazioni di zero e di uno all’interno del file, ma raggiungono un’impressione di immanenza inaspettata. La tentazione è quella di toccare la superficie, guardare la bocca del rubinetto per avere una risposta empirica sulla base della quale prendere posizione. O forse solo tendere la mano e liberare questa giovane. Poi scegliamo, invece, di restare in balia del cortocircuito sensoriale, in una piccola stanza di questa grande città. Lavoro di alta e indiscussa qualità, 65% colpisce la duplice mente di Kubikoff e porta Matthieu e Gino Lemson alla decisione di commissionare una linea all’artista. Come fare a tradurre una videoinstallazione in situ in intervento decorativo per una linea di sedie, senza che questo diventi una banale riproduzione, una sbiadita ripresa iconografica dei sui elementi costitutivi? Ivana si concentra sulla componente centrale di 65%: l’acqua, origine del suono e destinazione della proiezione, materia sulla quale l’immagine può formarsi. Ad ogni movimento della ragazza del video corrisponde un rumore generato

dallo spostamento della massa liquida. L’alternarsi di suoni e silenzi costituisce l’invisibile impalcatura della videoinstallazione, il legame indissolubile e imprescindibile tra i vari elementi. L’attenzione si sposta dunque dal senso della vista a quello dell’udito, ma queste informazioni necessitano una rielaborazione, in modo da poter essere ricondotte, ancora una volta, sotto il dominio degli occhi. Come fare per tradurre il codice binario che compone il tracciato audio in termini visivi? L’entrata in scena di Giorgio Carlà, ingegnere informatico classe 1980, si rivela fondamentale: favorita da una facilità di comunicazione tra i due amici (oggi collaboratori) nasce l’idea della FoxApp, ausilio fondamentale in cui scienza ed arte si incontrano. Il giovane sciamano dell’era digitale, sviluppa un’applicazione capace di “trasformare” il suono in immagini: a partire dai byte che compongono il file stesso e impostando alcuni parametri (tra i quali tratto, colore o bit rate), la FoxApp produce veri e propri grafici (che si possono salvare in formato bitmap), forma segnica dell’essenza sonora di un processo artistico. Il cerchio si è chiuso: passando attraverso il suono l’immagine si è riconvertita, i sensi sono stati tutti coinvolti e sorpresi al contempo e Ivana ha un nuovo materiale visivo sul quale lavorare, un “espressionismo astratto digitale, espressione non più di un gesto bensì di un suono”, come l’artista stessa ci spiega. Le grafiche sulle sedie derivano, infatti, da quei grafici primordiali, legando i due lavori dell’artista a doppio filo, secondo un rapporto di causa/effetto generativo unico. Ed è per questo che i frutti della collaborazione tra Kubikoff e Ivana Volpe (con l’aiuto prezioso di Giorgio Carlà) sono davvero degli oggetti artistici all’avanguardia, suscettibili di un uso quotidiano. Sedute che non sono solo pezzi di design e opere d’arte, ma offrono la possibilità effettiva di adagiarsi sul suono, o almeno sulla trascrizione visiva di quest’ultimo. Possedere queste sedie equivale, in un certo senso, a possedere una porzione di 65%.Durante i giorni della fiera di Colonia è possibile esperire in prima persona il legame tra 65% e Sign Sound Chair, grazie alla prossimità spaziale della loro esposizione all’interno dello stand Kubikoff

Conceived during a study internship at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, at once the capital with a small-town mentality and the Mother-city of Europe, 65% is an installation in situ set up in June 2011 on occasion of the Bizar collective exhibition, on the premises of the future fashion and design centre of Brussels. Called by the organisation committee to inspect the rooms of the building, young Ivana was struck by the claustrophobic but heartening sensation that the tiny bathroom on the last floor stirred in her. In the small bathtub, set against badly damaged wallpaper, she envisioned the body of a girl, a body similar to hers, living trapped underwater. The image was endowed with such power and precision that the artist had no doubts about its realisation. Tied to her personal and ambivalent relationship with the water element, the installation - besides being the metaphor of a precarious condition verging on tragedy, and yet deferred to leave room to an unexpected serenity of

the present moment - takes shape and substance. Projection on a liquid screen: the video frames stay trapped on the surface of the water that fills the tub, lending an astounding illusory reality to the girl’s body. The live sound and the rippling water are, by their own nature, immaterial, combinations of zero and one within the file, but achieve an impression of unexpected immanence. We are tempted to touch the surface, look at the mouth of the water tap to get an empirical answer in order to take a stand. Or perhaps, simply reach out to free the young woman. But in the end, we choose to remain at the mercy of the sensorial short-circuit, in a small room of this big city.A work of excellent and uncontested quality, 65% struck Kubikoff’s dual mind and led Matthieu and Gino Lemson to commission the artist for a line. How can one translate a video installation in situ into a decorative work for a line of chairs, without turning it into a trite reproduction, a dull iconographic replica of its constituent elements? Ivana focused on water, the main component of 65%, origin of the sound and destination of the projection, the matter on which the image can take shape. Each movement of the girl in the video corresponds to a sound generated by the movement of the liquid. Sound alternates with silence, and together they form the invisible framework of the video installation, the indissoluble and inescapable bond between the different elements. The attention shifts from the sense of sight to hearing, but this information needs to be re-processed in order to be brought back, once again, to sight. How can one translate in visual terms the binary code that makes up the audio track? The entrance on the scene of a computer engineer, Giorgio Carlà (born 1980), proved to be of immense importance: the two friends (who have now become collaborators), owing to the ease of communication between them, conceived the idea of FoxApp, a fundamental application where science and art meet. The young shaman of the digital era thus developed an application capable of “transforming” sound into images: starting from the bytes of the file, and setting some parameters (including stroke, colour or bitrate), FoxApp produces real graphs (that can be saved in bitmap format), the signifier of the sonorous essence of an artistic process. The circle has closed: passing through sound, the image was re-converted, all senses were involved and surprised at once, and Ivana acquired a new visual material to work on, a “digital, abstract expressionism, the expression of a sound, rather than a gesture”, as explained by the artist herself. The graphic works on the chairs indeed derive from those primordial graphics, intertwining the two works by the artist in

a unique generative cause/effect relationship. For this reason, the fruits of the collaboration between Kubikoff and Ivana Volpe (with Giorgio Carlà’s precious input) are truly cutting-edge works of art, suitable for daily use.Seats that are not only pieces of design and works of art, but that offer the actual opportunity to rest on sound, or at least on the visual transcription of sound. Owning these chairs somehow means owning a portion of 65%. The Cologne exhibition will be the perfect occasion to appreciate first-hand the bond between 65% and Sign Sound Chair, they being displayed in close proximity at the Kubikoff stand.

IVANA VOLPE Ivana nasce l'11 ottobre 1988 a Campobasso, dove vive al momento.La sua formazione presso l'Accademia di belle Arti di Fi-renze è arricchita da un soggiorno di studio presso l'Aca-démie Royale de Beaux-Arts di Bruxelles. Elementi legati alle ambizioni e aspirazioni di quando era bambina caratterizzano le prime opere, nelle quali ricorre il gesto del tagliare per poi ricucire, dell'incidere sul corpo, del ferire e del curare. Questi temi vengono poi sviluppati e approfonditi come indagine dell'instabilità e dell'equi-librio messo a repentaglio. Attualmente un'attenzione al suono, al rumore e alle sue dinamiche è al centro dei suoi interessi.Ha partecipato a varie esposizioni collettive (tra cui: la sud-detta “Bizar”, a Bruxelles; “Souk” a cura di Pierluigi Tazzi presso EX3, centro per l'arte contemporanea a Firenze; “In vena d'arte” al Castello Pandone di Venafro; “Ambi-Valenze”, alla Libreria la scolastica di Campobasso), all'in-tervento di street art “draw the line” nella sua città natale e performance “cosa lavo a fare i miei capelli, cosa li sciolgo a fare?”.Nel suo percorso professionale, oltre ad attività che la ve-dono impegnata come artista tout-court, vanta anche espe-rienze come grafica, allestitrice, decoratrice e restauratrice.

Ivana was born on 11 October 1988 in Campobasso, where she lives now. Her education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence is enhanced by a period of study at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.Elements linked to the ambitions and aspirations of her childhood characterize her early works, in which the gestu-re of the cut and then sew occurs, as well as body-cutting, hurting and then healing. These themes are then develo-ped and deepened as an investigation on jeopardized in-stability and balance. Currently her attention is focused on sound, noise and its dynamics.She has participated in various group exhibitions, inclu-ding “Bizar” in Brussels, “Souk” organized by Pierluigi Tazzi at EX3 – centre for contemporary art in Florence, “In vena d’arte “ at the Pandone Castle in Venafro, and “Ambi-Valenze “ at the Library La Scolastica in Campobasso. She also participated to a street art event (“Draw the line”) in his hometown and also to the performance “what do I wash my hair for, what do I let it free for?”.In her career, beyond being an artist tout-court, she also has developed experience as a graphic designer, fitter, de-corator and restorer.
